Some musicians start with formal lessons and daily practice and some get hooked by picking up a washboard between hopping train cars across the country. Alynda Segarra is the latter type, and it led them to a new life dedicated to music and community in their adopted home of New Orleans. As the band Hurray for the Riff Raff, Segarra has been making music beloved by critics and fans since 2008 and is still going strong. Their most recent album, “The Past is Still Alive,” came out last year. They sat down with poetry professor and host of the PBS series “Poetry in America,” Elisa New, at the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival to talk about writing lyrics, making music and finding their place in America. We're bringing you the conversation for National Poetry Month. aspenideas.org
On this week's show, we spend quality time with the records that sparked joy, inspired us to get out of bed, face the day & conquer the world while the world continued to rage on like an unholy dumpster fire. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
From an early age, Alynda Segarra saw the people they loved grind it out in an American system that offered them little reward. Their father, a musician and Vietnam War veteran, suffered from PTSD, and their aunt and uncle, with whom they lived, were stretched beyond their means. Alynda decided they would take a different path: drop out of school, hop trains, and form a band. "I just thought I should take a bunch of risks in [my family's] honor," Alynda told Anna. In 2024, Hurray for the Riff Raff released their ninth album, The Past Is Still Alive, and it explores that early period of risk-taking and leaving home. In this episode, Alynda talks to Anna about how writing the album, plus the recent death of their father, made them reconsider family dynamics, joy, and what it means to be free. The Past Is Still Alive, is the next phase in Hurray for the Riff Raff's progression as a raconteur. Born in the Bronx and of Puerto Rican descent, Alynda Segarra molds their lyrics into snapshots that hold memories, process their trauma, and makes sense of loss. The country-tinged “Alibi” comes in the form of a plea, one last effort to get through to someone you know you're going to lose.
Alynda Segarra returns to SHEROES to discuss their critically-hailed new Hurray For The Riff Raff album The Past Is Still Alive, their journey that is documented in these memoir-style songs, and how the songs and recording of the album took on a whole new meaning following the sudden passing of their father.

Alynda Segarra is the driving force behind the band Hurray For The Riff Raff. After a little more than a year of production, HFTRR released their newest album ‘The Past Is Still Alive' in February 2024. The album serves as a kind of memory box for Segarra, paying homage to both loved ones they have lost and those who continue to support them. Segarra sat down with Vocalo audio and community storytelling producer Ari Mejia and host Nudia Hernandez ahead of their Chicago tour stop to discuss the album and more. Hurray For The Riff Raff is currently on an international tour through May 26, with support from Chicago artists NNAMDÏ and Sen Morimoto. Find information and tickets on hurrayfortheriffraff.com. This interview was produced by Nudia Hernandez, conducted by Ari Mejia and Nudia Hernandez, and edited by Ari Mejia. It originally aired live on 91.1 FM during Nudia In the Afternoons on Thursday, March 14. Keep up with Hurray For The Riff Raff on Instagram @hurrayfortheriffraff.
Alynda Segarra makes music as Hurray For The Riff Raff and they are my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. I've been really loving Alynda's new record The Past is Still Alive so we talked about that as well as the surprising nature of grief, ABC NO RIO, songs as monuments, taking lessons from nature, and Blood on the Tracks weather. This was such a great talk with a fantastic artist. Listen and subscribe!

Today Norah is joined by masterful singer-songwriter, Alynda Segarra aka Hurray For The Riff Raff. Though a Bronx native, Alynda found a grounding music community in New Orleans, and through songwriting and performing, they evolved into the passionate and powerful musician they are today. The stillness of the pandemic inspired them to write. You'll hear some of those songs in this episode, and Norah and Alynda come together on a heartfelt Lucinda Williams duet. Recorded 6/12/23. How do we sustain nourishing roots in a time of displacement? This week, guest Alynda Mariposa Segarra invites listeners to examine their relationship to place, comfort, and survival as they discuss their newest album LIFE ON EARTH. Through the art form of music, Alynda holds together the complexities that come with wanting and needing to run away from oppressive systems while simultaneously having to confront what is happening right in front of us. Tapping into these themes, Alynda discusses their work with Freedom for Immigrants, emphasizing the urgency of action and compassion as we work to end systems of detainment and punishment.Winding through the intricacies of making art under capitalism, finding humility in our purposes, and fostering the safe havens of mutual aid, Alynda reminds us of the capacious ability we have to continually queer our culture. Drawing anger and vulnerability together through love, Alynda leaves us with the resounding call to live deeply in this world and to love it hard. Alynda Mariposa Segarra is a songwriter/storyteller who performs under the name Hurray for the Riff Raff. They are a Nuyorican queer artist born and raised in the Bronx, who got much of their musical/political education from the anarcho squatter punk scene of NYC. Alynda spent years as a freight train rider and eventually learned to make music on the street in New Orleans. Alynda has used the craft of songwriting as a tool for communication and protest. They have released 8 albums of music, most recently the critically acclaimed LIFE ON EARTH in February 2022.Join us on Patreon at patreon.com/forthewild for an extended version of this episode.Music by Hurray for the Riff Raff. On this week's show, we spend quality time exploring the queer country community, checking out the new Jayhawks record & spinning some tracks we haven't listened to in a minute. All this & much, much less!
On today’s episode I give you my take on this pandemic, how it’s shaped life for New Yorkers, & what's happening in Puerto Rico, as they continue to face challenges other places do not: From closure of airports, to buying life saving supplies. An important note, if you feel you have the virus, unsure what to do Apple has partnered with the CDC on a screening tool. Note: they use your data, without personal info. This week I kept thinking that we rely on our leaders for solace in challenging times and right now there is a lack of leadership and collaboration. As the epicenter, New York predict they'll run out of medical supplies in a week, and need 140k beds. Meanwhile over half of cases in NY are 18-49 yrs old. In Italy, they reported the highest jump in deaths in 24 hrs, with over 900 people dead. Note: Italy had 3.2 beds per 1 thousand people while the US has 2.8 per 1000. Hospitals are running out of beds/protective equipment. As cases rise, I discuss how Wall Street shouldn't determine the response to a health crisis. We can't put a cost to human life - even if that has been the status quo in America. Ultimately though, the response to the virus will be guided by how we deal with class in America.Music credit: Alynda Segarra a Puerto Rican singer & lead of Hurray for the Riff RaffTexas Lt Gov who prefers to die to save economy/GrandchildrenNYC deaths: More than 1 person per 24 hoursNYTimes Op edPR Recovery plan & Puerto Rico FB on COVID19PR epidemiologist not equipped to handle crisis (note: She has since been removed from this position) & PR "first" death in the newsPuerto Rico Needs Medical Supplies but faces RestrictionsFears of being ignored during pandemicPocillo Podcast: a Puerto Rican podcastMost vulnerable workers in PRAn estimate of deaths from Coronavirus in Puerto RicoThe Daily: NYTimes PodcastThe Ezra Klein ShowRemezclaBoricua Short DocThe Seeds we SowLessons from ItalyFor more go to Borikenpodcast.com
