Architectural Historian Roberto Prieto-Labrador joins Natalie Grueninger to explore the domestic world of the Tudor middling sort — tradespeople, merchants, and prosperous farmers. They trace architectural changes from medieval open-hall houses to floored, chimneyed homes during the Great Rebuilding, discuss materials, reuse and regional differences, and reveal household practices and apotropaic marks used to ward off harm. The episode also examines how wills and inventories inform building history, compares English and Spanish domestic layouts, and highlights the Weald and Downland Living Museum as a resource for experiencing historic buildings. After both appearing on the Grazing for Good: Livestock and Biodiversity in the UK panel at ORFC earlier this year, SFT CEO, Patrick Holden, sat down once again with Molly Biddell, Head of Natural Capital at Knepp Estate – a 3,500-acre rewilding project in West Sussex – for an episode of the SFT Podcast. Her work involves leveraging nature markets and policy for Knepp, Weald to Waves and the River Adur Landscape Recovery project. She also works part-time at Hampton Estate, a family-run regenerative farming business, facilitates the Upper Adur Farming Cluster group and is a columnist for Farmers Weekly. In this episode, Patrick and Molly talk about the work going on at Knepp Estate – ‘a radical rewilding experiment', says Molly – including the success they've had so far in terms of an increase in biodiversity, carbon sequestration and habitat restoration. They also talk about the role of projects like Knepp Estate to improve public awareness of rewilding and more sustainable agricultural methods, before finishing the episode with a discussion on measuring the climate, nature and social impacts of such projects. To hear more from Molly, you can read her column for Farmers Weekly here. To find out more about Knepp Estate, visit: https://knepp.co.uk. Steve's 3 mindset messages: Control the controllables Break it Down, to Build it UP Be the Last One Standing Food Steve enjoys all food, so he was very happy to go with my recommendation. However, he gave me some ideas: fish, lamb, vegetarian dishes & tapas. Something light & healthy. I was watching Masterchef Professionals one day, when they made tartare beurre blanc sauce, and straight away I thought I want to make this sauce for Steve to go alongside nice Cornish sole with potatoes. Not all the dishes require practise, but the sauce kept me practising twice before filming. I wanted to make sure I get the right flavour. The sauce is so delicious, that I added it to my repertoire of sauces to be made to my friends when they come over for dinner. Steve truly enjoyed his dish and I made sure there is plenty of it! ;-) Please visit www.mindsetkitchen.co.uk

Published in 1926, the poem was a great success, winning the Hawthornden Prize for Literature and going through six print runs in three years.

Return to the Weald, the world Stephanie Ellis introduced us to in The Five Turns of the Wheel.Reborn is the story of Cernunnos, the Father of all, who has risen. Born of blood offerings, he travels to the Layerings—one of those places, like Umbra, which sit just beyond the human veil.Reborn is the story of Tommy, Betty and Fiddler, the infamous troupe whose bloody rituals were halted by Megan, Tommy's Daughter. Rendered weak by Megan's refusal to allow them to hunt in the human world of the Weald, they seek their rebirth and forgiveness from the Mother and Cernunnos.Reborn is the story of Megan, who follows Cernunnos and Hweol's sons on a pilgrimage of hope—one that would see her husband restored to her and the dark presence of Hweol removed.Ultimately, though, Reborn is the story of Betty, the most monstrous of the three brothers. He is Nature, red in tooth and claw. He is what the Mother made him. And who are we to judge? With Reborn, Ellis delivers another powerful tale of folk horror that will captivate the reader from the first page until its final bloody climax.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Kent is a county in southeast England and one of the leading areas for wine production in the UK. A range of still wines are made, predominantly whites from cool-climate German-developed crossings such as Ortega and Bacchus. However, as is the case for other parts of southern England, the county's traditional method sparkling wines made from the Champagne grape varieties can often reach very high levels of quality.Simpson's Wine Estate is owned and run by husband and wife team Charles and Ruth Simpson. The Simpsons already own and run vineyards in France, they are now producing some top quality wines on the North Downs in Kent and have won numerous awards including a Platinum at the Decanter World Wine Awards for their Roman Road Chardonnay.Simpsons' Wine Estate is located in one of the sunniest corners of the British Isles, and they have further safeguarded their vines against extremes in climate by selecting sloping vineyards that face almost due south, ensuring heat accumulation in the day, and excellent cold air drainage at night. The maritime influence is also crucial to the success of their vines: they are less than eight miles from the coast on three sides, which helps insulate the fruit against intense variations in temperature. In December 2015, Champagne Taittinger announced it was buying a vineyard in Kent and would produce an English sparkling wineThere are around 50 vineyards. Kent is known colloquially as the Garden of England. Cereal crops and fruit orchards are much more common than vineyards, at least for the moment. The same geological layer on which Champagne is situated surfaces in the North Downs in the north of the county. Other vineyards are situated on slopes of the Greensand Ridge plus other areas of the soil type of the same name. The greensand forms a thin strip around the Weald, a diamond-shaped area between the chalk ridges of the North and South Downs. Around two dozen Kent vineyards are situated within this area. Broadly speaking, the northeastern quarter of the Weald corresponds to the southern half of Kent. Soils here can feature varying degrees of sand, shale and clay. The Weald has been promoted as a candidate for its own Protected Geographic Indication.Largely due to climate change, considerable interest has been shown by Champagne winemakers in the long-term potential of Kent. In 2017 Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger planted the first vines for his Champagne house's new venture Domaine Evremond. However wines are not due until the late 2020's.Remember to hit the follow the podcast and as always if you have found listening to this podcast valuable, leave a review! https://simpsonswine.com/ We would love you hear from you! Episode 17 takes me and my brilliant team-mate, Ivan de Klee, outside of the Knepp Estate boundaries. Ivan is our rainbow chaser and helps us imagine what a wilder landscape might look like as we explore the idea of the Weald to Waves corridor. We talk about how such collaborative landscape scale projects, and new rewilding projects, could be funded by new agri-environment schemes, biodiversity net gain and carbon sequestration – and how these markets might work. Ivan explains what natural capital is and how rewarding landowners for ecosystem services, such a biodiversity and soil restoration, could pave the future for nature conservation in the UK.
In May 2021 I walked 8 miles into the Sussex Weald to see if I could hear a cuckoo. The weather was fine and there were loads of birds out, many of them in full song. This is an episode best listened to through headphones so you can hear the birdsong, the wind through the trees and the buzzing of bees in the woodland landscape of the High Weald. It's an immersive episode with a guided walk feel, focusing on listening to the surrounding landscape. Follow a brave new team of unfortunate adventurers as they tackle the maddening sickness that spreads from a small hamlet town in this grim dark, gothic campaign. Deep in the heart of the Weald stands a gigantic tree that towers above all other trees, and hidden within the gnarled and twisted branches of this tree is the Shrieker's Nest. Like the Noble Raven depicted on our family's Coat of Arms, this poor creature has seen better days, for the corruption that plagues the estate has twisted this feathered bird into a feathered fiend. There are calls for an investigation into a Kent grammar school amid claims it's acting illegally. The Weald of Kent in Tonbridge opened an annexe in Sevenoaks in 2017, but now campaigners say it's acting as a stand-alone grammar, despite laws preventing new selective schools from being built.
