The film follows a group of teenagers who discover they are able to contact spirits using a mysterious severed and embalmed hand, only for things to go too far. Talk to Me premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival on 30 October 2022, and was released by Maslow Entertainment, Umbrella Entertainment, ad Ahi Films in Australia on 27 July 2023. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised its story, direction, horror sequences, practical effects, sound design and performances, with Wilde and Bird receiving particular praise. It was a box office success, grossing approximately $91.9 million[2][3] worldwide against a $4.5 million budget,[4][5] becoming American distributor A24's highest-grossing horror film and second highest-grossing film overall.[6] A sequel is currently in development. At a house party in Adelaide, Cole searches for his brother Duckett. When he finds Duckett and attempts to bring him home, Duckett stabs Cole and kills himself. Some time later, 17-year-old Mia is struggling with the second anniversary of her mother Rhea's suicide by overdose and her distant relationship with her father Max. Mia, her best friend Jade, and Jade's little brother Riley sneak out to a gathering hosted by Hayley and Joss, where the main attraction is a severed and embalmed hand. Holding the hand and saying "talk to me" enables someone to communicate with a deceased person's spirit, while saying "I let you in" allows the spirit to possess them. In order to prevent spirits from binding themselves to that person, someone else must end the possession before 90 seconds by pulling away the embalmed hand and blowing out a candle to cut the connection. Mia volunteers to go first and is possessed by a spirit that displays a menacing focus on Riley. Joss and Hayley struggle to break the connection and the time limit is slightly exceeded. Mary joins Caitlin to cover Talk To Me, the newest horror release from A24. We dicuss themes of grief, friendship, monstrous motherhood, and drugs. Talk To Me is genuinely scary, boasts great practical effects, and has an excellent script with realistic, authentic characters. It's a banger of a debut from the brothers Philippou. Tangents include: faces, Twilight, signature dishes, DMT, toys, bugs, movie trailers, blankets, ninjas, vikings, and soup. Sports movies are tricky. So are video game adaptations. Thankfully for Gran Turismo, rather than attempt to spin a narrative out of gameplay, the plot capitalizes on the unique opportunity to showcase its game (that's actually an extremely advanced driving simulator) through Jann Mardenborough's extraordinary real-life journey from gamer-to- professional race car driver. In Neill Blomkamp's (District 9) hands Gran Turismo is slick, well-paced, and visually engaging. The storytelling weaves the game creation by Kazunori Yamauchi (Takehiro Hira) backstory in but really revolves around British teenager Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe). It's a highly relatable story of a young man who dreams of a career that seems beyond his means to achieve. He gets a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to prove his worth and make his dreams a reality. His adventure starts with winning a competition designed to identify the best Gran Turismo drivers in the world. The prize: access to a specialty racing academy run by Nissan and a chance to earn a spot on their professional racing team. Gran Turismo's solid ensemble performances, dynamic race sequences (based on real races Mardenborough participated in) and the light Hollywood gloss on the chronology keep you invested right through until the end. It's imminently watchable as racing movie. This is a move based on a marketing ploy turned Cinderella story so expect to see the products in question on screen. However, you'll be pleasantly surprised that Blomkamp stayed the narrative course all the way through. Listen as Ro and Kriss discuss Gran Turismo now. ** Writers: Jason Hall, Zach Baylin Runtime: 2h 15m Starring: Sophie Wilde, Joe Bird, Alexandra Jensen, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto Synopsis: Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver. Hey, who doesn't love a party? And what's better at a party than a good party game, especially one that involves grasping the hand at the end of an embalmed arm, and intoning the words, “Talk to me.” For the full effect, you say the words, “I let you in,” allowing yourself to be fully possessed by whatever lies beyond the spirit realm. It's terrifying, sure, but it's also a total rush, provided you keep it under 90 seconds. For Mia, it's a welcome distraction from a rough year. She recently lost her mum for reasons unexplained, and her bestie Jade's little brother Riley keeps tagging along with them to parties. Jade and Riley's mum is concerned the kids might be into something nasty, like pot, or booze. Little does she know, the kids are into something much worse, much more addictive, and when one of their games goes too far, all hell breaks loose, unleashing spirits best left undisturbed. A group of teenage friends summon spirits using a disembodied forearm and hand encased in plaster, and things go as you might expect. Matt & Ashley review the new horror movie, Talk To Me, in this episode.
The best thing a horror movie can do is make you think about it long after the end credits roll. A24 Studios specializes at releasing these kind of horror movies. Is Talk To Me one of those? Check out this spoiler-free review to find out. Directors Danny and Michael Phillipou present their very first feature-length movie and it was good enough to get into Sundance and get bought by A24. It tells the story of Mia whose mother died relatively recently. To find some comfort for the grief, she agrees to take part in a ritual where you're possessed by the dead. The ritual centers around a ceramic hand that contains an embalmed hand. You light a candle to open the doorway then you grab the hand and say “Talk to me” you see the dead. If you keep going and say “I let you in” you will be possessed by the dead. You'll have to check out my review to hear more. It stars outstanding up and coming actress Sophie Wilde, veteran actress Miranda Otto from the Lord Of The Rings movies and newcomers Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Zoe Terakes, Chris Alosio, Marcus Johnson. Snapshot Review: Talk to Me is a brilliant take on a classic possession movie for the modern age. It's a cautionary tale masquerading as a haunting minimalist horror film who's strength lies in its emotionally gifted ensemble. This directorial debut of twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou demonstrates both their love of horror and a faith in relying on impactful, yet gnarly, practical effects, stellar sound design, a wicked use of dark humor in a twisted well-written narrative to carry the story. If you like your movies to drop you directly into the mix, then Talk To Me's opening is for you. Built for the meme and chronically online generation, Talk to Me leans into genre conventions and an incisive script about grief, depression, youthful disregard of danger. Just know that opening is all foreshadowing. Thankfully it's the kind where the pay-off is not only worth it but never proves more interesting than the movie you ultimately get. The reactions are constantly age-appropriate. So prepare for teenage angst and stupidity to abound. The visuals are murky, occasionally out of focus, and constantly building a sense of unease and foreboding. But there's a profoundness in its simplicity. So lean into the sense of inevitable and the horrific trainwreck that is Mia's (Sophie Wilde) journey into the supernatural. We review the new A24 horror movie starring Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, and Joe Bird
This week, James and Jon are covering Talk to Me, written by Danny Philipou and Bill Hinzman, directed by Danny Philipou and Michael Philipou, and starring Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, Zoe Terakes, Chris Alosio, Marcus Johnson, and Alexandria Steffenson. Together, they cover the types of horror movies they're fans of, that this movie is not the 2007 Don Cheadle/Kasi Lemmons film of the same name, the degree to which it feels like an A24 movie despite being an A24 acquisition, just how (effectively) annoying the kid performances are, the film's depiction of possession as a social media phenomenon, scary hands, and more!SUBSCRIBE TO EXCLUSIVE CONTENT AND OUR BACK CATALOG OF 400+ EPISODES: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/7655b7ec-dc57-47c9-ab96-1a8fa02f6573/exclusive-content JOIN OUR PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/BMCJFOLLOW BLACK MEN CAN'T JUMP [IN HOLLYWOOD]:https://twitter.com/blackmenpodcasthttps://www.instagram.com/blackmenpodcastBUY BLACK MEN CAN'T JUMP [IN HOLLYWOOD] MERCH:https://www.teepublic.com/stores/black-men-can-t-jump-in-hollywoodProduced by Skyler HanrathOur Sponsors:* Check out BetterHelp : betterhelp.com/JUMP* Check out Earnin and use my code Jump for a great deal: www.earnin.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/black-men-cant-jump-in-hollywood/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
