The goddess of AMC Theaters, Nicole Kidman, hits the silver screen with the new erotic thriller Babygirl. Whether or not it was erotic or a thriller will be debated in this steamy episode. The film is written and directed by Halina Reijn (Bodies Bodies Bodies) and stars a high-powered CEO, played by Kidman, who begins an affair with young intern Harris Dickinson. Kidman's husband is played by the always sexy Antonio Banderas, and the film also stars Sophie Wilde as Kidman's assistant. We caught this one in theaters with a full audience that was ready for a sexy good time. This A24 movie was a box office success, which will hopefully pave the way for future erotic thrillers!

We'll also dive into the film's sweeping success at film festivals and its laudable reviews on IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Letterboxd.Have you ever wondered how smartphone culture shapes our experiences and perceptions, especially in the realm of modern horror? We'll explore this theme deeply as Brandon shares an anecdote from a midnight screening of "Evil Dead." This episode examines the film's portrayal of social media's influence on today's youth, the haunting isolation caused by our camera phones, and how these elements intertwine with grief and trauma. Finally, we discuss the grotesque and unsettling scenes that make "Talk To Me" unforgettable, from bone-chilling possessions to manipulative spirits preying on vulnerable characters. We'll debate the film's ambiguous ending and its impact on audience satisfaction, then shift gears to compare hype and expectations across films like Barbie, Oppenheimer, and upcoming cult favorites. Sophie Wilde's work in Talk to Me is the epitome of a “breakout performance.” Not only did the film go from Sundance darling to one of the biggest smash hits of 2023, but Wilde herself received the praise she deserved for an incredibly demanding and exceptionally well executed lead performance. In fact, Wilde's work as Mia is one of the main reasons why Talk to Me is so much more than a cool horror movie with a super creative high concept. Yes, the A24 acquisition delivers big when it comes to the thrill of watching a group of naive teenagers willingly becoming possessed via the now-iconic hand, but much of the movie's depth comes from how Mia's grief makes her susceptible to losing herself in the midst of this sinister high.In addition to being showered with critical praise and winning Best Lead Actress in Film at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, Wilde just scored one of the most coveted honors for a newcomer in this industry. She was nominated for the BAFTA's EE Rising Star Award alongside Phoebe Dynevor, Ayo Edebiri, Jacob Elordi, and Mia McKenna-Bruce. Win or lose, the nomination alone is a significant achievement, one that often signals a long, illustrious career to come.In celebration of that nomination, Wilde joined me for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to revisit some of her early steps in the industry and to recap her journey with Talk to Me. Uh oh. Co-hosts, Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts disagree on the realism of the teenage horror drama "Talk to Me". Twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou make their directorial debut on this highly praised modern-day take on the ouija board, in which teens use the severed hand of a median to get high and converse with the dead! We ask the tough questions: does this film propagate a stereotype of stupid teenagers? Do they have a plan? Did Jamie ever have a plan during his teenage antics? Is this the worst dog in horror movie history? How will they franchise this story? Plus we take another look at the numbers in our new segment Monster Metrics! A group of teenage friends summon spirits using a disembodied forearm and hand encased in plaster, and things go as you might expect. Matt & Ashley review the new horror movie, Talk To Me, in this episode.
The best thing a horror movie can do is make you think about it long after the end credits roll. A24 Studios specializes at releasing these kind of horror movies. Is Talk To Me one of those? Check out this spoiler-free review to find out. Directors Danny and Michael Phillipou present their very first feature-length movie and it was good enough to get into Sundance and get bought by A24. It tells the story of Mia whose mother died relatively recently. To find some comfort for the grief, she agrees to take part in a ritual where you're possessed by the dead. The ritual centers around a ceramic hand that contains an embalmed hand. You light a candle to open the doorway then you grab the hand and say “Talk to me” you see the dead. If you keep going and say “I let you in” you will be possessed by the dead. You'll have to check out my review to hear more. It stars outstanding up and coming actress Sophie Wilde, veteran actress Miranda Otto from the Lord Of The Rings movies and newcomers Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Zoe Terakes, Chris Alosio, Marcus Johnson.
This week, James and Jon are covering Talk to Me, written by Danny Philipou and Bill Hinzman, directed by Danny Philipou and Michael Philipou, and starring Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, Zoe Terakes, Chris Alosio, Marcus Johnson, and Alexandria Steffenson. Together, they cover the types of horror movies they're fans of, that this movie is not the 2007 Don Cheadle/Kasi Lemmons film of the same name, the degree to which it feels like an A24 movie despite being an A24 acquisition, just how (effectively) annoying the kid performances are, the film's depiction of possession as a social media phenomenon, scary hands, and more!SUBSCRIBE TO EXCLUSIVE CONTENT AND OUR BACK CATALOG OF 400+ EPISODES: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/7655b7ec-dc57-47c9-ab96-1a8fa02f6573/exclusive-content JOIN OUR PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/BMCJFOLLOW BLACK MEN CAN'T JUMP [IN HOLLYWOOD]:https://twitter.com/blackmenpodcasthttps://www.instagram.com/blackmenpodcastBUY BLACK MEN CAN'T JUMP [IN HOLLYWOOD] MERCH:https://www.teepublic.com/stores/black-men-can-t-jump-in-hollywoodProduced by Skyler HanrathOur Sponsors:* Check out BetterHelp : betterhelp.com/JUMP* Check out Earnin and use my code Jump for a great deal: www.earnin.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/black-men-cant-jump-in-hollywood/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
