Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Tom Holland's fourth outing as Peter Parker/Spider-Man opened to a massively successful box office, shattering the domestic opening record previously held by Avengers: Endgame, and raking in nearly $1 billion globally in its first weekend alone - so while it beat Endgame's North American opening take, it comes in just behind it globally. Not a bad start for Disney and Marvel Studios as the conversation around superhero movies ebbs and flows in the zeitgeist. Those numbers exclude the premium IMAX format, as Spidey couldn't web up those screens due to The Odyssey still holding all IMAX screens. While Marvel is on their Spidey high, other headlines have circled the news this week - some good and some disappointing. On a positive note - Samara Weaving has reportedly been cast as Emma Frost. Horror fans will recognize Weaving from the Ready or Not films. Obsession breakout star Inde Navarette confirmed her meeting with Jake Schreier and she mentioned interest in playing Mystique. And for the bad news, Wonder Man will not get a season two after all - even though it was confirmed earlier this year - and both Kevin Feige and Maershala Ali expressed regret about the Blade film; with Feige admitting he feels like a failure for not getting it off the ground and Ali saying he's done with the project. Last week, DC Studios and HBO's Booster Gold series writer David Jenkins said that the project is no longer moving forward. Shortly after he made this statement, IGN reported that the series will, in fact, be moving forward, but with a new creative team. The New York Times reported that Barbie 2 is currently stalled, with Warner Bros. struggling to come to terms with lead talent Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, and Ryan Gosling. The studio has until December to reach a deal before the right revert back to Mattel. Stephen King's 1996 novel Desperation is getting a film adaptation from Final Destination: Bloodlines directing duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein. Sam Raimi will also produce the feature, his first time working with King. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, which opens in theaters on December 25. The film returns franchise stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan. Amazon MGM Studios is developing a Warhammer 40k animated event series alongside the upcoming live-action version, sources close to the project confirmed to Deadline. Additionally, Henry Cavill, who is set to star, is also on board to be an executive producer.Dave Bautista is in talks to take on the lead role of Kratos in Prime Video's God of War series, replacing Ryan Hurst, who had to drop out of production after he sustained an on set stunt injury. Mary Holland, Star of Ghosts and The Little House on the Prairie, has been cast in a lead role as Sandra in the upcoming DC Studios and HBO Max Superman spin off series that centers on Jimmy Olsen. In a recent interview with Inverse, Jessica Henwick revealed that she declined an offer to reprise her role as Colleen Wing in Daredevil: Born Again season three because she wants to protect the character's perfect ending in Netflix's Iron Fist.

God of War Season 2 Recasts Atreus and Thrud: Time Jump Confirmed and Filming Restarts in October

Amazon Prime Video's God of War series is shaking up its cast again, and this time it's by design. On this episode of Geek Freaks Headlines, Frank breaks down the report (via Polygon) that Atreus and Thrud are being recast for Season 2. The Season 2 casting call lists "Joshua" and "Ruth," the same codenames used for these characters in Season 1, but with the age range pushed up to 17 when it previously topped out at 12.Frank explains what that age bump signals: the show is doing a time jump between seasons, just like the games did, and rather than letting the young actors grow into the older roles, production is simply casting new performers. It also points to a clear structure for the series: one game per season. Season 1 covers the first game, Season 2 moves into the sequel, no stretching a single game across multiple years of TV.Plus, the Kratos situation is still unresolved after Ryan Hurst's injury, but there's good news on the production front: cameras roll again in October.00:00 Casting update: Atreus and Thrud recast for Season 2, per Polygon00:24 Why the recast points to a time jump, new actors instead of aging up, and the "one game per season" structure00:38 Kratos still uncast after Ryan Hurst's injury, filming resumes in OctoberAtreus and Thrud are being recast for God of War Season 2The Season 2 casting call uses the Season 1 codenames "Joshua" (Atreus) and "Ruth" (Thrud)The listed age range now goes up to 17, where it previously topped out at 12The jump points to a time skip between seasons, matching the gap between the two gamesProduction is casting new actors rather than letting the current young cast age into the rolesThe series looks set to do one game per season: Season 1 for the first game, Season 2 for the sequelKratos still needs to be recast following Ryan Hurst's injuryFilming resumes in October after a pause tied to that injury"Atreus and Thrud are both being recast.""Instead of letting the actors age up, they're just going to be casting new ones.""Season one, game one. Doomsday Trailer at Last, Odyssey Makes Bank, and The Batman II Delayed

Multiverse News

Marvel Studios finally gave us something to whet our appetites regarding Avengers: Doomsday as they dropped the first full-length trailer on Monday. Old and new favorite heroes are coming together to band against the biggest threat they've ever encountered, Doctor Victor Von Doom.Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated film The Odyssey premiered last weekend to a box office best for the savant director, opening to $264.1 million globally. With a stacked A-list cast, Nolan's flair and drive for practical filmmaking, and a huge push to see the movie in IMAX (since it was filmed that way,) this entry to Nolan's repertoire has been as long-awaited as Odysseus' return to Ithaca. And clearly…the people are liking what they see. For 2026, The Odyssey has the third best opening weekend behind Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II is being delayed once again and will now open in theaters on February 18, 2028. That release date is nearly six years after the March 2022 opening of The Batman. Reeves announced the new opening date on Vimeo accompanied by the first camera test footage of Robert Pattinson's return as the Dark Knight. Pattinson began filming during the press tour for The Odyssey, which he was also part of. At an appearance at Fanatics Fest 2026, Ryan Reynolds confirmed that there will be another Deadpool movie at some point in the future, although he did not provide any more details past that confirmation. After calling New York City home for almost 90 years, Marvel Comics will be relocating to Burbank, California, the current headquarters of Marvel Studios and corporate parent, The Walt Disney Company. Stephen Wacker, a respected veteran comics editor who also earned an Emmy nomination for his work in the company's forays in animation, has been named Marvel's new editor-in-chief, replacing outgoing chief C.B. Cebulski, who had steered the division since 2017. The move also leaves NYC without a major comics publisher, as DC Comics relocated to California in 2015. Amazon Prime Video‘s God of War series will recast the starring role of Kratos following an injury to the original actor Ryan Hurst on set that he suffered in late June. While performing a stunt, Hurst tore his bicep and had to undergo surgery. His recovery timetable puts him out until early 2027 at best. Sources tell Deadline that four episodes had been fully completed at the time of the incident. Colman Domingo and Tony-nominated director Robert O'Hara are in talks to co-write a live action film based on Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog for Disney. It is not described as a live-action remake of The Princess and the Frog, but rather a story inspired by the original film. In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Kevin Feige spoke on the Mahershala Ali Blade reboot that has yet to materialize saying "I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn't get off the ground with Mahershala." He was also asked about Adam Driver as Magneto rumors and responded “It's no secret we'd like to [work with Driver], but it's a tradition to Zoom with him, and then he passes. That's a long-lived tradition."

The Batman fans, brace yourselves: Part II just slid all the way to February 2028, and the guys have thoughts on whether it should even happen. Before Frank ships out for a two-week cruise, he and Jonathan clear the week's biggest geek headlines, from a live-action Princess Tiana penned by Colman Domingo, to a major God of War series recast, to Steve Buscemi joining the Far Cry show and a quick DC and Marvel roundup covering Blue Beetle, Supergirl, and Nova. Then the episode shifts gears for a standout interview with writer and director Stephanie Hubbard, the creative force behind the new fantasy comedy A Fairy Tale. She breaks down her leap from hairstylist to filmmaker, how Pure Magic Pictures built a fully connected nine-film universe on indie budgets, the real trading card game (Dino Guru) her cast learned to play on set, and why a thriving Discord community beats chasing Netflix. It is a genuinely fun look at building fandom from the ground up. Timestamps and Topics 0:00 Intro and Frank's Vacation Catch-Up 1:01 Colman Domingo's Live-Action Princess Tiana 6:08 God of War Series Recasts Kratos 10:27 Far Cry Series Adds Steve Buscemi 16:05 The Batman Part II Delayed to 2028 23:18 DC and Marvel Roundup: Blue Beetle, Supergirl, Nova 33:11 Guest Interview: Stephanie Hubbard on "A Fairy Tale" 1:07:46 Weekly Picks and Wrap-Up Key Takeaways The Batman Part II is delayed to February 18, 2028, and the hosts debate whether the six-year gap makes the sequel worth finishing at all, especially with a separate DCU Batman on the way. The God of War series is recasting Kratos after actor Ryan Hurst suffered a torn bicep. With two seasons filming back to back, four already-shot episodes will need a full reshoot. Colman Domingo is writing a live-action Princess Tiana that tells a new New Orleans story rather than remaking The Princess and the Frog, which the guys see as a smarter path than the recent one-for-one remakes. Noah Hawley and Rob McElhenney's Far Cry series lands its first big villain casting in Steve Buscemi, with the hosts riffing on possible settings and story angles. Stephanie Hubbard's A Fairy Tale is the ninth feature in Pure Magic Pictures' fully connected cinematic universe, premiering July 23 at 7:30 PM Eastern, with the studio on track for four films in 2026. Pure Magic built real fan infrastructure around the movies: an actual trading card game (Dino Guru) the cast learned on set, a Discord community that names things like their coffee blend, and a heavy convention presence. Quotes "Not all fairies are good at their job." (Stephanie Hubbard, on the premise of A Fairy Tale) "When I try to be someone's savior, it doesn't go very well. I'm just a person." (Stephanie Hubbard, on the film's message) "No excuses. The cavalry isn't coming." (Stephanie Hubbard, on the Robert Rodriguez mindset that pushed her into filmmaking) "We make movies, but we're truly artists first, and this is our art." (Stephanie Hubbard, on community and creating) "Maybe in 30 years, we will make Time Pit." (Stephanie Hubbard, on the running in-universe reference in every Pure Magic film) Call to Action If you enjoyed the episode, subscribe wherever you listen so you never miss a drop, leave a rating and review to help new listeners find the show, and share it with a fellow geek on social using #GeekFreaksPodcast. In today's Daily Fix:It's been almost nothing but bad news for Xbox and its subsidiaries ever since CEO Asha Sharma announced the great and terrible Xbox reset of 2026. But there is some silver lining to all of the chaos: Bethesda Studios head Todd Howard has announced a roadmap for the company's IP including Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Starfield. Confirmed are remakes of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and the next mainline game, Fallout 5, is in development. But right now their biggest priority is The Elder Scrolls 6, which we've seen nothing of save for a teaser trailer back in 2018. In other gaming adjacent news, the God of War live-action series encountered a major setback when star Ryan Hurst suffered a torn bicep and will need to be recast. Apparently the recovery time will be too long and his 12-year-old co-star Callum Vinson will likely have aged noticeably enough for the footage not to match. And finally, we have this week's latest gaming releases.

He covers why the surgery recovery timeline of four to six months, and possibly up to a year, made waiting impossible, what the mid-August prep and October production restart means for the show's schedule, and why the four completed episodes will need to be reshot. With two seasons filming back to back, the production simply could not stay on hold. Host Pete Deeley interviews Ryan Hurst of GMB Fitness about how martial arts shaped his life and teaching. Hurst began martial arts in high school, visited Japan at 18, and an influential kendo instructor encouraged him to stay; a planned short exchange became 28 years in Japan, including training connected to police/self-defense groups and working eight years at a martial arts complex in a shrine. He emphasizes posture, breath, and mindset as core principles for both fighting and life. After moving back to the U.S. four years ago, injuries and cultural differences in training made him consider quitting, leading him to form the non-competitive, free "Jiú Kai" group focused on longevity and mutual benefit. He discusses judo maxims (maximum efficiency, mutual welfare/respect, and pausing to ask "is this necessary?"), training modes (maintenance, exploration, "monk mode"), and how being an outsider improved his coaching awareness. Frank and Thomas are back after a week-long hiatus to tackle a geek culture landscape that has completely shifted! We're breaking down the industry-shaking news of the Paramount and Warner Brothers merger—discussing why this $110 billion deal might be a disaster for writers and original storytelling. Plus, we dive deep into the first trailers for The Boys Season 5 and the DCU's Lanterns. From Butcher's "Venom-like" powers to the True Detective vibes of Hal Jordan and John Stewart, we leave no stone unturned. We also address the viral God of War "AI" image controversy and drop a "Question of the Week" take that might get us roasted: Is Dune actually overhyped? Timestamps and Topics 00:00 – Welcome Back: Convention prep for WonderCon and our recent interview with Lenore Zann (the voice of Rogue!). 02:37 – The Hot Seat: Which "masterpiece" is actually trash? Why Dune didn't connect and why Scream feels like "Fast and Furious with Ghost Masks." 05:50 – The Boys Final Season: Analyzing Butcher's new powers, Homelander in the White House, and A-Train's incredible 180-degree character arc. 11:51 – Lanterns First Look: The "True Detective" aesthetic, Kyle Chandler's "Old Dog" Hal Jordan, and the mystery of the "Only Human" Green Lanterns. 15:40 – Suit Check: Why the physical, weathered suits in Lanterns are a win for the DCU. 22:53 – God of War Drama: Was the leaked Kratos image AI? Breaking down the "cosplay" look and Ryan Hurst's cryptic warning. 30:12 – Game of Thrones Movie: An Aegon's Conquest film is coming from the writer of Andor and House of Cards. 40:31 – The $110B Mega-Merger: Why the Paramount/WB merger is "Paramount doing Paramount things" and the danger of studios only making "safe bets." 51:00 – Project Helix & IP Waste: Xbox's next move and why Paramount is sitting on a goldmine of GI Joe, Star Trek, and TMNT content. 01:12:57 – Frank's Recommendation: Pokémon Fire Red/Leaf Green on the Switch for that ultimate nostalgia hit. Key Takeaways The Death of the Mid-Tier Movie: The Paramount/WB merger threatens the future of original stories as studios pivot exclusively to established IP. A-Train's Redemption: The Boys has successfully transitioned A-Train from a Season 1 villain to a core member of the resistance. Grounded DCU: By embracing a procedural, "True Detective" vibe for Lanterns, James Gunn is focusing on character dynamics over pure spectacle. Marketing Mishaps: The God of War image controversy highlights a growing fan distrust of early production reveals and "AI-looking" marketing. Memorable Quotes "It's just Fast and Furious with Ghost Mask... it feels so repetitive and I'm just so done with it." — Frank on the Scream franchise. "Earth blowing up is not a 0% chance. Kennedy still has an active hand as an executive producer of both Star War's next theatrical offerings: May's The Mandalorian & Grogu as well as 2027's Starfighter and will continue to produce other projects independently. Kennedy's tenure saw its fair share of highs and lows, especially contending with an often fickle fandom, but with multibillion dollar films under her belt her exit marks the end of an era.It was a surprisingly noteworthy MLK weekend box office– outside of Avatar: Fire & Ash's continuing reign, Marty Supreme became A24's top-performing film of all time with 80 million dollars domestically, surpassing Everything Everywhere All at Once, while Zootopia 2 became the highest-grossing animated film of all time globally with over 1.7 billion dollars, passing Inside Out 2. Meanwhile, Nia DaCosta's 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple opened below expectations with just 15 million dollars over the four-day weekend, falling well short of the 30-million-dollar debut of its predecessor and behind tracking projections of 20 million dollars. Despite the horror sequel's muted debut, it's been an unusually robust box office this January.Netflix has revised its $83 billion dollar deal for Warner Bros. Discovery to an all-cash transaction valued at $27.75 dollars per share, simplifying the structure to provide greater certainty of value for shareholders and accelerate the path to a shareholder vote by April. The amended deal, unanimously approved by both boards, maintains the same per-share valuation while WBD stockholders will still receive additional value from shares of Discovery Global following its spinoff, with Netflix financing the deal through cash on hand, credit facilities and committed financing. This update comes on the heels of Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos' renewed promise to keep WB studio films in theaters for at least 45 days before hitting streaming.Prime Video has released a first look photo of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider series, which has begun production.Hans Zimmer, who has scored more than 500 movies and TV projects, will officially score the upcoming Harry Potter series for HBO Max in partnership with Bleeding Fingers Music, a composer collective that he co-founded.Sons of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst has been cast as main character Kratos in Amazon's upcoming God of War series, which is currently confirmed for two seasons and has begun pre-production. Teresa Palmer was also cast last week and will play Sif, Thor's wife and the goddess of family.Cate Blanchett has signed a deal to reprise her role as Viking warrior Valka in Universal Pictures' live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2.Warner Bros. has set Jorge R. Gutiérrez to direct an animated feature centering on the classic Looney Tunes character Speedy Gonzales, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.

As PlayStation's aggressive pursuit of crossmedia success continues, we have a new piece of news worth considering in the form of the casting of Kratos in Amazon's upcoming God of War series. 6'6" American actor Ryan Hurst has won the coveted role, joining notable writers, directors, and a famous showrunner to make what could very well be Sony's most promising TV property yet. We discuss. Plus: A notorious developer known for more than a thousand asset flip-slash-Trophy farming games has all of its titles removed from the PSN, compelling evidence circulates that 2016's The Division is getting a Definitive Edition on PS5 somewhat imminently, Xbox's Fable joins Avowed as yet another game slated for Sony's console, Call of Duty sales purportedly plummet 60% year-over-year, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! With Colin only a few Platinums away from 200, is there any game he's specifically targeting for the milestone? Following the closure of Meta's largest VR studios, is the pursuit of virtual reality in games officially dead? Could Sea of Thieves be the actual, original extraction shooter (for lack of a better term)? Do we anticipate we'll ever win the Golden Globe for Best Podcast?
