A new benchmark for corporate success has arrived. China's latest ranking of its top private companies is out, and the bar for entry is now a staggering 27 billion yuan ($3.8 billion USD) in revenue. In Spain, property owners are increasingly turning to private companies to eject unwanted tenants or squatters – "okupas", as they're dubbed in Spanish. The use of private firms to persuade squatters to leave properties is banned in some countries like France. The majority of illegal home occupiers are Spanish families or foreigners struggling to make ends meet, who don't have anywhere else to live. FRANCE 24's Maude Petit-Jové and Sarah Morris report on the methods employed by these private companies, a symbol of Spain's worsening housing crisis.
In a highly unusual move, the Trump Administration announced the government will take a 10 percent equity stake in computer chipmaker Intel. The new arrangement makes the U.S. government the largest shareholder in Intel, a relationship many economists, policy experts and elected officials say is problematic, unnecessary and signals an overreach of presidential power. Earlier in August, fellow chipmakers Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices agreed to pay the United States 15 percent of their revenue from selling chips in China. We talk about what those deals mean, the administration's strategy and why experts say this is a step toward fascism. Today we're reviewing the state of the private markets using the NEW benchmarks released by Mostly Metrics. We surveyed our readers to see how their company's are doing… And it's tough to be a company between $5M and $25M in revenue right now.Three other things that stood out from the benchmarks this quarter:1️⃣ CAC Payback is up across the board. It's taking longer to earn back customer acquisition costs. AI is disrupting traditional search channels, and companies are building internal tooling instead of buying when it makes sense.2️⃣ Revenue is coming from existing bases. Net Dollar Retention is doing the heavy lifting — especially beyond $25M ARR. Expansion efficiency is becoming the key growth lever.3️⃣ Burn multiples keep falling. In reaction to expensive growth, capital efficiency is trending up. Even companies under $25M ARR are showing discipline.Get the whole 33 page report hereThis week's podcast is brought to you by Campfire (www.campfire.ai)We've all used legacy ERPs. What does it truly mean to be an entrepreneur or an investor—not just in terms of dollars and deals, but in the way we think about money, wealth, and possibility? In this special rebranding episode of The Angel Next Door Podcast, host Marcia Dawood invites us to pause and reconsider our most fundamental beliefs about investing and wealth. With over 130 episodes under her belt, Marcia prompts listeners to reflect on the invisible barriers that keep so many—especially women and those from underrepresented backgrounds—on the sidelines of early stage investing. This 7-minute episode features Marcia herself at the helm, sharing insights from her journey as a longtime angel investor, author, and advocate for democratizing access to capital. Fresh off publishing her book "Do Good While Doing Well," Marcia brings a wealth of experience and perspective to the conversation. She speaks candidly about the responses she's received from both investors and entrepreneurs, highlighting the deep need for education, community, and personal reflection around financial topics that historically have been shrouded in jargon and exclusionary language. At its core, this episode marks a pivotal shift for the podcast as Marcia announces a reimagined focus—expanding the narrative beyond technical investing tips to encompass conversations about money, personal beliefs, systemic barriers, and new definitions of wealth. With "wealth reimagined" now part of the show's branding, listeners can look forward to richer, more inclusive explorations of what it means to invest, support founders, and use money as a force for good. Dr. Andrew Huberman is the world's most popular health and science podcaster (i.e. Huberman Lab). But could he also be the world's most prolific investor in privately held wellness companies? And since Andrew Huberman keeps the details of his business transactions discreet…there's almost zero public information on this subject matter. Yet…the camouflage Huberman utilizes is within my deep domain expertise, making it simpler to guesstimate his secret investment portfolio. But let's start with the two most publicized (both occurring in 2024), which was Huberman investing in the foodtech startup David Protein and then partnering with an investment firm to acquire a majority stake in the Canadian yerba mate brand Mateína. Additionally, Huberman holds scientific advisory board positions with the following companies: Eight Sleep, WHOOP, Athletic Greens, and Momentous. And as part of those compensation packages…it's very likely he received advisory shares.

Critical minerals are required for the manufacturing of electronics, aerospace equipment, medical devices, and renewable energy technologies, making them essential for a country's economic and national security. These materials have been at the center of China's domestic and foreign policy for many decades, and China's ability to integrate internal industrial policies with foreign trade and investment policies has allowed them to gain dominance in the market. Meanwhile, the US has lagged behind China in terms of both access to and processing technology of critical minerals. The country has been heavily dependent on China for its critical minerals and struggles to find an alternative supplier.China's announcement to impose export restrictions on seven rare earth elements on April 4th has opened many conversations surrounding critical minerals, especially regarding the US and its supply chain vulnerabilities. What has China done to achieve their global dominance in the critical minerals sector, and what can the US do to address the overdependence issue they are facing today? To answer these questions and more, host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Gracelin Baskaran, the director of the Critical Minerals Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. She is a mining economist whose area of expertise is critical minerals and trade. Brookfield CEO Bruce Flatt reveals the investment philosophy behind building one of the world's largest alternative asset managers with over a trillion dollars under management. At the core of Brookfield's strategy is a disciplined focus on downside protection that has delivered 19% annualized returns over 30 years. Flatt identifies three major trends driving their investments: digitalization (including AI infrastructure), global energy transition, and reindustrialization as supply chains shift. The conversation explores Brookfield's approach to risk management, their expansion into insurance, and their meritocratic culture. When Shane presses for clarity on Brookfield's complex corporate structure, Flatt provides rare insights into how the organization's design creates both operational flexibility and investment opportunities. What separates Brookfield from competitors? Patient capital: the discipline to wait for extraordinary opportunities and the financial strength to act when others can't. If you want to understand how the smartest capital allocators think and what it takes to build something enduring, this episode is essential listening. In this episode of Absolute Trust Talk, host Kirsten Howe continues her valuation discussion with expert Alex Spaete from Bridge Forensic CPAs, exploring the intricacies of asset valuation. The discussion focuses on how privately held assets are valued, particularly examining discount factors applied to LLC interests based on control limitations and marketability constraints. Alex explains how family dynamics influence valuations, especially when implicit control exists despite limited ownership percentages. The conversation covers valuation approaches for unusual assets like promissory notes and accounts receivable, with Alex sharing real-world examples, including commercial rag manufacturing and Weather Derivatives. This show highlights why professional valuation expertise is essential when dealing with complex assets during estate planning, business transitions, or divorce settlements. Time-stamped Show Notes: 0:00 Introduction 2:48 Diving back into the discussion, Alex breaks down the two main components of discounts: control factors and liquidity considerations that affect final valuations. 4:10 Here, we explore how operating agreements significantly impact valuation and what control considerations you should be aware of. 4:49 Gain insights on the fascinating impact of family dynamics on valuations, mainly how they come into play in divorce scenarios. 8:17 Find out whether the IRS requires taking discounts when available and the tax implications of valuation choices. 11:06 Alex explains the complexities of valuing promissory notes and how changing interest rates can dramatically affect their worth. 12:27 Before signing off, you must hear more about Alex's most interesting case studies, including an unusual rag-making business and complex weather derivatives.

Because today, both the BWSSB and Denta Water have a vested interest in solving Bangalore's water crisis. But one has had more luck than the other. Tune in. In this insightful episode of Absolute Trust Talk, host Kirsten Howe welcomes Alex Spaete, a valuation expert and partner with Bridge Forensic CPAs. In part one of their discussion, Kirsten and Alex explore the complex world of asset valuation, particularly focusing on closely held businesses and real estate holding partnerships. Alex explains why valuing private entities requires specialized expertise beyond what's needed for bank accounts or publicly traded securities. The discussion clarifies the critical distinction between owning a percentage of a business entity versus owning the underlying assets themselves. Alex details the two primary approaches to valuation—net asset value and income analysis—and how they apply to different types of business structures. Whether you're planning your estate or simply curious about business valuations, this episode provides valuable foundational knowledge about how professionals determine what complex assets are truly worth. Time-stamped Show Notes: 0:00 Introduction 3:14 To kick things off, we talk about why asset valuation matters in estate planning, particularly for complex assets. 4:35 Next, Alex explains his focus on closely held companies and non-publicly traded entities. 6:24 Now, we will dive into common valuation scenarios, particularly for privately held businesses and real estate holding partnerships. 8:02 Listen here for an explanation of real estate holding partnerships and how they differ from direct property ownership. 11:07 Learn about understanding net asset value as a critical starting point for business valuation methodologies. 12:54 Discover the important concept of discounting in valuations and why the sum of parts may not equal the whole value.

Many of the world's most exciting, high-growth and disruptive companies are private. Moreover, the entrepreneurs running them are typically keeping them private for longer before trading their shares on public stock exchanges – and in some cases have no plans to do so. Baillie Gifford's Private Companies Team seeks out exciting businesses and founders in this space to give our clients access to an increasingly important source of long-term growth. Taking a highly selective approach, it has invested more than $9bn across over 140 firms over the past 12 years. In this podcast, Alexander Nicolier explains how it does so and discusses some of our notable holdings. Background: Alexander Nicolier is an investment manager in our Private Companies Team. In this Disruption Week briefing, he reveals the scale of the opportunity and the increasing impact that the sector's restless founders and their exceptional companies are delivering. From SpaceX to Bending Spoons, Epic Games to ByteDance, one of the distinguishing features of these pioneering firms is that they've been able to choose their shareholders. Nicolier reveals why Baillie Gifford's patient approach and reputation have helped make us a favoured partner. He also reveals how deep research helps him and his colleagues embrace the uncertainty that can be involved with backing companies at an earlier stage of growth than many public market stocks. And he introduces some of his team's most recent investments, including the immersive experience specialist Cosm and the next-generation computing company Tenstorrent.
