The more interesting argument is about property rights: the 1967 Outer Space Treaty bars nations from claiming celestial bodies but is silent on private companies, and Zitelmann argues the legal gap will be filled the same way the American West was — settlers took the land first, government legalized it later. He explains why AI is simply a tool, not a strategy, and why many organizations struggle with implementation due to lack of clarity, adoption, and unrealistic expectations. The conversation also explores how private equity-backed and middle market companies are shifting toward smaller, high-ROI use cases rather than large-scale transformations. Mariano shares how decision-making has evolved, why speed alone is no longer a competitive advantage, and why human-led strategy and thoughtful implementation remain critical for driving meaningful outcomes in a rapidly changing landscape.Connect with Mariano Jurich hereLearn more about Making Sense LLC hereConnect with Julie Keyes, Keyestrategies LLCFounder, Consultant, Author, Pod-caster and Instructor

In this episode, the Rational Reminder team unpacks the mechanics and implications of mega IPOs like SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic potentially entering public indices. They explore how index funds handle IPO inclusion, why newly public stocks tend to underperform, and how structural features of indexing can lead to systematically buying high and selling low. The conversation dives into academic research on IPO returns, the role of free float in index construction, and how evolving market dynamics are forcing index providers to reconsider long-standing rules. They also examine alternative approaches from firms like Dimensional and Avantis, and whether investors are truly missing out by not accessing private markets. This episode blends market structure, empirical evidence, and investor behaviour into a nuanced look at one of the most talked-about investing topics today.   Key Points From This Episode: (0:00:04) Introduction to the Rational Reminder Podcast and hosts. (0:00:19) PWL Capital expands to Vancouver through partnership with Macdonald Shymko & Company. (0:03:45) Main topic: "Mega IPOs" and concerns about index fund exposure. (0:05:00) Why large private companies going public matters for index investors. (0:06:55) Index funds aim to represent markets—not optimize returns. (0:08:41) Massive scale of index funds and implications for IPO demand. (0:10:19) Why IPOs tend to have low expected returns. (0:12:39) How index inclusion rules differ (S&P 500 vs total market indices). (0:15:53) Research on "fast-track" IPO inclusion and front-running effects. (0:18:59) Why mega IPOs may amplify existing inefficiencies. (0:20:39) Important reminder: indexing trade-offs are small and structural—not fatal. (0:21:29) Potential solutions like pre-allocating IPO shares to index funds. (0:23:24) The role of free float in determining index weight. (0:25:00) NASDAQ rule changes and implications for low-float mega IPOs. (0:27:40) Conflict of interest concerns in index rule changes. (0:32:43) Why index providers may need to evolve with changing markets. (0:35:27) Historical changes to index methodology (e.g., float adjustment). (0:37:21) Why IPOs are historically poor investments ("new issues puzzle"). (0:40:28) Evidence from Dimensional on IPO underperformance. (0:41:14) IPOs behave like "junk" stocks (small, unprofitable, high growth). (0:43:04) Low-float IPOs and extreme underperformance data. (0:46:00) High valuations (price-to-sales) linked to worse IPO outcomes. (0:48:00) Index rebalancing as systematic "bad market timing." (0:50:03) Dimensional vs Avantis approaches to IPO inclusion. (0:52:56) Trade-offs and tracking error across different strategies. (0:54:16) Importance of investor discipline amid changing narratives. (0:56:00) Are investors missing out on private markets? (0:58:00) Risks and costs of accessing private shares (SPVs, fees, fraud). (1:00:15) Indirect exposure to private companies through public equities. (1:02:52) Final takeaway: index investing already captures most opportunities. (1:03:25) Wrap-up: IPOs are a known cost—not a reason to abandon indexing.   Links: Meet with PWL Capital: https://calendly.com/d/3vm-t2j-h3p Rational Reminder on iTunes — https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-rational-reminder-podcast/id1426530582. President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown has real human costs. Some 13 people have been shot by ICE and federal agents since September, two of which were fatal. The number of people held in detention centers increased by nearly 75 percent in 2025. Around 68,000 people are currently detained in these facilities, according to the latest ICE data. And those arrested with no criminal record rose by over 2,000 percent since Trump took office. That's according to a report last month from the American Immigration Council. That's a non-partisan non-profit focused on immigrant rights. But for private companies invested in the administration's agenda, that human cost has meant a hefty pay check. The private prison companies CoreCivic and The GEO Group have both reported $2 billion, or a 13 percent increase, in revenue in 2025. The two contractors opened nine new detention centers for ICE use.In this installment of our weekly politics series, “If You Can Keep It,” the private companies profiting from President Trump's immigration crackdown.Find more of our programs online. Shane Wheeler has lived leadership from multiple vantage points — as a Fire Chief, an EMS leader, and now the CEO of a rapidly growing regional mobile health organization. In this episode, Shane reflects on the parallels between public safety leadership and executive leadership, and why the skills chiefs develop over a career translate far beyond the firehouse. We explore the tension between kingdom vs. community, the shift from being a hands-on operator to a vision-setting leader, and the difficult discipline of keeping your hands out of the pie so others can grow. Shane shares candid lessons on loosening control, trusting your team, and moving from day-to-day operations into strategy and organizational vision. He also opens up about imposter syndrome, the importance of education and lifelong learning, why leaders must avoid pigeonholing themselves, and how transparency, humility, vulnerability, and accountability are not soft traits — but essential leadership tools. This conversation is a powerful reminder that leadership evolves, learning never stops, and pacing yourself matters if you want to lead for the long haul.

Send us a textLucy Baldwin, the Global Head of Research at Citigroup, is leading one of the most consequential shifts in how institutional research is done today. In this episode, we unpack how the sell-side research role is being completely redefined, moving beyond spreadsheets and earnings models to incorporate AI, storytelling, and differentiated data sets. Lucy explains why today's best analysts are as much creators and communicators as they are forecasters, and why research that can't break through the noise is effectively worthless. We also dig into how Citi is expanding its coverage beyond public equities to include private companies like OpenAI and SpaceX—companies too large and important to ignore, even if they aren't public. Lucy shares what that research looks like, how Citi is navigating regulatory and disclosure constraints, and why institutional clients are hungry for guidance in the growing universe of private markets. This isn't research as we knew it 10 years ago—and Lucy gives us a front-row seat to the transformation. Finally, we discuss how the perception of research on Wall Street is changing. Once viewed as a role that would pigeon hole you in terms of exit opportunities, research is now a launchpad for careers across the buy side, corporates, and private capital. Lucy shares how Citi is rethinking talent development, how AI is helping expand coverage capacity, and why the future belongs to analysts who can combine analytical rigor with creativity, conviction, and clarity of voice.Shop our Self Paced Courses: Investment Banking & Private Equity Fundamentals HEREFixed Income Sales & Trading HERE Wealthfront.com/wss. But this ignores the “big privates”—homebuilders privately owned but with the size and resources to act like a “national.” David Weekley Homes is definitely a big private. In a highly unusual move, the Trump Administration announced the government will take a 10 percent equity stake in computer chipmaker Intel. The new arrangement makes the U.S. government the largest shareholder in Intel, a relationship many economists, policy experts and elected officials say is problematic, unnecessary and signals an overreach of presidential power. Earlier in August, fellow chipmakers Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices agreed to pay the United States 15 percent of their revenue from selling chips in China. We talk about what those deals mean, the administration's strategy and why experts say this is a step toward fascism. Brookfield CEO Bruce Flatt reveals the investment philosophy behind building one of the world's largest alternative asset managers with over a trillion dollars under management.  At the core of Brookfield's strategy is a disciplined focus on downside protection that has delivered 19% annualized returns over 30 years. Flatt identifies three major trends driving their investments: digitalization (including AI infrastructure), global energy transition, and reindustrialization as supply chains shift. The conversation explores Brookfield's approach to risk management, their expansion into insurance, and their meritocratic culture. When Shane presses for clarity on Brookfield's complex corporate structure, Flatt provides rare insights into how the organization's design creates both operational flexibility and investment opportunities.  What separates Brookfield from competitors? Patient capital: the discipline to wait for extraordinary opportunities and the financial strength to act when others can't.  If you want to understand how the smartest capital allocators think and what it takes to build something enduring, this episode is essential listening.  Thanks to these sponsors for supporting our show:  NordVPN: EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal ➼ nordvpn.com/KNOWLEDGEPROJECT.
