Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast and the next movie in our 80s Dhamaka series is TRIDEV (1989). Directed and cowritten by Rajiv Rai, TRIDEV was a ginormous hit when it came out - enough for the Rais to repurpose it with Vishwatma a couple of years later. Starring Sunny Deol, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, Sangeeta Bijlani, Naseeruddin Shah, Sonam, Amrish Puri and Anupam Kher among others, Tridev is still famous for its songs, composed by Kalyanji-Anandji although a case could be made that this was just an early Viju Shah soundtrack. This movie embodies the 80s vibe in a way that few others can pull off. The fashion, the songs, the villains, the homoerotic tension, there's a lot to get through this week. A big Shoutout to our friend Dj Shai Guy for the 80's Dhamaka Theme song. You can check out more of Shai's work here
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast's 80s Dhamaaka series features 1985's MERI JUNG this week. Starring Anil Kapoor, Meenakshi Seshadri, Nutan and Amrish Puri in lead roles, this Subhash Ghai movie written by Javed Akhtar is about as nonsensical as masala cinema gets. It is also one of the great pleasures of our movie watching lives. With music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and Javed Jaffrey making his breakdancing debut, every kid from the 80s knows their Meri Jung. Join us to see if it stands up to our nostalgia. A big Shoutout to our friend Dj Shai Guy for the 80's Dhamaka Theme song. You can check out more of Shai's work here
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast's 80s Dhamaaka series continues with 1986's NAGINA. Arguably the most famous snake film made in the Hindi film industry, this Sridevi starrer shattered records with its blockbuster debut. Co-starring Rishi Kapoor and a mesmerising Amrish Puri, this movie had amazing music and iconic dance numbers that can never be replicated. Directed by Harmesh Malhotra and with music by Laxmikant Pyarelal, Nagina was shoo in on this list — but does it deserve the spot? Join us to find out. A big Shoutout to our friend Dj Shai Guy for the 80's Dhamaka Theme song. You can check out more of Shai's work here

Conceived, Written and Produced by Irfan Based on the book Pillars of Parallel Cinema by O.P. Srivastava Introduction to Podcasts: Pillars of Parallel Cinema In a world where Artificial Intelligence increasingly shapes our films, where voices, faces, and mannerisms are becoming deeply fake, we invite you on a journey back to a time, when cinema was a mirror to real life. This was an era where stories, characters, and settings were grounded in realism and human sensibilities. We are talking about the golden phase of Hindi cinema, known as Parallel Cinema-a movement unparalleled in the history of Indian cinema. Spanning from 1969 to 1999, this period stands out as the most creative and realistic phase in Indian cinema history. It gave birth to immortal films like Bhumika, Akrosh, Paar, and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, to name a few. The Parallel Cinema movement also introduced us to visionary filmmakers such as Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, Goutam Ghose, and Sai Paranjape. Additionally, this era brought forth an array of brilliant actors including Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Deepti Naval, Farooq Sheikh, Amrish Puri, Sadhu Meher, Surekha Sikri, and Mohan Agashe. In our new series of podcasts, Pillars of Parallel Cinema, we will explore some groundbreaking films meticulously selected by banker-turned-filmmaker OP Srivastava for his book Pillars of Parallel Cinema. Join us on this exciting journey to rediscover the essence of cinema that was not just a reflection of society, but also a powerful medium of expression that connected deeply with human experiences and emotions. The Book Pillars of Parallel Cinema The book offers a retrospective of 50 landmark films that defined Hindi parallel cinema, covering the period from the late 1960s to themid-1990s. It explores the emergence of parallel cinema as an alternative to mainstream Bollywood, emphasizing films driven by creative vision rather than commercial motivations. Srivastava highlights the socio-political contexts these films were set in and how they resonated with the middle-class audience by reflecting their realities. The book includes background stories about how each film was made and delves into the significant role these films played in shaping the "new wave" of Indian cinema. Filmmakers like Shyam Benegal, who contributed to this movement, praised the book for its comprehensive approach to documenting this important era in Indian film history. It could be a valuable read if you're interested in the history of Indian parallel cinema and the filmmaking processes behind some of its most iconic films. Buy on Amazon

If you're director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas, and you have been tasked with developing a sequel to one of the most beloved and highest grossing action adventures (Raiders of the Lost Ark) of all time, what do you do for a follow-up? Well in this case, you go broader, sillier, and DEFINITELY creepier! :o And apparently, you piss off millions of parents who were ok taking their children to see faces melting off on-screen for the previous one but draw the line at seeing some one rip the beating heart out of a man's chest! :o What resulted was the PG-13 rating and one of the highest grossing blockbusters of the '80's.....which was also savagely criticized for its high levels of violence and (somewhat justifiably) the cultural insensitivity of several of its characters and its overall setting. And one HELL of a ride featuring several memorable action set pieces and at least ONE beloved side character (Short Round played by future Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan). So on the verge of its 40th anniversary, how does this movie hold up? Let's find out as Harrison Ford is back as the titular hero along with several new cast-members including Amrish Puri, Roshan Seth, and Kate Capshaw. https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Rahman In the array of Hindi cinema, where each film weaves its own unique story, "Zubeidaa" emerges as a rich, intricate embroidery that stands out for its storytelling, character portrayal, and cinematic execution. Directed by the venerable Shyam Benegal, a luminary known for his contribution to parallel cinema in India, "Zubeidaa" is not just a film; it is an exploration of identity, love, and the pursuit of freedom, wrapped in the opulent yet tragic real-life story of Zubeidaa, played with unforgettable grace by Karisma Kapoor.

Last time we analyzed Raiders of the Lost Ark, and in Part 2 we'll be covering the last two movies: Temple of Doom and Last Crusade. Starting with arguably the weakest link of the trilogy and the "black sheep" of the film series, and ending with what many consider to be the peak of the franchise, it'll make for an... illuminating (read that in your best Sean Connery accent) discussion. This duo, for better or worse (almost entirely better) helped define the original Indiana Jones story, which in turn influenced cinema in ways we cannot overstate. In the new episode of the series we revisit Priyadarshan's 1993 film - Gardish. It's another film that has left quite an impression on both the hosts at one point. The film had a powerful and practical ending by the norms of the year it was released in. The film's focal plot is the complex father son dynamic - both Amrish Puri and Jackie Shroff are memorable in their respective performances. No conversation of Gardish will be complete without Mukesh Rishi's Billa Jillani. It was one of the most menacing debuts of that era. We disagree a bit on how the film has aged overall but the central characters are still as good as they were in 1993. On that note you can stop reading now and start playing the episode or go watch Gardish first and then listen to us chat about it.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardish

The 2023 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza goes to Adventure Movie Land this week as the guys chat about the iffy-but-fun 1984 prequel, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom! As much as this film has some great scenes and set pieces, that dinner scene was, is, and always shall be wretched! But, how fantastic is Ke Huy Quan's performance in this, along with his great chemistry with Ford? Is Willie Scott one of the most annoying characters in film history? And that entire mine cart sequence: Top 3 Indiana Jones action set piece, right? PLUS: An extended discussion on old-timey parachutes! Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom stars Harrison Ford, Ke Huy Quan, Kate Capshaw, Amrish Puri, Roshan Seth, Philip Stone, David Yip, Roy Chiao, D.R. Nanayakkara, and, for some reason, Dan Aykroyd as Art Weber; directed by Steven Spielberg. Looking for more WHM-related content?
