You know the scene. A grisly human sacrifice. A terrified archaeologist looking on in horror from the shadows. A poor religious fanatic has his still-beating heart torn from his chest by a high priest before bursting into flames. While this seems like the kind of scene that would have been perfectly at home in a John Carpenter movie in the 1980s, instead it comes from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the second entry in the franchise (albeit a prequel to 1980's Raiders of the Lost Ark), and one which takes a decidedly darker tone than the relatively family-friendly adventure of the previous film. That moment is alleged to have given birth to the PG-13 movie rating, for one thing. But it also kickstarted a small but specific subset of pop culture fascination: the concept that someone's heart could be manually removed from their chest with no tools, using only the skills (sometimes mystical in nature) of an adversary. Fans of the Mortal Kombat franchise take note: long before Kano was rippin' hearts out, Mola Ram was doing it…and with better fashion sense, to boot! And while it SEEMS like the realm of pure (if icky) fantasy, it's still worth breaking down whether any element of this gruesome little party trick has basis in scientific reality. And if that doesn't quicken your pulse (sorry), we've got behind the scenes tidbits on what made it all look so good, how this singular moment helped force the MPAA to institute PG-13, and more! Now, time for a little heart-to-heart with Tamara and Hakeem…SUGGESTED VIEWINGWhile Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is indeed the second Indiana Jones movie, it's actually a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. That being said, we always endorse watching big franchises in release order rather than timeline order, because prequels tend to get a little self-referential. Watch Raiders first, then Temple of Doom, then the third film (which takes place after Raiders), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. These are the only Indiana Jones movies!OK, not really. There are also fourth and fifth films, the generally maligned Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the somewhat better Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (the only film in the franchise not directed by Stephen Spielberg). Your mileage may vary, but if nothing else, Raiders of the Lost Ark is generally considered one of the greatest action/adventure movies of all time! And for those of you who can sanction Jim Carrey's buffoonery (sorry, a little Tommy Lee Jones humor there), Hakeem recommends an alternate take on the heart-ripping concept, as seen in Dumb and Dumber.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Here are a few recommendations! Ancient Heart Extraction Rituals“You have to appease those gods, so what better way than with human sacrifice! Don't have a volcano handy? Take out their heart.”(Hakeem references a scientific paper about heart extraction in Mesoamerica. We generally try not to link to things that aren't readily and easily available to read, but in this case, the above abstract and this excerpt are the best we could do. But it's so cool, we couldn't pass it up.)Consciousness and Organ Function While Hakeem throws cold water (or hot flames) on the idea that the heart itself can continue beating with no additional equipment after separation from the body, he briefly references the extremely grisly speculation that guillotine victims remained conscious after their heads were separated from their bodies. There's further study on that, but we try not to think about it.See also: Neuromuscular JunctionThuggees“While the Thuggee cult that they drew from was a real thing, they were robbers, they did murder folks, and they did all of this to serve Kali and did it in the name of this particular god, they did not take part in human sacrifice.”The PG-13 Rating“At the time this movie came out, it was rated PG…and there were a lot of parents who were taking their kids to see this…and then there's this heart being ripped out of a chest, which terrified kids!”See also: The MPAA website that Tamara references which confirms the Temple of Doom connection can be found here.We also cannot recommend highly enough J.W. Rinzler's incredible The Complete Making of Indiana Jones: The Story Behind All Four Films.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Ever wonder what makes the DeLorean in Back to the Future go? So did we! linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema “The Indiana Jones Masterclass” continues at Catching Up On Cinema with Kyle and Trevor's review of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)! Once again directed by Steven Spielberg, scored by John Williams, and starring Harrison Ford as the iconic adventure hero, the film is technically a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), the first sequel in the franchise history, and the first film in the series to bear the “Indiana Jones” name in it's title. Conceived of and produced by George Lucas in the midst of an ugly divorce, the film is somewhat infamous for it's dark tone and imagery in spite of it's PG rating. Oft regarded as the lesser of the original trilogy of Indy films, Temple of Doom turned a handsome profit in it's original theatrical release, but is sadly regarded by it's director as a bit of a misstep in his career, with the one indisputable positive coming out of the production being him meeting his future wife on the set. In addition to Ford's Indy, the cast also consists of the likes of Kate Capshaw (Spielberg's aforementioned future wife) as the pampered and obnoxious club singer, Willie Scott, Ke Huy Quan as Indy's invaluable little buddy, Short Round. Additionally, our cast of villains is rounded out by Roshan Seth as the less than threatening Chattar Lal and Amrish Puri as the formidable cult leader, Mola Ram. Somewhat of a tonal mess of a film, Temple of Doom is nevertheless a very worthy and radically different sequel from Raiders, boasting some of the most impressively lit and constructed sets in the franchise, and an utterly relentless third act that sees the film tossing it's script out the window in favor of pure, unfiltered, roller coaster action. A lesser Indiana Jones film, but still better than many franchises' best. This week we’re celebrating our 100th episode with an adventure to India. Lucky for us, our good buddy Indiana Jones is going to be our guide to The Temple of Doom! This is the second movie from the franchise that inspired a whole generation of archeologists. Indy teams up with his sidekick, Short Round, and a beautiful lounge singer named Willie Scott to find and return a magical stone to a small village in India. Along the way, they must stomach a bunch of weird food, survive deadly boobytraps, keep from lierally getting their hearts ripped out and hang on to avoid becoming crocodile food. This is a great movie and part of one of the greatest movie franchises of all time. Obviously we recommend it with the highest of praises. Why does everyone they meet speak fluent english? Why did Indy really let Willie “tag along”? What is the temperature in those catacombs? Who designed Mola Ram’s escape hatch? What were the British troops doing while Indy and the gang were in The Temple of Doom? Thank you for listening to our little show for the first 100 episodes and hopefully we’ll still be talking about movies until episode 1,000. Please rate and review the podcast wherever you get it and if you like the show, share it with your friends. Also, please register at Spreaker.com and follow The Jester Radio Network for all of our amazing shows and content. Have a great week.

Today we return to the magical land of Indiana Jones, as we dive into our least favorite of the Indy trilogy (no, we do not count Kingdom of the Crystal Skullz) The Temple of Doom! Released in 1984, is actually a prequel to Raiders, and although we kind of hate it, we do admit that it is ACTION PACKED. It's filled with nail biting 'how will they get out of this scenarios', elaborate set pieces, and the charming comic relief of Short Round. We'll talk about why we think it's commonly know as the least favorite of the Indy films, how Willie Scott single-handedly set the women's movement back by about 100 years, and Sweety tells a moving story about accidentally watching Lion without subtitles. So join us, and our bud Mola Ram as we venture into the Temple err....... cave-like structure thing of Doom!  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon. In the Hub, we play a game of Would You Rather. In case you are not familiar with this game, Would You Rather is a conversation or party game that poses a dilemma in the form of a question beginning with "would you rather".  We will be taking a Disney approach to this and we invite y’all to play at home with us. Let us know what choice you would have made and why. Send it in to magicourway@gmail.com. Listen to this show and find out how we came up with Mola Ram’s Heartburn Café or Sala’s Café. Our creativity goes wild as Danny comes up with the Marcus Brody Restaurant, a place where you get lost on your own restaurant. #cricketlivesmatter For Would You Rather, check out the following dilemmas. Would You Rather (heretofore known as WYR) marry Ursula or the old lady from Snow White? WYR have Pinocchio’s nose or Dumbo’s ears? WYR take on Aladdin’s Genie for Jasmine’s affections or take on the Hulk for Black Widow’s affections? WYR have Huey, Dewey, and Louie as your kids or Ursula and Maleficent as your adoptive parents? WYR have a weekend in Tokyo Disneyland or a week in one of the U.S.A. Disney Parks? Over the span of a day, WYR have Guano Joe as your personal tour guide at the Animal Kingdom or spend a day with Stacey J. Aswad at the Magic Kingdom? Over the span of a day, would you rather have Thor’s hammer or Captain America’s shield? WYR have Fixit Felix Jr.’s hammer or the Magic Carpet from Aladdin? WYR streak the old lobby or the new lobby of the Polynesian Village Resort? WYR go without sex for a whole year or not go to a Disney park for five years?   And, there are many more dilemmas to discuss. This show is for the long haul and is guaranteed to bring a lot of entertainment to your life.    As always, we promise to give the Disney fan a voice and this show is no exception! If you have any thoughts, please send them over. If you want to make a custom show intro and want to be forever immortalized on MOW, send that in too.  For more show notes and links to the topics we discussed in the show, please visit our website, www.magicourway.com, and enjoy looking at the pictures and reading the articles discussed in the show. Everyone's seen 'Temple of Doom,' right? Well, Krissy hadn't. So we watched it annnnd talked about it a whole bunch. Discussion includes Justin saying "like" a whole lot (he blames stupidity/cold medicine), what really happened with Krissy & her hatred of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' which 2 characters will forever be known as Blanket Jackson & Tater Tots, what to do (or not do) when served monkey brains for dessert, the dangers of getting a beer with Mola Ram, the stupidity of a bulimic army & much more. Rated PG-13 because we also talk about child slavery & hearts being torn from people's chest cavities. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
