The Top 100 Project

While not a classic, Mogambo has a lot going for it. They took the production to several countries in Africa to get authentic scenery for this passionate love story. Big stars like Clark Gable, Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly do the love triangle thing and John Ford (who had just won his 4th Oscar) is their director. And what these legends of cinema made 70+ years ago is fine. It's just far from marvelous. Gable alternates his romantic interest between Gardner & Kelly, which isn't logical. Anyway, Ryan is on his own again in this 571st episode of Have You Ever Seen, so journey to various parts of Africa---when you're not shooting in front of projection screens in the comfort of a studio, that is---as Mogambo gets a reviewin'. Programming note: All The King's Men will not be the episode on March 22nd. What WILL be discussed is still being considered. “Mogambo” 1953 is a romance-adventure film set in Africa. Thank you to Patreon listener Arthur who recommended we include the movie in a podcast. Director John Ford built the film around African locations and music from African tribes. The film has many elements found in the 1932 movie “Red Dust”.Clark Gable is Victor Marswell the experienced guide who leads the safari to ultimately observe Gorillas in their natural setting. The safari group includes Grace Kelly as Linda Nordley who falls in love with Marswell, Donald Nordley the husband of Linda played by Donald Sinden, Ava Gardner as Eloise Kelly who also loves Marswell, and a large supporting cast. Mr. Gable also played the lead in the “Red Dust” film. Enjoy this adventure drawn from an earlier time.

[ For full episode catalogue please subscribe to our Patreon at Patreon.com/BestActress ] The year is 1954 and the nominees are: 1. Audrey Hepburn - Roman Holiday  2. Leslie Caron - Lili 3. Ava Gardner - Mogambo 4. Deborah Kerr - From Here to Eternity  5. Maggie McNamara - The Moon is Blue - In 1954 Audrey Hepburn won the Oscar for Best Actress playing a princess going from ‘riches to rags for a day' in the classic film, Roman Holiday. I've always wondered why she won the Oscar for this film and not for something like Breakfast at Tiffany's or The Nun's Story. Now having seen the other nominated performances, I get it. I wouldn't say this was a weak year necessarily but I would say there were some odd choice of nominees. Deborah Kerr was incredible in From Here to Eternity but I don't think we saw enough of her to warrant a win. Leslie Caron gets so many brownie points for having to sell those scene with those creepy ass puppets in Lili. Ava Gardner in Mogambo is the most confusing nominee in this category, as we discuss at length this episode. Who do you think should have won? Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Cathryn Naiker as they discuss.

The Mau Mau Rebellion of 1952 saw the Kenyan Land and Freedom Army (KLFA) take up arms against the British Empire's occupation of their land. The struggle for decolonisation was bloody and protracted, with many of the KLFA ending up tortured by British soldiers in cruel labor camps. A film crew from Pathé arrived from London to film staged propaganda newsreels on Kenyan streets, depicting the Mau Mau as terrorists and white civillians as the real victims.  Enter Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra. In the midst of this uprising, they land in Nairobi with an entourage of 600 and under heavy armed guard. They are issued a weapon each. Ava is there to make a film, Mogambo. MGM's publicity for the film refers to the African continent as "the white man's graveyard." Sinatra, at a low point in his career, is just tagging along for the ride. He spends most of the trip distracted, anxiously reading his copy of James Jones' novel, From Here to Eternity, over and over.  FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953) - a boring film based on a bad novel. Mogambo knit together a heady, hypnotic sound from the many enigmatic strands of Asia's musical cultures: the deep traditional instrumentations of Siam and India, the high-tech edge of modern Bangkok and the rich Goan bloodline of trance. The results are both otherworldly, yet instantly comprehensible. And now the duo, consisting of producer Sunju Hargun and multi-instrumentalist Jerom Doudet, return with the latest missive from their own aptly-titled Siamese Twins Records: Urvi (उव). The much- anticipated follow-up to their sought-after debut 12” Cobra (कोबरा) is a multi-layered sound bath, as versatile as it is visceral. Urvi ranges from meditative sonic explorations to fearless entrancing rhythms and basslines, tangled together from the mysterious East. The opening track of the release and our premiere for today, "Durga (दुर्गा)," sounds like a start of the journey full of uncertainty but armed with the hope that something good will come out of it. Its positivity sets a good vibe for the rest of the release, which later gets more energetic with "Urvi," "Chakkar," and "Piya" and explores the depths of trance mysticism. A steady stream of cross-border collaborations has come to define the region's underground nightlife, with Bangkok-based Sunju Hargun at the forefront of many of these exchanges. Over the years, he's honed a signature sound of minimal techno, tribal rhythms and deep downtempo while playing in Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam. Inspired by the traditional music of these countries, his DJ sets and productions are lush tonal sound baths, with plenty of nature references. Shimmering ambient evokes misty mountain tops while whiffs of Goa trance nod to beach sunrises. His current project, Siamese Twins Records, is also rooted in pan-Asian connections. A platform to explore old-world chants and ceremonial percussion, the label hosts much of Hargun's own work, including Bollywood-inspired acid made as Mogambo, a production outfit he runs with Jerom Doudet. All these myriad styles are present on Hargun's RA Podcast, an hour-long trip where flickering synths reverberate like gongs before morphing into an amorphous mass of dub techno, jungle noises and meandering modular sequences. The real story here is how well can Tim and Matt resist doing the Toto bit. One of them fares better than the other. Also they discuss The African Queen, its precipitous fall between AFI lists, grungy Bogart, screen chemistry, and Africa. Tim then presents two films with African settings that are vital to the primary romance plot, John Ford's Mogambo and Anthony Minghella's The English Patient. Talk of orientalism, megafauna, The Scramble for Africa, world war geopolitics, and, of course, maps ensues.

A conversation with Rishabha Nayyar with Jasravee Kaur Chandra in this new episode of Jagged with Jasravee addresses some key questions like What are the current stereotypes of men in advertising and popular culture? How to un-stereotype men and develop a progressive narrative for men? Why do we make men appear as villain, whenever we make woman a hero ? Why can't a brand redefine how a man ought to be ? Why can't men potrayal be real and authentic in popular culture? Rishabha argues than 'bashing men' has become a formula for every FMCG brand trying to woo the women. Create the man to be a villain. A good for nothing, unreasonable and demanding character who would probably even put the Bollywood villains to shame. He comes across as Mogambo of movie ‘Mr India'. Rishabha analyses advertising and cinema in our country over the last 10 years and comes up with typical stereotypes of men in popular culture Macho Man : Very brave, risk-taking and adventurous. Boys envy him and girls adore him. Fear or vulnerability are not word that exist in his dictionary Insensitive Man: Believes that while the Mughals have left the country, he is still their descendant and should therefore be treated like royalty. Will sit and do nothing. For him everyone is a servant Provider : He is the male version of ‘Mother India' in the context of doing things for others. He lives to only fulfil the dreams of everyone other than himself. He gets great joy in never doing something that makes him happy Rishabha asks the fundamental question- Why does a man need to be the ‘Chief wage Earner'? Why can't he be one of the wage earners. Why put so much pressure on him. He believes that the man of tomorrow wants to do things for the family but also fulfil his own dreams and desires. He wants to be a co-parent and not the absent parent. An interesting case in point is the SBI Life ad wherein the husband quits his job and lives his dream of doing a stand-up comedy Rishabha argues that the problem with continuing to put out the traditional masculine stereotypes is two-fold. One we are being as unfair to men, like we we were to women, in the past. If un-stereotype women is a movement, then we should start a similar movement for men. Secondly, we are slowing down the pace of change for men in the society as the role models that we are putting out are regressive, dated and stereo-typical. Rishaba thinks that what is missing when it comes to the narrative on men is authenticity. Neither is the guy in the ‘Share the Load' ad real nor is the ‘Complete Man'. Why does the take on men have to be so black and white? As with all things in life, men too have their greys. Why can't brands project them like that? The problem with the extreme projections that we currently have is that they are devoid of reality and as a result do not set the right expectations. He rounds it by discussing issues like should men themselves stop shying away from the reality and openly express their vulnerability / and raise a voice against incorrect portrayal . #whatmenwant #consumertrends #thecompleteman be real and authentic ? Jagged with Jasravee is facilitated by Jasravee Kaur Chandra, Director- Brand Building, Research & Innovation at Master Sun, Consulting Brand of Adiva L Pvt. Ltd.

Director John Ford hadn't seen the film Red Dust when he agreed to direct its 1953 remake Mogambo but was intrigued by the challenge of bringing his skills with filming the wide open spaces of the American West to the African serengeti.  For his male lead he chose Clark Gable, in desperate need of a hit in his middle age. Ava Gardner, who brought along contentious boyfriend Frank Sinatra to the African location shoot, and Grace Kelly, rumored to have started a torrid affair with Gable, played the love interests.   Besides discussing the steamy and wild Mogambo and some of the backstage tensions that informed it, our Hot Date hosts catch us up on their recently seen. Vicky gives her thoughts on The Seven Samurai, Manchester by the Sea, Collateral Beauty, the doc Harmontown and her new blu-ray of A Hard Day's Night. Dan talks about George Romero's Martin, Cold in July, Prometheus, and 1971's Kiss of the Tarantula.  Their chat also leads them to the passing of Carrie Fisher and George Michael and the music and world events of October 1953.  A three way with Clark Gable, Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly in the African jungle! 1953's Mogambo is on Hot Date.  Leave us some feedback.

His archived articles can be found on the blog website above Junior Mogambo Ranger (JMR) Doug maintains. Here's Richard's bio: Richard Daughty (Mogambo Guru) is general partner and COO for Smith Consultant Group, serving the financial and medical communities, and the writer/publisher of the Mogambo Guru economic newsletter, an avocational exercise to better heap disrespect on those who desperately deserve it. The Mogambo Guru is quoted frequently in Barron's, The Daily Reckoning, and other fine publications.Mogambo's most recent piece was published a few days ago here on Lew Rockwell's website:https://www.lewrockwell.com/2015/06/r...Topics discussed on the show:* Is Mogambo Guru surprised TPTB have managed to kick the can down the road since 2008 without another major collapse?*Greece's Default and whether they are an intentional sacrificial lamb like Lehman Brothers was?*Political Corruption at all levels of government in the US*Gold and Silver Market Manipulation* TPP or Trans-Pacific Partnership and what's hidden in the agreement? *Jason's (unfortunate) dating and social life in DC are also discussed and Jason cited the mini documentary about how bad dating is in DC http://www.dated-series.com/. Eric and Richard both suggest Jason should move away ASAP. Stories and Nominees for Scumbag of the Week:http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles...http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/30/politic...

Hey Hey Hey!!!
