Episode 7: Hera PheriRelease date: 2000In this week's episode, we go back two decades in time to discuss one of Bollywood's top comedy films ‘Hera Pheri'. This movie is a remake of the 1989 Malayalam film Ramji Rao Speaking which was inspired by the 1971 film See the Man Run. The cast had Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar, Suneil Shetty, Tabu, Om Puri, Mukesh Khanna, Khulbhushan Kharbanda, and Gulshan Grover. The film was directed by Priyadarshan who is a renowned filmmaker in Malayalam, Tamil, and Hindi film industries. Hera Pheri had an average run at its theatre release but went on to garner a cult following when it was released on cable TV channels later. Paresh Rawal's character ‘Baburao Ganpat Apte' became an iconic character in the history of Bollywood and had the best lines in the movie laced with sarcasm and humor. He had a clean sweep in awards show that year capturing the best comic actor awards at Filmfare, Screen, and IIFA awards. Here Pheri dialogues have also given birth to some of the most popular memes on social media. Minal watched it a year after its release on TV while Benny watched it only recently for this episode and they both had quite a few thoughts about whether the movie retains its comic charm even after two decades. Tune in to the episode to find out. Synopsis:Raju (Akshay Kumar) and Shyam (Suneil Shetty) are 2 unemployed young men in debt and renting a room in the house of Baburao Ganpat Apte (Paresh Rawal). Baburao owns Star Garage but is also in severe debt with his creditors. A wrong number to his garage's landline results in the 3 getting involved in a kidnapping plot to make some quick bucks. The chaos that ensues forms the second half of the film.IMDB Link: Hera PheriWhere to Watch: YouTubeFunny Scenes:Every Phone Call of BaburaoHelmet SceneTrivia: https://www.newsbytesapp.com/news/entertainment/hera-pheri-completes-21-years-fun-facts/storyMusic from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/hey-pluto/the-paradeLicense code: MIE1N7HAVI6KJOSGContact Us:Email: thetalkingtalkies@gmail.com Twitter: @_talkingtalkiesInstagram @_talkingtalkiesBenny (@RealBennyMan) / Twitter

Shehzada is the Hindi remake of the Allu Arjun-starrer Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (AVPL). It stars Kartik Aryan, that's what you'll remember by the end the movie, anyway. If one were to look for the silver lining (the performances aside), the film is everything a mass entertainer is - if you're completely willing to leave logic at home. But how much does that really count for? Personally? Not much. Tune in for my full review!

Episode 1854: With 2170267 views on Monday, 30 May 2022 our article of the day is Paresh Rawal.
Rishi Kapoor's swansong Sharmaji Namkeen serves a perfect tribute to his tough yet jovial person. Directed by Hitesh Bhatia, this is the first time in Bollywood we see two actors - Kapoor and Paresh Rawal - play one character on-screen. Sharmaji Namkeen doesn't have any over-the-top dialogues or a lessons in morality that hits you hard. It's a sweet and innocent slice of life tale told in a simple manner. Sharmaji Namkeen narrates the story of a retired manager of Madhuban Appliances, Brij Gopal Sharma (Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal) who needs to be on the go and just can't sit idle at home. While he contemplates taking up zumba classes, becoming a property agent, giving tuitions or opening a chaat papdi stall, his sons Rinku (Suhail Nayyar) and Vincy (Taaruk Raina) don't really buy into his ideas and tell him to enjoy his post-retirement life. As Sharmaji takes his hobby and passion for cooking to the next level, he is tricked by his friend Chaddha (Satish Kaushik) into cooking at a ladies' kitty party, and soon, it becomes a regular affair. In the process, his circle of friends sees quite a change. In Veena (Juhi Chawla), he finds a friend and a confidante. But what happens when Sharmaji's sons, neighbours and relatives get to know about his secret job? The film is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Ranbir Kapoor is candid in this conversation with Sneha Menon Desai about his father Rishi Kapoor's last film Sharmaji Namkeen, finally wrapping Brahmāstra and the status on his much-talked about wedding with Alia Bhatt. Watch the actor along with Ritesh Sidhwani and Hitesh Bhatia relive their memories of Rishi Kapoor, his passion for food and drinks and how Paresh Rawal filled in his shoes.
Is Sharmaji Namkeen—Rishi Kapoor's final film, out now on Amazon Prime Video—a noble failure or an unlikely success? We discuss the movie's unconventional production, which was marred by the tragedy of Kapoor's death; the differences between the two central performances by Kapoor and Paresh Rawal; and whether the film manages to balance its broad humour with genuine moments of drama. — Hosted by Akhil Arora and Rohan Naahar, The Long Take is fully bootstrapped. OUR intrepid Bird Eye Reviewer, Nat, has been flying high this month and looking around to see what attracts her beady eye and she has settled on and gets her beaky claws into Roots – all these are connected to this, in episode 19. ‘Hum Do, Hamare Do' – (‘Us Two, Our Two'), a film starring Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Sanon, Paresh Rawal and Rana Pathak Shah. You can find this film on Disney + Hotstar. It's about the Rao character prepping to get married to Sanon in the film but he's an orphan and worries how this will look, so enlists Rawal and Shah to help out. Does it work? ‘Tryst with Destiny' is a series of four short interconnected films – a trio screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2020 and one has been added to that – See what our Nat makes of these currently available on Sony Liv. All are interconnected by the idea of Roots! Last but certainly not least and something a little different is Amit Trivedi's new (branded) music series. Brought to us by Skoda ( don't forget this, Nat won't – she mentions it at least five times! And nothing in it, as far we, the Mother Bird, know…) So there on its own merits…and courtesy of the Nat Bird filming skills…Trivedi travels around India and homes in on musical traditions and genres in certain states and produces a music video while subtly promoting the car brand. Looks great and sounds lovely too – individual music videos are available on Youtube as is the music on various streaming platforms but the actual series – released in parts – is only currently available on - India digital platform only – Voot. What a week it has been at the movies! Anupama Chopra & Anmol Jamwal have a lot to discuss, listen to this for their personal views on the movies, web shows & the sudden demise of Kannada superstar Puneeth Rajkumar.
“Hum do hamare do” generally refers to a couple and their two kids, who help complete a family. However, in the movie Hum Do Hamare Do, the hero is in dire need of parents to have a happily ever after. Dhruv (Rajkummar Rao) is a self-made man. It's this need to conjure up a family that then becomes the raison d'etre for everyone involved and we have no option but trudge along. There is nothing in Hum Do Hamare Do we haven't seen or expected. In fact, even the actors have played similar roles in the past. No wonder Rajkummar sleeps-walks through the film. There isn't a single stand-out moment for him. But Ratna Pathak shah and Paresh Rawal bring in so much credible potency to their roles that one can't help but be invested despite the fact that they have precious little to work with.

Episode 92 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast features 1992’s DAULAT KI JUNG. Our guest this week was Her Highness Pitu Sultan and this was her one and only choice for you, her adoring public. Loosely based on the Hollywood film MCKENNA’S GOLD, this movie is several things, none of them good: it is a college romance, an elopement story starring the greatest elopers of their generation, a Romeo and Juliet story, a treasure hunt, an anthropological exercise, and an investigation of the uneasy nexus between crime branch officers and vampires. Starring Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla, Kiran Kumar, Shafi Inamdar, Tiku Talsania, Dilip Tahil, Paresh Rawal and KADER KHAN (with guest star, Coffin Donkey), Daulat ki Jung is a trip back in the time machine to a very different Bollywood. A remake of 1995 Govinda and Karisma Kapoor starrer by the same name, Coolie No. 1 is directed by David Dhawan who also directed the original. Starring Varun Dhawan (as Raju Coolie and Kuwar Raj Pratap Singh) and Sara Ali Khan (Sarah Rozzario) in lead roles, the film is old wine in new bottle with both Varun and Sara adding their own tadka, but it doesn't taste anything like the original. Not to say that original was a cult in any way but for that era, it kind of worked with Govinda's effortless comic timing and wit. Switch to 2020, I'm sorry but such blatant frame-to-frame remakes aren't going to work. It's way too over-the-top for today's audiences and proves that not everything can be recycled. Even the music that has been remixed, it would have been best left untouched. The supporting cast includes Paresh Rawal (Jeffery Rozzario), Jaaved Jaffery (Pandit Jai Kishen), Shikha Talsania (Anjali Rozzario), Sahil Vaid (Deepak) and Rajpal Yadav (Pinto) and other than Rawal, no one brings anything new to the table that's worth mentioning. While Rumi Jaffery's screenplay has no head and tail that's evident from highly misplaced songs and abrupt action sequences that come in out of the blue, it's Farhad Samji's utterly ridiculous and mindless dialogues that are a put-off. If anything is good, it's perhaps the fact that Coolie No.1 doesn't have anything vulgar, no cuss words, no double meaning jokes, so it can be well enjoyed with your family. But mind you, don't put any logic into it because they didn't. The film is now streaming on Amazon Prime Videos.

“Can anyone douse the fire of truth?” We make a return to the world of Bollywood action cinema to review BAAZI (1995), a film that could, most politely be described as, being ‘inspired’ by Die Hard. Not to mention borrowing scenes from half-a-dozen other action films. Our guest on this show is Asim Burney from the Khandaan podcast. We try and pin down just how many films Baazi ripped off, the career of its star Aamir Khan, and an exploding helicopter that may be one of the most embarrassing ever committed to film. Show notes Baazi (1995) Director: Ashutosh Gowariker Cast: Aamir Khan, Mamta Kulkarni, Paresh Rawal Plot: A tough police officer wages a one-man war against terrorists and a corrupt politician who have planned to assassinate a top government official. We promised we wouldn't stay away from Bollywood for very long, and after last episode's minimalist experimental ghost story we go for something a lot more crowd pleasing. It's also our most modern, being released in 2000. Aren't we cheating though? Was that released long ago enough to consider it a classic? Well, seeing as it's a cult film with an 8.0 rating on imdb and was voted funniest film of all time by the Indian Express, we're going to say: yes. So join us as we navigate our way through the spiritual sequel to Gol Maal. Along the way, we'll see Seinfeld-style phone book hijinks, arguments about who gets what job because their dad died first, people eating paper to escape contracts and an actual kidnapping. We also tackle all of the most important questions, such as: "Who was Smytta's childhood Baburao?" "What the hell was the deal with that item number?" and most importantly, "as much as we love Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Tabu, which is Paresh Rawal not on the poster despite being the funniest thing here"? If that doesn't sound like too much, strap yourself in for some bullet-train speed Bollywood chaos.

In Episode 15 of the Khandaan Podcast, we switch up our format for a special series: over the next few episodes, we will discuss movies nominated by our audience as their all-time favorites. We begin with 1992’s Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. Starring Aamir Khan, this was the second film made by cousins Aamir and Mansoor Khan, co-starring Ayesha Jhulka, Dipak Tijori, Pooja Bedi, and the always reliable Khulbhushan Kharbanda among others. We are joined this week by The Guardian’s [Mike McCahill](https://twitter.com/mike_mccahill), who was watching this movie for the very first time whereas Asim, Sujoy and Amrita grew up with this film and its soundtrack as a constant in their younger lives. This movie is also rich in Bollywood trivia, some of which might be found [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROlOyNMsm0U) in the reunion staged by Anupama Chopra and Rajeev Masand (yes, this is the same video that almost drove Amrita mad.) We also discuss the brand-new release Sanju, the whitewash special directed by Raju Hirani starring an eerily excellent Ranbir Kapoor, who rebounds in style from a couple of years of less-than-successful films. Co-starring Sonam Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Karishma Tanna, Anushka Sharma, and Dia Mirza, this movie should have been a knockout but sadly isn’t. Lastly, we look at Sacred Games, the first Indian original commissioned by Netflix. Starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead, ably supported by a large cast of pitch perfect actors (including Kubra Sait, Radhika Apte, Neeraj Kabi, Jitendra Joshi and others), it’s based on the Vikram Chandra novel and adapted to screen by Varun Grover, Smita Singh (not Bansal as Amrita says in the podcast, sorry), and Vasant Nath. Co-directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap, this series sparked quite a bit of conversation. Subscribers are reminded that Khandaan is currently accepting nominations for our special run. Please send your suggestions for movies of the Khans that you feel we must watch to [upodcasting@gmail.com](upodcasting@gmail.com). Note: The Khandaan podcast is an interactive experience! For episode 16, we have Shah Rukh Khan’s early era.
Welcome to Episode 10 of the Khandaan Podcast, where we come at last to the one movie we’ve constantly been quoting – 1994’s Andaz Apna Apna. Starring the rare movie combination of Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, this Khantastic film was a big flop when it came out but has attained cult status since then as seen in our poll where it beat out the most commercially successful film of 1994, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun…? Costarring Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, and Paresh Rawal in key roles, this Rajkumar Santoshi film offers a veritable who’s who of character actors who elevate the sketches that make this movie a classic. If you can make it past [Asim](http://www.twitter.com/asimburney), [Sujoy](https://twitter.com/9e3k) and [Amrita](https://twitter.com/Amritaiq) crying with laughter as they struggle to describe what they liked about this film, you might find old memories awakened. However, is this a movie we can recommend to newbies and non-native speakers? Join us as we discuss weighty issues such as effectively translating comedy, self-referential comedy in Bollywood, Aamir Khan’s undercooked comedic chops, and whether we had the same tastes as children as we do now. Note: The Khandaan podcast is an interactive experience! Please click [here](https://www.opinionstage.com/polls/2498940) to vote for the next movie you think we should feature. Some good soul has said that Having a good conversation is one of the great joys of being human And if it is coupled with the sustained charm, wit and energy of Gul Panag, you are in for a treat. A big shout out to Gul who did an encore of sorts by firing away on topics ranging from the controversial Padma Shree awards to the relevance of National awards in todays context. For a self confessed cricket un-fan, Gul was pretty vocal about the non selection of the Pakistani players in the IPL. And we also got some first hand dope on her forthcoming release, Rann. Gul enriches an enviable ensemble cast which include the likes of Paresh Rawal and Amitabh Bachchan. The movie releases today. Check it our over the weekend!
