Sometimes in science, when you try to answer one question it sparks even more questions. The CrowdScience inbox is a bulging example of that. We get tons of new questions every week and many of those are following up on episodes we've made. Sometimes you want us to go deeper into part of the answer, or sometimes a subject intrigues you so much that it inspires further questions about it. In this episode presenter Caroline Steel is on a mission to answer some of those questions. The CrowdScience episode How do fish survive in the deep ocean? led listener Ivor to wonder what sort of vision deep sea fish might have. On hand to answer that is Professor Lars Schmitz, Kravis Professor of Integrated Sciences: Biology, at Claremont McKenna College in the USA Sticking with vision, we also tackle a question inspired by the CrowdScience episode Do we all see the same colour? For years listener Catarina has wondered why her eyes appear to change colour. Professor Pirro Hysi, ophthalmologist at the University of Pittsburgh, sheds some light on that subject. In India, Rakesh listened to the CrowdScience episode Will the Earth ever lose its moon? and wondered about Jupiter's many moons. The European Space Agency's Ines Belgacem is working on a new mission to study Jupiter's moons. She explains which of the giant planet's ninety seven moons are ones for Rakesh to watch. We also hear how the episode Why can't my dog live as long as me? caught the attention of listener Lisa... and her cat. She had us falling in love with the long history of falling cats and the scientists who study them. Caroline is joined by Professor Greg Gbur, physicist at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte in the USA and author of Falling Felines and Fundamental Physics. Could this episode of follow up questions lead to an episode investigating the follow up questions to these follow up questions? In episode three, we chat with Rashmi Devadasan, Rakesh Khanna, and R.T. Samuel, the brilliant minds behind The Blaft Book of Anti-Caste SF, which has been making waves in the Indian speculative fiction scene. Rashmi Devadasan is a writer with over twenty-five years of experience in indie publishing, Tamil feature films, and Indian English theatre. At Blaft, she has been part of the selection, editing, design and production of the company's fiction in translation, comic book anthologies, original fiction, and zines. She is the author of Kumari Loves a Monster, a picture book created with the artist Shyam. Her short stories were part of an anthology titled Strange Worlds! Strange Times! Amazing Sci-Fi Stories, published by Speaking Tiger. She is a fan of fungi, moss, lichen, cephalopods, and jellyfish. Rashmi also draws gentle, mostly cuboidal-shaped sample collector robots that do research on a cacti-covered asteroid. You can find Rashmi Devadasan on Instagram @kaimaurundai. Rakesh Khanna grew up in Berkeley, California, of mixed Punjabi and Anglo-American heritage. He co-founded Blaft Publications in Chennai with Rashmi Ruth Devadasan, who is also his wife, in 2008. The company publishes translations of Indian fiction, folklore, weird fiction, and graphic novels. Rakesh is the co-author of Ghosts, Monsters, and Demons of India, the editor of Blaft's Tamil Pulp Fiction and Gujarati Pulp Fiction anthologies, and co-editor of The Blaft Book of Anti-Caste SF. Sometimes he edits mathematics textbooks. He is interested in marine invertebrates, demonology, topological graph theory, and banging on things to see what they sound like. You can find Rakesh Khanna on Instagram @blaftpublications. R.T. Samuel is an editor and independent cultural producer working between London and New Delhi. R is the co-editor of the collection, The Blaft Book of Anti-Caste SF, helmed by a viral fundraiser that made it the second-most successful Indian publishing campaign in Kickstarter history. The book involved working with nearly 30 authors, translators and artists for close to two years, and features stories from more than six different languages and diverse mediums. From 2021-23, R was also the writer and broadcaster behind the hugely popular (20k plays and counting) underground political and cultural education podcast Clear Blue Skies S1. A lapsed investigative and culture journalist, R is currently pursuing an MSc in Anthropology and Professional Practice at University College London and is always happy to talk about 80s SFF, public radio, futures literacy and Indian hip-hop. You can find R.T. Samuel on Instagram @mithran.rt. In this episode, we discuss the lack of understanding around caste, what's missing from the Indian SFF scene, the challenges and thrills of putting together an expansive anthology, the importance of translated fiction, Enid Blyton's undeniable influence, and more. In this Hindu-dominated nation, laws are often stacked against Christians and believers can pay a price for following Christ and sharing the Good News with others.Despite this opposition, host Michael Woolworth and his guest, Bobby (last name withheld for security purposes) affirm that the Gospel is spreading in India. And God is using Bible League programs, such as Church Planter Training, to equip pastors like Rakesh to face these challenges with courage and wisdom, and to grow their churches to His glory and honor. Rakesh Kilaru is a partner at Wilkinson Stekloff, a litigation boutique. In this episode we discuss these frame-shifting principles:- Be a trial generalist, not a subject-matter silo. Position the firm (and yourself) as first resort for trials across domains, so calls keep coming even as subject areas cycle.- Choose environments that improve decisions. A fixed-fee model (no billables) removes distortions, encourages collaboration, and lets teams right-size effort to outcomes. - Working with other firms and against elite opponents creates a constant idea pipeline.- People + process first. Map the real stakeholders, build trust on both sides, and make sure everyone who needs a say is actually in the loop before deciding

Real-time Feature Generation at Lyft // MLOps Podcast #334 with Rakesh Kumar, Senior Staff Software Engineer at Lyft.Join the Community: https://go.mlops.community/YTJoinInGet the newsletter: https://go.mlops.community/YTNewsletter// AbstractThis session delves into real-time feature generation at Lyft. Real-time feature generation is critical for Lyft where accurate up-to-the-minute marketplace data is paramount for optimal operational efficiency. We will explore how the infrastructure handles the immense challenge of processing tens of millions of events per minute to generate features that truly reflect current marketplace conditions. Lyft has built this massive infrastructure over time, evolving from a humble start and a naive pipeline. Through lessons learned and iterative improvements, Lyft has made several trade-offs to achieve low-latency, real-time feature delivery. MLOps plays a critical role in managing the lifecycle of these real-time feature pipelines, including monitoring and deployment. We will discuss the practicalities of building and maintaining high-throughput, low-latency real-time feature generation systems that power Lyft's dynamic marketplace and business-critical products.// BioRakesh Kumar is a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Lyft, specializing in building and scaling Machine Learning platforms. Currently, more than 14 million Americans have a serious mental illness, such as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and schizophrenia, conditions that can be treated with antipsychotic medicines. Use of these medicines has increased 22%, increasing the risk for developing a debilitating chronic movement condition called tardive dyskinesia. Tardive dyskinesia can cause debilitating uncontrollable and repetitive movements that can make eating, drinking and walking difficult. While tardive dyskinesia can be treated, integrating new medicines into any existing treatment plan can be challenging. Sometimes regimens can become complex causing patients to feel overwhelmed and give up on treatment or go without treatment entirely. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new treatment formulation – one pill, taken once-daily – that could help the millions of Americans living with a serious mental illness whose antipsychotic medications may cause this condition. This new formulation of an established treatment can be integrated into existing mental health treatment plans. On tonight's show, Rakesh Jain, MD, MPH, Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Texas Tech University School of Medicine is joining me to discuss tardive dyskinesia, its impact on peoples' lives and the importance of this treatment formulation and Sherland Peterson is sharing her experience with TD, and how it has impacted her quality of life.
The prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD) is rising, with 1 in 37 people expected to receive a diagnosis according to Parkinson's UK. This increase is largely due to growing and ageing populations. In Africa, the relatively younger demographic leads to a lower prevalence, but the continent faces unique challenges in diagnosing and treating PD. Neurologists are scarce, and in South Africa, they are mostly limited to the private healthcare sector, leaving much of the population with insufficient access. Stigma tied to beliefs in witchcraft further isolates individuals with Parkinson's. Parkinson's ZA, a non-profit organisation, aims to improve lives impacted by Parkinson's disease. Founded by Rakesh Harribhai, inspired by his late mother's experience, the organisation has adapted an Indian model more suited to South Africa's healthcare context. Currently operating in Durban, Parkinson's ZA offers diverse activities and plans to expand to Cape Town and Johannesburg, beginning with a care home in Pretoria East. Harribhai said he witnessed how members were isolated, withdrawn, and hesitant and have since embraced activities like table tennis and group outings to the beach.

Climate change is already impacting many rural areas of India. Farmers in rural areas of India are facing rise in temperatures and changes in rainfall that negatively impacts production as well as monetary returns. There are many ways to adapt to the impacts of climate change. One way to assist farmers is the District Agro-met Units (DAMUs), a project of Indian Meteorological department. DAMUs provide free-of-cost weather advisory services, and crucial information related to sowing, use of fertilisers, harvesting and storing crops. Instead of expanding the DAMU, Government of India decided to shut them down. To understand the broader impacts of climate change on farmers, the role of DAMU's and why government decided to shut them down, we interviewed Rishika Pardikar an Indian environmental journalist and PhD scholar Rakesh Nannewar. Both Rishika and Rakesh have been extensively written about the role and importance of DAMU units.
