Conceived, Written and Produced by Irfan Based on the book Pillars of Parallel Cinema by O.P. Srivastava Introduction to Podcasts: Pillars of Parallel Cinema In a world where Artificial Intelligence increasingly shapes our films, where voices, faces, and mannerisms are becoming deeply fake, we invite you on a journey back to a time, when cinema was a mirror to real life. This was an era where stories, characters, and settings were grounded in realism and human sensibilities. We are talking about the golden phase of Hindi cinema, known as Parallel Cinema-a movement unparalleled in the history of Indian cinema. Spanning from 1969 to 1999, this period stands out as the most creative and realistic phase in Indian cinema history. It gave birth to immortal films like Bhumika, Akrosh, Paar, and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, to name a few. The Parallel Cinema movement also introduced us to visionary filmmakers such as Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, Goutam Ghose, and Sai Paranjape. Additionally, this era brought forth an array of brilliant actors including Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Deepti Naval, Farooq Sheikh, Amrish Puri, Sadhu Meher, Surekha Sikri, and Mohan Agashe. In our new series of podcasts, Pillars of Parallel Cinema, we will explore some groundbreaking films meticulously selected by banker-turned-filmmaker OP Srivastava for his book Pillars of Parallel Cinema. Join us on this exciting journey to rediscover the essence of cinema that was not just a reflection of society, but also a powerful medium of expression that connected deeply with human experiences and emotions. The Book Pillars of Parallel Cinema The book offers a retrospective of 50 landmark films that defined Hindi parallel cinema, covering the period from the late 1960s to themid-1990s. It explores the emergence of parallel cinema as an alternative to mainstream Bollywood, emphasizing films driven by creative vision rather than commercial motivations. Srivastava highlights the socio-political contexts these films were set in and how they resonated with the middle-class audience by reflecting their realities. The book includes background stories about how each film was made and delves into the significant role these films played in shaping the "new wave" of Indian cinema. Filmmakers like Shyam Benegal, who contributed to this movement, praised the book for its comprehensive approach to documenting this important era in Indian film history. It could be a valuable read if you're interested in the history of Indian parallel cinema and the filmmaking processes behind some of its most iconic films. Buy on Amazon

Film and television Though he enjoys writing, Salman Rushdie says that he would have become an actor if his writing career had not been successful. Even from early childhood, he dreamed of appearing in Hollywood movies (which he later realised in his frequent cameo appearances). Rushdie includes fictional television and movie characters in some of his writings. He had a cameo appearance in the film Bridget Jones's Diary based on the book of the same name, which is itself full of literary in-jokes. On 12 May 2006, Rushdie was a guest host on The Charlie Rose Show, where he interviewed Indo-Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta, whose 2005 film, Water, faced violent protests. He appears in the role of Helen Hunt's obstetrician-gynecologist in the film adaptation (Hunt's directorial debut) of Elinor Lipman's novel Then She Found Me. In September 2008, and again in March 2009, he appeared as a panellist on the HBO program Real Time with Bill Maher. Rushdie has said that he was approached for a cameo in Talladega Nights: "They had this idea, just one shot in which three very, very unlikely people were seen as NASCAR drivers. And I think they approached Julian Schnabel, Lou Reed, and me. We were all supposed to be wearing the uniforms and the helmet, walking in slow motion with the heat haze." In the end their schedules didn't allow for it. In 2009, Rushdie signed a petition in support of film director Roman Polanski, calling for his release after Polanski was arrested in Switzerland in relation to his 1977 charge for drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl. Rushdie collaborated on the screenplay for the cinematic adaptation of his novel Midnight's Children with director Deepa Mehta. The film was also called Midnight's Children. Seema Biswas, Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das, and Irrfan Khan participated in the film. Production began in September 2010; the film was released in 2012. Rushdie announced in June 2011 that he had written the first draft of a script for a new television series for the US cable network Showtime, a project on which he will also serve as an executive producer. The new series, to be called The Next People, will be, according to Rushdie, "a sort of paranoid science-fiction series, people disappearing and being replaced by other people." The idea of a television series was suggested by his US agents, said Rushdie, who felt that television would allow him more creative control than feature film. The Next People is being made by the British film production company Working Title, the firm behind such projects as Four Weddings and a Funeral and Shaun of the Dead. In 2017, Rushdie appeared as himself in Episode 3 of Season 9 of Curb Your Enthusiasm, sharing scenes with Larry David to offer advice on how Larry should deal with the fatwa that has been ordered against him. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salman_Rushdie

It's the second to last episode of our season on Asian American interracial cinema, and this week, we're talking about Jennifer Reeder's 2017 film "Signature Move," written by and starring Fawzia Mirza. It's about a Pakistani American lawyer, Zaynab, who falls for a Mexican American bookstore owner, Alma. As they get to know each other, they compare their respective soap operas, mangoes and mothers. After lots of stories this season about racial strife, it's nice to watch a fun rom-com, where the cultural differences are a means to connection. What a coincidence that when Zaynab picks up an unlikely wrestling hobby, that her romantic love interest's mother happens to be a former lucha libre star! Must be meant to be. Except, Zaynab has been keeping some secrets from her single mother, played by Shabana Azmi, who is obsessed with finding her daughter a husband. Often, Asian American films about interracial romance are also about intergenerational differences, and it becomes a choice between your parents or your true love. In "Signature Move," which is equally about the love between mothers and daughters, the mother's approval might be complicated but the relationship with the mother will never be sacrificed.

On October 3rd, 1978, a child called "Durga" was born. This wouldn't have been unusual except for one small fact: she was the first Indian child, and the second child in the world, to be born via IVF, or In Vitro Fertilisation, thanks to the amazing work of one Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhyay. However, fewer than three years later, this pioneering doctor had committed suicide.  Ek Doctor Ki Maut, a 1990 film by Tapan Sinha and featuring  Prankaj Kapoor, Shabana Azmi and a (very young) Irrfan Khan, switches the focus from IVF to a leprosy vaccine, but keeps many of details of Dr. Mukhopadhyay's life otherwise intact, including a bitter struggle against bureaucracy very similar to Akira Kurosawa's Ikiru. Whilst that might sound like a slog, the wonderfully observant script, magnificent leads and engrossing story make for something very special and almost unique in Indian cinema.  In this episode, we don't simply dig into the film itself, but also the story of Dr. Mukhopadhyay's life, and Smytta's experience of studying Science in India. It does get a bit heated, but this is a very emotive subject, and we're both cool now, honestly.  If you're on the lookout for your next Parallel Cinema gem, come and have a listen! Episode picture: Wikicommons picture of a stamp depicting Tapan Sinha, the film's director.  Next episode: Saaheb (yup, Bollywood time again).

Banter, Bollywood and Beyond

Surprise! After our interview last episode, we return within a week's notice with Mandi, Shyam Benegal's 1983 surprisingly funny and touching story about brothel life and its political entanglements in Hyderabad.  Look at the names on this film! Naseeruddin Shah! Smita Patil! Shabana Azmi! Om Puri! Saeed Jaffrey! This film is so bright it should be its own constellation.  This wonderfully anthropological film poses many questions. What is the exact extent of the relations between brothel life and political life in India? How do the people in brothels actually live? And can we ever get enough Naseeruddin Shah? So, come on in, have a look and a dance, and if you like what you see, have a listen! Next episode: Ek Doctor Ki Maut Image Source: By Satyen K.
