This week we have a look at the 1976 short ghost film The Signalman directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark. This is Episode #449! The Signalman is a short film which is part of the British supernatural anthology series A Ghost Story for Christmas. Written by Andrew Davies, produced by Rosemary Hill, and directed by the series' creator, Lawrence Gordon Clark, it is based on the ghost story "The Signal-Man" (1866) by Charles Dickens, and first aired on BBC1 on 22 December 1976, the earliest airdate in the series relative to Christmas. It stars Denholm Elliott as a lone signalman who is visited by a traveller (Bernard Lloyd). The signalman reveals that he is being haunted by a spectre which has appeared at the entrance of the tunnel next to his signal box, and these visions begin to likewise trouble the traveller in his sleep.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/castle-of-horror-podcast--4268760/support.
Send us a textRemember "Toy Soldiers" from 1991? The movie where terrorists take over a prep school with machine gun action and explosions galore. Did you also know that it was rated R? We didn't either. But we remember it was the guy who was a Hobbit, and it had the kid from "Stand By Me" who gets a leech stuck to his balls, and the kid from "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" & "Adventures in Babysitting". Throw in the great Louis Gossett Jr. and we are more than excited to go back to 1991 and see why we remember liking this movie.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
"The House That Dripped Blood" is a 1971 British anthology horror film directed by Peter Duffell and distributed by Amicus Productions. The film is a collection of four short stories, each concerning a series of inhabitants of the eponymous building. Denholm Elliott appears in the segment "Method for Murder," playing Charles Hillyer. He is joined by Joanna Dunham, who portrays Alice Hillyer, Charles' wife. Peter Cushing stars in the segment "Waxworks," portraying Philip Grayson. Joss Ackland (known for "Lethal Weapon 2," "Watership Down," and "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey," among over 100 other films) plays Neville Rogers, Grayson's friend. Wolfe Morris appears as the Waxworks Proprietor. Christopher Lee appears in the segment "Sweets to the Sweet," playing John Reid. He is joined by Nyree Dawn Porter (star of "The Forsyte Saga," who turned down the lead female role in "The Avengers") as Ann Norton, the tutor hired to care for Reid's daughter. Jon Pertwee features in the segment "The Cloak," portraying Paul Henderson. Ingrid Pitt plays Carla Lind, Henderson's co-star and love interest in the vampire film they're working on. All of the stories were written by Robert Bloch, best known as the writer of "Psycho." Bloch wrote hundreds of short stories and over 30 novels and was a protégé of H. P. Lovecraft. Amicus films are sometimes mistaken for the output of Hammer Films due to their similar visual style and use of some of the same actors. However, unlike the period gothic Hammer films, Amicus productions were usually set in the present day. In the Second World War, Denholm Elliott (famous to this podcast for his titular role as the Signalman in the BBC "Ghost Story for Christmas," podcast episode 21) joined the Royal Air Force, training as a wireless operator/air gunner in 1942. His aircraft was hit by flak and subsequently ditched in the North Sea. Elliott and four of his crewmen survived, and he spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft VIIIb, a prisoner-of-war camp. Later, Pertwee was attached to the top-secret Naval Intelligence Division, working alongside future James Bond author (and of course Big Chris Lee's cousin) Ian Fleming and reporting directly to Prime Minister Winston Churchill. In 1967, he was chosen by "Dad's Army" producer David Croft for the role of Captain Mainwaring, but Pertwee turned it down. In 1969, Pertwee asked his agent to apply for the role of Doctor Who and was surprised to find he was already on the shortlist. He was the second choice for the role; Ron Moody was the first but was unavailable. Jon Pertwee later claimed that "The House That Dripped Blood" was meant to be a comedy-horror film and was initially filmed in that way. However, during the production, "the producer came in, took one look at what we are doing, and went raving mad," insisting it be a horror film and not a comedy. This change meant a shift in tone, but the material already filmed remained, resulting in the film dipping in quality and edits to remove comedy elements from Pertwee's sequences. He also admitted that he intentionally based his character on his co-star and friend Christopher Lee. In a scene where Jon's character talks about favourite roles, he says that he prefers Bela Lugosi's Dracula rather than "the chap who plays him nowadays." Last time we analyzed Raiders of the Lost Ark, and in Part 2 we'll be covering the last two movies: Temple of Doom and Last Crusade. Starting with arguably the weakest link of the trilogy and the "black sheep" of the film series, and ending with what many consider to be the peak of the franchise, it'll make for an... illuminating (read that in your best Sean Connery accent) discussion. This duo, for better or worse (almost entirely better) helped define the original Indiana Jones story, which in turn influenced cinema in ways we cannot overstate. Indiana Jones: one of cinema's greatest characters. It's big talk from our Mick, who's in charge of this month's Flicking and has chosen her favourite (note: not the ‘best') of the trilogy. Yes, trilogy; you read that right and we'll be taking no further questions on this matter. 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, a high energy, tall tale of derring-do, ancient knights, a big ol' religious McGuffin and a father-son relationship in need of salvation, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford, Sean Connery and a chef's kiss Denholm Elliott. Dom and Q are on mic toni is behind the cam on this one but Jusdowntown has join the cast for this revisit from 40 years ago called trading places starring eddie murphy Trading Places is a 1983 American comedy film directed by John Landis, with a screenplay by Timothy Harris and Herschel Weingrod. Starring Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Denholm Elliott, and Jamie Lee Curtis, the film tells the story of an upper-class commodities broker (Aykroyd) and a poor street hustler (Murphy) whose lives cross when they are unwittingly made the subject of an elaborate bet to test how each man will perform when their life circumstances are swapped.Harris conceived the outline for Trading Places in the early 1980s after meeting two wealthy brothers who were engaged in an ongoing rivalry with each other. He and his writing partner Weingrod developed the idea as a project to star Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. When they were unable to participate, Landis cast Aykroyd—with whom he had worked previously—and a young but increasingly popular Murphy in his second feature-film role. Landis also cast Curtis against the intent of the studio, Paramount Pictures; she was famous mainly for her roles in horror films, which were looked down upon at the time. Principal photography took place from December 1982 to March 1983, entirely on location in Philadelphia and New York City. Elmer Bernstein scored the film, using Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera buffa The Marriage of Figaro as an underlying theme.DONT GET LEFT BEHIND YOU CAN FIND THE PREVIOUS VIDEO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uumqiMrxInIIF YOUR EVER BORED PLEASE CHECK OUT https://youtu.be/4Y4D8oN4GTkLIKE WHAT YOU WATCHED ? Slap on that fedora and crack your whip, cuz it's time we MEET STEVEN SPIELBERG—OK MAYBE WE JUST SAW HIM LIVE ON STAGE—WITH LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA—BUT HE SAID HE LOVED US at a special theatrical screening Raiders of the Lost Ark at the United Palace in Washington Heights. Is Bryce a true romantic for going to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in the theater multiple times with Randall? How did Dayna manage not to watch this movie until her 20s—and not see Temple of Doom as of this recording? Who is everyone's bigger first film crush, Harrison Ford or Karen Allen? And can we just say f@ck you Nazi monkey? Honestly, we have too many feelings about this film to give you too many answers.

It's anthology month at Welcome To Horror, and first up is another classic from Amicus: “The House That Dripped Blood”. A film in which Christopher Lee recreates the classic Two Ronnies “Four Candles” sketch; Denholm Elliott shows us his strangler; Worzel Gummidge buys a dodgy secondhand cape from the Crowman; and Mr Kipling makes exceedingly poor wax effigies. Definitely one of Amicus Films' finest, with a fantastic cast, strong stories and not an actual drop of blood in sight- watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers, and join us.

A Ghost Story for Christmas is a strand of annual British short television films originally broadcast on BBC One between 1971 and 1978, and revived sporadically by the BBC since 2005. With one exception, the original instalments were directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark and (Like the first 3rd doctor Adventure, The Spearhead from Space) the films were all shot on 16 mm colour film. The remit behind the series was to provide a television adaptation of a classic ghost story, in line with the oral tradition of telling supernatural tales at Christmas. Each instalment is a separate adaptation of a short story, ranges between 30 and 50 minutes in duration. The first five are adaptations of ghost stories by M. R. James, the sixth is based on a short story by Charles Dickens, and the two final instalments are original screenplays by Clive Exton and John Bowen respectively. The stories were titled A Ghost Story for Christmas in listings such as the Radio Times, although this did not appear on screen until ‘'The Signalman'' in 1976. An earlier black-and-white adaptation of M. R. James's Whistle and I'll Come to You, directed by Jonathan Miller and shown as part of the series Omnibus in 1968, is often cited as an influence upon the production of the films, and is sometimes included as part of the series. For tonight's, podcast, we watched:A Warning to the Curious, the 2nd of the films, broadcast on Christmas Eve in our favourite year of 1972. It featured Peter Vaughan, Clive Swift, Roger Milner, Gilly Fraser where an amateur archaeologist travels to a remote seaside town in Norfolk to search for the lost crown of Anglia, but after unearthing it he is haunted by a mysterious figure.AndThe Signalman, from 22 December 1976, featuring Denholm Elliott, Bernard Lloyd, Reginald Jessup, Carina Wyeth in which a railway signalman tells a curious traveller how he is being troubled by a spectre that seems to predict calamity. This, being the sixth of the original run of films, is based on a short story by Charles Dickens, thought to be influenced by Dickens's own involvement with the Staplehurst rail crash in Kent on 9 June 1865. While passing over a viaduct, The cast iron viaduct fractured, causing most of the carriages to fall into the river below. Dickens was in the first carriage, which derailed sideways but did not fall completely. It was suspended at a precarious angle by the coupling of the coach in front and held up by the remains of the viaduct's masonry. Dickens helped rescue other passengers, and was commended for his actions, but the experience subsequently had a profound effect on his life.$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. Happy New Year! I know it's still December but this movie has both Christmas and New Years in it, so, yay! Yes this movie has issues but that doesn't make it bad, it's still an enjoyable movie. Our hosts discuss racism, homophobia and unnecessary nudity, you know, the usual. They also chat about THAT John Landis incident with zero authority, Denholm Elliott's interesting marriage and the state of Jen's office. This is our last episode of the year and we're taking a wee break, we'll be back on January 24th. Contains strong language.
Eddie Murphy plays the con-man Billy Ray Valentine and Dan Ackroyd plays a spoiled investment banker Lewis Winthorp – one is barely making it while the other is living VERY comfortably...Let's see what happens when they…..trade places!
linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema “The Indiana Jones Masterclass” continues at Catching Up On Cinema with Kyle and Trevor's review of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)! Serving as the concluding chapter of the initial trilogy of Indiana Jones films, the Last Crusade once again reunites director Steven Spielberg, producer George Lucas, composer John Williams, and star Harrison Ford, for what is often regarded as the finest entry in the entire franchise. More character and dialogue driven than previous films in the series, the movie has a brighter audio-visual texture to it that results in a more lighthearted and outright fun adventure than it's grimmer and more violent predecessor, the Temple of Doom (1984). In addition to Harrison Ford's enthusiastic and subtly comic third at bat as Indy, the film also costars the legendary Sean Connery, playing against type as the bookish Henry Jones Sr., and also features the return of Denholm Elliott as Marcus Brody, and John Rhys-Davies as Sallah. Intentionally structured to mirror many of the story and action beats of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), the film brings back the gleefully punchable Nazis of the first film, and subs snake pits for rat infested tombs, and protracted truck chases for equally protracted tankchases, though at no point does it feel like anything less than a worthy sequel to the nigh untouchable standards set by that film. Probably the warmest and most eminently watchable of all the Indiana Jones films, the Last Crusade stands as one of the finest 3rdentries in all of film history. A fitting review subject for Catching Up On Cinema's 3rd year anniversary celebration. The third time is the charm and we're getting the family involved. From the legendary minds of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas comes the third chapter of the Indiana Jones saga, and subsequently the third episode in the Nighthawks Indiana Jones Special! In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade; our titular relic hunting archeologist is on the trail of the Christian Holy Grail with a soupçon of Arthurian Legend for flavor. The lesser-than-human Nazis are the bad guys once again and the race for one of Christianity's most sought after relics is on. Complicating things is the fact that Indy's Grail scholar father has fallen into enemy hands and it's up to him to rescue his patriarch and foil the Nazi's plan for global domination.Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade stars Harrison Ford as the heroic Indiana Jones and also features Allison Doody, Denholm Elliott, John Rhys-Davies, Julian Glover, and Sir Sean Connery. The Nighthawks go back for another helping of Jones and find that the third course may be the best? Join us at the conceptual table and decide for yourself.
Dana and Tom discuss the final movie of their trip through the original Indiana Jones trilogy with The Last Crusade starring Harrison Ford, Sean Connery, Denholm Elliott, and John Rhys-Davies. Plot Summary: In 1938, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) learns from Walter Donovan (Julian Glover) that his father, Henry Jones, Sr., (Sir Sean Connery) was searching for the Holy Grail using an incomplete inscription from a stone tablet as a guide and has since vanished. Jones receives Henry's Grail diary from Venice and heads there with Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott), where they meet Henry's Austrian colleague, Dr. Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody). They soon undertake the quest to solve the clues and locate the Holy Grail as a means to find Henry. After searching through libraries, a Nazi-controlled castle, and even Berlin, they are led to The Canyon of the Crescent Moon where the Grail is kept. Nature vs. nurture. Eddie Murphy vs. the establishment. Jamie Lee Curtis vs. shirts. "Trading Places," from John Landis, is one of the defining Murphy comedies of the 80s. Plus Dan Aykroyd is there doing a "rich" accent! You know the story: Two evil rich guys (Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche) orchestrate a bet in which down-on-his-luck Murphy gets thrust into an extravagant lifestyle. Meanwhile, Aykroyd plays the poor employee who gets everything stripped away, but it's okay because at least he gets to hang out with Jamie Lee Curtis. The Old Millennials discuss the enduring relevance of the film's message about privilege and opportunity, and they even tread through some of the thorny racial issues that pop up here too. Plus you know we gotta talk about the Belushi in the ape costume. Lots of topless women in this movie. (Begins a Jerry Seinfeld accent) "What's the deal with 80s comedies and random nudity?" And is Dan Aykroyd a good actor? That's a more complicated discussion than you might expect. And yes, the Old Millennials also walk through the complicated climax set on the commodities trading floor (something about orange juice), and Tyler still doesn't understand what's going on. Look, he's not really a numbers guy, okay? One thing's for sure - Eddie Murphy crushes this movie. Oh and Marcus Brody from "Indiana Jones" rules too (Denholm Elliott). Also discussed on this episode: Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) Soul (2020) Spontaneous (2020) Sound of Metal (2020) Possessor (2020) Cats (2019) Kung Fu Panda Trilogy The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (final season) Bridgerton (television series) Imposter (television series)

The second episode of “Ayktobyr” delves into the hit comedy that helped rocket Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy to superstardom and showed that Jamie Lee Curtis was capable of doing more than running from Michael Myers. Dan and Jon note the relevance of the movie's themes, such as white privilege and systemic racism, while appreciating the intelligence of the underappreciated screenplay and nuanced performances from its aforementioned stars as well as Don Ameche, Ralph Bellamy, and Denholm Elliott. A Room with a View is a 1985 British romance film directed by James Ivory, screenplay written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and produced by Ismail Merchant, of E. M. Forster's novel of the same name (1908). The film closely follows the novel by use of chapter titles to distinguish thematic segments. Set in England and Italy, it is about a young woman named Lucy Honeychurch in the restrictive and repressed culture of Edwardian England, and her developing love for a free-spirited young man, George Emerson. It stars Helena Bonham Carter as Lucy and Julian Sands as George, and features Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, and Simon Callow in supporting roles. The film received universal critical acclaim and was a box-office success. At the 59th Academy Awards, it was nominated for eight Academy Awards (including Best Picture), and won three: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design. It also won five British Academy Film Awards and a Golden Globe. In 1999, the British Film Institute placed A Room with a View 73rd on its list of the Top 100 British films of the 20th century. It was a modern means of keeping alive the old tradition of telling scary stories during the Christmas season. Although the series has been revived in recent years, the run spanning 1971- 1978 represents BBC's original strand of supernatural tales, starring classic actors such as Denholm Elliott and the directing talents of Lawrence Gordon Clark and bringing to life the works (chiefly) of M.R. James and Charles Dickens. It's BBC's Ghost Stories for Christmas, just in time for the holidays. On this episode, we explore the 1977 offering, STIGMA, starring Kate Binchy.
We discuss (with spoilers) Polina's pick A Room with a View (1985). Set in England and Italy, the film centers around a young woman (Helena Bonham Carter) in the restrictive and repressed culture of Edwardian era England and her developing love for a free-spirited young man (Julian Sands). Also stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, and Denholm Elliott. Recorded June 2017. Tweet us @HEAMCast and e-mail us at contact@heamcast.com. http://heamcast.libsyn.com/
Hey gang, Its been a while but we're back. This time, Roy wanted to go and review the 1991 Sean Astin film, Toy Soldiers, in which a group of terrorists take over a prep school because the main bad guy is obsessed with fathers. This one was a lot gorier than I remembered but did it hold up? Excessive violence, torture, Denholm Elliott, Z Cavariccis, dangling earrings, a set designed who knows his music and Sean Astin's mullet all on this episode of Ludicrous Speed. "When I was growing up, if we wanted a jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub." Eddie Murphy may have been a name on “Saturday Night Live” but he wasn’t a film star. Luckily, when John Landis wanted to cast him as Billy Ray Valentine in Trading Places, Murphy had just appeared in 48 Hrs., proving he had the charisma for the big screen. Without that success, Paramount Pictures was unconvinced. But it worked out and young Murphy became box office gold. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off 2017 with a series celebrating several of Murphy’s 80s classic starting with Landis’ 1983 film Trading Places. We talk about how we find the film hilarious but quite astute with its portrayal of the commodities market and how the story is equally relevant today as it was upon its release. We discuss some of the elements with which we struggle. We look at the comedy stylings Landis brought to the film, pulling from Laurel & Hardy, Preston Sturges, Mark Twain, even the Three Stooges. We look at the actors – including Dan Aykroyd, Murphy, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Jamie Lee Curtis, Denholm Elliott and Paul Gleason – and what they bring to the table. And we revel in the wonderful score Elmer Bernstein adds to the film, bringing doses of Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” into the folds. It’s a really fun film and a great way to celebrate both Christmas and New Year’s. We have a great time discussing it so check the movie out then tune in to the show! There are definitely problems with some of the films, and I definitely had issues with Prometheus, but it’s still an interesting entry as a prequel. Ridley Scott’s newest entry looks like he’s really amping things up some more and while I’m excited, I’m also hesitant to get too excited. Let’s just say my curiosity is definitely piqued." Pete's Trailer: War for the Planet of the Apes — "Andy Serkis is back to not win an acting oscar because he’s doing mo-cap I guess. The last Apes film ended up at 12 on our list, a solid showing for the Film Board’s general bucket of crap. This one looks like more stops have been officially pulled, even if they’ve avoided pulling them all. And yes, they put the words of the film’s title in Woody’s mouth in this trailer: 15 demerits."

So we are talking about this weeks article called "How spooky can be sexy" written by Victoria Blisse. Talking to a couple of people about coming onto the podcast, very exciting and didn't ever thing anyone would want to come onto the show. Did you nominate for the best sex blog? Did you put in your nomination for the #Top100SexBlogs2016? If not you have missed your chance. You can see the landing page here with all the nomination on it. So many have been put forward it is going to be a huge task to go through them all. The list will be ready for the beginning of December. Looking forward to that. A thing for vampires For me vampires are not sexy, they are terrifying just as they should be. A vampire is not your friend, it is a monster that wants to kill you. All I can think of is a praying mantis. For those who don't know, this is Rent-A-Ghost But why does a vampire represent, why is a vampire sexy? A vampire represents pure power, with no limits or restrictions on what it can do a vampire is all the things we are not. Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac so it is hardly a surprise so many are attracted to them. Buffy is the start of sexy vampires We think it is fair to say that Buffy the vampire slayer is probably the start of popularising vampires as being sexy. So it probably fair to blame that show for things like Twilight because without it they just wouldn't exist. Vampires on film There are of course two legendary actors who have plated Dracula. Bela Legosi and Christopher Lee. But wonderful actors in their own rights. But for me being English no one compares to Mr Lee. He is my Dracula. Less sexy Something that is much less sexy is a film called "The house that dripped blood" that stared John Pertwee as a vampire. There is nothing quiet like it. If you love a bad/good classic horror film then go for it. It also happens to star Christopher Lee, Jon Pertwee, and Denholm Elliott. You couldn't ask for a better cast to make a cheesy film. You can actually watch the whole thing on youtube. The Dresden Files Jim Butcher's series of books following Harry Dresden is a wonderful set of stories all about what it's like as a wizard private eye and living in a city with vampires, werewolfs, faries, demons, etc. They are a great read. Comedy I do love Armstrong & Miller's old school vampires in the modern world.
