Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, is hardly as offensive as director Sandeep Reddy Vanga probably intended it to be, but it's aggravating on many levels nonetheless. We discuss the film's infantile approach to its themes and Vanga's dedication to being edgy at the expense of storytelling and character development. We also talk about the film's unbearable length, inconsequential subplots, and the odd decision to not introduce Bobby Deol's villain sooner. Along the way, we also talk about the numerous petulant attacks that Vanga has made on critics and how his neediness is reflected in the film. — Hosted by Akhil Arora and Rohan Naahar, The Long Take is fully bootstrapped. Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where we're discussing our inner ANIMAL this week. But first, Amrita talks about Meghana Gulzar's SAM BAHADUR (03.06) starring Vicky Kaushal, Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub and others. The movie belongs to Vicky who is shaping up to be the most interesting and perhaps most successful star of his generation but is that enough to save this movie? And then we go straight into our main review of Sandeep Vanga Reddy's Animal (19.24) starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandana, Bobby Deol and others. Once again, this is a movie anchored by the bravura performance of its lead actor but there's a lot to discuss with this one. Our Tiger series retrospective is now available as a Patreon exclusive. Credits Banner: T Series and Bhadrakali Pictures Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Rahsmika Mandanna, Anil kapoor, Tripti Dimri, Bobby Deol, Babloo Prithviraj, Shakthi Kapoor, Music: Harshavardhan Rameshwar and other BGM: Harshavardham Rameshwar Cinematography: Amit Roy ISC Eidting: Sandeep reddy Vanga Production Design: Suresh Selvarajan Fights: Supreme Sundar Screenplay: Sandeep reddy Vanga, Pranay Reddy Vanga, Saurabh Gupta, Dialogues: Saurabh Gupta Story - Direction: Sandeep Reddy Vanga Release Date: December 1st, 2023 Writing/Direction: The movie's story or core point is a man who has been traumatized by his father since hid childhood has psychopathic tendencies and he goes insane because of his dad's neglect since his childhood. Therefore he's supposed to have animalistic qualities about human nature. It's hard to explain this stuff without using English words so please forgive me this time. Writing is actually the biggest villain of the movie not Bobby Deol I will explain why. Given the core point and movie was promoted as such, you would think its a family drama with strained relationship between father and son. Movie is not about that. It's about a man's descent into madness because of father's neglect and he never gave him the love and affection that deserved so he is like this. BUt it's not convincing at all. Thats the biggest problem. There's no reason/nothing shown for us to connect as a father son relationship or for us to care. I will take example of a movie that Im not a big fan of but in Ala Vaikuntapuram Lo he clearly shows Murali Sharma has made his life a living hell since he was young with a grudge on Jayaram so we feel for Allu Arjun's character and relate to him and buy that father son relationship. Here Vanga doesnt show anything. He tells you but doesn't show it much. Yet this guy still loves his dad. The opportunity to make a commercial film is there but it didnt work for me. Family drama part is nonexistent, romance part is comical she falls for one dialogue about alpha males and then next scene cancels her engagement and then Hua Main song, and then action part about grandfather wealth wars. But he villains have no proper motives etc. nothing is properly established or explained about the family heir wars to begin with. Another example a lot pf people didn't like KGF2 but its same like animal yenti ante, whatever Rocky Bhai does since you connect with him, it seems believable. Because I didnt connect here, you dont connect with what he's doing so Vanga's paithyam is in full affect. To positives, Hua Main to interval is next level movie. Masterpiece level if you ask. Best sequence in the movie is revealing the suspense of Varun and that flashback. Too good. That entire stretch was so entertaining and amazing. Also the body double part was so ridiculous but so entertaining. But then rest of the movie never reached that level again. And then the post credit scene didnt really work. Remembered oh Zoya said that right but it felt forced and then im not sure theres even scope to make a sequel to be honest. But thats just me. Direction by Sandeep Reddy Vanga is decent. Hero characterization throughout the movie is superb and 1st half taking is very good for that stretch but rest of the movie doesnt work or feel convincing. Due to the lack of conviction you feel a disconnect and as said before 2nd half was like his piathyam whatever he wanted to show was more for triggering audiences and critics rather than telling a emotional and relatable story with an interesting hero characterization. That being said whether you disagree or agree with a film or whatever the content is, Sandeep Reddy has created a brand for himself making unique movies which star controversy and open for a lot of discourse. This is for sure. So while I might agree or disagree with what he showed, its the audience responsibility to take it however they do. That is for sure.

We choose two films in which dancing is a plot element: Disco Dancer and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. That's about all they have in common, other than being fairly lightweight concoctions that we enjoy very much. Episode breakdown: 30 minutes on Disco Dancer, another 10 or so on JBJ, then another 25+ on other films (Indian and otherwise) that are about dancing in some way, our favorite film dancers, etc. Tell us: • Does Disco Dancer have some of the best deaths of all time? • And is Rajesh Khanna doing the most extra cameo of all time? • What flavors make up Jimmy ice cream? • Do you know any disco scholars who can assess that aspect of the cultural context of this film? And tell us how that works as the dressing of a class struggle vendetta? • How did Bobby Deol end up in JBJ? • Has anything this fun ever happened to you at a train station? Hola PeepsWe are back with another epi of our weekly pod for y'all. This week we watched 9 Hours on Hulu/ Hotstar filmmaker Krish Jagarlamudi's adaptation of the Telugu novel Thommidhi Gantalu (nine hours), written by Malladi Venkata Krishnamurthy. Directed by Niranjan Kaushik and Jacob Verghese, the series has diverse and complicated characters falling on different sides of the moral compass. Three inmates have escaped prison right after their roll call to execute a robbery of three major banks. However, the robbery is not the challenge here. The catch is that they have to be back in their cells by the time of the next roll call, which is just 9 hours. 9 Hours has everything that you want out of a good heist series but kinda gets lost in morality lessons and backstories. Can Watch.Next on our list is Bobbywood's own #Aashram in its third Avatar on Voot. Based on the activities of a self-proclaimed godman, Gurmeet Ram Rahim. Baba Nirala (Bobby Deol) is ruthless and relies on corrupt politicians to gain power while preying on innocent women. Baba, being a conman, hides his true intentions from the public like a pro and fools his devotees by wearing a mask of pretence. Bobby Deol takes Nirala to another level. We loved this season as well. Cannot wait for next season.Last but not the least, the patriotic Major, the biopic of real-life hero Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan (Adivi Sesh), who saved the lives of numerous hostages before being martyred by terrorists in the Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai on November 26, 2008 . The first half of the movie however is romance. That's it from us this week folksSee ya next week with more.Team Desis.

This week's Awful and Awesome has Abhinandan and Rajyasree finally lavishing some praise on a film. There are a few trailers, an online series and a commercial to wrap up this episode, and Rajyasree talks about the “grandest wedding in town” as well.Deadpool 2 replaces the otherwise promised review of High Jack (sorry listeners!) Directed by David Leitch and starring Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool 2 is a superhero movie “for adults” that hit the cinemas this week.Abhinandan says: “I was curious to see what is a superhero film for adults”. He feels it is “brilliantly written”. Rajyasree, while admiring Reynolds, talks about the quirkiness of Deadpool 2 which comes from the “cracks about superheroes” in the movie itself. Abhinandan adds that the “opening credits were hysterically funny”. Rajyasree “loved the music in Deadpool”, while Abhinandan recommends it and calls it a “most satisfying film”.Next up, the trailer of Race 3 gets hysterical reception from Abhinandan and Rajyasree. Directed by Remo D'Souza, the movie will star Bobby Deol, among others. Rajyasree sounds almost petrified when she says, “Bobby Deol is back and he is bare-chested!” Abhinandan feels it is the “shittiest trailer… I hope they make Rs 20”.Moving on “from the sublime to the ridiculous and back to the normal”, the trailer of Bohemian Rhapsody seems promising. The film is a biography of Queen singer Freddie Mercury and stars Rami Malek. Rajyasree says: “It's amazing how much they've made him look like Freddie Mercury.” Abhinandan mentions, “Growing up, I have loved Queen's music, but no I've not been a fan of Freddie Mercury… I was underwhelmed by the trailer”.Another trailer that Rajyasree really likes is of Bhavesh Joshi: Superhero starring Anil Kapoor's son, Harsh Vardhan Kapoor, who made his debut in Mirziya. It is a “vigilante drama” revolving around a group of boys “who keep seeing things happening around them” and finally decide to take the law into their own hands.Abhinandan approves of the trailer and says “definitely makes you want to watch the film”. Rajyasree adds, “it does look like a cool film”. While she seems impressed by Harsh Vardhan, Abhinandan comments, “every time he opens his mouth, he says something so stupid… just pipe down ya”.The trailer of Mowgli by Andy Serkis wins praise from both Abhinandan and Rajaysree. Abhinandan thinks “it was spectacular” while Rajyasree talks about Serkis' intention to make a dark version of The Jungle Book. Rajyasree adds that it's “spectacularly shot”. Abhinandan, however, talks about how The Jungle Book has “worked in every avatar of its making” and that Hollywood remakes on the original story could jeopardise this film. Moving on to what's new on Netflix, 13 Reasons Why (Season 2) has been aired. The show revolves around Hannah Baker who commits suicide because she is bullied in school. Rajyasree informs us that it is a “very popular show, based on a book by Jay Asher”.The great "Royal Wedding" of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle caught Rajyasree's attention over the weekend. She says: “More than 29 million Americans tuned in to watch them getting married”. She also joked about the large number of security personnel present at the wedding. “If a terrorist attack had happened, they would have been able to get rid of half of the British entertainment industry and Oprah Winfrey and the others,” she adds. Finally, a “spectacular commercial” called “Who stole the cup” concludes the agenda of the day. Rajaysree says “it's a UK production” starring the legends of football. The ad is about a betting site, which Rajyasree could not figure out. Abhinandan asks her: “You didn't know about the product watching the ad, does that mean it's a good ad or a shit ad?”All this and much more. Listen up. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se, the third film in the franchise, is an ode to Ayurveda. Yes, you heard that right. Sunny Deol plays vaid Puran Singh who can cure any ailment with an ancient herbal concoction called the 'Vajra Kavach'. Among the three of them, the Deols have over 100 years of making movies. I think it's time to reinvent.
