In this episode, I have the pleasure of getting to know pet author and certified animal behavior consultant Amy Shojai. We get started with Amy's story of how she got inspired to get into writing about pets while working in a small vet clinic in Eastern Kentucky. At the clinic, she witnessed first hand the wide variety of treatments and pets and need to convey important information to pet parents in a way that they could easily understand. That experience got her started writing about pets for publications like Cat Fancy and Dog Fancy. She developed a signature writing style for articles that started with a story about a pet, transitioned into the featured medical information and wrapped up with an update on how the pet is doing after treatment. That structure of leading with a strong hook followed by education got people's interest, especially when there was a happy ending to share! Amy and I also talk about why we love to read fiction written by dog experts. Amy admits that she has thrown books across the room when the author clearly doesn't know a thing about dogs and writes unrealistic or dangerous stories about them! Same, girl! If you dream of writing about pets, or if you just want to promote your pet business through really great stories, you will enjoy this interview!

Cats learn to fear their carriers if the only time they see it appear is when it is taken out of the closet, they are shoved inside it, taken away from their home, dragged out of the case, plopped on a slippery cold, metal surface and some strange person starts poking and prodding them. Of course, they come to associate the sight of the crate with the unpleasant experience of going to the vet.  You are going to do the opposite and train your new kitten right from the very start to associate the carrier with fun, positive experiences.   And it's not too late to get your older cat to accept one as well. In this episode, I'll explain the steps to take so that transporting the cat is easier for you and the feline when you do have to go to the vet.   Why keep feeding your dog's meals from the same old food bowls, when there are so many other ways to do this that make your dog happy and mentally stimulated. When your pet is ill or injured, don’t you wish they could tell you with words how they are feeling? Would be nice, but what we have, is how they react and behave. When sick, dogs and cats in general, react very differently from one another. I’ll explain how and why. Michael Birnbaum, my artist friend, returns to tell another story from his childhood about his first dog and their encounter with fire.  The story is entitled, “Trouble with Matches.” Why is it, that multiple cats living in a household, often don’t get along – either avoiding each other or fighting a lot? There is a major factor that you may be oblivious to, but is highly important to your cat. I’ll tell you about this and then, from the book, Cat Sense by John Bradshaw, I’ll share a list of subtle indicators you can watch for, to understand if the cats actually do or do not get along. Alley Cat Rescue (ACR) sponsors the 2nd Annual "Free Feral Cat Spay Day" on April 27, 2011. But just what is a "feral cat" and why should you care? Service dogs have become a very public and vital part of our society. But there’s another area that doesn’t get quite as much hand-waving. Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) includes companion animals as a part of the patient’s therapy in a treatment plan designed by a health care professional. For instance, a child might be more willing to toss a ball for the dog to fetch, than follow a human therapist’s instructions to rehab a painful injury. A pioneer in the field, Nancy Stanley first introduced "Animal Therapy" to severely handicapped children and to convalescent hospitals for the elderly in 1982 after founding Tender Loving Zoo, a nonprofit organization. She talks about her experiences, the benefits of pet therapy, and new gift book PILLOW WITH A HEARTBEAT, narrated by therapy dog Truffles.
