January 11 marked the twenty-third anniversary of the opening of the US military prison on occupied land in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Clearing the FOG speaks with Andy Worthington, an investigative journalist and author of The Guantanamo Files. Worthington explains that the United States opened the prison in Guantanamo to avoid legal restrictions. He describes the connections between Guantanamo and the CIA 'black sites' where prisoners were tortured and who the men are that were recently released as well as who remains. There are calls for Joe Biden to release all of the men and end the scandal of the prison at Guantanamo Bay before he leaves office. For more information, visit PopularResistance.org.

He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it. History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamour of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.” (Martin Luther King) Welcome: What's true of Riverside Church when we meet together in-person is true of us online. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded November 8th, 2023 A tapestry of Pablo Picasso's haunting Guernica hangs mutely in the foyer of the United Nations Security Council. The 25 by 11 foot recreation of the Spanish artist's cri de coeur recalling the ruthless bombing of civilians in that Basque town in 1937 had served as backdrop for press conferences by that august body until February 3rd, 2003 when, fearing life imitating art in the form of George Bush's coming "shock and awe" destruction of Baghdad, the UN custodians of decorum covered it from the cameras, preemptively shielding Secretary of State, Colin Powell from any embarrassment the image might cause America and its accomplices as he laid forth his bogus casus belli for the second Iraq war. The "Blitzkrieg" of Guernica inspiring Picasso so long ago has been reenacted daily in Gaza for the last month; with many times more men, women, children, and animals killed, injured, made homeless, and traumatized. Thousands are dead. Hundreds of thousands wounded, but the great resistance feared by Bush and his claque way back when is apparently not a worry for current leaders of the Western world, who remain unanimous and unapologetic in their support of Israel and its project for the new Israel despite the horrendous cost. William S. Geimer is a peace activist, Professor Emeritus of Law at Washington and Lee University, military veteran who resigned his 82nd Airborne commission in opposition to the war against Vietnam, and author of the book, 'Canada: The Case for Staying Out of Other People's Wars'. In 2020 Bill founded the Greater Victoria Peace School, which he says has, since his retirement, "been a success and my board members are carrying on admirably with peace education. William S. Geimer in the first half. And; most here have probably forgotten entirely about Guantanamo Bay prison, set up so long ago to confine "the worst of the worst" in George Bush junior's Global War on Terror. Incredibly, all these years later, prisoners still languish there, without the benefit of the protection of laws that were once the pride of Western Civilization. Andy Worthington remembers though; and more, he's been working all these years to both publicize the plight of those held, and get them real justice. Last week he attended in London one of the "ten coordinated global vigils for the closure of Guantanamo". He reminds: Sixteen of the thirty men are still held, after having been approved for release, as of November 1st, between 404 and 5,031 days. Andy Worthington and remembering Guantanamo in the second half. But first, Bill Geimer and the Gaza atrocity happening before our eyes. On this edition of Parallax Views, Jordanian filmmaker Darin J. Sallam joins Parallax Views to discuss her feature-length debut film Farha. Written and directed by Sallam, Farha tells the coming-of-age story of a brave, curious young woman (played by Karam Taher in a tour-de-force acting debut) living in 1948 Palestine who dreams of going to the city, receiving an education, and becoming a teacher. Farha's life is irrevocably altered, however, when Israeli military invade her Palestinian village in a series of violent events that have become known in the Arab world as the Nakba or "The Catastrophe". Farha is a deeply moving story of survival that attempts to shed light on a story Palestinian Arabs have passed down through the generations and may well mark the first feature-length film that isn't a documentary to feature the Nakba as a key element of its story. In this conversation Darin and I discuss a number of topics including: - Her experiences directing the film - Working with the cast, which included such well-known actors of the Arab world as Ali Sulliman of the TV series Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan and Ashraf Barhom (The Kingdom, Paradise Now); the casting of the lead character - The meaning of the title Farha and how it refers to not only the main character but the Arabic word for "Joy" - The development of the movie, the difficulty getting funding, and depicting the events of the Nakba in a thoughtful manner - The emotions that came out during the filming of the production especially amongst the Gazan refugees who served as extras in the film - The motif of water in the movie - The accusations of antisemitism that have been made against Farha - Whether or not the story of Farha ends on a hopeful note - The approach taken to depicting the Nakba in Farha; why Darin chose not to show gory violence - Farha as a universal, humane story which can speak to many different people - The passing down of the story of the Nakba throughout the generations and putting that story to film - Does Darin see a bit of Farha in herself? - The positive reactions to the film thus far - Telling the truth - Farha as not just a story about the Nakba but a story about love, community, loss, trauma, and memory - Liberation and loss; the open wound of the Nakba - Being thrust into traumatic events without a choice; surviving the trauma and living because one must do so - Farha being submitted to the Academy Award - And much, much more! In the second segment of the show, journalsit Andy Worthington, author of The Guantanamo Files: The Stories of the 774 Detainees in America's Illegal Prison, joins us to discuss the unsettling history of military torture and detainment at Guantanamo Bay since 2002. Guantanamo Bay has been in the news, at least within the alternative media sphere again, after former Gitmo prisoner Mansoor Adayfi claimed in an interview with Mike Prysner of The Empire Files and Eyes Left Podcast that he was tortured by U.S. 2024 Presidential hopeful Governor Ron DeSantis at the infamous military prison. This conversation is a bit interesting as when it was recorded Andy was skeptical that the timelines surrounding DeSantis' time at Guantanmo Bay lined up with Mansoor's testimony (although this is not to say that he thinks Mansoor was lying, but rather that the story needed more clarification). However, about five days after our initial conversation, Andy and I spoke again. At that point Andy had spoken with Mansoor in order to clarify the issues. This clarification appears to add more weight to Mansoor's claim and means that the DeSantis/Gitmo story merits serious investigation.  Among the topics discussed in this conversation: - The origins of Guantanamo Bay (alternatively known as GTMO or Gitmo) and the types of torture that went on there - A prison designed by the George W. Bush administration in the early days of the War on Terror to detainee terrorism suspects without much interference/oversight from courts with regards to what would go on there - Human rights abuses at Guantanamo Bay - How was the veil of secrecy around what went on Guantanamo Bay pierced? - The "enhanced interrogation" euphemism - Guantanamo Bay in the Obama and Trump years -  Why has Guantanamo Bay not been shut down despite the controversy around it? - Obama's campaign promise to close the prison - The question of torture's effectiveness in dealing with terrorism - Former detainee Mansoor Adayfi's claims that Ron DeSantis, as a JAG officer, was involved in torture at Guantanamo Bay - The Guantanamo Bay hunger strikes of 2005 (and 2006) - Waterboarding - And much, much more

The prosecution of Julian Assange marks the first time a publisher of truthful information has been indicted under the Espionage Act. In the first of a series of episodes exploring what WikiLeaks exposed and the lengths the US government went to silence them, Primary Sources looks at WikiLeaks' role in exposing human rights abuses at the notorious US prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Nearly ⅓ of the charges against WikiLeaks publisher Assange pertain to Guantanamo Bay Detainee Assessment files released by WikiLeaks. Yet these files remain under discussed by the media. To help understand what they are and why they matter, host Chip Gibbons is joined by Andy Worthington, a leading expert on Guantanamo Bay who worked with Wikileaks on the release of the Guantanamo Files, and Clive Stafford Smith, a pioneering human rights attorney who, in the aftermath of 9/11, was one of the first lawyers willing to represent detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Scott interviews Andy Worthington about Guantanamo Bay, America's secret black site prison, where 40 men are still being held, some of them without ever having been charged with a crime. President Obama famously campaigned on closing Guantanamo, but ultimately was unable (or unwilling) to do so. President Trump, too, allowed the atrocious human rights abuses to continue throughout his administration. Worthington is optimistic about the possibility of change, but if the American people continue to turn a blind eye to this issue, things may simply carry on indefinitely. Scott interviews Andy Worthington about his testimony in Julian Assange’s extradition hearing. Worthington reminds us how important the revelations in Chelsea Manning’s Guantanamo Files leak were, stressing just how much harm has been done to the dozens of men held, and often tortured, there—including the 40 who are still detained today. Assange, says Worthington, is not a hacker or a hostile intelligence actor; he is simply a heroic journalist working to expose government crimes to the people. Discussed on the show: “Rasul v. Scott interviews the great Patrick Cockburn about his written testimony in Julian Assange’s extradition hearing. Cockburn argued, as have many other witnesses for the defense, that Assange’s activities with WikiLeaks amount to the very best kind of journalism: the exposure of government misdeeds to the people. Far more journalists, in fact, should be doing what Assange does. Cockburn also reminds us that the information Chelsea Manning leaked and Assange published was not even all that secret. It was on a server that millions of soldiers and government employees had access to, a far cry from the top secret exposure of informants that the U.S. government would have you believe. The prosecution has even had to admit on record that the leak of this information has not resulted in the endangerment of a single informant. Title: The World We All Want By: Andy Worthington Bible Reading: Book of Acts (Chapter 4, verse 42-47) Recorded: Sunday 08/03/2020 at our Moseley Kings Heath Gathering. Description: Part of our teaching series called '#AGAIN' looking at the early chapters in the book of Acts in the Bible. Our hope and prayer as we explore these studies together is that God would begin to awaken us to what he is doing and will do again. Maybe, just maybe, we might dare to see extraordinary things happen among us! The World We All Want: Video - https://vimeo.com/384231047/7b2746b4b3 Everywhere we look, people want to change the world. From climate change to poverty, from political reform to issues of security, everyone wants a better world. What about you? What kind of world do you long for? When you dream about the kind of world that could be, what is it like? How do people relate? What happens? What doesn’t happen? In the ancient world, life was very hard. With no welfare state or NHS it was up to you, and those around you, to survive and get by. We can easily forget just how precarious life was. One bad illness or poor harvest was not just inconvenient, it could mean total disaster. And so, when this strange group of people started living in a radically different way – sharing their possessions, caring for outcasts, healing the sick - people began to really take notice. It was almost as if they were creating a different world. January 11 was the 18th anniversary of the opening of Guantanamo Bay military prison. It was opened by President George W. Bush's administration to hold detainees indefinitely in the "war on terrorism." President Barack Obama pledged to close Guantanamo, but he failed, and when President Donald Trump was elected, there were still 41 prisoners at Guantanamo and Trump could whatever he wanted with the detention facility. For this week's show, Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola welcome Andy Worthington, who is an investigative journalist, author, campaigner, and activist. He is the co-founder of Close Guantanamo, and his work can be found at Each anniversary Andy makes a trip from the United Kingdom to the United States to participate in actions and speaking events aimed at shutting down Guantanamo. He's done this for 10 years and recounts his 2020 trip, describing what makes this political moment so bleak for prisoners still confined at Guantanamo. Andy highlights what has defined Trump's policy around Guantanamo, and he also comments on from CIA torture architect Dr. James Mitchell during a Guantanamo hearing this past week. Later in the show, Andy expresses his solidarity with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who published the "Gitmo Files," which Andy incorporated into his work telling the stories of the 774 prisoners brought to Guantanamo.

Worthington reminds us that President Obama campaigned on closing the prison, but quickly gave up after resistance from republicans. Trump, meanwhile, has kept his campaign promise not to release any more prisoners.
