Sixth and final Apollo space mission which landed on the Moon
POPULARITY
Today in 1972, Apollo 17 landed on the moon. So far, it's the last mission that put human beings on the lunar surface. And it was the only Apollo mission where the dust all over that surface gave an astronaut a strong allergic reaction. Plus: around this time in 2011, a cat in Italy named Tommasso kind of inherited a multi-million dollar estate. The Apollo Astronaut Who Was Allergic To The Moon (Mental Floss) Tommaso, the Italian cat, inherits $13 million from owner Maria Assunta (The World) You don't have to give us the moon, but how about backing our show on Patreon? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coolweirdawesome/support

Love Was His Meaning - Reading and Praying with Julian of Norwich
Fantasy author Neil Gaiman wrote - "Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten." When thinking about what I would preach for Advent of 2024, I thought about all of the angst in our society right now - how so many of the things we fear in society and politics and culture seem unstoppable and sometimes become debilitating anxieties. This story, broken up into sermons preached at St. Matthias Church in Waukesha, Wisconsin for Advent, reminds us that dragons can indeed be confronted with the help of Hope, Integrity and Perseverance. I'm pretty sure mother Julian's writings are going to figure in significantly here. I hope this brings you some joy and comfort in this advent season.

This week we're going back to the moon! It's a very spacey episode as we talk about a dark matter mirrorverse, and the search for Planet IX, and in the second half we go on a Lunar Odyssey. Along the way, we talk about the problem with pre-print servers and the growing distrust of science by the general public. Harrison Schmitt's father was a geologist but it wasn't until college thatSchmitt decided to follow in his dad's footsteps. By the mid-1960's, Schmitt had a Ph.D and was working at the U.S. Geological Survey's Astrogeology Center. Before long, NASA was looking for geologists to advise on the upcoming lunar missions. Schmitt then advised the Apollo 11 crew on what to look for and to bring home. And he also consulted with every subsequent mission. But before too long, NASA decided to send Scmitt himself to the moon and the rest is history - the only man to visit the moon who was not a military aviator. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Schmitt describes training in the T-38 and helicopters with the U.S. Air Force at Chandler AFB and why that training was so critical to his mission. He also tells us what it was like to blast off, walk on the moon, and take one of the most famous photos in history. He also tells us what he considers to be the most important geological discoveries from the Apollo missions.

We have finally reached the end of the Apollo program, but the return of Apollo 17 from the moon doesn't mark the end of the space race era just yet. We conclude our Apollo @50 series of looks at the Apollo missions to the Moon with looks back and forward.
50 years ago today, the three Apollo 17 astronauts departed the Moon to return to Earth. It was the first time in human history that a scientist set foot on another world: geologist Harrison 'Jack' Schmitt. What lessons does this historic mission have to teach us in the coming years as humans finally return to the Moon with the Artemis program?

AS17-135-20680 (OF300). This sequence of numbers and letters may mean nothing to you, but head to the Apollo 17 photo archive at NASA's online headquarters and search that file number. What you can see and freely download due to all declassification of the archive, has been a subject of hot debate and study for years. What looks like the impossible is present on the surface of our moon. Some say this photo is THE smoking gun of extraterrestrial activity outside of earth. Some people simply shake their heads and say they cannot explain its mind-shattering implications. It seems that no one is saying what it could be. Is the photo truly a smoking gun? Outer space was on the minds of Kansans in 1972. Kansas astronaut Ron Evans journeyed to the moon on the Apollo 17 mission. Western Kansas was being considered for the new Space Shuttle launch site, and some locals did not like that idea. And the state was a hotbed of UFO sightings, including notable encounters in Dighton and Delphos. (Note: Segment 2 starts at 0:19:20 and segment 3 starts at 0:36:02)
