This week, we're covering a broad swath, from President-Elect Trump's shocking choice for NASA Administrator to new delays for the Artemis lunar program to UFOs/UAPs! And for such an adventure, we turn to Leonard David, the most seasoned space reporter and journalist out there. Trump's pick for NASA, billionaire and private astronaut Jared Isaacman, came as a surprise to space watchers, and his name was not just missing from the shortlist but from *any* list making the rounds. However, he is widely supported and should bring renewed energy to the space agency. Then, after discussing yesterday's NASA press conference about Artemis--in which more delays were announced (no surprise to any of us)--we talk to Leonard about recent disclosures about UFO/UAP government records and the overall consideration of why people think they walk among us (and if they do, Musk is probably one of them). Headlines: Jared Isaacman Nominated as NASA Administrator Artemis II Mission Delayed, Artismis III mission pushed to mid-2027. And Tariq defends his creative choice of words to compare different sizes of asteroids. Main Topic: Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) Shift from UFO to UAP (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena) Discussion about potential alien visitation Concerns about public perception and societal impacts Need for more rigorous scientific approach to UAP research Calls for NASA and National Science Foundation funding Skepticism about current congressional hearings and government disclosure Potential for document declassification under a potential Trump administration Hosts: Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik Guest: Leonard David Download or subscribe to This Week in Space at https://twit.tv/shows/this-week-in-space. Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful. – Joshua J. Marine Host, Saanvi Phaneendra with reporters Diya and Hasini tackle a topic that every teen can relate to: challenges. Challenges come in all shapes and sizes, from small daily struggles to monumental obstacles that seem impossible to overcome. But here's the thing about challenges: they're not just roadblocks; they're stepping stones. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, to learn, and to become stronger than before. Whether it's in our personal lives, our careers, or even in the vast and mysterious expanse of space, challenges push us to innovate, adapt, and keep moving forward. They remind us that nothing worth achieving comes easy, and that persistence is the key to success. As the Space Spotlight reporter, Saanvi discusses one of NASA's most ambitious endeavors: the Artemis Mission. It's not just a return to the Moon; it's a mission that aims to pave the way for future human exploration of Mars. The Artemis program is daring, groundbreaking, and yes, full of enormous challenges. The next time you face a challenge, no matter how big or small, don't shy away from it. Face it. Embrace it. See it for what it is – an opportunity. An opportunity to push your boundaries, to find new solutions, and to emerge stronger and wiser than before. Zoe Saldaña has appeared in the top three grossing movies of all time – Avatar, Avatar: Way of Water and Avengers: Endgame. You may know her as Uhura in the Star Trek reboot films, Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, or as Neytiri in Avatar. Now Zoe is taking a break from sci-fi and fantasy to star in a new, Earth-based TV series called Special Ops: Lioness. It's a spy thriller about a covert programme that trains and dispatches women around the world as undercover operatives. Zoe joined Nuala to record an interview last week, before the US actors' strike was called. The Metropolitan Police has started using counter-terrorism tactics to hunt down the 100 worst male sexual predators targeting women. Nuala gets the reaction of former Inspector of Constabulary Zoe Billingham, who led the 2021 review of the policing response to violence against women and girls, calling for it to be treated with the same priority as terrorism. 15 countries in the Middle East and North Africa still apply laws that require women to either 'obey' their husbands or seek their permission to leave the marital home, work, or travel. That's according to a new report from Human Rights Watch, which compares the state of male guardianship laws across the region. The report finds that, although women's rights activists have been successful in winning some freedoms, new restrictions are still being implemented – particularly in areas of conflict such as Yemen and Syria. Rothna Begum, Senior Women's Rights Researcher, joins Nuala to explain the findings. Yomi Adegoke is the co-author of the bestselling guide, Slay in Your Lane: A Black Girl's Bible. Now she's stepping into the world of fiction with her debut novel, The List. Journalist Ola and her fiancé Michael are getting married in a month, but their excitement is shattered when a database of men in the world of media, and allegations of sexual harassment against them, is anonymously posted online. And Michael is on it. How will the couple navigate the fall out? Yomi joins Nuala to talk about why she wanted to write this story. For the first time in fifty years, humans will soon be returning to the moon. Sara Pastor is the project manager and Chief Engineer of the International Habitation module – the place where astronauts will live and study scientific findings in space as part of the Artemis Mission, set to happen in the next few years. Sara joins Nuala to talk about why this is such an important project for human exploration, and how women are at the centre of it.

It won't be cheap, but it is very feasible that tourists could soon be traversing around the moon.  Not only that, there could one day be a permanent human presence there.  That's because in its latest mission NASA's betting on finding enough water on the lunar surface to make it habitable.  Today the Washington Post's space reporter, Christian Davenport on how that could then lead us to Mars.  Featured:  Christian Davenport, reporter covering NASA and space, The Washington Post

The Science Behind Your Favorite Thanksgiving Dishes Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and for many people, that means it's time to start thinking about what will be on the menu for dinner that night. Many people will opt for a classic turkey: others, a vegetarian-focused meal. Regardless of the plan, preparing food for the holiday can take some planning, and there's a lot of science that goes into it. Cookbook author Kenji López-Alt thinks about the science behind cooking a lot. He's the author of The Food Lab: Better Home Cooking Through Science, and he lists Thanksgiving as his favorite holiday. That makes him the expert on all things brine, sides, and pie. López-Alt joins Ira from his home in Seattle, Washington, to answer questions about the science behind Thanksgiving foods.   NASA's Massive Rocket Finally Launches To The Moon Early Wednesday morning the Artemis 1 mission launched, the first integrated flight test of NASA's Space Launch System—a massive rocket that NASA hopes will enable an eventual lunar landing. The uncrewed launch was a long time coming. Elements of the program have been under development for over a decade. If all goes according to plan, a second Artemis flight—this time, with crew—will take place in 2024, with a crewed lunar landing in 2025. Another component of the program, a tiny spacecraft called Capstone, entered into lunar orbit several days prior to Artemis. It will test a complicated orbit planned for a potential lunar space station called Gateway, which would serve as a way station for astronauts moving between Earth and the Moon. Ira talks with Jim Free, NASA's Associate Administrator for Exploration Systems Development, and Brendan Byrne, space reporter for WMFE and host of the Are We There Yet podcast, about the test flight and what lies ahead for the Artemis program. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

In this episode of Future Tech, I discuss what having a moon base would be like. The reason I want to talk about it is because NASA is planning to launch the Artemis Mission to the Moon and establish a base over the next couple of years, including the first woman on the moon and the first person of color on the moon. These are two exciting things and a lot of people say to me like well, why a moon base? Aren't we supposed to be going to Mars? Well, an analogy I can compare it to would be to say It's the same thing as learning how to ride a bicycle and drive a car. The moon is learning how to ride a bicycle and then Mars is learning how to drive a car. One is less difficult than the other. Tune in to hear my thoughts on what the moon base will be like! This episode is sponsored by the world's first productivity shot, Magic Mind.
