Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 25-minutes discussing LA Comic-Con's inclusion of an AI Stan Lee sideshow attraction where-in guests may pay to "talk" to "Stan Lee", and how this is actually the scariest thing we could talk about during the spookiest month of the year. Frank and Jonathan catch up after a busy con season and dig into the biggest geek stories they've missed. We react to the Mandalorian & Grogu trailer and its old-school adventure vibe, talk through why a Game of Thrones one-two punch in 2026 could work (and where House of the Dragon still needs to land), and break down the first real look at the Wolverine game from Insomniac. We also map out what the Peaky Blinders movie and sequel series might cover, debate the point of The Simpsons Movie 2, and line up a sharp October watchlist. Plus: Jordan Peele's Him hits digital with bonus content, and we're giving away copies today. Timestamps & Topics 00:00–02:24 • Catch-up and con season recap (Crocker Con, LA Comic Con, highlight video) 02:24–11:08 • Mandalorian & Grogu poster + trailer reactions, practical effects, scale, IMAX plans 11:08–19:12 • Game of Thrones 2026: House of the Dragon S3 expectations, big battles, “movie-episode” idea; A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms tone and Dorne 19:12–23:21 • The Simpsons Movie 2: why now, scope, and what would make it worth theaters 23:21–29:19 • Wolverine (Insomniac) gameplay: combat feel, Omega Red stakes, Mystique story tricks, scent-tracking 29:19–39:51 • Peaky Blinders: WWII film setup, Tommy vs. fascism, the 1953 sequel series and what shifts after the war 39:51–40:23 • What we're rewatching: Invincible 40:23–40:51 • Ad: Jordan Peele's Him now on digital + bonus content 40:49–40:51 • Giveaway: Free copies of Him dropping on our socials today 40:51–48:14 • October Watchlist: Solar Opposites, Hazbin Hotel, Star Wars: Visions, It: Welcome to Derry, The Witcher's final season 48:14–52:18 • Horror picks, Tron rewatch plans, final recs (Reading Rainbow with Mychol the Librarian) Key Takeaways Mandalorian & Grogu looks like classic adventure cinema with modern polish, and the scale finally feels “Star Wars movie” again. House of the Dragon S3 needs payoff right away; A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms works best if it stays grounded and character-driven. Wolverine aims for weighty, tactile combat; villains like Omega Red can raise stakes by limiting healing. Peaky Blinders is set up for a strong WWII film handoff to a 1953 sequel series that explores post-war power shifts. The Simpsons Movie 2 needs a big, timely hook to justify the leap back to theaters. October TV is stacked, and It: Welcome to Derry has room to dig into the town-wide effects of Pennywise. Memorable Quotes “There's something about a Star Wars movie where the budget is just whatever they wanted to do.” “Make the season climb, then drop a theater-only battle movie the very next weekend.” “Star Wars tech feels bolted together in the best way. You can almost hear the click of every panel.” “He operates perfectly in the gray area where politics can't see.” “The best horror makes you think about it long after the scare.” Call to Action If you enjoyed this episode, follow and subscribe, rate us 5 stars, and share the show with a friend. Mike Colter's Luke Cage memories highlight the physicality and appeal of street-level MCU storytelling. Frank, Squeaks, and Thomas cover a packed week: dream casting for Netflix's BioShock movie, first takes on the Avengers Doomsday reveal out of Shanghai and what it signals for Doctor Doom in the MCU, Star Trek Day highlights and what the 60th anniversary year could look like, quick reactions to the 77th Emmys, why Warner Bros. Discovery is suing Midjourney, and fresh DCU talk after new Superman images and a 2027 date. We close with recommendations and a fast tour around the Geek Freaks Network. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 Welcome, mid-week vibes, and today's lineup 01:14 Question of the Week: BioShock movie casting picks for Andrew Ryan, Atlas, Jack, and Little Sisters 07:02 Con updates: CrackerCon appearances, SDC Town Hall, LA Comic Con plans 08:22 Avengers Doomsday first look: Doom's armor, magic tech blend, symbols, and power-level stakes 19:42 Star Trek Day roundup: Starfleet Academy, preschool series on YouTube, scripted Khan audio series, LEGO collab, 60th anniversary plans, Trek cruise, and the Skydance chatter 34:37 Emmys 77 reactions: Studio's comedy sweep, Hacks love, Severance kudos, Andor writing win, and Hannah Einbinder's speech 41:27 WB Discovery vs Midjourney: what the lawsuit argues, fair use vs training, and where fan art fits 51:42 Superman Saga update: 2027 date, new images, Lex team-ups, Brainiac theories, and what to avoid with multiverse fatigue 58:34 Quick hits to watch for next week: TikTok U.S. buyout deadline, Disney + Webtoon digital comics platform 58:59 Recommendations: Foundation, Borderlands 4, Dimension 20 and Critical Role hype 01:04:34 Around the Geek Freaks Network and sign-off Key Takeaways BioShock casting drew strong picks like Cillian Murphy for Andrew Ryan and Gerard Butler or James McAvoy for Atlas, with Ewan McGregor floated for an all-voice heavy Atlas. The Doomsday footage suggests a Doom who mixes sorcery and engineering. Runes, sigils, and visuals hint at a villain who can carry multiverse-level stakes. Star Trek is gearing up for a busy 60th year with new shows, a kids series on YouTube to hook the next generation, a scripted Khan audio drama, and a LEGO partnership. Emmys 77 landed well for comedy and recognized top craft like Andor's writing. Studio earned the “actual comedy” praise many fans were looking for. The Midjourney suit could set important lines around training on copyrighted works. The show breaks down the difference between commentary fair use and model training. DCU chatter points to Brainiac as the smart next-step foil that forces a Lex and Superman team-up, while keeping the multiverse in check. Community notes: Geek Freaks will be out at events, and the Network has new episodes across the slate. Quotes “It looks comic accurate. More than I thought it would be.” “They're really good at visual storytelling in the MCU. This is the next facet of that.” “Studio is what The Bear pretended to be for years.” “We're in the early stages of the law. You have to scrape the edges to shape something that makes sense.” “Can we just not do the multiverse? Let's stay in this universe.” Call to Action If you enjoyed this one, follow and subscribe, drop a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, and share the episode with a friend using #GeekFreaksPod. Big life/work update! I just hit send on a major application to Annecy's Residency for The Arbiters (our indie anime-style feature) — huge milestone and real momentum. Right after that… my old car tapped out, so I had to scramble for a new one in the middle of an already packed September. I'm also gearing up for a quick trip, moving from one place to another here in LA, and prepping for our LA Comic Con panel:LA Comic Con Panel: Indie Anime Meets Industry: The Bold Journey Behind The Arbiters — Sat, Sept 27 @ 5:00 PM, Room 407.Behind the scenes, The Arbiters keeps building steam. And I'm choosing to pause/slow down a bit — not a defeat, just a smart reprioritization. Sometimes we need grace and downtime anyway to keep doing our best creative work because life can be a lot sometimes. That's why I'm literally filming this on the drive to a screening of my short “5 Minute Film School” so I can make the most use of the drive. BTW, watch the short here: https://youtu.be/JrEj-W4Mg78?si=gVfS_5F_HLvqOLTsIf you're into indie filmmaking, animation, or just honest creator life updates, this one's for you.
Hey there, friends! This week my guests are Derek Hayes (Monster Among Us Podcast) and David Flora (Blurry Photos Podcast)! These two upstanding gents made a fantastic documentary, Shadows in the Desert: High Strangeness in the Borrego Triangle (2024). I really enjoyed this doc, so much so, that I needed to get these two fellow travels on the show right away!We discuss the documentary, without spoilers, and the many manifestations that this desert triangle has going for it: Bigfoot, UFOs, ghosts galore, and so much more! We also talk about some of their personal experience in the realm of the strange and unusual. I really admire what these two dudes did, and how they did it. I highly recommend checking out this film on TUBI, and likely some other streaming services. It's a good one! Love, Steve https://www.borregotriangle.com/where-to-streamDerek Hayes:Derek Hayes is the creator and host of award-winning podcast, Monsters Among Us, a collection of real paranormal stories told by the witnesses themselves. Hayes has also appeared on the Travel Channel series, In Search Of Monsters and Beyond Skinwalker Ranch, and spoken on panels at AlienCon, LA Comic Con, and Cryptid Con. Frank and Squeaks cover Paramount's massive week of moves after the Skydance merger, including a new UFC deal, a bigger theatrical slate, a push for family adventure movies, and fresh Star Trek film plans. They react to Greta Gerwig's Narnia set photos, talk through the young Rambo prequel casting, and share practical steps for Roblox safety that parents can use right now. Reviews land for Alien Earth and King of the Hill. Plus, Frank chats with Alex Austin about building a social platform out of a podcast app and what moderation and growth look like in 2025. Convention plans and network updates round it out. Timestamps and topics 00:00 Introduction and announcements 00:41 LA Comic Con plans September 26 to 28 and Crocker Con preview 02:13 Paramount and Skydance overview and why it matters 03:28 UFC rights to Paramount Plus with select cards on CBS and the TKO wrinkle 06:19 Theatrical strategy shift to more movies per year and why mid range films matter 07:24 Family adventure focus with Goonies vibes and what that could mean 08:48 Duffer Brothers heading to Paramount and hopes for new franchises 12:36 Two Star Trek films in development and creative teams 15:29 Narnia first look from Greta Gerwig and why starting with The Magician's Nephew works 19:23 Rambo prequel casting and the case for original action stories 27:28 Roblox safety concerns and simple parent safeguards that actually help 39:31 Reviews segment setup 40:03 Alien Earth first impressions, tone craft, and that practical suit 45:00 Why it feels like Fargo in space, pacing structure and synth lore 54:53 Scores for Alien Earth 55:05 King of the Hill revival thoughts and why it feels like a real continuation 01:01:49 Interview with Alex Austin on building a social platform for podcasters 01:02:24 Network news Challenge Accepted Outlast Distance Nerding Fandom Portals Anime Plus 01:03:08 Frank joins the Sacramento Developer Collective board, and what that means 01:03:58 Weekly recommendations: Red Sonja reading and Peacemaker podcast 01:07:01 Ninja Turtles anniversary note and wrap up Key takeaways Paramount is shifting from eight theatrical releases this year to a target of 15 to 20 per year, which can revive mid-budget comedies and adventures and help theaters thrive. Family adventure is a priority which fills a gap left by pure superhero focus and could broaden audience reach. Two Star Trek films are on deck, one tied to the Kelvin crew and one new project from Toby Haynes. Narnia starts with The Magician's Nephew, which makes the world feel fresh while connecting to classic imagery. The Rambo prequel raises a bigger question about when to create new action icons instead of reviving old ones. Roblox needs stronger safety guardrails, while parents can act now with private servers, whitelists, spending locks, and no random chats. Alien Earth blends practical effects with slow-burning world-building and earns a nine out of ten from both hosts. King of the Hill nails a modern continuation that honors the original and lands a perfect ten out of ten from Frank. Memorable quotes Squeaks on Paramount. Right now, they are not messing around Frank Family adventure feels like the missing lane, and it is a smart way to reach everyone Frank Alien Earth plays like Fargo in space, and I mean that as a compliment Frank, this new King of the Hill does not feel like a reboot, it feels like the next season Squeaks if you are not doing enough to protect kids other people will try, and that should be a wake-up call Call to action If you enjoy the show tap Follow or Subscribe in your podcast app. Leave a quick rating and review to help more geeks find us.
