Your mileage may vary, but James Wan's Malignant is definitely going to elicit some reaction from you!Wan is the most recent AAPI director we're highlighting this week, with a huge slew of horror and non-horror movies and a massive production company of his own in Atomic Monster, there are few genre directors with more influence...which is sort of the only reason I can imagine this movie got made at all.Recommendations:M3ganStar Trek: Strange New WorldsThese Fleeting ShadowsGunpowder MilkshakeNobodyRenfieldBanshees (from Scout Comics)John WickThe Seattle Underground (the actual place, not many of the other things probably named this in popular culture) ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

The Crew are all under the weather this episode and apparently so was Zoom as there were heaps of issues in regards to recording, but a great episode was still created to talk about a great book! Also, is it intentional or coincidental that the podcast has the same initials as the first names of the three hosts? The CDB Crew will never tell! No discussion this week due to the afore mentioned illnesses but it's a solid episode nonetheless with some great tangents about Covid and Booster Gold to name a few. Show Notes: This episode is one of my shorter ones, and for this mini-sode my cats Jarael and Lena decided to visit me in the Batcave while I worked. I recently got in a new mic and wanted to give it a test drive. I figured while I was recording I could share some MSCA news and let you know what Nicki and I have been up to lately. Thanks to Peter Rios for the shout-out on his "The Daily Rios" podcast. He mentions my show on TDR Ep. 503 during his conversation with Dave Dwonch, as well as playing my "Drawing Funny" promo spot- thanks, Peter! I've got two comics conversations scheduled for this week and will be bringing those to you as soon as I can. Other books discussed on this episode are Jenny Zero #1-2 (Dark Horse) by Dave Dwonch, Brock McKinney and Magenta King; Mochi by Gemma Gene; and Mamo #1 (Boom Box) by Sas Milledge. This week the Savants discuss the current events, try to put our own spin on some truly horrific events. Then we pivot right into dumb jokes and nerd foolery. Grant is excited about a rocket his boss fired, Brian dips his toes into the comic buying world, and the Zorb makes his kids watch a 90 minute silent French film. All that, plus HBO Max..This episode is brought to you by Mind Palace a webcomic from Dave Dwonch.

This week I had an awesome chat with writer Dave Dwonch.  His work includes Prom of the Dead and the new webcomic, Mind Palace, which creates a singular universe of all of Bryan Fuller’s TV creations, including Hannibal.  Dave has an abundance of stories and we just scratch the surface in this conversation. I definitely want to get him back on the show to talk some more. Dave can be found online at OutOfMind.co.  You can find Mind Palace at MindPalaceComic.com and you can purchase Prom of the Dead at BehomethComics.us.   In other news, past guest Mike Garley has returned to Kickstarter for a one-shot digital comic called Our Final Halloween.  At the time of this recording, he’s only a few days in with over 100 backers and about halfway to the funding goal.   In our penultimate episode, Dave Dwonch pops by to talk about his zillions of projects, having heart surgery, Star Wars and whiskey! We also briefly touch on Infinity War (again without spoiling; we're getting good at that!) Chaos reigns supreme as Brandon & Travis of Interdimensional RSS: The Unofficial Rick & Morty Podcast join us for tons of Rick and Morty related shenanigans. We chat about our favourite episodes and quotes, I recount my slightly embarrassing meet and greet with Keith David, and we introduce Barry to Justin Roiland's Hilarity For Charity animated sketch...! This means they will be put out as close to their live versions as possible, including (but not limited to); audio delays and the resultant accidentally-talking-over-each-other, bodily function noises (aka the World's Loudest Sneezes), slightly-too-long sections in which we try to deal with the mountain of technical problems on the day... I believe they are still very enjoyable though, and I hope you have as much fun listening in as Barry & I did when broadcasting!

The Joy of Comics Podcast, Episode 16: Interview with Dave Dwonch from Action Lab Comics On this very special episode of The Joy of Comics podcast, we (Rich, Jordan and Kevin) sit down with Dave Dwonch - a comics writer and executive who lives and works on the frontlines of the indpendent comics scene. As a founding member of Action Lab Comics - as well as its President of Marketing and Development - Dave has some fascinating insights to offer about the current state of indpendent publishing, and when we were offered the opportunity to interview him for a panel at this year's NC Comicon - Oak City, we jumped at the chance. In addition to helping to run Action Lab, Dave is also a comics writer who has become more and more prolific in recent years. Most recently, he scripted a supernatural murder mystery series entitled Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxicab, and he has a new book coming out soon with friend and collaborator Brockton McKinney called Party Monster, which looks to be his most exciting and groundbreaking work yet. We talk about these titles and so much more, and learn what the future holds for himself and for Action Lab. So join us for an inside look at the trials, tribulations and triumphs of creating indpendent comics, as we interview one of the freshest voices in the industry. This...is the Joy of Comics! *Special thanks to NC Comicon and Action Lab for making this panel possible. You can also find Kevin's previous interview with Dwonch, click here.

Jeremy is joined by Dave Dwonch.  Publisher of Action Labs Comics.  They discuss Indie Comics, creativity, pro wrestling and California Real estate. The Action Lab is a group of mad scientists who collectively have over 25 years of comic book creating experience.  After slaving in obscurity and alone for lo, these many years, these quasi-evil geniuses have now gathered together from around the globe to form a secret research and development collective devoted to world domination through the purification of the comic book art form.  The Action Lab has sworn to use its powers for a single purpose — to bring the world the most action packed, most thought-provoking, most entertaining comics available, thereby ushering in a new age of world peace under the dominating yet benign control of the Action Lab.   Their first major release, FRACTURE, was released in July 2011 followed by the now two-time Eisner nominated and five-time Glyph nominated PRINCELESS in October 2011. Action Lab continues to publish genre spanning comics from the all-ages MONSTERS ARE JUST LIKE US, and mature reader books like SNOWED IN and DOUBLE JUMPERS.   Action Lab Entertainment is the public front for all the activities of the Action Lab and its members.  Although most of the Action Lab’s activities remain classified, Action Lab Entertainment can disclose that two of its many functions are the marketing of comic books through various sales outlets, and the expansion of their domination into other mediums. If you have the opportunity to interface with any Action Lab personnel at a comic book show or other event, please approach with caution, but feel free to purchase any of the fine comic book products which may be available.

The Two Guys with PhDs Talking about Comics return with their 2013 Halloween Special! In this episode, Gene and Derek discuss a variety of this year's Halloween special issues, very recent horror titles, and series annuals themed to the season. (We know, we know…Halloween Classics: Graphic Classics, Vol. 23 came out in 2012, but we weren't able to discuss this book last year, so we wanted to be sure we did so this time around.) They cover a lot of ground, highlighting as many new Halloween titles as they can, recommending most with a severed thumbs up. The titles they discuss include: Halloween Classics: Graphic Classics, Vol. 23, by various artists (Eureka Productions); Afterlife with Archie, by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla (Archie Comics); Adventure Time 2013 Spooktacular, by various artists (Kaboom!); Herobear and the Kid 2013 Annual, by Mike Kunkel (Kaboom!); Hellraiser 2013 Annual, by Clive Barker, Brandon Siefert, Ben Meares, Jesús Hervás, and Janusz Ordon (Boom! Studios); Grimm Fairy Tales 2013 Halloween Special, various artists (Zenescope Entertainment); Vampirella Halloween Special 2013, by Shannon Eric Denton and Dietrich Smith (Dynamite); The Mocking Dead #1-2, by Fred Van Lente and Max Dunbar (Dynamite); The Walking Dead: 10th Anniversary Edition, by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Dave Stewart (Image); The Walking Dead #115, by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Ablard (Image); Zombie Tramp, Vol. 2 #1, by Dan Mendoza (Action Lab); Vamplets, Vol. 1, by Gayle Middleton, Dave Dwonch, Amanda Coronado, and Bill Blankenship (Action Lab); Zombillenium, by Arthur De Pins (NBM); Boo! Halloween Stories, by various artists (MonkeyBrain). So put on your favorite homemade costume, slap on a little ghoulish greasepaint, grab your pumpkin head bucket, walk like a zombie, and enjoy the sweet, nougaty treats (no tricks here) of The Comics Alternative 2013 Halloween Special!
