Dr. Drea Letamendi (she/her/ella) is a clinical psychologist, media consultant, and TEDx speaker with degrees and training from Cornell University, UCSD, and UCLA. Dr. Drea is a practitioner-educator based in Los Angeles and holds a Masters and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. At UCLA, she serves as a campus mental health and wellbeing consultant leading resilience, crisis-response, and suicide prevention initiatives. She manages a private practice as a behavioral health advisor for the gaming, visual effects, and entertainment media industries (with clients including Warner Bros., Marvel/Disney, and Lionsgate). By way of social media and podcasting, Dr. Drea uses storytelling in film, television, gaming, and comics to teach audiences about resilience, cultural healing and liberation psychology. She created and hosts The Arkham Sessions, a podcast about the psychology of superheroes and other pop culture narratives. She has written publications about the positive impacts of media storytelling on mental health, and her latest publication is titled, The Force Awakens: Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Using Star Wars. In this episode, we explore the world of fictional characters and the connection to psychology and mental health. From superheroes to villains, we uncover how these characters can offer a sense of belonging, a mirror to our own struggles, and a way to process personal trauma. We discuss how storytelling allows us to confront our own experiences and how these characters often reflect the most vulnerable parts of ourselves. We also also touch on why horror stories can bring comfort and a sense of cathartic relief for certain people, and the psychology behind rewatching our favorite comfort shows and movies as a way to ease anxiety. Overall, we share an insightful conversation about the psychological impact of fiction and how connecting with these characters can be a powerful tool for healing and self-discovery. *I am currently accepting new clients virtually in California. Why does this show resonate so well at this time? Panelists include Robert A. Dagnall (MA candidate in Rhetoric and Writing Studies / instructor, SDSU), J. With Justice League burning up the box office, we've united the Classics Crew to share their favorite Justice League-related moments in DC TV history. Nick recounts the time Lex Luthor and The Flash switched bodies -- which was very meta, considering Michael Rosenbaum has played both characters. Britney revisits the Christmas-themed "Comfort and Joy" episode and Desiree shouts out the Double Date episode with Green Arrow, Black Canary, The Question and Huntress. Finally, Keith brings up Smallville (again) and special guest Dr. Andrea Letamendi -- from the Arkham Sessions podcast -- remembers the classic JLU episode "Epilogue." In celebration of her 25th anniversary, Harley Quinn fittingly takes over the annual "Batman Day" this year. Here at The Arkham Sessions, we did what we do best: Analyze the most relevant animated Batman stories. This time, we watched the new DC Animated film, BATMAN AND HARLEY QUINN. Though the story itself is straightforward and the character build-out flimsy, we were able to extract some of the most pertinent issues related to mental health and psychology. For instance, in defense of her sanity, Harley asserts that she is a "sociopath," not a "psychopath." What does she mean by this? Is she correct? And does Batman buy it? And were female characters, prominent throughout the movie, given fair portrayals in the story?    We also diligently searched for the heart of the movie and, with the help of one of our friends and loyal listeners--Lauren Ritchie (@penguingonemad)--, we discussed why Harley Quinn is uniquely special to us as a character in comics: Her genuine, authentic expression of herself, her willingness to accept her own flaws, and her determination to remain free of constraints and limitations.     Happy Harley Day!

The Arkham Sessions: Psychology of Batman & More

In this episode of The Arkham Sessions, we meet a classic Batman villain for the first (and last) time; we explore the development of stalking behavior through the narrative of Cassidy, a rising pop star; we dive into the "types" of stalkers; and we describe concrete factors that increase the risk of stalking violence. Listen now for the full analysis!

The Arkham Sessions: Psychology of Batman & More

Robin learns a tough lesson when he disobeys Batman and goes on his own to pursue a mysterious case involving a young, lost girl by the name of Annie. In this episode of The Arkham Sessions, we explore the notion of "personhood" and identity development. First, how do we define a person? What characteristics must one have in order to be considered a sentient being? Reviewing various definitions of personhood and sentience, we ponder where Annie fits by reviewing the criteria: Is she self-aware? Intelligent? Has the freedom to choose? If she has the moral right of personhood, then should Robin have given her a chance to live apart from Clayface?  Listen to the episode below for our full analysis of this unique Batman episode!
