Many a man has been impressed by the ingenuity of secret agent operations, and intrigued by the subterfuge, gadgets, and disguises required to pull them off. Much of what we think about when we think about spies got its start as part of the Office of Strategic Services, the American intelligence agency during World War II.Here to unpack some of the history of the world of cloak and dagger operations is John Lisle, author of The Dirty Tricks Department: Stanley Lovell, the OSS, and the Masterminds of World War II Secret Warfare. Today on the show, Lisle explains why the OSS was created and the innovations its research and development section came up with to fight the Axis powers. We talk about the most successful weapons and devices this so-called “Dirty Tricks Department” developed, as well as its more off-the-wall ideas, which included releasing bat bombs and radioactive foxes in Japan. We discuss the department's attempt to create a truth serum, its implementation of a disinformation campaign involving “The League of Lonely War Women,” and its promotion of a no-holds-barred hand-to-hand combat fighting system. We also talk about the influence of the OSS on the establishment of the CIA and controversial projects like MKUltra.Resources Related to the PodcastWilliam “Wild Bill” DonovanOffice of Strategic ServicesWilliam FairbairnTime pencil“Aunt Jemima” explosiveLimpet mineThe bat bombJohn's article on Operation Fantasia's radioactive foxesAoM Article: 15 Cool Spy ConcealmentsAoM Podcast #225: The Real Life James BondAoM Article: The History of Invisible InkAoM Article: Why Men Love the Story of the Great EscapeConnect With John LisleJohn on TwitterJohn's website

World War II was a time of technological marvels and revolutionary new weaponry that changed the world as we know it. However, one military project stands alone as perhaps the nuttiest (and brutally effective) plan ever devised. Gluing bombs to thousands of bats and just letting 'er rip. Alright lads, this week we are commemorating the 75th Anniversary of V-J Day by looking at World War 2 from a more obscure angle. We're marking the occasion by discussing failed weapons & successful missions. In particular The Great Panjandrum. Lyttle Adams infamous Bat Bombs. Operation Frankton & the mind boggling brilliance of Operation Mincemeat.
Have you ever seen a movie trailer, or an item for sale on tv, or just pass by something in the store, and thought to yourself, "Wow, someone along the line during creation of this thing really should have said no to the idea and put a stop to it?" I know I have! (The movie "Monster Trucks, am I right?) The same applies to weapons. You won't believe the kind of weapons that have actually been made by humans. This week, we discuss just two of them, bat bombs and the Davy Crockett, in this first part of an intermittent series of dumb decisions by humans. If you've ever played Fallout and have heard of the nuka-nuka, then you may or may not know it's a digital recreation of the Davy Crockett. Great for video games, not so much for real world application. But first, we discuss current-ish events. Did China accidentally release the Covid-19 virus?Conspiracists certainly seem to think so, but there's no solid evidence. Then Jennifer rants about the Battle of the Alamo, and was Davy Crockett there? Neither of us remember. Do you? So, put on your weird hats, join our cult of weirdness, and listen to another riveting episode. You're probably in quarantine or some sort of isolation anyways (like us), so you might as well give us a listen!Follow us on Twitter @betterthanhuma1on Facebook @betterthanhumanpodcaston Instagram @betterthanhumanpodcastEmail us at betterthanhumanpodcast@gmail.com or check out our website betterthanhumanpodcast.comWe look forward to hearing from you, and we look forward to you joining our cult of weirdness#betterthanhuman #cultofweirdnessAlso, Jennifer's a creep, but it's okay.

Despite sounding like something Batman would use, bat bombs were a very real thing that the army (and later navy) experimented with during World War II. They were the brainchild of Dr. Lytle S. Adams who was in Carlsbad Caverns when the war broke out, looked around him and said, "Well these tiny flying things look like they might be able to win the war." They weren't. But it's an interesting story anyway. It sounds like something straight out of the cave beneath Bruce Wayne's Manor, but thanks to the passion of a part-time inventor named Lytle Adams, the United States military really did spend millions attempting to arm bats with incendiary devices and launch them -- real-life bat bombs -- across Japanese cities. Here's the weird thing: It could have actually worked. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
