In this episode we talk to two of BBC Radio Northampton's Presenters to discover the story of the Beasley brothers who both played sport for Northamptonshire before serving on the Western Front in the Great War. We look at how Joe Beasley's path crossed with Ronald Poulton-Palmer, the England rugby captain who was killed at Ypres. And we discover the story of another soldier who played first class cricket having lost a leg in the war.
Walter Tull was one of Britain's first black army officers and was killed in action in March 1918. He was also one of the first black professional footballers, appearing for Tottenham and Northampton Town. His incredible story, from orphan to war hero, is told in this podcast by BBC Radio Northampton's Graham McKechnie, who has discovered a connection between Tull and another black sportsman who played for Northampton Saints RFC.
Georgia Francis' granddad William, or Bill, McKim represented Great Britain in the 1,500m at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. But his fourth placed finish in the heats - narrowly missing out on a place in the finals despite suffering from an illness which should have prevented him competing - doesn't tell his full story. Not long after the event he beat eventual winner Peter Snell of New Zealand, and a year later he ran a sub-four minute mile - just seven years after Sir Roger Bannister had done so for the first time. He went on to repeat the feat a year later, before turning his attention to marathons and completing the New York event in two hours 35 minutes. In later life, Bill went on to climb Everest twice and hike the Inca Trail - something Georgia repeated years later, standing on the same spot he did to overlook Machu Picchu and making an emotional call to him back in England. Bill has since sadly passed away, but in this episode we talk to Georgia about how he was always destined to be a runner and why he nearly didn't got to Tokyo at all... ---------------------------------- Click here to listen to William McKim talking to BBC Radio Northampton in 2021

Terry Angus arrived at The Cobblers at the age of 24, in 1990. Signed by Arsenal and Cobblers legend, Theo Foley, Angus went on to play 116 times for Northampton Town. His 3 year stay culminating in that 3-2 win at Shrewsbury Town which kept Town in the Football League by the skin of their teeth. 20 years later, Terry was to make a name for himself with Cobblers fans once more. This time behind the microphone as part of the BBC Radio Northampton commentary team at Anfield in 2010. Danny and Charles chat to Terry about his journey to becoming a professional footballer, his experiences of arriving at a very poor football club in Northampton, his relationships with his managers and the fans and the important topic of racism. _________________________ Support the show If you'd like to support the podcast, we'd really appreciate it. 25 years on from Northampton Town's first visit to Wembley Stadium - and our first win there - in the Division 3 Play Off Final, It's All Cobblers To Me speaks to some of the legends of that era. While 32,000 Cobblers fans were inside Wembley, there were still many back home in Northamptonshire. All trying to keep up to date with what was happening at the game. The easiest way for most, as is the case still today, was to turn on the radio and tune into 104.2 or 103.6 FM for BBC Radio Northampton and hear Mike Sewell's commentary of the game. Despite having gone on to commentate and report on the Premier League, Champions League and World Cups, Mike still hails that day watching the Cobblers as his defining moment. In this episode, Mike chats to Charles about life as a local sports reporter for the BBC, the squad that Ian Atkins assembled and what it was like to commentate on one of The Cobblers' most famous goals in their history. Thanks to BBC Radio Northampton for allowing us to use Mike's commentary. So sit back and reminisce with one of our heroes ahead of the Wembley Anniversary event that we're hosting on May 20th.https://www.ntfc.co.uk/commercial/125/ ( Click here for ticket details.) 27th September 2020 saw Keith Skues hit the stab on Mr Tambourine Man for the final time, as his 500th show marked the end of his broadcasting career at the BBC, aged 81. As he previewed some of the songs to come, he conceded that he might not fit them all in. Last shows can be like that. Other choice moments included: “Are you familiar with a gentleman called Tim Davie?” “Keith: ‘Why should I be?” His 60-year career included: the British Forces Network in Cologne; pirate radio on board Caroline and London; BBC Radio 1 at its launch; programme director of Radio Hallam; and a long spell in BBC Local Radio. His farewell show was broadcast across local radio in the East of England across BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, BBC Essex, BBC Radio Lincolnshire, BBC Radio Norfolk, BBC Radio Northampton, BBC Radio Suffolk and BBC Three Counties Radio. Ten minutes before the end, hear him express his regret for never finding a wife. Anyone who knows how Keith works know how well he prepares each show. There are moments here he clearly couldn’t.

There's plenty of talk about politics at the moment - with a good deal of it being how "we've heard it all before," "it's boring" or "I've had enough of it". The truth is those talking heads you see and hear every day can get a bit draining, but there is something you may want to remember. Politics is about who looks after our hospitals, our armed forces, our roads and infrastructure, the treatment of your children and ageing parents, and, dare I say it, whether or not we leave the European Union. Interested now? Perhaps you should be? If you are, this preview of BBC Radio Northampton's hustings debate for Northampton North may be of interest. Conservative Michael Ellis, Labour's Sally Keeble, Liberal Democrat Martin Sawyer and the Green Party's Katherine Pate clashed over Brexit, the NHS, austerity, Northamptonshire County Council and more... ** The full debate will be played out between 7-8pm tonight (Thursday, November 28) on BBC Radio Northampton **
People may have watched the ITV clash between Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson earlier this week. But on the same night BBC Northampton held its very own -far more important - debate between the parliamentary candidates for Corby & East Northamptonshire. Conservative Tom Pursglove, Labour's Beth Miller and Liberal Democrat Chris Stanbra took part in the event at Corby Cube's The Lab. The subject soon turned to Brexit, but there was still time for the candidates to clash over the NHS, living in Corby, childcare and austerity... ** The full debate will be played out between 7-8pm tonight (Thursday, November 21) on BBC Radio Northampton **

Serious and organised crime, child abuse, rape and sexual violence, preventing road fatalities, residential burglary and domestic abuse; it's a comprehensive list of the most serious crimes in the county. It is a comprehensive piece of work put together by my colleague Elinor Cross. As part of the project, I spoke to Northamptonshire Police's Paul Rymarz. Detective Superintendent Rymarz's officers dealt with 780 rapes and 1,300 other sexual offences last year. From hospital radio to a leading role in a fast-changing commercial sector and then back on-air with the BBC, Stuart Linnell’s fifty years of radio make a fascinating story of sport, music presentation and management in a colourful radio age. In this hour of ‘RadioMoments Conversations’, Stuart tells of his early days at BBC Radio Birmingham, before moving to commercial radio to help launch Radio Hallam. A transfer to the new Mercia Sound followed, where he rose to PD and then an ever- growing Managing Director role. He tells of the characters in commercial radio’s early days and the successes and frustrations of the earliest steps in industry consolidation. Back on-air at the BBC, Stuart reflects on Auntie’s changes over the decades and on his final lengthy spell at BBC Radio Northampton. In his own words, this is the story of Stuart Linnell MBE. Fascinated by the new local commercial station in his home town of Bradford in the ‘70s, Roger was eager to play his part in that young Pennine Radio. The BBC then swiftly called, taking him first to Lincolnshire and then to BBC Radio Northampton, where his voice delivered the station’s first news bulletin. In this edition of ‘Conversations’, Roger Mosey tells of his rise through the BBC ranks, from Editorship of PM and Today through to heading BBC 5 Live, running the highly-regarded Olympics coverage and taking his place around the BBC top table in what turned out to be its most challenging spell. Speaking from his new home, as the Master of Selwyn College, Cambridge, this is the Roger Mosey story - in his own words. Roger’s book ‘Getting Out Alive’ is an insightful read - and available now, published by Biteback.
