This week we are joined by the economist, award-winning author, and top Australian player, GM David Smerdon. David is a professor at the University of Queensland. With a statistical background, David is a particular expert in the intersection of statistics and chess and is frequently able to combine his chess expertise with his academic research. Since chess cheating has been in the news again, we begin by getting David's thoughts on the renewed allegations against GM Hans Niemann, as well as the recent concerns about rampant online cheating voiced by GM Vladimir Kramnik. David drew some interesting comparisons between these cheating scandals and a recent one in the academic world. David also had some recently published chess research to discuss, as he and a team of collaborators have recently launched the “Gender Equality in Chess Index. (GECI)” What is the goal of his index and how did they arrive at the numbers? Lastly, we catch up on David's chess career. As David details, he doesn't have a ton of time to study, but is competing when he can with a specific goal in mind. Happy Thursday HPP Family!!The team went full throttle in July and recorded 5 shows. We loved all of them as we had football star Travis Kelce, recording artist Trevor Hall, author and Gulf War veteran Bob Taylor on talking about his new book “From Service to Success”. These are all great shows and we know you will love listening to them. We will be releasing these shows throughout August leading up to our NFL pre-season show with George the first week of September. This NFL HPP season is lining up to be very special. Of all of the shows we have recorded we chose to open the month of August with Yanti Amos, the Yogi-Ninja. Yanti and her story cross over so many interests and story lines that we believe everyone will enjoy it. Born in Australia to Indonesian parents, Yanti eventually became an international business lawyer working globally from countries in Asia as well as Europe. She was successful, making money, and thought she was living the life of her dreams. But a funny thing happened along the way. She woke up, literally. She was involved in an accident that left her laid up and forced her to take time off from work. In the space this provided she realized this was not the life she wanted and she was not the person she wanted to be. She left the practice of law and based on yoga sessions she experienced during her rehab, she got certified as a yoga instructor and within 6 years opened her own yoga studio in New York. From there the story takes some additional twists and turns eventually leading her to a black belt in karate, selling the studio, and then working fulltime with her husband in teaching Karate all over the world (as well as yoga through the Warrior Flow School). Please enjoy her humor, her wit, her resiliency, and her passion. Side note, in 2018 George and Bruce were in New York and attended a yoga class at Yanti's hot yoga studio!! Small world indeed. Enjoy the show and let's get pumped up for the 2023-24 NFL season!! Emma & Bruce-------Yanti Amos - https://www.yantiamos.comDonation Information: 1. Rooks and pawns and bishops, oh my! This week Amanda and Wade welcome Kate Mulder to discuss The Queen of Katwe. On this episode of Recommend or Refute, Dixon dishes the deets on the screwball comedy Ball of Fire (1941), John talks about da famous Soady Family buck huntin' of Jeff Daniels's Upper (You-pper) comedy Escanaba in da Moonlight (2001), and Ryan explains why Queen of Katwe (2016) puts Queen's Gambit (2020) in check (we know, we know --that's a mildly apples to oranges comparison).

Chess 4 Life An incredible conversation today with Elliot Neff about Chess. You may think of chess as just a game but as I've learnt today, it's much more! Through Elliot's journey in playing chess and becoming a Chess Master, he went on to develop a program to help children excel in life. Elliot and the team and Chess4Life have developed programs to help make a positive impact on the lives of 1 million kids each week. Elliot shares the educational mindset and life skills that chess can teach. Amazing! Pick up a copy of Elliots book, A Pawns Journey, using this link. Guest Bio. Elliott Neff is a National Master in Chess, author of A Pawn's Journey (October 2018), and CEO of Chess4Life, which exists to help kids develop life skills through the game of chess. What began for Elliott as a childhood fascination with chess has blossomed into an opportunity to positively impact tens of thousands of kids per week through Chess4Life programs, and a vision of impacting 1 million youth per week. Elliott's coaching expertise is reflected in his certification as a USCF Level V Coach, an honor that fewer than a dozen top level coaches in the US share. Elliott's work is endorsed by many, including: Grandmaster Varuzhan Akobian Mary Miller, co-creator of The Dream Manager program Robert Katende, Founder and Director of SOM Chess Academy in Uganda, coach to Phiona Mutesi of the Queen of Katwe. Elliott is a husband, father, entrepreneur, and author.
We wrap up our Sports series with Mira Nair's 2016 film ‘Queen of Katwe.' We return to Nair after talking about ‘Salaam Bombay!' in our Coming of Age Debuts series. How does this one compare? How does it fit in the world of sports? And does it reach farther than most biopics?
Mira Nair seemed the perfect director to bring the true story of Phiona Mutesi to the big screen. She started her career with Salaam Bombay!, looking at the lives of children growing up in Mumbai in the late 80s. She lived in Uganda where the story took place. So when she was asked to be a part of it, it was an easy ‘yes' from her. And luckily, with her clout and background, she was able to convince the producers and Disney, the distributor, that she should film it in the slum of Katwe where the story took place. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our Sports series with nair's 2016 fim Queen of Katwe. Queen of Katwe is a biopic with heart and authenticity. We both enjoy chess though neither of us are great at it. And we both enjoy films about chess. So why did we both miss this in theatres? Did it seem like a fairly standard biopic? Or like a TV movie? Unfortunately, we weren't alone as the film didn't make money at the box office. But that doesn't speak to the quality of the film. Yes, it feels like a fairly straightforward biopic, but it feels authentic. That speaks to Nair's drive to make it as real as possible. Film in the real locations where it took place. Cast non-actors to play the parts. And it works. With only Lupita Nyong'o and David Oyelowo as the stars in the film, it feels like it's born of this world. And that's even with Disney working as the guiding force. Of course it does mean that talk of prostitution is kept vague and to a minimum. Poverty rings true but never feels as raw as it did in Salaam Bombay!. Even an introductory set-up scene from the end of the film sets the world of chess up for us unnecessarily. But do these things affect the story? Only a little. This is a more positive, uplifiting story by nature so to a certain extent, the focus doesn't hurt it much. Nair expertly works with her non-actor child stars, notably Madina Nalwanga as the lead playing Phiona, the chess champ. She's a revelation and brings incredible life to the story. We buy into everything. She deserves to be here and carries the film on her back. The other kids equally carry their roles. It's a touching family film that opens the world of Uganda and chess to anyone watching it. We feel these characters' journeys. In the end, it does feel like a biopic, but it's a strong one that warms the heart. We have a great time talking about it on the show so check it out then tune in. This week's episode of Phoenix Tales contains descriptions and discussion of sexual abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is advised. In today's episode, Yuliana is joined by Gina de la Chesnaye, who shares her phoenix tale of surviving parental sexual abuse to become a humanitarian worker with traumatized communities. In her work, Gina draws on her own painful past to teach these communities how not only to survive their traumas but to thrive beyond the boundaries set by their experiences. She is founder and director of The Nachan Project, an NGO that brings mindfulness-based practices to the women and children living in the Katwe and Kisenyi slums of Kampala, Uganda. Gina opens the conversation by discussing the sexual abuse she experienced at the hands of her father from the age of eleven. She speaks about burying those memories until they resurfaced after her father's death and recognizing the ripple effects of his abuse on her lifestyle and relationships. She also reflects on mothering as a trauma survivor, how her experiences shaped her parenting, and the importance of breaking intergenerational cycles of abuse, including by caring for her father at the end of his life and discussing her trauma with her daughters. Gina then shares how practicing Buddhism and yoga have allowed her to use her body as a tool and resource for regulating her nervous system and emotions and gain a different perspective on her trauma. She also speaks about using that perspective to share skills and tools with other survivors, particularly in her work with women and children living in the slums of Uganda. Finally, the episode closes with Gina choosing her future self as the one person throughout time she would like the chance to sit down with, to thank her for inspiring her. Episode Highlights: The challenging events that have redirected the course of Gina's life Suffering sexual abuse at the hands of her father Unlocking buried memories after her father's death The ripple effects of experiencing abuse Recreating a pattern of dysregulation in her adult relationships Mothering as a trauma survivor Breaking intergenerational cycles of abuse Practicing Buddhism Putting her experiences in a different perspective through sharing practice Feeling free after her father's death Discovering her daughter's sexual abuse Working with abused women and children in the Katwe slums of Kampala, Uganda One person Gina would go back in time to sit with Quotes: “We're in so much pain, we don't know how to handle it, we're children. And so we hide it. And there's also a lot of shame. And I think that if more and more people talked about it, which they're starting to do, people like myself would have been able to find help.” “He was, you know, he was my father, and I adored him. And that's why it's so, so difficult, especially for survivors of incest. The person that you love is the one that tends to hurt you the most. That's incredibly confusing and painful, and it's an utter form of betrayal.” “I had a lot of anger, and I took it out often by, like, hitting doors or walls. I never hurt anyone else. Still, to this day, I use my anger to fuel me to help other people.” “When you're consistently dysregulated, let's say working with a lot of anxiety or depression, or if you're working with anxiety and depression all in the course of one day, those are usually the effects of having a nervous system that's been tweaked by traumatic events.” “A lot of people that I've worked with, even including myself, the concept of being happy is so unfamiliar, and we're not used to it, that we can sometimes push that away, because our nervous system is just like, 'what is that?'” “Even now, to this day, as a woman and as a survivor of sexual abuse, I am enraged that it still happens, and I'm enraged that my children have to deal with it. And there's nothing I can do about it.” “I recognized as well that it wasn't just that I was breaking intergenerational...

In Episode 148, I converse with Phiona Mutesi, who represented Uganda at four Women's Chess Olympiads, and is one of the first titled female players in Ugandan chess history. Mutesi is the subject of a 2012 book and a 2016 film called Queen of Katwe. She is the founder of the Phiona Mutesi Foundation. We speak about her upbringing in Uganda, dynamics between girls and boys in chess, a compare and contrast of she and Elizabeth Harmon of the Queen's Gambit, her life in the United States, her plans after her upcoming graduation and more.
Today's episode features the incredibly humble and generous Phiona Mutesi. From living in the streets in the slums of Katwe to learning chess in a Sports Outreach Institute missionary program to becoming one of her nation's top chess players competing in international competitions, Phiona Mutesi has come a long way from the 9-year old girl who came for a cup of porridge. The subject of the Disney movie “The Queen of Katwe,” Phiona is an inspiration to millions, and especially to girls in a nation where girls are particularly marginalized. Phiona is dedicated to using her platform to elevate African souls by providing education and supplies through her work with the Sports Outreach Institute Chess Academy and the Mutesi Phiona Foundation. In preparation for our discussion on "The Queen's Gambit", Aaron White of Feelin' Film and I (Paul Keelan) went on a bender with chess movies. In under a week's span, we both watched "Pawn Sacrifice," "Searching for Bobby Fischer," "The Coldest Game," "Queen of Katwe," and "Computer Chess" (on top of "The Queen's Gambit" miniseries). After this whirlwind of research, it quickly dawned upon the both of us that the content stored in our brains would inspire way too much dialogue to fit into a single podcast discussion. Thus, we decided to create extra-special 'chess extravaganza' episode so that we could dissect this eclectic selection of chess films and the sub-genre at-length. Moving at a rapid-fire pace—as fast as a game of speed chess—we talk about everything from Toby Maguire's odd portrayal of Bobby Fischer, to the poignant focus on parenting in "Searching for Bobby Fischer," to the idiosyncratic & polarizing curio that is "Computer Chess" (Beware: it is not (I repeat it is not!) a documentary about computers playing chess). We also outline the various tropes common to chess films: including the themes of madness, addiction, paranoia, Washington Sq. Park, and Cold War / Soviet vs. US politics that pervade nearly all of these movies. Finally, Aaron and I both rank all of these chess films (with "The Queen's Gambit" included in the mix): separating once and for all the blundering pawns from the promotable queens to-be. One of the more succinct Cinematic Underdogs episodes to date, this episode packs a ton of insights and canny commentary that you will not want to miss. Enjoy!
On this episode, Ashley, Melony, and Neecie discuss upcoming MCU and Disney+ news, WandaVision episodes 7 and 8, Queen of Katwe vs The Queens Gambit. The Disney question of the day is: If you could be any Disney character, but you cannot alter their circumstances in anyway, who would you be? Ronald Kabuye grew up in the Katwe slums of Kampala, Uganda, scavenging for food and trying to sell scrap metal for cash. One day in the street he saw a performance by the M-Lisada marching band, a group made up of children from a local orphanage. Ronald was enthralled. He joined the band, took up the trombone, and learned to read music. Performing gave him an escape and ultimately the opportunity to travel the world and play with some of the world's most influential musicians. Ronald is now a music teacher for the charity Brass for Africa. One of his pupils is Sumayya Nabakooza, who has overcome tough opposition to become one of very few female tuba players in Africa.
