Smith's How Not to Be Secular by looking at Chapter 2 and the process of how the world went from a belief in the transcendent to buffered "immanentization" - that is, "the process whereby meaning, significance, and 'fullness' are sought within an enclosed, self-sufficient, naturalistic universe without any reference to transcendence - a kind of 'enclosure.'" They also look at how these shifts happen primarily at the level of aesthetics (i.e., taste, imagination) rather than logically. In the 1960s, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby began creating comic book storylines that were interconnected in a shared universe and told a single story through many individual stories. In the early twenty-first century, that's what Marvel Studios decided to do through the films that became the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first of these films was released in 2008. Now—eleven years and twenty-two films later—all of these storylines have culminated in a single film, Avengers: Endgame. In this special episode of Three Chords and the Truth, Garrick Bailey and Timothy Paul Jones take a careful look at Avengers: Endgame. The resulting discussion covers everything from humanity's inescapable yearning for a metanarrative to the philosophical foundations that undergird the ethics of Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. A bizarre link between the Infinity Gauntlet and the bones of the sixteenth-century nun Teresa de Jesus also makes an appearance. This week's question from the Infinity Gauntlet pits Sting—the elven blade borne by Bilbo and Frodo—against Mjolnir, the mythical hammer carried by Thor. Subscribe to Three Chords and the Truth: The Apologetics Podcast: Apple / Android / RSS. Questions to Discuss 1. What does the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe tell us about ourselves and about the stories we tell? 2. How specifically does Avengers: Endgame elicit an awareness of the goodness of God’s creation? 3. In this film, what is it that’s broken and fallen that the heroes are seeking to repair?  4. How does Avengers: Endgame intersect with a biblical understanding of redemption? 5. Are there any places in Avengers: Endgame that we glimpse fragments of God’s truth about the end of time? She lies to god about laughing which is a big mistake. Next, we head to Sodom and Abe stops god before he leaves. He argues with God and attempts to jew him out of a good time. After pinky swearing to Abe that he wouldn't destroy the city if he found 10 righteous men in it. The Angels get taken in by Lot and like a "new ass" bat signal every man int he city surrounds Lot's house and tells him to bring the new pieces of ass outside so they can run a train on them. Lot was like nope, here have my virgin daughters for your rape train. Then the angels blinded everyone and told Lot to get the fuck out. They end with the incest scene that for some reason is wrong. So today we have a lot to talk about. First up is how hypocritical Sarai is with Hagar. First, she gives Hagar to Abram as a consolation prize because she's barren as fuck and God is slower than a fat guy on a scooter. So Abram conceives a child with Hagar and that pisses Sarai because she's a confused bitch. Next God chooses Abraham to be his special chosen people. The grand prize for that is circumcision, cutting part of your dick off. I know the prize sucks. Abraham circumcises himself and then everyone that is in his household has to be circumcised by Abraham. #NotGayAtAll. Today in the Daily Bible, we are looking at how Abram dishonors himself. Normally when we are talking about dishonoring people Asia is involved but this time it's Egypt. So we have Abram and Sarai are traveling through Egypt and like the good cuck that he is Abram allows Pharoh to take Sarai as a wife because he couldn't handle the consequences of being her husband. Sarai was so beautiful that it scared the man of Abram. Of course, Christians teach this as "You have to be faithful to god no matter what" because apparently he should have just trusted that god would protect them. Pharoh ends up giving Sarai back because of some major STD that he received and honestly you can see where this story was copy / pasted to another person in the bible. Abram had to go back to where he came from with Sarai in tow. How much bitching do you think she did on the way back? Philosophy professor Charles Taylor wrote a 900-page tome called "A Secular Age" in which he argues that secularity has more to do with a feeling of uncertainty about truth that pervades a culture in which all ideas are contested and contestable. My guest today on the show wrote a reader’s guide to Taylor’s epic work. His name is James K. A. Smith (he goes by Jamie). He’s a Professor of Philosophy at Calvin College and his book is called How (Not) to Be Secular. Today on the show, Jamie and I discuss what it means to live in a secular age, how we got here, and why it creates so much anxiety. Whether you’re a believer, agnostic, or atheist, you’re going to find some fascinating insights about today’s culture.

Why was it virtually impossible not to believe in God in, say, 1500 in our Western society, while in 2016 many people find it more difficult to believe than not? This is the question that Charles Taylor tackles in his massive book A Secular Age. In this episode, James K. A. Smith joins us to talk about Taylor's work. What was it like to believe in God in the past and what is it like for many believers today—and how did we get from there to here? Whether you find it easy or difficult to believe in God today, you'll find much food for thought in Smith's book How (Not) to be Secular: Reading Charles Taylor. About James K. A. Smith James K. A. Smith is professor of philosophy at Calvin College and author of How (Not) to be Secular: Reading Charles Taylor. His latest book is called You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit. He recently visited Brigham Young University to deliver a guest lecture sponsored by the Wheatley Institution. The post #45— How (Not) to Be Secular, with James K. A.
