"Spirituality is like nuclear fission—it has the power to illuminate and energize but also to destroy when mishandled." — Dan Koch"Thriving isn't about a perfect life; it's about alignment between our deepest values and our lived reality." — Dan KochOn our path to spiritual health, we need to keep our eyes open to the ways religion and spirituality have been exploited to coerce, control, and create chaos. Focusing on the intersection of religion and psychology, licensed therapist, researcher, and podcaster Dan Koch is creating a public conversation about spiritual harm and abuse, helping victims learn how to deal with spiritual trauma, and offering insight and guidance toward healthy religious and spiritual experiences. From his own personal journey of religious trauma to his extensive research on spiritual abuse, Dan shares insights on how faith communities can both wound and restore. The conversation covers the psychological impact of religious trauma, the complexities of self-diagnosis, and practical strategies for self-knowledge and healing for anyone who has wrestled with faith, struggled with past church experiences, or have lost their religion. In this conversation with Dan Koch, we discuss:The psychological study of spiritual abuse and harm, including conceptual definitions and the many factors that come along with them. The symptoms and most recognizable patterns that point to spiritual abuseThe impact of abuse and trauma on psychological and spiritual healthHow to reappraise and challenge harmful core beliefsAnd how to find healing, joy, and transcendence as we deal with past trauma.Spirituality: Pro-Social Benefits, with a Shadow Side of Harm, Exploitation, and ViolenceThrough With & For, as well as the broader work of The Thrive Center, we regularly explore the expansive benefits and positives that emerge from our inherent spirituality as human beings, and how that relates to our individual and collective thriving.Religion and spirituality can be an immense force for good, offering countless pro-social benefits to the world, helping us our innate spiritual capacities is an essential factor in what it means to thrive. But we have to acknowledge the harm and vice and corruption—the violence— that has been perpetrated through religious and spiritual contexts. Spiritual abuse is a serious matter and there's no way we can cultivate a full understanding or integrated experience of healthy spirituality without coming to terms with its prevalence and effects.Dan Koch's attention to spiritual harm and abuse is about clearing the way toward a healthier spirituality grounded in care and healing. By exposing and exploring past traumas in the context of heathy and respectful relationships, we can grow into a more joyful faith and transcendent spiritual life.About Dan KochDan Koch is a licensed therapist supporting patients working through the trauma of spiritual abuse; and his work and insight in this domain emerges from his empirical research. He's also host of the You Have Permission podcast. With a background in philosophy and theology, he explores questions of faith, doubt, and spiritual well-being. His research focuses on the psychological effects of religious trauma and how individuals can heal from spiritual abuse.Find more of his work at dankochwords.com.You can find his podcast, You Have Permission wherever you listen to podcasts and find exclusive episodes at patreon.com/dankoch.Helpful Links and ResourcesDan Koch's WebsiteJoin Dan Koch's PatreonYou Have Permission PodcastDan Koch's Research on Spiritual AbuseThe Spiritual Harm and Abuse Scale Clinical ScreenerDevelopment of the Spiritual Harm and Abuse Scale (Article, May 2022)Quotable"I would just distinguish between self-knowledge and self-diagnosis—one leads to growth, the other can lead to unnecessary fear.""Avoidance is both a symptom of trauma and a cause of it—it keeps the rest of the symptoms around.""Spirituality is like nuclear fission—it has the power to illuminate and energize but also to destroy when mishandled.""You can't worship a villain—when spiritual abuse distorts your image of God, it becomes almost impossible to stay in faith.""Thriving isn't about a perfect life; it's about alignment between our deepest values and our lived reality."Show NotesDan Koch on spiritual abuse, religious trauma, and healingHow beliefs about God shape emotional well-beingPractical self-knowledge exercises to promote healingThe impact of fear-based religious teachings on mental healthStrategies for deconstructing harmful religious experiencesUnderstanding Spiritual Abuse and Religious TraumaDefinition and key elements of spiritual abuseDifference between spiritual harm and abuseThe role of power, control, and coercion in religious settingsHow religious trauma manifests in daily lifeConnection between religious trauma and PTSDThe Psychological and Emotional Impact of Religious TraumaThe interplay between faith, fear, and mental healthThe long-term effects of toxic religious teachingsHow avoidance perpetuates trauma symptomsSelf-diagnosis vs. self-awareness in spiritual healingThe importance of challenging harmful core beliefsPractical Strategies for Self-Knowledge and HealingDan Koch's guided self-knowledge exerciseHow breath work can regulate anxiety from spiritual traumaRecognizing and reframing harmful core beliefsThe power of contemplative practices in spiritual healingUsing evidence-based approaches to reconstruct faithHow Churches and Communities Can Foster Spiritual HealthHow leadership can avoid coercive controlCreating spaces for questioning and spiritual growthThe importance of transparency in religious institutionsEncouraging self-agency in spiritual communitiesRedefining authority and spiritual guidance in a healthy wayPam King's Key TakeawaysSpirituality is like nuclear fission: its incredible power can be harnessed for abundant good that is essential to thriving, but when it is exploited or used irresponsibly, the fallout is catastrophic for human well-being.Thriving is an integrative process that can be better understood and better lived when we draw from psychological, philosophical, and theological sources.Sometimes our core beliefs are the source of spiritual harm and trauma, and these can be reframed, reappraised, and challenged—aligning us with self-respect, truth, and love. Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair talk with Bill Cavanaugh about how, as Christians, we might understand the shifting and disruption of our times. Bill proposes that rather than reading the signs through the lens of secularisation, we should think in terms of “the migration of the holy”. He contends that the holy has migrated to the immanent categories of contemporary life in, for example, our captivity by money, consumerism, or the big tech oligarchs. In doing so, he gives us a helpful way of engaging the unravelling and understanding the nature of our modern “Egypt”. William T. Cavanaugh is Professor of Catholic Studies and Director of the Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul University in Chicago. A widely-published theologian specialising in political theology and ecclesiology, he is the recipient of the 2023 Cortelyou-Lowery Award. Heavily influenced by working in the slums of Santiago, Chile under the military dictatorship, his work involves mentoring and support for under-resourced scholars and practitioners across the Global South. His work is concerned with the social implications of Catholic social doctrine and the Church's social and political presence in situations of violence and economic injustice. - Links -For Alan J Roxburgh:http://alanroxburgh.com/abouthttps://www.themissionalnetwork.com/author/alan-roxburgh/https://journalofmissionalpractice.com/alan-roxburghTwitter: https://twitter.com/alanjroxburgh?lang=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alan.roxburgh.127/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thecommonsnetworkJoining God in the Great Unraveling https://www.amazon.ca/Joining-God-Great-Unraveling-Learned/dp/1725288508/ref=sr_1_Leadership, God's Agency and Disruptions https://www.amazon.ca/Leadership-Gods-Agency-Disruptions-Confronting/dp/1725271745/refJoining God, Remaking Church, Changing the World: The New Shape of the Church in Our Time https://www.amazon.ca/Joining-Remaking-Church-Changing-World/dp/0819232114/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2NHGW8KB7L0SQ&keywords=Alan+J+Roxburgh&qid=1687098960&s=books&sprefix=alan+j+roxburgh%2Cstripbooks%2C130&sr=1-3For Jenny Sinclair:Website: https://togetherforthecommongood.co.uk/from-jenny-sinclairLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenny-sinclair-0589783b/Twitter: https://twitter.com/T4CGFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TogetherForTheCommonGoodUKInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/t4cg_insta/For William T Cavanaugh:https://las.depaul.edu/academics/catholic-studies/faculty/Pages/william-cavanaugh.aspxTorture and Eucharist (1998)https://www.amazon.co.uk/Torture-Eucharist-Theology-Challenges-Contemporary/dp/0631211993The Myth of Religious Violence (2009)https://www.amazon.co.uk/Myth-Religious-Violence-Ideology-Conflict/dp/0195385047/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=VvDsF&content-id=amzn1.sym.3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_p=3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_r=260-3097777-8583156&pd_rd_wg=T3BgMigrations of the Holy: Theologies of State and Church (2011)https://www.amazon.co.uk/Migrations-Holy-Political-Meaning-Church/dp/0802866093/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=VvDsF&content-id=amzn1.sym.3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_p=3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_r=260-3097777-8583156&pd_rd_wg=T3BgzField Hospital: The Church's Engagement with a Wounded World (2016)https://www.amazon.co.uk/Field-Hospital-Churchs-Engagement-Wounded/dp/0802872972/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=Xoyww&content-id=amzn1.sym.3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_p=3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_r=260-3097777-8583156&pd_rd_wg=njOjThe Uses of Idolatry (forthcoming, Oxford UP, 2024)https://www.amazon.co.uk/Uses-Idolatry-William-T-Cavanaugh/dp/0197679056 Get full access to Leaving Egypt at leavingegyptpodcast.substack.com/subscribe

In a profound journey of faith, West Point cadet Austin Hemminger's story is one of transformation amid the rigors of basic training. And, pastors can face significant challenges as they try to balance their family and their work. Sam Rainer offers some reasons in a Baptist Press article.

(N.T. Wright, from today's episode)What better way to secure the greatness of your political state (or maybe political party) than to invoke the name of God as being uniquely supportive of your team? It brings a sickening and divisive new meaning to Romans 8:31—”If God is for us, who can be against us?” In this episode, revered New Testament scholar N.T. Wright joins Miroslav Volf to discuss Monotheism, Nationalism, & Violence. Together they reflect on the history and current realities of what happens when these three elements converge. The conversation was inspired by N.T. Wright's response to a short digital booklet that Miroslav Volf entitled Monotheism, Nationalism, & Violence: 25 Theses, which is available for download at faith.yale.edu.Click here to download Monotheism, Nationalism, & Violence: 25 Theses, a short digital booklet by Miroslav Volf, via faith.yale.edu.“In this essay, written in form of 25 interlocking theses, I approach the problem of religiously motivated or legitimized violence by exploring the relation between monotheism and nationalism. The first is allegedly the most violent of all forms of religion and the second one of the most violent forms of political arrangements, especially when it is cut loose from universal moral commitment and tied to some form of tribal identity (“exclusive nationalism”). I argue that monotheism is a universalist creed and that it is compatible only with inclusive nationalism, a nationalism that is a form of special relations framed by a universal moral code. When monotheism is aligned with exclusive nationalism—when it becomes a “political religion” aligned with exclusivist nationalism—monotheism betrays its universality, a feature which lies at its very core, and morphs into violence, generating and legitimizing henotheism: our god of our nation in contrast and competition to other nations with their gods. Alternatively, if monotheism keeps its universality while associated as political religion with exclusive nationalism it will tend to underwrite dreams of nationalist imperialism: our god and our nation as masters of the world.”Show NotesHelp the Yale Center for Faith & Culture meet a $10,000 matching challenge for podcast production; visit faith.yale.edu/give to donate today.Download Miroslav Volf's short digital booklet, Monotheism, Nationalism, & Violence: 25 ThesesVolf introduces Monotheism, Nationalism, & Violence“The price monotheism always has to pay for its alliance with exclusive nationalism is the loss of its soul. When monotheism embraces exclusive nationalism, monotheism's God morphs from the creator and lover of all people and all creatures into a selfish and violent idol of a particular nation.”Instrumentalizing GodWhat is religion anyway?Brent Nongbri, Before Religion: A History of a Modern ConceptMartin Riesenbrot, A Promise of Salvation, A Theory of ReligionChristians were regarded with suspicion, as atheistsWright: “…this leads some to say religion is itself a dangerous and violent thing because it leads to people saying I have this God and he's more important than your God or whatever. And all sorts of violence stem from that. Indeed, one could argue that the Enlightenment's redefinition radical redefinition of the word religion over against its, say, early centuries use, has been part of the problem. But that, that would be perhaps a more polemical thesis.”Religion plays an important role in political society. How did religion work in the ancient world? Is religion a force for evil in society? Working from a secularist paradigm or not?Monotheism revised by ChristologyTwo Christian groups anathematizing each other“Nothing hangs on the word religion.”Ultimate allegiance, and to what? What are the political responsibilities of the state to religion?Naming proper allegianceWright on Jesus and Political Authority in John 19: “In other words, in the famous Romans 13, um, it's not a totalitarian passage, though some have read it like that. But Paul says there is no authority except from God. In other words, there is the one God, but God wants his world to be wisely governed by human authorities. But he will then call them to account. And my favorite passage on that is in John 19, when Jesus is being interviewed by Pontius Pilate. And Pilate says, don't you realize I have the right to have you killed? And Jesus says, and it's extraordinary, think of Johannine theology, that Jesus says this to Pilate. You could have no authority over me unless it was given to you from above and then the corollary is therefore the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin and that's that's a very interesting differentiation which no doubt Pilate couldn't understand at all and of course violence enters in straight away because Pilate's response is to send him off to be crucified.”Polycarp (paraphrased by N.T. This week on Soul of the Nation, we continue our series on White Christian Nationalism by welcoming Jack Jenkins to the podcast. Jenkins is a national reporter for Religion News Service (RNS) covering U.S. Catholics and the intersection of religion and politics. Earlier this year, Jenkins ventured west to northern Idaho to explore the rise of White Christian Nationalists staking up a claim in the state and published a piece with RNS documenting his findings. In their conversation, Jenkins discusses his discoveries on how deeply entrenched the White Christian Nationalist movement has become in the local politics of northern Idaho, how he thinks these trends will affect other libertarian minded states, and how current residents are responding to the influx of this movement in their communities. You can read Jack's article from RNS here.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How does religious violence end? When God Stops Fighting: How Religious Violence Ends (U California Press, 2022) probes for answers through case studies and personal interviews with militants associated with the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq, the Sikh Khalistan movement in India's Punjab, and the Moro movement for a Muslim Mindanao in the Philippines. Even the most violent of movements, consumed by grand religious visions of holy warfare, eventually come to an end. In order to understand what led to these drastic changes in the attitudes of men and women once devoted to all-out ideological war, Juergensmeyer takes readers on an intimate journey into the minds of religiously motivated militants. Readers will travel with Juergensmeyer to the affected regions, examine compelling stories of devotion and reflection, and meet with people related to the movements and impacted by them to understand how their worldviews can, and do, change. Building on the author's lifetime of fieldwork interviewing religious combatants around the world, When God Stops Fighting reveals how the transformation of religious violence appears to those who once promoted it as the only answer. Tiatemsu Longkumer is a Ph.D. scholar working on ‘Anthropology of Religion' at North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong: India. Learn more about your ad choices. In Rage and Carnage in the Name of God (Duke University Press, 2022), Dr. Abiodun Alao examines the emergence of a culture of religious violence in postindependence Nigeria, where Christianity, Islam, and traditional religions have all been associated with violence. He investigates the root causes and historical evolution of Nigeria's religious violence, locating it in the forced coming together of disparate ethnic groups under colonial rule, which planted the seeds of discord that religion, elites, and domestic politics exploit. Dr. Alao discusses the histories of Christianity, Islam, and traditional religions in the territory that became Nigeria, the effects of colonization on the role of religion, the development of Islamic radicalization and its relation to Christian violence, the activities of Boko Haram, and how religious violence intermixes with politics and governance. In so doing, he uses religious violence as a way to more fully understand intergroup relations in contemporary Nigeria. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
