After a busy November that included a cruise and family holidays, I return to my sanctuary with an upgraded microphone and a commitment to break down one standout song each week. Join me and familiar voices like Allison, Jim, Dave, and Patty as we kick off this fresh chapter, inviting you to engage and share your own thoughts on the tracks that move you.Revisit the golden era of funk as we highlight the Ohio Players' iconic "Skin Tight" album, a defining moment in music history. Whether you're humming along to "Name That Tune" or just vibing with the beats, we'll explore the band's transformation from the Ohio Untouchables to funk legends. This isn't just a walk down memory lane—it's a deep dive into how bands like Kool and the Gang and Sly and the Family Stone laid the groundwork for today's artists, who continue to keep the funk alive through sampling and reinterpretation.Nostalgia hits a high note as we wander through the 70s and 80s, sharing personal stories and pop culture moments that left a mark. From the complex ties in the music industry featuring giants like Sean "Diddy" Combs and Andre Harrell, to the timeless tunes of Sade and Al B. Sure, this episode is rich with music and memories that have shaped our lives. Happy holiday season! We're celebrating with a special show of music by some of Savannah's beloved local musicians. First, Matt Eckstine, voted Best Local Americana/Folk/Roots Band/Artist in Connect Savannah's "Best of 2022" awards. Harnessing a wide range of influences from Tom Petty and Jack Johnson to Steve Earle and James Taylor, Matt released his debut solo album in 2017. In 2020, the mandatory quarantine provided him with an opportunity to move to a home studio, resulting in "Lil' Blue," 8 brand new tracks that vary in sound and feel but are grounded in their influence. We're playing 9 of his songs, most of which are from that album, plus a few older ones. https://www.instagram.com/matteckstinemusic/ https://www.matteckstinemusic.com/ Then after our station break, switching the vibe up! We're playing music by The Maxines, an all-female rock band led by AJ Grey on vocals, with Emma Smith on bass, and twins Coco and Maddie Oke on drums and guitar. With angsty, swoon-worthy guitar riffs and moody vocals paired with powerful performances, their mesh of grunge rock and metal speaks for itself. Listen here to 6 songs from their debut album "Skin Tight" - named after the first song they ever wrote - just released on October 1 of this year. https://www.instagram.com/themaxinesband/ https://themaxinesband.bandcamp.com/album/skin-tight Stay tuned for future weeks of the show, because we will be featuring an interview with each of these bands, as separate episodes, as well!

Episode # 208 Lead Vocalist/Bassist Chris McLernon talks New Band Kinell, New Music/Videos, Thin Lizzy, and more! Kinell formed as a challenge: Can you write and record original songs in the spirit and style of a band you love and still create something new? Saigon Kick bassist Chris McLernon and Action City Blackout guitarist Collin DeBruhl wanted to find out, starting with Thin Lizzy, Irish-born rockers who rumbled through the ‘70s and ‘80s on a mix of catchy songs and raffish charm that resonated on both sides of the Atlantic and influenced countless musicians. After demoing a handful of tracks, McLernon and DeBruhl had the makings of a forward-looking sound that built on classic trademarks: twinned guitars, rock 'n' roll bravado, irresistible hooks and a poet's ear for lyrics and mood. They had a name, Kinell, a shortened version of an expression you've probably uttered yourself in moments of amazement or annoyance. Seeking to fill out the rhythm section, Kinell enlisted a revolving quartet of phenomenal drummers: Barry Kerch (Shinedown), Ricky Sanders (Saigon Kick, STA), Eric Rickert (Souls Harbor, Skin Tight) and Marc Danzeisen (Riverdogs, Little Caesar), playing as only they could and collectively giving the songs punch and swing. The result is Kinell's energized and outgoing debut, “Crash. Burn. Rebirth.” Produced by McLernon and mixed by multiplatinum producer Eric Bass, “Crash. Burn. Rebirth.” celebrates the past without being trapped by it. --------- Chris McLernon - bass, guitars, lead vocals Collin DeBruhl - guitar, vocals Barry Kerch - drums on Take It All, What Have I Done, Kingpin Marc Danzeisen - drums on What Might Have Been, That's The Way Thing Are, Forever After, Easy Come and Easy Go Rick Sanders - drums on Spatial Survival, Take Me Home Eric Rickert - drums on Say Goodbye Additional riot vocals - Ron Redick, Amy Haines, Laura Vanadore, Jack Hunter, Emily Richards Produced by Chris McLernon Mixed by Eric Bass Additional engineering by Rick Sanders, Eric Rickert, Barry Kerch and Marc Danzeisen Mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound Artwork by Robert Merrick All songs ASCAP 2021

A very personal film about an out-of-wedlock pregnancy is the first in this year's Someday Stories, a platform that helps emerging filmmakers to create their first professionally-funded, short film project. Mary Mary is written and directed by Ella Gilbert, and it will be released tomorrow. It's the sixth series of Someday Stories, which has now delivered a total of 36 short films. The project mentors filmmakers aged between 18 and 29, and helps them tell their own stories. Ella Gilbert, currently appearing in Circa Theatre's production of Skin Tight in Wellington, talks to Lynn Freeman about why the story of Mary Mary was so important to her. Ella Gilbert's film Mary Mary is released tomorrow as part of Someday Stories Series 6.
On this episode we chat with New York City native, Chris Mardini. At only 20 years old, he has released an impressive string of singles along with his self-titled debut album. Hailing from Greenwich Village, an epicenter of New York's 1960s counterculture movement, it's no surprise Chris inherently possesses an eclectic pallet of influences which come through in his music. Mardini began playing guitar and drums at age 10 and cut his teeth as a teen playing in bands around the New York tristate area at venues like The Bitter End and Rockwood Music Hall but ultimately decided to embark on a solo career as a songwriter. His first endeavor at songwriting, I'll Try, is a fantastic example of Mardini's intuition and maturity as a young songwriter; the song masterfully weaves through genres while maintaining a sound all his own, and the chorus will have you eagerly setting this track to repeat. SPIN Magazine stated “We're keeping a close eye on him, you might want to do the same.” Each new release coincides with an equally interesting music video, and we discuss the concepts of each of Mardini's videos along with related topics such as films, directors, actors, and production. His latest single, Pockets, combines modern hybrid musical stylings juxtaposed visually against a simplistic vintage backdrop, but the two collectively express the timeless feelings of agitated youth, angst and unrest. From the aesthetically clean Sleepless directed by Shantie Midnight, to the abstract Herd created by Nick Wolf of Howl Peak Productions, to the animation of Gabriela Sibilska on Skin Tight, each visual representation elevates Chris's songs and further engages his audience. Though the overall content of his songs often tap into a more serious and visceral realm, they are undeniably residing in a pop neighborhood. Punk, indie, classic rock, grunge, and hip hop all mesh into a style that is Chris Mardini. Unafraid to venture into uncharted waters, express vulnerability and take chances both in the audio and visual mediums, Chris has left an immediate unapologetic mark as an artist. “I feel like I owe it to myself and to the people listening to be as genuine as possible in my music. Being cheap with the lyrics or writing something that's just filler is taking the easy way out, so I make sure to put real meaning into every line and melody.” Currently Chris splits his time between college in St. Louis and his home in Manhattan, as he continues to produce new content. Even through the pandemic some notable shows took place, including a live-streamed concert at the prestigious Brooklyn Bowl, and an opening performance for DJ Zedd in St. Louis. Keep an eye out for Chris's new single coming soon... Follow Chris Mardini on Spotify | Apple Music | YouTube | Instagram |

Featured in TIR Episode 186, Part 2 of 2: Guitarist, singer, composer and producer Clarence “Chet” Willis, he of one of the greatest funk-soul bands of all time -- the mighty Ohio Players! Beginning in 1975 he became a mainstay with the group, trading guitar licks with the legendary Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner and joining keyboardist Billy Beck and drummer James “Diamond” Williams, both of whom have also been TRUTH IN RHYTHM guests, on backing vocals. Willis, Beck and Williams later formed the spinoff band called Shadow, and all of them more recently have been performing as today’s version of the Ohio Players. While The Ohio Players’ roots stretch back to the late 1950s, it wasn’t until “Funky Worm” hit No. 1 on the R&B chart in early 1973 that the group got a taste of major success. They would go on to notch four more chart-toppers, with two of those songs also making No. 1 on the pop chart. A move to Mercury Records saw the band refining its sound to the signature millions would love. It was marked by stronger songwriting and pristine production, inventive arrangements, the distinctive lead vocals of highly influential, one-of-a-kind talent Sugarfoot, as well as his nimble guitar playing, the falsetto background singing of Diamond and Beck, as well as the latter’s brilliant keyboard work and, of course, the former’s progressive and impeccable drumming. Beck replaced enigmatic genius Walter “Junie” Morrison, who would go on to release eclectic solo albums and become a key contributor to Parliament-Funkadelic during the late 1970s. Add to that intoxicating aural mix, Marshall Jones’ rumbling bass, and horn players Ralph “Pee Wee” Middlebrooks, Marvin “Merv” Pierce and bandleader Clarence “Satch” Satchell, and last but not least Willis' guitar work and vocals, and you have the unmistakable magical funk perfection that was mid-1970s Ohio Players. Essential to their indelible sound and consistency was how self-contained of a unit they were, writing, arranging, producing and performing everything themselves. As if all that was not enough of a seduction, The Ohio Players were also famous for their sexy and provocative album covers showing young ladies in various stages of undress. The Ohio Players’ creative and commercial peak took place from 1974-1977 when they unleashed the gold- or platinum-selling albums Skin Tight, Fire, Honey, Contradiction and Angel. During that time they were considered the biggest or close to the biggest funk or R&B band in the world -- rivaled only by the likes of Earth, Wind and Fire, Parliament-Funkadelic, WAR, Kool & the Gang, The Isley Brothers and The Commodores. The Ohio Players’ hits and classics include “Skin Tight,” “Jive Turkey,” “Heaven Must Be Like This,” “Fire,” “I Want to Be Free,” “Runnin’ From the Devil,” “Smoke,” “Love Rollercoaster,” “Fopp,” “Let’s Love,” “Sweet Sticky Thing,” “Who’d She Coo?”, “Far East Mississippi,” “Contradiction,” “Angel,” “Body Vibes,” “O-H-I-O,” “Merry Go Round,” “Funk-O-Nots” and “Take De Funk Off, Fly.” While Sugar continued to record under the Ohio Players name in the 1980s, Diamond, Beck and Willis splintered off to form Shadow. They released three albums for Elektra Records between 1979-1981. The last one, Shadows in the Streets, is worth seeking out for slick funk cuts like “Born to Hustle” and “Sinister Way.” The trio reunited with Sugar for an Ohio Players comeback album called Back in 1988. That would be the group’s final studio album to date, but varying lineups would keep bringing the Players’ unique brand of funk to stages for performances that continue to this day, led by Diamond, Willis and Beck. Here, Willis discusses his approach to guitar, the secret sauce that made The Ohio Players so special, unforgettable memories, band member talents and personalities, the group’s catchy new single, “Reset,” and impending album, and stage show. At just 21 years old, Ciara already boasts the kind of resume dreams are made of… But a closer look reveals a relentless work ethic and passion for genre-shifting storytelling at the core of her success. She’s the writer and director of 16 short films with considerable experience in both independent cinema and commercial projects. After graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of North Texas, she transitioned to Los Angeles where she works as a freelance cinematographer creating music videos and branded, promotional content. In 2018, Ciara was named “The Next Visionary Filmmaker” presented by Walt Disney Studios and Nissan, an honor that came with a $100,000 to fund her first feature film “Skin Tight”, a brand new car, and the opportunity to meet Ava Duvernay and Oprah at the “Wrinkle in Time” premiere! All of Ciara’s projects, including her early submissions to our festival, “It’s All In The Cosmos” and “Enter the Depth” present thought-provoking themes about intense introspection and characters struggling to find their way in the world. Her stories feature strong female leads, determined to embrace diversity and overcome racism all grounded in her acute ability to use cinematography to illuminate significance in the seemingly insignificant. The result of her efforts and gifts is a rewarding viewer experience defined by the marriage of narrative and the elements of film. Mr Eazi gave us one of the biggest African Music projects of 2018 and is considered one of the biggest artists in Africa. He obviously needs no introduction at all and you probably know his past hits such as Leg Over, Bankulize featuring Pappy Kojo, Skin Tight featuring Efya, Eugy's Dance For Me where he featured, and many more. He has an artist deal with Mad Decent which is owned by Diplo of Major Lazer and licensing deals with Universal Africa and Columbia Records UK in 2018. His label Banku Music and UMG Africa jointly released the 2018 project Life is Eazi Vol 2 Lagos To London project. The title Life is Eazi Vol 2 - Lagos To London refers to Mr Eazi's musical journey as a Lagos boy now in London with the world at his feet. Vol 2 is about Mr Eazi becoming a household name and finding himself relocating to the UK. Listen to our review of this project.

Amelia Robinson sits down with James (Diamond) Williams of the Ohio Players right here in the Land of Funk. More than 40 years after the Players struck it big, their long list of hits — "Skin Tight," "Fire," “Love Rollercoaster” included — still make people move. With Diamond, one of Rolling Stone magazine’s top drummers of all time, at the helm, the Players are working on a new album and last year released the single “Reset.” Diamond does not hold back during his chat with Amelia on the What Had Happened Was podcast. He shares his thoughts on everything from fast cars and sexy women on album covers to why the Players aren’t in the Rock Hall of Fame (yet) and why Dayton (the Land of Funk) doesn’t have an Ohio Players Way (yet). Strap in. The ride is about to get funky.

One of the most popular funk bands of the 1970s and '80s, the Ohio Players is back in the spotlight, this time emphasizing the distinctive voice and musical style of its frontman, Hamilton native Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner. Sugarfoot's Ohio Players will join Lakeside, Con-Funkion, Dazz Band and The Barkays Aug. 29 at the Soul Food Festival at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds, and that's close enough to home for Sugarfoot. Although Sugarfoot was born in Hamilton, he hardly calls it home anymore. Since he left as a teenager, he's only been back once, for a funeral last year, and just zipped in and out of town as fast as he could, he said. “Everything I used to know has been gone,” he said. “I have too many bad memories about Hamilton and I don't like to go back.” But it was in Hamilton where he first started learning about music, playing harmonica on the street corners for change, learning his first few guitar chords from “some wino,” and sneaking into the Rendezvous Lounge when he was 12 years old to play with the musicians there. But by the time he was 14, he ran away from his Front Street home, where he was the oldest of 14 children, left town and never looked back. “We were poor and I wanted to go anywhere I could make some money,” he said. He first went to Cincinnati, then to Dayton, where it was easier to make money playing music. There, in 1971, he hooked up with a band called the Ohio Untouchables, but when he joined as singer and guitarist, they changed the name of the band to Ohio Players. Within two years, the Ohio Players cracked the Billboard charts and in 1974 scored the first of six consecutive No. 1 albums on the Rhythm'n'Blues charts, “Skin Tight.”
