In this KEEN ON show, the music historian Sheryl Kaskowitz, author of A CHANCE TO HARMONIZE, narrates how FDR and his team of New Dealers saved America from the Great Depression - one folk song at a time. And she explains that there would have been on popular American folk music - no Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez or Bob Dillon - without FDR's Hidden Music Unit and its radical ambition to reinvent American communities in the depths of the 1930s. Sheryl Kaskowitz is a writer, editor, and audio storyteller based in Berkeley, California. Her new book, A Chance to Harmonize: How FDR's Hidden Music Unit Tried to Save America from the Great Depression—One Song at a Time, comes out in April 2024 from Pegasus Books. Since earning her PhD from Harvard, Sheryl has written extensively about music in American culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and the role that music can play in civic life. Her first book, God Bless America: The Surprising History of an Iconic Song, was published in 2013 to positive reviews (including pieces in The Washington Post and The Christian Science Monitor) and won an ASCAP Deems Taylor Book Award for music writing. Her writing has been published in The New York Times, Slate, Humanities, and The Avid Listener. She appeared in the BBC audio documentary “Government Song Woman” and has been interviewed on NPR's “All Things Considered,” WNYC's “The Takeaway,” the Washington Post's “Can He Do That?” podcast, the ABC News podcast “Start Here,” and the public radio news show “The Texas Standard.” Sheryl has received the Anne Firor Scott Mid-Career Fellowship from the Southern Association for Women Historians (2022), a Public Scholars Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities (2018), a Kluge Fellowship from the Library of Congress (2016), and research grants and awards from the American Musicological Society, Association for Recorded Sound Collections, Franklin & Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, Music Library Association, and Society for American Music.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. To be a servant or slave of Christ was a term used of the highest honor in the early church. What does it mean? What did it mean to the original audience of Christian's in Rome? Why is it important for us today? Most of all, why is this another aspect of the good news of Jesus Christ?

Of Lost Things Written for Television by: Toni Graphia Directed by: Brendan Maher This week's Outlander episode is brought to you by boxes of tissues and excellent tunes. Shout out to Bear McCreary the musical mastermind.  You must listen to the podcast to get my full thoughts and rantings.  Long story short, Jamie is protective of those he loves. He's willing to do what he must for their gain or to prevent their harm. He's a man of deep compassion and honor. When faced with blackmail and coercion, he rises the occasion. He wins the Dunsany's over when he saves their grandson. Jamie's a hero. His sense of normalcy and place, is shattered as the boy begins to resemble him. The man is given his leave and heads back to Lallybroch after 8 years serving his parole at Helwater. He adds the young Ellesmere, the son he cannot claim, to his list of lost things as the episode closes. He never expects to see the boy again. Lord John Grey and Lady Isobel are to be married. They will raise young William together. It's a beautiful friendship they have developed. Hopefully we will see John soon. Claire is at her end. Roadblocks since Ardsmuir, Jamie seems nowhere to be found. Brianna and Roger try to be uplifting and supportive, but she calls it quits, saying it's time to go home. Brianna and Roger share a kiss. The relationship is budding, but Brianna leaves with her mother. With they become more in time? There were a few misses with social status all but forgotten and that damned snake was just weird. Anyone remember the dragonlfy in amber paperweight Claire gave to Jamie at the stones in season 2?  This episode is full of bittersweet joy and sadness. It's life affirming, yet loss is great.  Will home be what it once was for Jamie or Claire? Can they go back? This is the gorgeous Bob Dillon cover that brought us all to tears. A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall What's Coming up? Season 3 Episode 5. Paul wants Timothy to teach his people the difference between the doctrine of demons and the good doctrine of Jesus Christ. Apparently people in that time (like today) were confused about what the gospel really is. The cultural attitude of America is changing. Just a few decades ago in America you could walk around and tell the essential Jesus story and most people would understand what you were saying. There was a consciousness that was aware of the basic story of the scripture, but that is not true today. America has changed its spirituality. The shift is thinking has affected our education system and all forms of media. In the 1960s Bob Dillon wrote these lyrics, “Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land And don’t criticize What you can’t understand, Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command Your old road is Rapidly agin’ Please get out of the new one If you can’t lend your hand … For the times they are a-changin’. Today there is a radical change in the direction of western history and most of us were already born into it and do not notice. These changes create a sense of confusion that leads to a confusion about the gospel and what it really is. Many Americans, who call themselves Christians, are actually holding onto and preaching a false gospel with their lives and with their words. One-ism and two-ism are terms coined by Dr Peter Jones, they are an easy way to remember what happens when our worldview shifts from a biblical worldview to anything else. It is a great and easy way to determine the truth of something you are looking at…
