This week's guest will be well known to many of you if you've been thinking about christian education for a while. At CEN's ITEC conference last month I got to sit down with one of our keynote speakers, David I Smith. David is a Professor of Education at Calvin University; Director of the Kuyers Institute for Christian Teaching and Learning, and is an internationally recognised voice on Christian education as an author and speaker. He's probably best known for his 2018 book, “On Christian Teaching.”He's known for his intentionally practical approach, so in this discussion I really wanted to look under the hood, to hear what theology drives his thinking and approach in general, which was fun! We talk through his main theological sources, we discuss power and how we might understand hospitality theologically, a key theme of his writing.

Yes, sex is about so much more than having an orgasm - carries the potential for making love as a doorway to higher consciousness. And that's what this episode is all about.  I feel so grateful to share this episode with you and honoured to have had the so inspiring Diana Richardson as a guest on my podcast. I feel grateful for her immense generosity to share her experiences and the unfolded insights with us - we had such a dynamic, expansive and physical conversation, physical as I could feel how she shared from such an embodied, true and authentic place, wonderful! I felt so inspired, to slow down, sense, listen, and yes allow making love to be a doorway to greater consciousness.  Diana is considered one of today's leading authorities on human sexuality. She is known as the pioneer of Slow Sex, and is an internationally acclaimed teacher and author in the field of tantric sex and spirituality. Diana has written 8 books on how in practical ways a person can experience a more fulfilling sex and love life. Born in South Africa in 1954, she first qualified as a lawyer (B.A.LLB), and then trained as a massage therapist (ITEC) in the UK. Her interest in the body and healing prompted an intense personal exploration into the union of sex and meditation - the essence of Tantra. Since 1993, together with her partner, Michael, she has been sharing her insights and experiences with couples who travel from many different parts of the world to participate in their informative and life changing ‘Making Love' workshops in Switzerland. In the conversation with Diana we talked about …  What Diana means with slow sex and why consciousness during sex inherently unfolds in slowing-down  The potential of sex to be a nurturing and expansive experience and to create a deep connection with oneself and ones` partner  Why sex is about much more than experiencing an orgasm: It is about how we do it; from a place of conscious awareness, in connection with our own body …  … how we can learn and start to transform our sexual practice into a journey that's not about «the peak» - but an invitation to dive deeper into the feeling that you have with and for each other The importance of curiosity, lightness and playfulness in this process! How making love invites us to cultivate body perception …  … and therefore experiencing making-love as a place where healing can happen  I hope you feel as energised and inspired as I did after listening to this conversation with Diana. There are many possibilities to learn more from Diana: Diana is the author of several books: Tantric Orgasm for women Tantric Orgasm for men Slow sex Tantric Sex and Menopause  The Heart of Tantric Sex  Tantric love: Feeling versus emotion  Tantric love letters Cool Sex  More links about Diana`s work  Website: www.livinglove.com TEDx TALK LINK The Power of Mindful Sex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqyW35EMLuM To leave any comments and to get in touch with me, follow me on Facebook or instagram, or visit my webpage www.flurinathali.com  Credits: Intro/outro music – ‘Hymn for Jim' by Aspyrian; Robin Porter – saxophone, Jack Gillen – guitar, Matt Parkinson – drums, composed by Robin Porter, listen to the full track here.  Graphic: Annina Thali, for more information click here Mix engineer: Jack Gillen, for more information click here

Artificial intelligence technology is developing quickly. A new handbook aims to help technology developers make the best ethical decisions for the public. The new handbook is called Ethics in the Age of Disruptive Technologies: An Operational Roadmap. It promises to give guidance on concerns related to the ethical use of AI technology such as ChatGPT. The handbook has been in the works for a few years. But the writers said they saw a need to work on it with greater urgency with the recent increased use of AI. The Institute of Technology, Ethics and Culture (ITEC) released the handbook on June 28. ITEC was launched by Santa Clara University's Markkula Center for Applied Ethics and the Vatican's Center for Digital Culture. Father Brendan McGuire worked in the technology industry before entering the priesthood about 23 years ago. He served as the executive director of the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association in the early 1990s. McGuire said that over the years, he has continued to meet with friends from the tech world. Many of them are now leaders in the industry. About 10 years ago, their discussions started to get more serious, he said. They said, 'What is coming over the hill with AI, it's amazing, it's unbelievable. But it's also frightening if we go down the wrong valley,'" McGuire said. McGuire said his former coworkers noted there is no system to make decisions. He got in touch with Kirk Hanson, who was head of the Markkula Center. He also contacted a local bishop, or Catholic religious official. The three of them got together and thought about what they could do. They decided they should get the Vatican involved in their efforts. Involving the government of the Roman Catholic Church made sense to them because tech companies are international companies.“他们说,‘人工智能将带来什么,这太神奇了,令人难以置信。 For McGuire, a Catholic priest, getting guidance from the Vatican was a natural step. He worked with Bishop Paul Tighe, who was serving as the secretary of the Vatican's Dicastery for Culture and Education. The department works for the development of people's human values. McGuire said Pope Francis asked Tighe to look into addressing ethical concerns related to technology. After a few years of working together, the Markkula Center and the Vatican officially created the ITEC program in 2019. That same year, the Vatican held a meeting in Rome called “The Common Good in the Digital Age.” McGuire said about 270 people joined. Among them were American technology company leaders and experts in robotics, cyberwarfare and security. After talking with tech leaders, the ITEC team decided to create a handbook to help companies think about how technology can be used in ethical ways. The guidelines are not just for Catholics, McGuire said. Ann Skeet is senior director of leadership ethics at the Markkula Center. She was one of the handbook's writers. She said the handbook is written in a way that is familiar to business leaders. This handbook comes as leaders in AI are calling for help. In May, Sam Altman of OpenAI stated the need for a new agency to help regulate the powerful systems. And Microsoft president Brad Smith said the U.S. government needs to “move faster” as AI progresses.

Following on from our previous episode with Joe Robinson, we are joined by Jason Kennedy who is the VP of Engineering at Improbable. Jason has an impressive background in, having previously directed large teams of engineers to push the boundaries of simulation technology for defence and space applications. In a full and frank discussion, Jason describes the challenge for scaling simulation applications for serious training and decision support applications. Coining the term ‘Horizontal Scaling'.Jason covers the demand signal first, laying out the need for improved collaboration between government, academia and industry across simulation technologies. Partly to reduce costs, but more importantly to model and rehearse things that just can't be done live due to the need for scale, complexity or things that are too dangerous to do in the real world on a live population.Jason goes on to describe what isn't working and proposes some approaches for improved collaboration and argues the case that there may be some dominant platforms for our ecosystems (such as we see with Apple and Google) but that's not necessarily a bad thing if it lifts the rest of the industry and academia to innovate. Like the rail network, some monopolies are just a reality we may have to live with, rather than a fragmented approach to developing our infrastructure. As ever we are joined by Andy Fawkes from MS&T, who has curated some of the best stories from the last two weeks across training and simulation. One story that doesn't seem to go away is the problems with UK MFTS. Andy also covers initiatives to lower the environmental impact of flying training and of course next week is ITEC in Rotterdam, which no doubt will provide a whole host of more interesting news to come!Episode Sponsor: Improbable DefenceImprobable Defence is a mission focused technology company working to transform the national security of our nations and their allies in the face of increasing global competition and evolving threats.Today, national security is defined by technological superiority. I am super excited to share this interview with Diana Richardson who is considered one of today's leading authorities on human sexuality.  Diana is known as the pioneer of Slow Sex and has been running ‘making love' workshops for couples since 1993.  She has also written 8 books on how in practical ways a person can experience a more fulfilling sex and love life.  I have every one of Diana's books and her work has hugely influenced both my personal and professional life so to chat with her was such a treat.   Diana has a beautiful way of articulating about sex, intimacy, love and Tantra and she shares her grounded and deep wisdom on how we learn sex unconsciously and the common elements and patterns of ‘conventional sex', how to unlearn ingrained habits, how to keep the sexual temperature cooler, why ‘conscious sex' is a better phrase than ‘slow sex', the keys to ‘conscious sex',  why a man fears losing his erection, how sex is often used as a way to discharge tension and stress, why sexual arousal is not a prerequisite for ‘conscious sex', how to invite your partner to explore a different style of sex and what happens in Diana's workshops.  There is SO much I didn't get to ask Diana so I am delighted she is up for round two in the autumn. Enjoy!!  Diana shares:   How we learn sex unconsciously and the common elements of ‘conventional sex' How being in our bodies is a key to a different type of sex  Why ‘conscious sex' is a better phrase than ‘slow sex' (the title of Diana's book)  The keys to ‘conscious sex'  How standing with an even distribution of weight shifts your perception How finding an anchor point in your body can support you to bring more awareness into the moment  The difference between ‘looking out' and receptive vision  How to unlearn ingrained habits such as going for the goal How to keep the sexual temperature cooler and contain your sexual vitality  The patterns Diana sees in men and women during ‘conventional sex' How to invite your partner to explore a different style of sex  Why the subtle sensations are little seeds Why a man fears losing his erection  Reframing a soft penis as a ‘relaxed penis'  How to have penetration with a ‘relaxed penis' What a ‘spontaneous erection' is  How playing with sex can open up whole new adventures in life  Why Diana wrote her new book ‘Cool Sex'  What happens in Diana's workshops Why sexual arousal is not a prerequisite for ‘conscious sex' How sex is often used as a way to discharge tension and stress  Diana Richardson is considered one of today's leading authorities on human sexuality, and she is known as the pioneer of Slow Sex. She has written 8 books on how in practical ways a person can experience a more fulfilling sex and love life. On this episode of Mission Minded we are joined by Christopher Flanders and Werner Mischke, authors of the book Honor, Shame, and The Gospel. Christians engaged in communicating the gospel navigate a challenging tension: faithfulness to God’s ancient, revealed Word—and relevance to the local, current social context. What if there was a lens or paradigm offering both? Understanding the Bible—particularly the gospel—through the ancient cultural “language” of honor-shame offers believers this double blessing. An honorific gospel offers new points of resonance with communities where shame and honor are critical values, including most unreached peoples. In Honor, Shame, and the Gospel, over a dozen practitioners and scholars from diverse contexts and fields add to the ongoing conversation around the theological and missiological implications of an honorific gospel. Eight illuminating case studies explore ways to make disciples in a diversity of social contexts—for example, East Asian rural, Middle Eastern refugee, African tribal, and Western secular urban. Honor, Shame, and the Gospel provides valuable resources to impact the ministry efforts of the church, locally and globally. Linked with its ancient honor-shame cultural roots, the gospel, paradoxically, is ever new—offering fresh wisdom to Christian leaders and optimism to the church for our quest to expand Christ’s kingdom and serve the worldwide mission of God.
