For many, Frankie Gavin is the most gifted amateur boxer the UK has seen. A World amateur champion, he routinely beat the best Americans, Eastern Europeans and Cubans on his way to an Olympic berth at the 2008 Beijing Games. However, having qualified so long before heading to China, he started a battle with the scales that took over his life for a year. He ended up missing the weight and flying home, his Olympic dream over. He turned pro with Frank Warren and would win British and Commonwealth titles but lose in bids for European and world honours. It was a stellar career, but here he ponders whether he fulfilled his potential or not and looks back with searing honesty about what might have been. Boxing Life Stories is now on PATREON. There’s Carl Froch, the 3-time World Super Middleweight champion, Frankie Gavin, who is still the only Englishman to win a world amateur title and WBO Cruiserweight king Johnny Nelson. They’ve all achieved amazing things in boxing and it was fascinating to listen to what they had to say.

It's a shorter than usual show this week with a quiet final weekend of the mid term break taking it's toll on the activities around the county. That being said there's plenty of action with Johnny Brady playing the Landmark Central and national treasure Frankie Gavin on stage with his friends in KGB in The Dock. Breifne Earley caught up with Frankie Gavin, a founding member of De Danann, and most recently award best traditional musician at the 2018 Gradam Ceoil festival during the week ahead of the concert to talk about the concert, how the group came about, the passing of his friend and co-founder Alec Finn and some of his memories of bringing trad music to the international masses on the rock festival circuit with the famous folk band. Breifne also takes a look at what else is happening in entertainment and sport around the county this week.

So - when it comes to this episode, we're nearly lost for words. It's engrossing. A deep dive into a sea teeming with life.  Clare born fiddle player Tola Custy talks about how Irish music nearly died and how his father and others of his generation saved it. About out of tune whistling, the woman who bossed the Tulla Céilí Band and Radical Comhaltas. Growing up in a house divided - Kevin Burke fans on one side, Frankie Gavin fans on the other. He talks about Asturian fiddle playing and Irish fiddle playing; the James Goodman manuscript collection; the Time (Ireland) Act of 1916. He talks about stage fright and feeding off the energy of other musicians, the different beauty of Micho Russell's playing. He talks about the waltz time in his head, and much else besides.  And he plays the folllowing pieces: The Lighthouse and The Mermaid (his own tune) into a Swedish jig followed by a Breton jig So Small The Boat, So Big The Sea (Tola Custy) Time Zone Laneway (Tola Custy) into The Maple Leaf (a reel composed by Darach De Brun for his wedding in 1976) The Yellow Wattle, which Tola learned from the playing of Micho Russell, into Metro-Gnome (his own composition) and finally Love At The Ending.  Following the last solo piece, Tola plays a set of tunes with Ado Barker, and they're then joined by Corinn Strating on flute. Recorded at The Last Jar in Melbourne as part of the first of three bush fire relief fundraisers. Last weekend was full of British fighters, and we had some fun times in a number of those scraps. On Sky Sports, Kell Brook laced up Frankie Gavin, Lee Selby annexed a belt from Evgeny Gradovich, Jorge Linares outlasted Kevin Mitchell in a brutal go, Amir Khan got past a surprisingly scrappy Chris Algieri on Spike... But likely the talk of the weekend was Anthony Joshua's quick demolition job on Kevin Johnson. Even crazier is that Patrick Connor, boxing historian and contributor to The Fight City, and James Foley of Bad Left Hook welcome back Sam Sheppard of The Queensberry Rules, to give us a firsthand perspective of most of it. This coming weekend, Miguel Cotto wonkily defends the middleweight title against Daniel Geale at a catchweight on HBO, but not before Robert Guerrero takes on Aron Martinez for Premier Box

It might not all be great, or even good, but it's been...boxing. And there's been plenty of it, so that has been nice. Maybe the idea is that Haymon and Premier Boxing Champions hit us so fast and with so many fight cards that we don't stop to wonder whether the overall numbers are good for that venture, or where the money is coming from, etc. Some of us don't care about those questions anyway. This last weekend, we got a better-than-expected fight between James DeGale and Andre Dirrell on NBC that included some historical implications, and this coming weekend on Spike, it's weirdos Amir Khan and Chris Algieri providing us with...something. But don't forget the huge Sky card from London featuring Kell Brook vs Frankie Gavin, Jorge Linares vs Kevin Mitchell, Evgeny Gradovich vs Lee Selby, Anthony Joshua and more. There will be a lot of talking. Thanks for tuning in! (Photos: AP/PBC)

Here's one I heard on a record of Frankie Gavin and Paul Brock.  I think it's also on Frankie Gavin's flute LP which is one of the best commercial flute recordings I've encountered.  I don't spend all my time encountering commercial flute recordings.  If I did I don't know what my opinion would be.

Here's a reel named after a goat.  I suppose it's as good a think as any to name a reel after.  It's a popular tune and nice to play on the flute.  There are plenty of recordings of this.  As far as I remember Frankie Gavin has it on his flute record "Up and away" / "Croch Suas é".  The same goat is also to be found in lots of other places too.  It might even be a "Coat" in some of them.
