Kevin Barry is the author of four novels — Night Boat to Tangier, Beatlebone, City of Bohane (which was longlisted for the 2019 Booker Prize) and, most recently, The Heart in Winter. He's also the author of three short story collections, including That Old Country Music. The Heart in Winter was 25 years in the making. Unlike his other works, the story is set not in Ireland, but in Montana and Idaho in the late 1800s. Kevin joins Marrie Stone to chat about it. They talk about why he always finishes every piece of fiction, even when it's not working. He also shares his one guiding principle for unlocking his characters, finding the “tuning fork” for your novel, why dreaming and fiction come from the same place, his recommended book on writing, and so much more. Danelle Bohane is a wedding photographer, educator and a real force in our industry; her storytelling is emotional, honest and captured from a place of heart and generosity. To me, Danelle's approach is inspiring because she is able to hone in and capture a couple's connection to one another and their families with sensitivity, curiosity and respect. Danelle is a true artist at work and I encourage you to immerse yourself in her world as she shares her approach to storytelling.Lei xKEY TAKEAWAYSDanelle focuses on capturing connection through visual narrative, considering story-telling elements such as chapters, main characters, scene setting and locations including weather, the main story-line and sub storyline. Add dimension and juxtaposition to your images by playing with your lens choice; consider how wide you shoot an image (ie on a 24mm) and then the counterpoint such as a close up detail shot that is tightly cropped. Storytelling becomes more powerful when you harness your personal sensitivities, history and experiences in life to tell your couples story. Your approach as a photographer is a sum of all your parts and the relationships around you. Some of our biggest learnings and some of our best moments come from a place of imperfection. Today on the show I have Chris Bohane. Chris works for the NSW government in Australia, helping bridge the gap between employers and young people. He has a pretty unique insight into the big trends happening in the world of work, both within young people entering the workforce, and the needs of companies. Before all this however, he studied as an engineer and also worked in aviation finance. On this episode you will hear about; What most people get wrong about working in the public sector Why Chris finds gets so much meaning and energy from his work The big trends causing young people to struggle when transitioning into work Chris' advice for anyone moving country What the hell aviation finance and aircraft leasing is - we nerded out on this for potentially a bit too long... The morning habit Chris has been doing for 4 and a half years that brings him joy If you haven't listened to episode 17 with Joe Williams, once you've finished this episode, go back and give it a whirl. Joe has lived a fascinating life, where he's been a professional rugby player, a champion boxer, an author and is now the founder of a mental health education and suicide prevention business. He's also a beautiful story teller and has some great lessons for finding purpose in your life. "Zelo nerutiniran jezik je to in prvega pol leta sem iskala način, kako to sploh preliti, pravzaprav sem morala izumit jezik," izpostavi prevajalka. Živ in kljub nenavadni govorici zelo berljiv prevod romana Mesto Bohane je izšel pri KUD Police Dubove.
In this "return to form" Book XChange episode, your identical hosts recommend some of our recommended picks for first-time novels. There are so many instances of famous writers hitting home runs in their first trip to the plate - think Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird" or Stephen King's "Carrie" - but there are also many great examples of debut novels that fascinatingly reveal the developing talent of a future master of the craft. Jude and John both select novels contemporary and classic, and discuss why these books left a mark on us as readers. As always, a great pile of books find their way into this conversation, so we hope listeners come away with some new titles to dive into! Enjoy, and thank you as ever for listening... BOOKS DISCUSSED/MENTIONED/RECOMMENDED IN THIS EPISODE What John is currently reading/plans to read next: 'Young Skins: Stories,' Colin Barrett - 'Democracy in America, Vol. 2,' Alexis de Tocqueville - What Jude is currently reading/plans to read next: 'Love in the Time of Cholera,' Gabriel Garcia Marquez - 'There There,' Tommy Orange - Debut novels recommended by Jude: "Meditations in Green," Stephen Wright - "The Sin Eater," Alice Thomas Ellis - "Madame Bovary," Gustave Flaubert - "City of Bohane," Kevin Barry - "Dune," Frank Herbert - Debut novels recommended by John: "Then We Came to the End," Joshua Ferris - "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," James Joyce - "Wolf in White Van," John Darnielle - "Invisible Man," Ralph Ellison - "The Yellow Birds," Kevin Powers - Planned next episode of the Book XChange podcast: A sort of "Part 2" to this episode's discussion... we will take a deep dive into and review Native American writer Tommy Orange's acclaimed debut novel, "There There."

In his early novels City of Bohane and Beatlebone as well as his short stories, Kevin Barry showed clear signs of his prodigious talent as a writer. But the Booker Prize-longlisted Night Boat to Tangier is his best book yet – a modest masterpiece of a novel dripping with tenderness, remorse and laconic humour. Join Barry live at the Edinburgh International Book Festival 2019 with Peggy Hughes to hear about his two fading but irresistible Irish gangsters trying to piece together the shards of their shattered lives.
It is two decades since a bloody secessionist conflict on Bougainville was settled – first in a truce, and then in a peace agreement that deferred the question of the region’s future political status. In 2019, that question will be answered when the people of Bougainville vote on whether to become independent from Papua New Guinea. Ben Bohane is a photojournalist who has covered Asia and the Pacific for the past 30 years. He reported on Bougainville throughout the conflict and in the years since. He travelled to the Autonomous Region for a forthcoming Lowy Institute research paper to find out how the people of Bougainville are preparing for the coming referendum. The Lowy Institute hosted Ben Bohane for a conversation with Lowy Institute Research Fellow Shane McLeod, to discuss the prospects of a new nation being formed on Australia’s doorstep.
Kevin Barry is an award-winning Irish writer. His novel City of Bohane was the winner of the 2013 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. At the Canadian Association for Irish Studies 2019 conference, Kevin read from three of his works – including an extract from his latest book Night Boat to Tangier, available September 2019.

Author Kevin Barry reads from his novel ‘City of Bohane’, and takes questions from the audience. With an introduction by Aoife Walsh. Recorded in the Central Library on 20 May 2011 as part of its 'Dublin Revealed' series. Kevin Barry was born in Limerick in 1969 and now lives in Sligo. His first collection of short stories, There Are Little Kingdoms, won the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature in 2007. Fellow Irish short story writer Philip Ó Ceallaigh praised them as 'vibrant, original, and intelligent short stories that deserve to be read and reread and to outlast the strange years that made them'. He won the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for his debut novel City of Bohane. The novel is set in 2054 in the fictional city of Bohane in the West of Ireland, which is on its knees, infested by vice and split along tribal lines. Irvine Welsh has described Barry as ‘the most arresting and original writer to emerge from these islands in years’.

When the kitchen is always on the movie, how do you feed one of the biggest bands in the world? Today on _ Feast Yr Ears _, host Harry Rosenblum is on the line with Fiona Bohane, touring chef for the Dave Matthews Band. She relays that feeding the band members, riggers, drivers, stagehands, sound technicians and guests with restaurant quality food can be challenging and executing the food that is befitting the demands of a rigorous tour schedule is a feat all its own. Fold in the desire to minimize a negative environmental impact, use locally sourced goods and travel without refrigeration, and now, well, we have a show. Tune in for this backstage pass and hear Fiona chat about the typical menu, foraging, and being a new mom. “There’s a couple of vegetarians in the Dave Matthews Band, so we focus, as we should, on doing all vegetarian options… We do a pretty extensive buffet setup so we can pretty much hit everything.” [14:15] –Fiona Bohane on Feast Yr Ears
This week, we say hello to Kevin Barry, the author of one of our favourite novels of recent years, 'City Of Bohane'. We caught up with the Limerickman at the Shannon Rowing Club in the heart of his native city during the 'Make A Move' festival for a conversation which covered all the bases from freelance journalism, promoting raves and goths to Jim Kemmy, the people of Bohane, the art of writing and his new book 'Beatlebone' about John Lennon and an island in Co Mayo.
Summer has started, and there's lots to look forward to! Host Ryan Van Winkle takes a few moments to sit down with Irish author Kevin Barry, whose most recent collection of short stories, Dark Lies the Island, was published last year on the heels of his critically lauded novel, The City of Bohane. Barry is as much a poet in speech as he is on the page as he discusses where he finds his inspiration, how he got into writing short stories, how they've improved his writing and what we can expect from the dizzying, brutal world of Bohane. Then it's off to Charlotte Square to hear what this year's Edinburgh International Book Festival has in store. Find out what has Janet Smith, director of the children's programme, and Nick Barley, the festival director are most anticipating this year. Finally, hear from Richard Holloway, who reads his Treasures story--a touching saga of a painting that represents everything that's important to him. Have a minute, check out more stories from celebs and the public here.Downloads of Icelandic pop bands as inspiration, the joys of graphic novels, a glimpse into the future and the beauty of birds--it's all here, and more!
