I can't believe we're already through the first month of 2026, but here we are. This month, Ian started us off with László Krasznahorkai's: Sátántangó. The Hungarian author was last year's Nobel Laureate, so we decided that we'd better take a look at his oeuvre. Sátántangó is a bleak novel that describes the lives of the people living on an "estate". The people lie, cheat, and steal from each other, wallowing in their own problems, until Irimiás, a man they thought dead returns. The residents think that he's going to better their lives, but Irimiás is a conman. Sátántangó is a difficult text, especially only having read it once, but upon discussing the text, had more to say than we thought. We hope you enjoy our discussion! Filmstílust neveztek el róla, a The Guardian szerint ott a helye a legnagyobb ma élő rendezők között, visszavonulása sokakat meglepett. Tarr Béla híresen morcos interjúalany, minket is ledorongolt párszor, de ez nem tántorított el attól, hogy megkérdezzük, melyik volt az a pillanat, amikor rádöbbent, hogy a Sátántangó hétórás lesz, és mit szólt ehhez az egészhez az apja. Az is kiderült, miért szerepel minden filmjében egy táncjelenet, fél-e a haláltól, és hogy mi a legnagyobb baja Andy Vajna rendszerével.Nemrég töltötte be a hatvanat, ennek ellenére még mindig forradalmibb és radikálisabb, mint a mai fiatal rendezők - ezt ő maga mondja. We're two days late, but happy New Year! Last month's pick was Ronnie's and she chose: Simon Jimenez's, The Spear Cuts Through Water. A novel that we both found truly fascinating and difficult in equal measure. The Spear Cuts Through Water won the British Fantasy Award and Crawford Award, and is highly raved about it. The story follows warriors, Jun and Keema, as they escort an escaped goddess across the land while being hunted by the recently deceased emperor's sons. The story is told in a truly unique fashion, with a theatrical framing device, and the story bouncing around between first, second, and third person point-of-view. Honestly, there's a lot to unpack in this one, and we only scratch the surface. WSHU's Book Critic Joan Baum was curious about the Nobel Prize-winning author for literature, a Hungarian writer whose work has been described as challenging. Joan read a translation of a recent novel, a 400-plus tome filled with particle physics, Angela Merkel, fearful townspeople, Nazis, and Johan Sebastian Bach. Joan discovered a nuanced story with an unconventional style. Demanding yes! But well worth reading.

Bien que ce soit une nouvelle très réjouissante, les experts pensent qu'il reste de nombreuses questions à résoudre. Nous parlerons ensuite du prix Nobel de la paix, qui vient d'être annoncé. Cette année, la lauréate est María Machado, une figure centrale de l'opposition vénézuélienne aux gouvernements d'Hugo Chávez et de Nicolás Maduro. Madame Machado a dédié ce prix en partie au président Donald Trump, une décision dont nous discuterons ensemble. Esta novela de 2016 del autor László Krasznahorkai, ganador del premio nobel de literatura 2025 nos permite introducirnos en la historia del barón de Béla Wenckheim que regreso a su pueblo natal húngaro después de una vida de exilio en Argentina, donde dilapidó su fortuna, y conocer un poco la forma literatura del autor  húngaro.

En la primera parte del programa discutiremos sobre la actualidad. Comenzaremos con una noticia importante de Oriente Medio. El lunes, un grupo de líderes mundiales firmaron la primera fase del acuerdo de alto el fuego en Gaza durante una cumbre en Egipto, después de que los rehenes israelíes y los prisioneros palestinos fueran liberados. Hay sin duda motivo para celebrar, pero los expertos advierten que quedan importantes problemas por resolver. Continuaremos con el anuncio del Premio Nobel de la Paz. Este año, la ganadora es María Machado, una destacada líder de la oposición venezolana a los Gobiernos de Hugo Chávez y Nicolás Maduro. Aunque aceptó el premio, Machado dedicó el honor en parte al presidente Donald Trump. Discutiremos si esta dedicatoria fue apropiada. En el segmento de ciencia, hablaremos del Índice Mundial de Innovación que acaba de publicar la Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual. In Episode 30, DDSWTNP once again use the occasion of the Nobel Prize (which on October 9, 2025, was awarded to Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai) to talk about a prize Don DeLillo did win: the 2013 Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction. We dig into the award presentation and an interview he gave then about his whole career, from how he begins his novels and finds their structures, to the reading he did on a park bench in the 1950s, the influence advertising work had on his writing, and the inspiration he has found in the artistry of jazz and film.
