Heute, am 10. Dezember – traditionell am Geburtstag von Alfred Nobel – werden in Stockholm die diesjährigen Nobelpreise verliehen. Geehrt wird dort auch der Literaturnobelpreisträger László Krasznahorkai. Zeitgleich kommt heute auch ein neuer Roman von ihm heraus – oder vielmehr die deutsche Übersetzung von der bewährten Krasznahorkai-Übersetzerin Heike Flemming, denn in Ungarn ist "Zsömle ist weg" bereits 2024 erschienen. Der ungarische Tangotänzer Béla Tarr Der Ungar Béla Tarr ist einer der kompromisslosesten europäischen Filmemacher der Gegenwart. Sein bekanntester Film "Satanstango" ist über 400 Minuten lang, in "The Man from London" gibt es in zweieinhalb Stunden nur 29 verschiedene Kameraeinstellungen. Mit Mitte 50 hat der Meister der filmischen Langsamkeit entschieden, keine Filme mehr zu drehen - weil für ihn alles gesagt ist. Immer wieder hat sich Tarr die Freiheit genommen, radikal und drastisch zu sein. Und das, obgleich in seinem Heimatland Ungarn diese Freiheit gefährdeter scheint denn je. Immer wieder hat er für seine Filme eng zusammengearbeitet mit dem Schriftsteller und Drehbuchautor László Krasznahorkai, der in diesem Jahr mit dem Literaturnobelpreis ausgezeichnet wird. Der Schweizer Schriftsteller Peter Stamm umreisst in wenigen Worten ganze Leben. «Auf ganz dünnem Eis» heisst sein neuer Erzählband, in dem er Unspektakuläres spektakulär schildert. Ganz gewöhnliche Menschen am Wendepunkt. Einsame Menschen in der digitalen Welt. Die Figuren sind nahbar, beschrieben in knapper, klarer Sprache. Der Debutroman «ë» von Jehona Kicaj ist ein starkes Beispiel literarischer Vergangenheitsbewältigung. Seine Protagonistin ist mit ihren Eltern Ende der 1990er-Jahre aus dem Kosovokrieg nach Deutschland geflohen. Jetzt knirscht sie mit den Zähnen – so stark, dass ihre Zähne splittern. Das Schweigen fordert seinen Tribut. Der Roman führt vor Augen, wie wenig in Mitteleuropa über diesen Krieg Ende der 1990er-Jahre bekannt ist. «Eine Familie in Brüssel» ist ein Buch von Chantal Akerman, die vor allem als Filmemacherin berühmt war. Eine alte Frau berichtet darin in erlebter Rede über ihre Familie, die über die ganze Welt verstreut ist. Eine Familie, in der man kaum miteinander spricht, weil es Dinge gibt, die nicht berührt werden dürfen. Der atemlose Text ist auch eine Hommage an ihre eigene Mutter, die das Konzentrationslager von Auschwitz überlebte. László Krasznahorkai ist der diesjährige Nobelpreisträger. In seinen Werken beschreibt er regelmässig den Einbruch des Schreckens und der Gewalt in eine geschlossene Welt. Sein skurriler Roman «Herscht 07769» spielt in einer von Neonazis terrorisierten Kleinstadt im ostdeutschen Thüringen. Ein Gebäudereiniger sorgt sich um das drohende Weltende und wendet sich in verzweifelten Briefen an Angela Merkel.

Cette année, la lauréate est María Machado, une figure centrale de l'opposition vénézuélienne aux gouvernements d'Hugo Chávez et de Nicolás Maduro. Madame Machado a dédié ce prix en partie au président Donald Trump, une décision dont nous discuterons ensemble. Este año, la ganadora es María Machado, una destacada líder de la oposición venezolana a los Gobiernos de Hugo Chávez y Nicolás Maduro. Aunque aceptó el premio, Machado dedicó el honor en parte al presidente Donald Trump. Discutiremos si esta dedicatoria fue apropiada. In Episode 30, DDSWTNP once again use the occasion of the Nobel Prize (which on October 9, 2025, was awarded to Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai) to talk about a prize Don DeLillo did win: the 2013 Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction. We dig into the award presentation and an interview he gave then about his whole career, from how he begins his novels and finds their structures, to the reading he did on a park bench in the 1950s, the influence advertising work had on his writing, and the inspiration he has found in the artistry of jazz and film. This episode culminates on the title question, “So what?”, which is the revealing remark DeLillo remembers making upon seeing Americana in published form – and a key, we think, to understanding the humility, ambition, and restless work ethic that has driven his work over the five decades since. For the reader new to DeLillo, this interview and episode offer a good overview of his major concerns and literary techniques.
