Send us a textThe line between determination and recklessness blurs in this captivating episode featuring Brendan Bramford, a hunter whose life story spans continents and carries the weight of generations of hunting tradition. Born in Zimbabwe where his father worked as a professional hunter, Brendan's earliest memories include riding in Land Cruisers on safari before his family fled political violence that claimed their home.Brendan's storytelling prowess shines as he recounts his first black bear harvest in Washington—a tale that begins with him answering nature's call behind camp and spotting what he thought was a burnt stump until it started moving. With his pants literally down, he managed to make the shot of a lifetime, creating a hunting memory equal parts successful and embarrassing. The heart of the episode centers on Brendan's remarkable elk hunt where stubborn determination overcame physical limitations. Just three days before a planned five-day backcountry archery hunt, Brendan severely sliced his forearm open, requiring extensive stitches. Against medical advice and common sense, he proceeded with the hunt, hiking eight miles into the wilderness with an 82-pound pack and his arm freshly bandaged. When the moment came to draw on his first bull elk, the searing pain nearly derailed the opportunity—but Brendan persevered through multiple shots and tracking to harvest his first archery elk.The episode closes with sobering stories of Brendan's family history hunting dangerous game in Africa, including his father being run over by a Cape buffalo and a family friend's recent horrific mauling by a leopard. These tales serve as powerful reminders of nature's raw power and the risks some hunters accept in pursuit of their passion. Are you ready to make your own hunting stories? Please rate & review The Movies on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever else you listen to the show!--- APARTMENT 7A follows in 2024's tradition of independent directors helming prequels to successful horror franchises. We had THE FIRST OMEN and A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE. Now, Natalie Erika James takes the reins to ROSEMARY'S BABY, revealing the story preceding Roman Polanski's iconic 1968 movie. This story follows Terry Gionofrrio (Julia Garner), a New York dancer toughing her way through a marathon of auditions to try and land work. It's already difficult to stand out in New York, but doing so right after sustaining a severe foot injury? Impossible.Coping using pain pills, Terry goes on a bender, and after one particularly bad night, is scooped off the street by the wealthy, doting Castavets - Minnie (Dianne Weist) and Roman (Kevin McNally). The childless couple, drawn to the struggling artist, become her benefactors, offering her a gorgeous apartment in the opulent Bramford building: rent-free. (Daniel, stop drooling. You're embarassing yourself.)But as the days and weeks pass, with more pain pills, impossible auditions, and a one-night experience of which Terry can't quite place the details regarding how she ended up in another's bed, she encounters these bizarre nightmares, hallucinatory and threatening in scope. The once high ceilings of her apartment appear to slowly shrink in size. She swears she sees presences lurking round every corner. And the Castavets? They're a bit too friendly, a bit too doting, a bit too...possessive.Natalie Erika James' movie is surreal, theatrical. At times, I'd dare even say, pulpy. The camera bobs and weaves through musical sequences and hallucinations, borrowing from films such as THE RED SHOES and ALL THAT JAZZ. But the sinister beating heart lies in the real-life horror befalling Terry, one about bodily autonomy, sexual assault and an obsession for success that grows to prevail over one's own wellbeing. This grounds the movie so bitterly that I find the surrounding silliness to often be a welcome tonal reprieve from an otherwise all-too-real nightmare. Mix all this with rich, textural photography, a color palette of decadent chestnuts, mustards and moss greens & costumes that teleport me to 1960s New York. The result's a hazy, tense thriller that breathes new life into a nearly 60-year-old franchise, posing James as an exciting new voice in horror.---Follow The Movies on Twitter: @TheMovies_Pod and Facebook: The MoviesCredit Song: "Be My Baby"- The Ronettes

Sylvia takes Bob and Dustin back to 1968 to talk about the classic horror film Rosemary's Baby starring Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes. Desirous of starting a family, the young Catholic housewife, Rosemary Woodhouse, and her struggling actor husband, Guy, move into the Bramford, New York's iconic building which brims with unpleasant stories of obscure dwellers and ghastly occurrences. Before long, the young couple is befriended by their elderly and somehow eccentric next-door neighbours, Roman and Minnie Castevet--and shortly after--Rosemary unexpectedly gets pregnant. However, little by little, as the inexperienced mother becomes systematically cut off from her circle and friends, alarming hints of a well-planned and sinister conspiracy will begin to emerge, enfolding Rosemary in a shroud of suspicion and mental agony. In the end, why is everyone so conveniently eager to help; furthermore, why is Guy allowing it? Bob and Dustin did not take well to this movie.

Class is back in session and today we are looking at the classic horror film Rosemary's Baby.  It has quite a bit of Gothic influences, but what makes it such a great movie is how it blends those older motifs with the film style of the New Wave Cinema.  We talk all out what the New Wave is, how to spot it, and how it was better (or at least more naked) in France.   Don't forget to stop on by and join the Horror Pod Class Facebook Group!
