Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Excerpts from "A Reader's Manifesto", published by Arjun Panickssery on September 7, 2024 on LessWrong. "A Reader's Manifesto" is a July 2001 Atlantic piece by B.R. Myers that I've returned to many times. He complains about the inaccessible pretension of the highbrow literary fiction of his day. The article is mostly a long list of critiques of various quotes/passages from well-reviewed books by famous authors. It's hard to accuse him of cherry-picking since he only targets passages that reviewers singled out as unusually good. Some of his complaints are dumb but the general idea is useful: authors try to be "literary" by (1) avoiding a tightly-paced plot that could evoke "genre fiction" and (2) trying to shoot for individual standout sentences that reviewers can praise, using a shotgun approach where many of the sentences are banal or just don't make sense. Here are some excerpts of his complaints. Bolding is always mine. The "Writerly" Style He complains that critics now dismiss too much good literature as "genre" fiction. More than half a century ago popular storytellers like Christopher Isherwood and Somerset Maugham were ranked among the finest novelists of their time, and were considered no less literary, in their own way, than Virginia Woolf and James Joyce. Today any accessible, fast-moving story written in unaffected prose is deemed to be "genre fiction" - at best an excellent "read" or a "page turner," but never literature with a capital L. An author with a track record of blockbusters may find the publication of a new work treated like a pop-culture event, but most "genre" novels are lucky to get an inch in the back pages of The New York Times Book Review. The dualism of literary versus genre has all but routed the old trinity of highbrow, middlebrow, and lowbrow, which was always invoked tongue-in-cheek anyway. Writers who would once have been called middlebrow are now assigned, depending solely on their degree of verbal affectation, to either the literary or the genre camp. David Guterson is thus granted Serious Writer status for having buried a murder mystery under sonorous tautologies (Snow Falling on Cedars, 1994), while Stephen King, whose Bag of Bones (1998) is a more intellectual but less pretentious novel, is still considered to be just a very talented genre storyteller. Further, he complains that fiction is regarded as "literary" the more slow-paced, self-conscious, obscure, and "writerly" its style. The "literary" writer need not be an intellectual one. Jeering at status-conscious consumers, bandying about words like "ontological" and "nominalism," chanting Red River hokum as if it were from a lost book of the Old Testament: this is what passes for profundity in novels these days. Even the most obvious triteness is acceptable, provided it comes with a postmodern wink. What is not tolerated is a strong element of action - unless, of course, the idiom is obtrusive enough to keep suspense to a minimum. Conversely, a natural prose style can be pardoned if a novel's pace is slow enough, as was the case with Ha Jin's aptly titled Waiting, which won the National Book Award (1999) and the PEN/Faulkner Award (2000). If the new dispensation were to revive good "Mandarin" writing - to use the term coined by the British critic Cyril Connolly for the prose of writers like Virginia Woolf and James Joyce - then I would be the last to complain. But what we are getting today is a remarkably crude form of affectation: a prose so repetitive, so elementary in its syntax, and so numbing in its overuse of wordplay that it often demands less concentration than the average "genre" novel. 4 Types of Bad Prose Then he has five sections complaining about 4 different types of prose he doesn't like (in addition to the generic "literary" prose): "evocative" prose, "muscular"...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: rapid psychological growth, published by Chipmonk on June 6, 2024 on LessWrong. After a one-hour session with an exceptional counselor, I never suffered over that romantic incident again. Although, that's inaccurate, I also had 2x half-hour relapses in following month. After a few more sessions, I stopped doing depression. I brought the rest of my anxieties to that counselor over the following year, and… Radically effective and rapid psychological growth is possible with the right combination of counselor and method. But this is rare in 2024! Introspection that actually works It was while working with that counselor that, for the first time I could remember, I was able to actually do introspection. Before, whenever I had problems that seemed to be caused by my psychology, I would do the obvious thing and ask myself, "Why am I doing ? Why am I not doing ?" But that almost never worked. Usually I would get a response back like, "Because it's hard, I'm lazy, and it's just a bad habit." The same problems would come back again and again. Meditation didn't help me much either. But, for me, this counselor did. I would come to a session suffering from something, he would prompt me into feeling into my body about the issue - which is important because the body represents the unconscious - and then in the following Socratic conversation I would be able to make rapid and dramatic progress on my problem. Big anxieties gone in an hour. (For context, most of my problems then could be reduced to either "I feel anxious about X social situation." and/or "I am disliking myself and I'm suffering about that.") Learning to facilitate Later, I trained with that counselor and learned his method. As part of my training I facilitated for four volunteers, and they seemed to have similar results that I had: rapid and dramatic resolution of the issue they came with in one hour. (Caveat: I never spoke to these volunteers again, so I don't know if the effect lasted.) But the sixth time I facilitated for someone was different. I experimented: I let the conversation run as long as it needed to, and I proactively tried to target the deepest roots of his emotional insecurity using the full force of my psychological research. After our three-hour conversation, he said, This session was significantly more productive than the last 6 months of professional CBT and talk therapy I did combined. (For context, he was a CFAR alumni and also very experienced with Focusing.) We didn't do any other sessions, but I followed up after six months to ask how he was doing: I can't stress how much I appreciated that dialogue, it really made me feel better, and I think I have already expressed much of what it made me feel. […] The effectiveness of your presence defeated my incredulity, and then some. This seems not to be a fluke, either. I've facilitated for seven other people since then and four have had similarly large shifts, eg, Your communication style made it easy to identify and release limiting beliefs. I felt noticeably more secure after just a few hours. That said, the other three people I facilitated seemed to have smaller effects, though each claims it was positive. More information about my emotional security tune-ups is available on chrislakin.com/now Radically effective and rapid psychological growth is possible with the right combination of counselor and method! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Discussion about AI Safety funding (FB transcript), published by Akash on April 30, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Kat Woods recently wrote a Facebook post about Nonlinear's new funding program. This led to a discussion (in the comments section) about funding norms, the current funding bar, concerns about lowering the bar, and concerns about the current (relatively centralized) funding situation. I'm posting a few of the comments below. I'm hoping this might promote more discussion about the funding landscape. Such discussion could be especially valuable right now, given that: Many people are starting to get interested in AI safety (including people who are not from the EA/rationalist communities) AGI timeline estimates have generally shortened Investment in overall AI development is increasing quickly There may be opportunities to spend large amounts of money in the upcoming year (e.g., scalable career transition grant programs, regranting programs, 2024 US elections, AI governance/policy infrastructure, public campaigns for AI safety). Many ideas with high potential upside also have noteworthy downside risks (phrased less vaguely, I think that among governance/policy/comms projects that have high potential upside, >50% also have non-trivial downside risks). We might see pretty big changes in the funding landscape over the next 6-24 months New funders appear to be getting interested in AI safety Governments are getting interested in AI safety Major tech companies may decide to invest more resources into AI safety Selected comments from FB thread Note: I've made some editorial decisions to keep this post relatively short. Bolding is added by me. See the full thread here. Also, as usual, statements from individuals don't necessarily reflect the views of their employers. Kat Woods (Nonlinear) I often talk to dejected people who say they tried to get EA funding and were rejected And what I want to do is to give them a rousing speech about how being rejected by one funder doesn't mean that their idea is bad or that their personal qualities are bad. The evaluation process is noisy. Even the best funders make mistakes. They might just have a different world model or value system than you. They might have been hangry while reading your application. That to succeed, you'll have to ask a ton of people, and get a ton of rejections, but that's OK, because you only need a handful of yeses. (Kat then describes the new funding program from Nonlinear. TLDR: People submit an application that can then be reviewed by a network of 50+ funders.) Claire Zabel (Program Officer at Open Philanthropy) Claire's comment: (Claire quoting Kat:) The evaluation process is noisy. Even the best funders make mistakes. They might just have a different world model or value system than you. They might have been hangry while reading your application. (Claire's response): That's true. It's also possible the project they are applying for is harmful, but if they apply to enough funders, eventually someone will fund the harmful project (unilateralist's curse). In my experience as a grantmaker, a substantial fraction (though certainly very far from all) rejected applications in the longtermist space seem harmful in expectation, not just "not cost-effective enough" Selected portions of Kat's response to Claire: 1. We're probably going to be setting up channels where funders can discuss applicants. This way if there are concerns about net negativity, other funders considering it can see that. This might even lead to less unilateralist curse because if lots of funders think that the idea is net negative, others will be able to see that, instead of the status quo, where it's hard to know what other funders think of an application. 2. Molly Bolding is an education journalist, inclusion consultant and online educator, based in London. She has been teaching and tutoring online since 2018 but has also taught in classrooms in the UK and Japan. Molly mostly teached English, both to UK curriculums and as EFL, but has previously tutored History, Geography, Maths, Science, university applications and personal statements. She also provides educational services as part of her consulting work. Molly's first book, ‘The Online Tutor's Toolkit', is out with Routledge. It contains everything you need to know to get started as an online tutor: it covers the essentials of tutoring, choosing your tech and software, managing homework, and getting set up alongside detailed guidance focusing on each level of tuition. With techniques developed through research and first-hand experience, Molly explains exactly how to turn existing subject knowledge into effective tutoring for students of all ages in a variety of subjects.Divided into two parts, the first answers the logistical questions facing every new tutor such as: what equipment do I need? Where can I apply? How much should I charge? The second half focuses on how to tutor different age groups effectively and subject-specific areas including English, Maths, and Science, as well as the author's tried-and-tested ‘5 step' process for choosing a subject, assessing a student, and planning their first lessons. There is also information on how to support students writing personal statements and applying to university, as well as teaching English as a Second Language.Alongside tailored, up-to-date information on available software, hardware, exam specifications, and the online tutoring marketplace, the book contains a 10-week timetable of adaptable lesson plans so new tutors can get started immediately. Finally, there are two additional downloadable chapters which expand on less common subjects and another which includes a digital download of every resource from the book. With suggestions for resources, homework, and timings to support you at every stage, this is an essential read for anyone wanting to succeed as an online tutor. It's also insightful for teachers and TAs who want to develop more 1:1 techniques, home educators and parents who want to support their children with exams or university applications, and early career educators of all kinds.Websitewww.mollybolding.comSocial Media InformationTwitter: @themollyboldingInstagram: @themollyboldingLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/themollyboldingResources MentionedGood Will HuntingMark RobertsShow SponsorNational Association for Primary Education (NAPE) are planning a Primary Education Summit in March 2023. In Her Eyes

Truth is something that we say we want. Until it makes us uncomfortable. Or those around us uncomfortable. When I first decided that I needed to move away from my full-time job, I had some hard decisions to make. Despite the fact that I loved some of the things I was able to access and create in that position, there was no avenue for growth. I had to lean into the faith that I would find the support I needed to launch my own business. I always saw it as something different than a traditional interior design business. I had become accustomed to helping people that wouldn't necessarily be hiring an Interior Designer or Decorator to help them create the vision that they had for their home. I knew that I could use technology to reach more people and help them create spaces that inspired them without breaking the bank. When I took the leap, I only had a fuzzy image of what that might look like. And as the Universe always does when you allow it to, it brought me the perfect mentor to move toward a life of “health, wealth, and joy” as my guest's program promised. Business coach, Tobi Fairley is an unapologetic truth-teller. She believes in living a life aligned with who she is at her core. She transitioned from one of full-service Interior Design to a Business Coach for designers and creatives like myself. She has always been a visionary. Bolding embracing life has kept her at the forefront of both the Design Industry and the rapidly evolving use of technology to do more with her expansive skillset. Tobi Fairley is an innovation igniter, thought architect, and one of the leading voices on reimagining what it means to run a successful, creative business in an equitable and sustainable way... To read her extensive bio: visit the episode shownotes at: Podcast Webpage We follow the evolution of her personal business path full of gold nuggets of wisdom. She drops some serious truth bombs along the way. She reveals the moments that led to important mindset shifts that forged the path to who she has become as she creates opportunities for other creatives as she visions forward. You will be inspired (and maybe get a little teary as I did) when she shared how she faced the hard truths about herself in the process of supporting her daughter through the evil waters of Middle School and mean girls. It's a gut punch of self-loathing transformed into self-love. In this episode you will learn: Why the broken business model had to be drawn for a young businesswoman to create a successful life beyond the “business.” The strengths we have as women + creatives that aren't part of that original success blueprint. The fallout of following the wrong blueprint for success. The mindset shifts helped Tobi transform her personal success blueprint. The critical things her daughter taught her about herself How the difficulties that she was helping her daughter through prepared her to use her voice in a way that aligned with her personal values. What walking the walk REALLY means and what that looks like as a creative business owner We laughed. We got teary-eyed. We found power on the other side of this brutally honest conversation. I wish everyone could have seen the light in Tobi's face as she saw her current self through the eyes of 8-year-old Tobi. A magical moment of what it looks like when you are living a life aligned with your truth. It is a wish I have for everyone, especially the extraordinary hearts that listen to this podcast.

A few years after this, Kevin furthered his leadership journey at YMCA Detroit, Kevin wasn't sure of his path but knew that community was something he wanted to focus on. At YMCA Detroit, he was able to garner plenty of experience and focus on his passions while also helping the Detroit community. While there, he was also able to fully see all the good that YMCA could do for communities. After many years of leading different YMCAs, Kevin believes that it is essential and part of our responsibility to contribute to the community that we are a part of to better the lives of everyone that lives there. He has continued to do this throughout his career by heading up different YMCAs across the country and serving whichever community he finds himself in.While the methods of the YMCA have changed and continue to change, Kevin stays focused on their overall goal of being a pillar of support for the community. Whether it is in Detroit or Central Florida, Kevin's compassion for his workers and the community around him shines through in everything he does.More about our guest:Mr. Kevin Bolding is the President and CEO of the YMCA of Central Florida. Summary Volko Ruhnke (Website; Twitter) joins Andrew (Twitter; LinkedIn) to discuss his life and career in the CIA as an analyst and designer of board games. He is a former World Board Game Champion. What You'll Learn Intelligence Designing board games to teach CIA analysts Moonlighting as an award-winning board game designer while working at CIA Similarities and differences between intelligence analysis and board-games  The difference between role-play games and board-games in training national security professionals Reflections Humans are good models of humans  Volko's journey from Virginia to the CIA via William & Mary and the U.S. Army And more… Episode Notes  Volko Ruhnke is a helluva interesting guy. He grew up as an avid board gamer raised on stories of the French and Indian War, which led him to design the 2001 winner of the best pre-WWII boardgame Wilderness War. His time at the CIA after 9/11 then led him to design the 2010 winner of the best post-WWII boardgame Labyrinth, where players were immersed in the operational and ideological aspects of the Global War on Terror. It doesn't stop there, though, he has also designed a series of counter-insurgency games such as Andean Abyss, which focused on 1990's Columbia, and Fire in the Lake, a multi-faction treatment of the Vietnam War. While teaching a new generation of intelligence analysts, Volko combined both of his passions to help them understand the complexity and open-endedness of the real-world via board games. As an analyst himself, Volko looked at the Soviet & Russian military and counter-proliferation, before going on to be Deputy National Intelligence Officer for Science and Technology at the National Intelligence Council, and then on the Presidents Daily Brief (PDB) staff to brief cabinet level officials.  And… Volko is now a commercial board game designer, and you can get quite a few of his games here – but not all of them. One day historians, one day… Quote of the Week "Games allow you to get inside and operate the machine yourself and do experiments and pull a lever or push a button and see what happens. And because it's happening on the tabletop, rather than say, in a computer program, you, you can understand it very well. You can see exactly why what just happened. So, I became among others, a promulgator of, of that particular medium for teaching as well as for analysis." - Volko Ruhnke Resources SpyCasts Intelligence Analysis in the 21st Century - Mark Lowenthal Modern Intelligence Analysis: From Art to Science? Adrenaline is a trademark for a synthetic version of epinephrine or norepinephrine which is what I actually mean to say. 31:58 I am speaking about participants in the study and I say there are three, this is misleading. There are three groups of participants, that include those I listed, but they had several participants around the world varying between 1 and 30 per study done in each lab. 32:34 I mention the definition of narcolepsy is different than what I had learned, but here is a direct excerpt from the study by Konkoly et al., "We have recently shown that patients with narcolepsy had many advantages for lucid dreaming research. First, 78% of these patients were lucid dreamers, achieving an average of 8 lucid dreams per month without any specific training. Furthermore, narcolepsy, by definition, is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and abnormal transitions between wakefulness and REM sleep including rapid entry into REM sleep. These unique features allow collection of lucid REM sleep episodes in only a few day- time naps in a sleep lab. Of note, the overall structure of sleep is conserved in narcolepsy. Although some EEG features have been identified during narcoleptics' REM sleep (e.g., increased alpha power), none of these features were sufficient to differentiate REM sleep in narcolepsy from REM sleep in healthy controls" (2021). [Bolding and underline is added by myself]. 45:29 I talk about neuroplasticity and how it is like muscles, which is technically true, but I want to clarify that neuroplasticy has ebbs and flows throughout childhood and teen years and then in adulthood there are specific areas of the brain that still have the ability to grow new neurons. This is still a hotly debated area of research whether adult neuroplasticity truly exists. 48:22 I talk about how I think it was an epidemiologist that said that poop is in your coffee cup, it was a microbiologist. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ariel-castro6/message
