This week, we misinterpret an unbelievably depressing psychological thriller. But if we take a closer look at the events of the story, can we find positive, uplifting messages hidden beneath the surface? Tyrice says yes. Joe says absolutely not.

Three very accomplished producers of THE SKELETON TWINS, Jared Goldman (PALMER, THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME), Stephanie Langhoff (SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED) and Jennifer Lee (also an editor, she edited this film and has edited on RAMY), had a mini-reunion on the show. Much as the film is a loving celebration of family, it's clear that making the film was a family affair, in terms of how close the cast and crew were. Kristin Wiig and Bill Hader make this maybe the best movie about brothers and sisters ever. One of my favorite interviews ever on the podcast. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dan-benamor/support

In this episode the crew get together to discuss Netflix’s The Devil All The Time. The movie is an adaptation a book by Donald Ray Pollock of the same title. The characters are introduced in a post WW II setting and follows them through the 1950s. It’s one of those 6 degrees of separation type flicks. Everyone has crossed paths with each other by some means and at some point in the story, they just didn’t know it. It tackles a lot of familial topics like generational trauma, gender roles, religion, pregnancy, etc. With or without the conversation there is entertainment to be had and we suggested you all partake. Things don't go as expected. In what turns out to be one of the more polarizing movies reviewed on this podcast, things get a little bit contentious between Jacob and our anonymous co-host. This week we are reviewing the 2020 Netflix original The Devil All the Time starring Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Haley Bennett, Sebastian Stan, and Bill Skarsgård. This movie was directed by Antonio Campos. GD4AM: 67/100 IMDb: 7.1/10 Metacritic: 55/100 RT: 64% Sinister characters converge around a young man devoted to protecting those he loves in a postwar backwoods town teeming with corruption and brutality. Currently streaming on Netflix.

Three new movies this week, two of them from filmmakers we've been big fans of in the past. Even as all the big movies keep getting pushed back, movies are still coming out. First, it's Sean Durkin's "The Nest," with Jude Law and Carrie Coon. Then it's the star-packed "The Devil All the Time," with a lot of actors who play superheroes in other movies. We also discuss "Antebellum," with Janelle Monáe. When the tense marriage drama THE NEST debuted earlier this year at Sundance, there was understandable excitement about the return of director Sean Durkin, who hadn't directed a feature since 2011's "Martha Marcy May Marlene" (a Filmspotting Golden Brick nominee). Durkin doesn't disappoint in his return, giving his movie a pervasive sense of unsettling dread—but the real fireworks belong to stars Carrie Coon and Jude Law. In addition to that review, Josh recommends the divisive new horror thriller ANTEBELLUM starring Janelle Monae, and Adam shares thoughts on the not entirely successful THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME, directed by the very talented Antonio Campos and starring Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson. Plus, the Overlooked Auteurs Marathon continues with Chantal Akerman's JEANNE DIELMAN, which Adam and Josh both found more than deserving of its masterpiece status. 0:00 - Billboard 1:08 - Review: "The Nest" Noga Erez, "You So Done" 30:52 - Josh on "Antebellum" 35:01 - Adam on "Devil All the Time" 38:37 - Next Week / Notes 51:24 - Polls 1:01:13 - Overlooked Auteurs #3: "Jeanne Dielman" 1:25:15 - "Jeanne Dielman" Spoilers 1:34:34 - Outro Learn more about your ad choices.
