In this episode I go on a Style Journey with the world-renowned florist, author and designer, affectionately dubbed the UK's ‘Queen of Flowers'. . .the whimsically wonderful Willow Crossley. She is best known for her innate floristry skills and knowledge of botanicals and has worked with brands from Dior to Chanel, and private clients (including The Royal Family) in phenomenal spaces in Britain, Europe and America. She is also the author of four books: The Art of Handmade Living; Inspire: The Art Of Living With Nature; Flourish; and The Wild Journal: A Year of Nurturing Yourself Through Nature. Willow and I chat about her inspirations, growing up in the country, in the wilds of Wales… where she absorbed a love of colour. Back then all her pocket money went on magazines which she would devour and analyse with her stylish mother. She moved to London and studied at the London College of Fashion and went on to work at both Vogue and Tatler which certainly honed her aesthetic eye in an era when the editors were “super glam”. We talk bridesmaids dresses…Willow has been a bridesmaid an astonishing 14 times!…and then her wedding dress and her blister-inducing Louboutins…and then moving to Provence and spending the summers floating around in Edwardian cotton pieces that she had collected over time. Back in the UK and based in the Cotswolds with a burgeoning business and 3 boys, we discuss her eclectic style, her love of colour, her passion (borderline obsession) for sneakers, and the challenge of staying warm and stylish for her frequently chilly work, as well as her collaborations with the likes of Brora and her approach to sustainable floristry as well as fashion. Thank you @willowcrossleycreates …I so enjoyed our happy conversation xx

(00:00) Family Golf Trips This chapter of "The Weekend Golf Guys" is a lively discussion featuring John Ashton, Jeff Smith, and special guest Kelly Stenson. We explore Kelly's recent golf trip to Scotland with her 15-year-old son, emphasizing the joys and challenges of golfing in Edinburgh and surrounding areas. Kelly shares how they managed to play numerous rounds of golf, taking advantage of the extended daylight hours. We reflect on the value of traveling and playing golf with family, reminiscing about our own experiences and encouraging listeners to create similar memories. The conversation underscores the importance of seizing opportunities to bond over golf, whether it's abroad or within the United States. (13:09) Scottish Golf Trips This chapter takes us on a vivid journey through Kelly's recent golf trip to Scotland. We explore her experiences navigating the narrow, left-hand drive roads and balancing her love for golf with some brief, spontaneous sightseeing in Edinburgh and St. Andrews. Anecdotes about driving challenges and amusing moments with backseat drivers add a touch of humor. We also discuss memorable golf courses like Cruden Bay and Brora, each with its unique quirks, such as foggy weather and animals on the course. Additionally, we touch on the charm of local Scottish towns, their distinctive eateries, and the cultural immersion that comes with exploring beyond the greens. Lastly, we ponder the accessibility of golf courses in Scotland, comparing them to the public courses commonly found elsewhere. (25:15) Golf as a Unifier This chapter takes us on a journey through various experiences with golf, highlighting its unique ability to bring people together. From personal anecdotes about exploring the stunning landscapes of Montana and the allure of Banff and Lake Louise, we transition into the world of online golf competitions, where I reached number five in the world and built lasting friendships. The narrative continues with stories of real-life meetups, including an unforgettable event at Covered Bridge in Southern Indiana, and a touching moment when the mayor welcomed our group with open arms. We explore how golf unites people from all walks of life, whether through charity fundraisers or golf schools in South Carolina. The authenticity and vulnerability required in golf create a level playing field, breaking down barriers and fostering genuine connections. Finally, we reflect on the role of instructors in supporting players, especially when they struggle, ensuring everyone feels included and valued on the course. (34:20) Junior Golf Success and Bourbon Trails This chapter celebrates the achievements of young golfers, particularly highlighting Ava Bunker's impressive performance at the World Juniors in Pinehurst. We reflect on the joy and fulfillment that comes from working with junior players compared to the high expectations placed on PGA Tour players. We also discuss the potential for creating golf travel trails similar to the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky, such as the I-64 golf trail, to attract travel golfers and promote collaboration among golf courses. Additionally, we share personal anecdotes about tasting spirits, from bourbon in Louisville to whiskey in Ireland, and the acquired taste required for brown liquors. The conversation wraps up with a teaser about an upcoming golf question and a mention of travels to Scotland. (39:31) Bunker Play Techniques for Success This chapter explores the challenges and techniques of playing out of deep bunkers, specifically referencing experiences at iconic courses like St Andrews and North Berwick. We discuss the importance of using a lofted club, taking plenty of sand, and maintaining good technique to avoid common mistakes such as falling back or trying to lift the ball. Additionally, we share anecdotes about famous bunker struggles, including Bobby Jones' legendary difficulty at St Andrews, and provide tips like the "hinge and thump" method to improve bunker play. Whether you're a skilled bunker player or still learning, these insights aim to help you tackle even the most daunting bunker shots. (43:55) Greenside Sand Play Technique This chapter explores the importance of mastering greenside sand play in golf, emphasizing the key elements of quality sand and speed control. We share a unique analogy comparing bunker shots to removing a spider from a swimming pool—highlighting the technique of hitting behind the ball to let the sand propel it out. Additionally, we express gratitude for Kelly's return and her travel stories, and we encourage listeners to try the bunker tip the next time they find themselves in the sand. Enjoy this insightful and engaging conversation on improving your golf game.
Diageo's Brora Distillery in the Scottish Highlands celebrated the third anniversary of its revival this summer, and is now pouring new Brora single malt whisky on its tours. The venerable distillery underwent four years of restoration work before reopening in 2011, and its whiskies from the days before 1983 when the distillery closed are becoming harder to find. We'll talk with Brora's Andrew Flatt on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, taxes on alcohol are going up around the world, while one of the world's leading online whisky shops is back in the U.S. business again following its sale.
A really interesting conversation this week with Anna McLean (Crieff GC), David Gemmell (Brora GC) and David MacFarlane of Caddie Marketing. Crieff is located near Gleneagles and Brora near Royal Dornoch. The chat explores the benefits, downsides and opportunities of being located near a big Golfing venue which attracts a lot of tourist play. Over recent times, we've seen many courses across the UK benefit greatly from being near a Muirfield, St Andrews, Royal St Georges, Troon/Turnberry etc, but is it all it cracks up to be? We explore how it can grow green fee revenue and improve capital project expenditure, but on the flip side - what knock on effect does that have to the culture and member experience. David MacFarlane also talks about how clubs can positively use the opportunity to their benefit while also explaining what clubs should be doing in terms of positive promotion of their venue. Jim joins the podcast this week to talk about his recent book: When Revelation Comes. The book is a story about his travels through Scotland following the tragic death of his son Jordan. Jim is one of the leading authorities on West Coast golf in Scotland, and the various nine hole / honesty box courses that seem to have been walked into existence over recent centuries. The book is hugely emotional, uplifting, and interesting, as well as being a great read on golf travel to some of the more remote corners of Scotland. As the hours tick down in 2021, it is time to look back on the second half of the year at some of the sporting highlights we've featured on Balls & Whistles! In this one there was plenty of history made and titles won, not in the least by Invergordon's Tom Stoltman, who became the World's Strongest Man! Stoltman will now be looking to win it again, but he cannot hope to have the kind of longevity golfer Alistair Risk has had after he competed in his 50th consecutive Brora Five Day Open earlier this year. That was not the only highlight coming out of Brora though, as Steven Mackay stood down as manager of the football club after a shock 6-2 defeat to Fraserburgh. Ross County Cricket Club had a historic year, winning two trophies including the Senior Cup for the first time in 21 years, while Inverness Harriers Megan Keith and Kirsty Law continued to make their mark on the international athletes scene. There is not bigger stage in international sport than the Olympic Games, and Strathpeffer boasted a double Paralympic medalist thanks to cyclist Fin Graham's exploits in Tokyo, and it was also a huge year for Kinlochshiel Shinty Club who won their first ever Camanachd Cup - and then backed it up with the MacTavish Cup to complete the set of senior trophies. Inverness played host to the Scottish Squash Open in a landmark moment for the sport in the Highlands, meanwhile in rugby union, Jamie Dobie made his Scotland debut after impressing for Glasgow Warriors and being on the fringes of the squad for most of 2021, and Ross Sutherland launched a women's team for the first time. We then wrap up this episode with a look back at our Rainbow Laces special episode, hearing from LEAP Sport Scotland and Football v Homophobia's Sirri Topping about the campaign that ran earlier this month. For this episode of the podcast, I am joined by Elgin City's newest recruit Daniel Hoban. The young goalkeeper has had an incredible journey so far in the game and on the show we discuss starting life at Inverness CT before being loaned out to a range of Highland League Clubs such as Fort William, Strathspey Thistle and Brora Rangers. Daniel has had two spells at Forfar and Elgin and on the podcast we discuss playing for the Borough Briggs side as well as life at Station Park. 2020-21 was a big season for Daniel and we talk about being penalty shootout king in matches against Brora and Edinburgh City. We couldn't have picked two better guests with the recent news that Port Ellen, Brora, and Rosebank are set to reopen. Dr. Whisky and Boutique-y Dave are joined by none other than the legendary Colin Dunn of Diageo, and Gordon Dundas of Ian Mcleod Distillers. Past and future collide as the futures of these once lost distilleries are set to be rewritten, alongside Hunter S Thompson's Fear and Loathing, courtesy of Colin Dunn.
Brendan McCarron had a safe, secure job as Dr. Bill Lumsden's hand-picked "heir apparent" on the Glenmorangie and Ardbeg whisky creation team, but he was missing something. Earlier this year, he jumped at the chance to get back to distilling when Distell offered him the chance to become master distiller for its Bunnahabhain, Deanston, and Tobermory distilleries. Brendan did his first public appearances for Distell during Bunnahabhain's virtual Feis Ile events this past week, and we'll hear from him on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Islay's distilleries have starting to gradually reopen to tourists as pandemic-related health restrictions are easing, while whisky tariffs may be back on the table as the European Union tries to push Great Britain to follow through on key Brexit agreements. We'll also have the details on Uncle Nearest founder Fawn Weaver's mission to help other minorities succeed in the spirits industry and much more!
