Bourbon Tasting: Smoke Wagon

Ever wondered what happens when bourbon enthusiasts encounter a trendy whiskey that doesn't live up to the hype? Join us for a brutally honest tasting of Smoke Wagon's 120-proof store pick that leaves us wanting more – more depth, more age, and more complexity. This week's spirited conversation dives deep into what makes bourbon truly exceptional as we sample a young Smoke Wagon offering that proves high proof doesn't automatically translate to high quality. We don't hold back our reactions to this "nose hair burner" that prompts discussions about the importance of proper aging and barrel development. While some detect candy-like sweetness and caramelization, the overwhelming consensus is that this particular whiskey simply needs more time in the barrel to smooth out its rough edges. The whiskey world's marketing tactics come under scrutiny as we explore how Smoke Wagon, like many contemporary brands, sources its distillate from MGP in Indiana while building its brand identity in Las Vegas. This practice, common among whiskey companies that emerged during the bourbon boom of the past 15 years, reveals the fascinating story behind many of today's popular labels. Between sips and critiques, we share our passion for authentic whiskey experiences, planning future trips to Kentucky's Bourbon Trail and Scotland while debating what truly matters in the world of fine spirits. Whether you're a bourbon aficionado or simply curious about what makes a whiskey worth your time, this raw, unfiltered conversation offers insights that go beyond the bottle. What's your experience with highly-rated bourbons that left you underwhelmed? Share your thoughts and join the conversation as we continue our journey through Bentonville, bourbon, and business each week on The B-Team Podcast.

He explains why vacation rental markets aren't the only profitable options and breaks down key STR opportunities in less obvious locations, including college towns, military towns, state parks, and urban areas near hospitals.Throughout the episode, Kenny highlights how investors can leverage these markets to reduce risks, secure better returns, and manage seasonality more effectively. He also discusses exit strategies and the importance of adaptability when investing in these unique STR locations. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to expand their STR portfolio without getting caught in the vacation rental bubble. In This Episode You'll Learn:Why short-term rental markets go beyond vacation destinationsHow overlooked STR markets can offer better cash flow and stabilityWhat makes college towns a strong, steady investment choiceWhy military towns are ideal for short- and mid-term rental demandHow state parks have become an unexpected STR hotspotWhy STRs near hospitals can provide year-round bookingsHow to evaluate exit strategies in different STR marketsWhat investors should consider before entering these less obvious locationsAnd much more…Resources:Connect with Kenny on LinkedInFollow Kenny on Instagram

We reflect on the value of traveling and playing golf with family, reminiscing about our own experiences and encouraging listeners to create similar memories. The conversation underscores the importance of seizing opportunities to bond over golf, whether it's abroad or within the United States. (13:09) Scottish Golf Trips This chapter takes us on a vivid journey through Kelly's recent golf trip to Scotland. We explore her experiences navigating the narrow, left-hand drive roads and balancing her love for golf with some brief, spontaneous sightseeing in Edinburgh and St. Andrews. Anecdotes about driving challenges and amusing moments with backseat drivers add a touch of humor. We also discuss memorable golf courses like Cruden Bay and Brora, each with its unique quirks, such as foggy weather and animals on the course. Additionally, we touch on the charm of local Scottish towns, their distinctive eateries, and the cultural immersion that comes with exploring beyond the greens. Lastly, we ponder the accessibility of golf courses in Scotland, comparing them to the public courses commonly found elsewhere. (25:15) Golf as a Unifier This chapter takes us on a journey through various experiences with golf, highlighting its unique ability to bring people together. From personal anecdotes about exploring the stunning landscapes of Montana and the allure of Banff and Lake Louise, we transition into the world of online golf competitions, where I reached number five in the world and built lasting friendships. The narrative continues with stories of real-life meetups, including an unforgettable event at Covered Bridge in Southern Indiana, and a touching moment when the mayor welcomed our group with open arms. We explore how golf unites people from all walks of life, whether through charity fundraisers or golf schools in South Carolina. The authenticity and vulnerability required in golf create a level playing field, breaking down barriers and fostering genuine connections. Finally, we reflect on the role of instructors in supporting players, especially when they struggle, ensuring everyone feels included and valued on the course. (34:20) Junior Golf Success and Bourbon Trails This chapter celebrates the achievements of young golfers, particularly highlighting Ava Bunker's impressive performance at the World Juniors in Pinehurst. We reflect on the joy and fulfillment that comes from working with junior players compared to the high expectations placed on PGA Tour players. We also discuss the potential for creating golf travel trails similar to the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky, such as the I-64 golf trail, to attract travel golfers and promote collaboration among golf courses. Additionally, we share personal anecdotes about tasting spirits, from bourbon in Louisville to whiskey in Ireland, and the acquired taste required for brown liquors. The conversation wraps up with a teaser about an upcoming golf question and a mention of travels to Scotland. (39:31) Bunker Play Techniques for Success This chapter explores the challenges and techniques of playing out of deep bunkers, specifically referencing experiences at iconic courses like St Andrews and North Berwick. We discuss the importance of using a lofted club, taking plenty of sand, and maintaining good technique to avoid common mistakes such as falling back or trying to lift the ball. Additionally, we share anecdotes about famous bunker struggles, including Bobby Jones' legendary difficulty at St Andrews, and provide tips like the "hinge and thump" method to improve bunker play. Whether you're a skilled bunker player or still learning, these insights aim to help you tackle even the most daunting bunker shots. (43:55) Greenside Sand Play Technique This chapter explores the importance of mastering greenside sand play in golf, emphasizing the key elements of quality sand and speed control. We share a unique analogy comparing bunker shots to removing a spider from a swimming pool—highlighting the technique of hitting behind the ball to let the sand propel it out. Additionally, we express gratitude for Kelly's return and her travel stories, and we encourage listeners to try the bunker tip the next time they find themselves in the sand. In this episode Will and (minus) Neil sit down with the "Beattyville Hillbillies!"  Donnie Benton and Teresa Mays are the founders of the Backwoods Moonshine Museum in Appalachia Kentucky - a stop on the "Moonshine Trail."  While the Bourbon Trail is often thought of when thinking Kentucky, the Moonshine Trail is more on the Appalachian side of the state and speaks to the rich heritage and history moonshine has in Appalachia.  Take a listen as Donnie and Teresa talk about starting the museum and their history with the spirit...not to mention their stint on "Moonshiners."  AMW has spoken before about the importance of festivals in small town Appalachia; hear from the "Beattyville Hillbillies" as they talk about a fairly new (in its fourth year) festival that the history of moonshine has brought to their small town.  You might even hear Donnie speak of "knowing a guy that knows a guy."  If nothing else, check 'em out - as they admit, it's truly in the backwoods!  Also, don't forget about the #AppBiz(s) of the week: Barrel House Distilling Company; Regeneration Distilling Company; Kentucky Mist Distillery; Kentucky Mountain Moonshine; and Pauley Hollow Distillery! I never used to go to photography conferences. It's not that they didn't interest me, it's just that none of them cover my genre of music photography. WPPI is all about weddings and portraits, and while Imaging USA seems to cover a bit more, it doesn't go anywhere near concerts. Still, a few years ago I went to WPPI with a friend, to cover it on the show, and I found out that I didn't care what the conference covered. What I enjoyed the most was meeting other photographers after hours to talk shop. Since then, I have been to all but one WPPI, and a few of the old Photoshop World conferences - which I really miss. That is all to say that no matter what you think of conferences, the networking side is almost always worth the trip. This past January I decided to try out my first Imaging USA, partly because it was in Louisville, KY, the home of the Bourbon Trail. The conference, for me, was a huge success. I was able to hang out with some old friends, and meet a few new ones, like today's guest. While at Imaging I stopped by to say hello to my friends at the Platypod booth, and while there I met fellow Platypod Pro Lenworth Johnson. Lenworth is a commercial fashion and beauty photographer based in Houston, TX, and originally from Jamaica. We talked a bit at the conference, and I browsed through his site, and knew right then I needed to get him on the show. My original thought was to cover one of his amazing fashion or beauty shots, since that's what he's mostly known for, but that would have been obvious. Instead I decided we should focus on a tangential part of his work. Lenworth also shoots fashion related product photography, like perfumes and makeup, and I have never really had that genre on the show before. The challenges of product photography are quite varied, from holding highlights on reflective surfaces, to subject separation and color accuracy, and Lenworth tackles these challenges so well I thought he could help you and I get a better sense of this difficult subject matter. His work has been honored with multiple awards: 2019 Guru Awards Photoshop World Award 2020 Silver Advertising Award MIFA Award 2022 Gold Commercial Photography-Product MUSE Awards 2023 Gold People Photography-Portrait MUSE Awards 2023 Gold Commercial Photography-Fashion MUSE Awards As a KelbyOne instructor, Lenworth teaches a few classes, including Fashion & Beauty, lighting, and getting published. Small community hospitals are the backbone of healthcare for most of the country, even today in this era of sprawling healthcare organizations and massive mergers. But while they're critical to the health of our nation, resources are often scarce, and CDI is no exception. Jennifer Cummins, BSN, CCDS, is one of just two CDI professionals covering a 222-bed not-for-profit community hospital in rural Kentucky. Advanced technology and sophisticated AI are not in her toolbox, but that doesn't mean Jennifer doesn't take pride in her work. In fact, she and her colleague are making a big impact with some old-school methods. Their CDI work helped the hospital earn the title of one of the 100 Greatest Community Hospitals in America. Proof that determination, creativity, and teamwork are still more important than tech, even in this day and age. On this show we cover: • Jennifer's origin story—ICU and ER nurse, finding her way into CDI with the help of a nursing colleague • CDI program--when it began, focus of reviews, and success metrics • Conducting chart reviews with a basic encoder, books, creativity, and the help of other departments • Logistical challenges as a small community hospital, including weekend coverage and PTO in a department of two, and rising to meet new initiatives with limited resources • Expansion to mortality reviews: Identifying the need, process, early successes, and conducting deeper, more intensive reviews • Fun things to do in Kentucky (aka., Bourbon Trail).
