Burnout: The Silent Symphony of Stress! E:319 with Dr Roelof Joe Stammeijer

In the world of music, where precision meets passion, the shadow of burnout looms large. It's a condition that doesn't discriminate, affecting professionals from all walks of life, including musicians who turn their passion into their livelihood. I"Talking Flutes Revisited," host Clare Southworth and her guest, Dr. Joe, a psychiatrist, orchestrate a discussion on the all-too-familiar concept of burnout. The podcast opens with a soothing invitation to join the conversation over a cup of tea—a metaphorical break for anyone who's felt the weight of their emotional reserves depleting. Dr. Joe delves into the intricacies of burnout, distinguishing it from its more immediate counterpart, stress. Burnout, he explains, is the long-term consequence of enduring stress without adequate recovery, whether stemming from work, personal relationships, or financial burdens. Listeners are taken on a journey through the symptoms of burnout, categorised into four areas: high activation symptoms like irritability and restlessness, low activation symptoms such as fatigue and low mood, bad coping mechanisms including increased substance use, and physical manifestations like headaches and aches. For musicians, these signs might translate into a lack of motivation to practice, a decrease in performance quality, or a disinterest in previously enjoyed activities. The episode strikes a chord with its discussion on the pressures of social media and the unrealistic expectations it can impose on artists. Claire reflects on her own experiences, highlighting the importance of mental health discussions in today's society, especially within the rigorous and often isolating field of music. Dr. Joe doesn't just leave listeners with a diagnosis; he offers a treatment plan. He emphasises the importance of recognising burnout and engaging in open conversations about mental health. Identifying activities that deplete or replenish emotional reserves is crucial, as is finding joy in the craft again. Whether it's revisiting a beloved piece or focusing on a single bar that brings happiness, the key is to take small, manageable steps. In a world that often prioritises success over well-being, this episode serves as a gentle reminder to care for oneself. Dr. Joe encourages finding balance through simple yet effective measures like sleeping well, eating healthily, and exercising. For those who need more support, he provides resources like Mood Juice and the Campaign Against Living Miserably. By the end of the podcast, listeners are left with a sense of hope and a toolkit to navigate the complexities of burnout. The message is clear: you don't have to reach a breaking point to seek help or make positive changes. Whether you're a musician or not, this episode resonates with anyone who's felt the crescendo of stress in their lives. So, take a moment, pour yourself a cup of tea, and listen to "Talking Flutes Revisited." It might just be the interlude you need to find your rhythm again. 'Talking Flutes', 'Talking Flutes Extra', 'Bitesize' and 'Revisited' are podcast productions by the TJ flute company.  For more information https://tjflutes.com

As this goes live there is just over three weeks to my adventure to the Loch Ness Marathon and of course it is on the same day – October 2nd – as the London Marathon so shout out to regular listeners Carrie Gleinster, Andy Williams and Craig Beale who are taking part in London.Shout out also to regular guest Tracy Waite who is putting together an amazing project called Paddy's Mill Wellness Centre which is going to help a lot of people in West Cornwall get active. Tracy has been running a crowdfunding page but that closes on September 9th which is the day after this episode comes out but if you want to get involved then you can contact Tracy through her Facebook page.I also mentioned in the episode the Bristol Running Show which is on November 26th at the Ashton Court Estate. I will be there with the podcast recording snippets from visitors for future episodes as well as offering my book '12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon' the proceeds of which will be going to the Children's Hospice South-West.So what are your running goals for 2023?In episode 95 we heard from Jacob Prothero who despite having had Crohn's disease for 17 years is tackling the Manchester to Liverpool ultra in early April and I also mentioned Steve Perkins who is taking on the Isle of Wight ultra at the end of April. For both Jacob and Steve these are big challenges as both of them have never tackled anything like this before so if you want to support them here are links to their just giving pages with Jacob raising money for Crohn's disease and Steve for CALM which is the Campaign Against Living Miserably. And if you need a bit of a boost to your confidence to enable you to put yourself in the mix for undertaking a similar big challenge then have a listen to my other podcast –  Better Presentations More Sales - episode 233, the latest one, with entrepreneur Kaye Reeves. At the beginning of January 2023 I will be running an episode featuring listeners running goals for 2023 so I will let you know nearer the time all you need to do is record a couple of minutes on your voice memo on your phone and send it to me to be included. This is episode 98 of the Running 44@60 podcast. The Proper Mental Podcast

Welcome to Proper Mental Episode 14! This week my guest is Shareefa J! Shareefa J is a presenter, model and mental health campaigner.  She is at the forefront of promoting body positivity and race diversity in the fashion and advertising space. A couple of years ago, Shareefa used the hashtag #UOKHUN to connect with her followers and encourage them to speak up about how they were feeling and the overwhelming response to this led her to contact CALM and eventually become one of their mental health ambassadors. She is also a huge advocate for the power of running and does a lot of work to encourage everyone who wants to be a runner to give it a go regardless of gender, size or any other reason that puts people off going for a run.  She has featured on the cover of several running magazines to spread this message. Shareefa and I chat about the need for a mental health A&E, the good and the bad bits of social media, emotional maintenance and the long-term side effects of the pandemic on mental health. Shareefa's positivity about everything is really infectious and it was a lot of fun to chat to her!  We cover an amazing number of topics during the conversation and it was great for me to learn a bit about the body positivity movement and the modelling industry as neither of these things were previously on my radar. You can connect with Shareefa via Instagram @shareefa_J and @shine4diversity. You can also connect with CALM via social media @calmzone or read about their work with Shareefa at this link: Meet Shareefa: CALM's newest ambassador and body positivity champion  - Campaign Against Living Miserably (thecalmzone.net) You can connect with me and the podcast @propermentalpodcast and I'd love to hear what you thought of this, or any other episodes!  I'm always happy to chat. Thanks for listening!  Enjoy!

'Life Happens' is the podcast that is empowering businesses and individuals to build mental fitness and make positive changes to their everyday lives. Dan Keeley is one of the UK’s most powerful motivational speakers and mental health activists, encouraging us ‘to have courageous conversations together about the things that really matter’. In 2012 he suffered from a bad episode of poor mental health and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In this interview, we chat to Dan about stripping his life back to the bare essentials in order to build it back up, and reassessing his priorities. In the process, he learned to give himself permission to put himself first, focus more intentionally on his health, passions, relationships and growth, and do so in a balanced way. Since then, he has been on a journey of self-discovery, using those experiences to fuel a passion for helping others through his #AREWEOKUK mission, which is a game-changing social movement that aims to inspire everyone to speak up. Dan is also a champion of active lifestyles and the power of the outdoors to improve our wellbeing. An endurance runner, in 2017 he ran 1,250 miles from the Colosseum in Rome all the way to the London Eye to raise over £15,000 for the Campaign Against Living Miserably. We hope you enjoy the episode. If you do, please make sure you subscribe and share it with your friends, and check back for more great interviews coming soon.
