In this episode, we sit down with Bruce Cardenas, a man whose life has been defined by a commitment to service and excellence. Bruce owns a top level executive security business and has protected some of the biggest stars in Hollywood, top Business Executives, and even the President of the United States. He is also the former Chief Communications Officer at Quest Nutrition, a billion dollar company which specializes in protein bars. Bruce's journey began in the United States Marines, where he first began pursing his dream of becoming a police officer. After visiting California and attending a Career Day, Bruce applied for the LAPD and got in. His experience in the LAPD provided invaluable insights into the security landscape and enabled him to build an exceptional team that would go on to safeguard prominent figures and high-profile events worldwide. He would eventually befriend Shannan Penna, creator of the quest bar, and help her build Quest Nutrition. Eventually, Bruce's expertise as the Chief Communications Officer at Quest Nutrition played a pivotal role in the company's success, leading up to its landmark sale for over a billion dollars. Today Bruce is still working as a reserve for the LA County Sheriff's Dept. and even gets to escort the President from time to time. He still works in private security, he's still helping build companies in the protein snacks market, and now he is writing a book. When Harry Slatkin and his wife, Laura, built Slatkin & Co., they disrupted the fragrance industry by making home fragrances accessible to a wider demographic. Slatkin sold Slatkin & Co. to Limited Brands, which owns Bath & Body Works, in 2005. But he kept his role as executive chairman and president of the company, and eventually took over the entire home fragrance division. After growing the business to $1.3 billion, Slatkin stepped down from his role in 2012. Today, the company does $2.3 billion in home fragrance sales, according to Slatkin. 'When I started, I was entrepreneurial at Limited Brands. [Lex Wexner] let me set up offices in New York, and I had my own team," Slatkin said on the latest episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. "As soon as we started hitting $400 million and $500 million [in sales], I was becoming a part of these big teams, and the entrepreneur and the excitement of it starts to leave. … It was no longer what I could call hands-on, for me. I decided, after getting to a billion dollars [in revenue], that it was time for me to step down." Slatkin consulted for Bath & Body Works for three years after selling his company, but at the same time, he pivoted into fashion through a partnership with Tommy Hilfiger. The duo went on to acquire apparel brand Belstaff in 2011. Slatkin is now focused on growing the company's distribution for its current offerings, with no plans to expand to more categories in the near future.

With Franchise Euphoria’s upcoming series: How to Build an Enduring and Long-Lasting Franchise, Josh thought it was fitting to call back to one of the podcast’s archived episodes from 2018 that features an interview with Rick Cesari, a brand guru and pioneer in brand-response advertising, who came on Franchise Euphoria to highlight best practices in building your brand identity. Rick Cesari has been a pioneer in Brand Response advertising since the early 1990s. He helped create the concept of 'sell while you brand' and has been the force behind the creation of many of today's top consumer brands such as, The Juiceman, Sonicare, The Breadman, The George Foreman Grill, OxiClean, Clarisonic, Rug Doctor, Momentus Golf and many others. Rick has helped take companies like GoPro from start-up to over a billion dollars in sales in just a few short years. He is the author of "Buy Now, Creative Marketing that gets Customers to Respond to You and Your Marketing," and his book, “Building Billion Dollar Brands,” debuted in Summer 2018 just after this interview was originally published. Key Takeaways: [0:05] Welcome to Franchise Euphoria, the podcast that takes a deep dive into specific topics related to franchising. Franchise Euphoria exists to help individuals who are trying to grow their business through a franchise or franchise-like model. [0:49] Josh introduces today’s callback episode: Building Your Brand with Rick Cesari. [2:54] Josh welcomes Rick to Franchise Euphoria. [3:56] Rick has worked with several big-name companies, but they were not as large as they are today when Rick began working with them and using direct to consumer marketing. [5:12] Rick’s experience with DTC marketing started with his passion for health and nutrition where he conducted a live “infomercial” where there was a live audience listening to their presentation on juice; by the end of the 90-minute presentation, the audience was more than ready to buy. [7:24] His experience has shown that it is most effective to focus on the benefits of the product to the end user that you are trying to market to. [9:52] The difference between brand advertising and brand response is that there’s always some type of offer where you’re asking people to respond. You have to put out a promotion that gives them a reason to respond. [11:24] These concepts can be applied to service-based products as well, not just physical products. You can do this through authentic testimonials of happy customers. [18:20] There are some marketing basics Rick likes to implement such as starting and ending each ad with a brand logo. Also, advertising giveaways can help drive people towards your products. [20:17] Tactics for reaching and targeting consumers has changed somewhat over the years. While you can still reach a mass-audience through DTC marketing, there are many mediums that are cheaper and effective to reach directly to consumers. [22:45] The key to building any brand is finding your unique selling proposition and pushing it toward your audience. [24:04] Offering a very liberal money-back guarantee to get someone to try your product or service is a great way to grab the attention of your consumers. [26:12] The priority and lifeblood of any business is sales. Focusing on how you can get sales in the door will build your brand as your business is growing. [29:24] Most of your company’s branding happens after the sale which is formed based on the customer experience. [30:14] Rick’s book “Building Billion Dollar Brands” is coming out on August 1, which covers many of the topics discussed in today’s interview. [31:39] Now, Rick still works on “fun,” hands-on projects with companies to build their brand, but mostly focuses his time on writing and speaking about brand building. [34:57] Thanks for listening, and please, reach out to Josh anytime through email at josh@indyfranchiselaw.com. If you enjoyed this interview, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts. Rick Cesari has helped major brands from GoPro to George Foreman build billion-dollar brands through Brand Response advertising and strategic video marketing. His newly-released book, Building Billion Dollar Brands, aims to put valuable knowledge of the big brands into the hands of inventors, small business owners, entrepreneurs, Amazon sellers and others to help create innovative, successful marketing campaigns. A bestselling author, speaker, consultant, and marketing & brand strategy guru, Rick is bringing his expertise to us today to talk branding, video marketing and more. Key Takeaways: [0:22] Today’s episode of Franchise Euphoria is brought to you by The Franchise 5 package. Head over to franchiseeuphoria.com/franchise5 to learn more! [1:01] Josh introduces today’s guest, Rick Cesari, author of Building Billion Dollar Brands. [2:08] Josh welcomes Rick Cesari back to Franchise Euphoria. [3:28] Rick gives us a recap of some of the businesses he’s worked with over the years. [5:02] Rick’s new book is really about the lessons he learned from working with these companies over the years, and how he identified patterns of tactics that many of them used to grow their brand. [6:32] The first tactic is what Rick calls “always upsell,” which may seem obvious, but is often overlooked when people are faced with customers. [8:12] Josh chimes in that the easiest way to make a sale is to go to people who have already purchased. [9:55] For the second tip, Rick suggests it’s important to learn from other people’s experiences, specifically through books published by people who have achieved the success you want to see. [12:05] Tactic three covers the “Blue Ocean” strategy, which is one that Josh used himself when developing his law practice. [14:56] “If you try to please everybody, you end up pleasing no one.” [15:38] Josh introduces tip four as “the number one rule in sales.” [17:45] Tactic five covers the concept of educating your consumer, which is something Rick really focuses on when launching a new product or service. [21:16] The sixth tactic is establishing credibility with your target audience, the underlying reason for which is being people will always be skeptical of advertising until you give them a reason to trust you. [24:05] Tip seven, using key opinion leaders and influencers, goes hand in hand with the sixth tactic as it is a great way to help establish the credibility of your business. [24:13] Josh notes that tip eight, knowing your customer, is one of the most important things a business owner can do. [25:09] One of the first things Rick does with new clients is set up interviews with proven clientele that usually ends up being testimonial collateral for their business. [26:14] A timeless strategy Rick has employed over the years, which is his tenth tip is having powerful before and after demonstrations. This stems from Rick’s background of using direct response television ads. [28:20] For Rick’s final tip, he suggests the importance of “making the customer the hero.” [32:27] If you want to learn more about Rick Cesari or purchase his book, you can visit www.RickCesari.com. Rick Cesari is a branding guru who has worked with Fortune 500 and other major companies such as Clorox, Microsoft, GoPro and The George Foreman Grill to build billion dollar brands through direct response advertising and video marketing. He’s also a celebrated speaker, consultant, and bestselling author. Rick’s upcoming book, “Building Billion Dollar Brands”, was written to put big-brand knowledge into the hands of small business owners, entrepreneurs, inventors, and other independent sellers. Rick’s original plan was to attend dental school, but his career path changed when he took a real estate seminar and his first sale made him $12,000. He transitioned into working with the seminar business and discovered both his innate marketing skills, and the marketing power of direct response videos. Rick leaned into his newfound talents and used direct response TV marketing to promote the Juiceman® Juice Extractor and the Sonicare® toothbrush. He went on to help redesign and remarket a taco maker device into the George Foreman Grill, and the rest is history. Now he works to teach others the marketing skills and strategies he originally pioneered. ————— From the Sonicare® toothbrush to The George Foreman Grill, from OxiClean to GoPro cameras, every huge invention got to where it is today through the power of marketing. But how do you take the great idea you had in your garage one day and turn it into a billion dollar brand? That’s easy; the answer is Rick Cesari. Rick is the marketing guru behind the aforementioned products and many more. Rick was one of the first people to identify the overwhelming potential of direct response advertising, and it was his vision that turned those brands into the easily recognized brand names they are today. In this episode of Absolute Advantage, Rick shares wisdom from his upcoming book, Building Billion Dollar Brands: Spectacular Successes & Cautionary Tales: The Lure Of Brand Response From Both Sides Of The Marketing Fence. He also discusses how direct response marketing works, what benefits it offers, and what five steps are necessary to turn your marketing into an explosive force. By understanding what turns potential customers into loyal fans, by knowing how to outsource your marketing efforts to the right partners, and by turning your marketing efforts into a call to action, you can build your own billion dollar brand. He is the author of "Buy Now, Creative Marketing that gets Customers to Respond to You and Your Marketing," and his newest book, “Building Billion Dollar Brands,” is due out in Summer 2018. Key Takeaways: [0:22] Today’s episode features Rick Cesari, a brand guru and pioneer in brand-response advertising. [2:00] Josh welcomes Rick to Franchise Euphoria. [3:02] Rick has worked with several big-name companies, but they were not as large as they are today when Rick began working with them and using direct to consumer marketing. [4:18] Rick’s experience with DTC marketing started with his passion for health and nutrition where he conducted a live “infomercial” where there was a live audience listening to their presentation on juice; by the end of the 90-minute presentation, the audience was more than ready to buy. [6:30] His experience has shown that it is most effective to focus on the benefits of the product to the end user that you are trying to market to. [8:58] The difference between brand advertising and brand response is that there’s always some type of offer where you’re asking people to respond. You have to put out a promotion that gives them a reason to respond. [10:30] These concepts can be applied to service-based products as well, not just physical products. You can do this through authentic testimonials of happy customers. [17:26] There are some marketing basics Rick likes to implement such as starting and ending each ad with a brand logo. Also, advertising giveaways can help drive people towards your products. [19:23] Tactics for reaching and targeting consumers has changed somewhat over the years. While you can still reach a mass-audience through DTC marketing, there are many mediums that are cheaper and effective to reach directly to consumers. [21:51] The key to building any brand is finding your unique selling proposition and pushing it toward your audience. [23:10] Offering a very liberal money-back guarantee to get someone to try your product or service is a great way to grab the attention of your consumers. [25:18] The priority and lifeblood of any business is sales. Focusing on how you can get sales in the door will build your brand as your business is growing. [28:30] Most of your company’s branding happens after the sale which is formed based on the customer experience. [29:20] Rick’s book “Building Billion Dollar Brands” is coming out on August 1, which covers many of the topics discussed in today’s interview. [30:45] Now, Rick still works on “fun,” hands-on projects with companies to build their brand, but mostly focuses his time on writing and speaking about brand building.
