Yes, I realise how horrible the grammar is in that title; I don't care. Surprising, I know. Shannah Kennedy and Collen Callander have just released a new book called ‘Elevate: Unlock Your Extraordinary Potential' and apart from the great discussion we had about their book, work and philosophy, what I loved about these ladies is that, at a time when some people are starting to slow down and wind down (in their fifties), these two powerhouses are building new businesses products and programs, breathing life into new ideas and creations, learning new things, writing new books, falling down, getting up, taking chances and inspiring others (of all ages) to do the same. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

MUSIC is not a GENRE

SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE When David Bowie died five years ago, I righted a big wrong. I'd been aware of him since the 1970s, knew some of his hits & ‘80s music & offshoots like Tin Machine. Someone I really respected, but kept at arm's length. So I fixed that and listened to his entire catalog. I was immediately hooked. Not just on Bowie's legendary shape-shifting music, but on the whole idea of listening to entire catalogs. So I did it again, and again, and again. I'm still doing it. At last count, I've gone through well over 50 artist discographies. Truth be told it's probably more like 150-1000 if you count all the short-lived bands. I call this a “chronolography”. It's a mashup of “chronology” and “discography”, and here's how I do it. I start from the artist's earliest extant recording, and proceed chronologically from album to album - including any non-album singles. I also include solo records from any prominent band member. I read up on each album as I listen - my version of liner notes - including any career or personal info that might somehow connect to the music. And I don't stop until I reach the last recording. This can be as few as one or two albums - like with the seminal punk band the Germs, or as many as 50 or more, like if you do the Beatles and then every Beatles' solo career. There are so many reasons why this is a worthy undertaking. Greater appreciation for the artist's talent beyond their more popular output. Better understanding of where the artist is coming from and what they're trying to achieve. Discovery of hidden gems and creative offshoots they may not be known for. A detailed illustration of how the artist developed through the years. Placing the artist's work in context - both as a part of their own career and as a response to the broader music scene. Oh and it's fun and immersive and most of the music is incredibly good. Plus it takes a lot less time than bingeing a TV show, and you can do it anywhere. Now here's where it gets way better. A chronolography tells a story. Not just of that music or that career, but of the times they existed, the people involved both in and out of the band, music development as a whole, how the industry and other external pressures influenced the music (or definitively DIDN'T), and even a chunky slice of society and humanity in general. It's like history meets documentary mixed with a novel and culminating in a time lapsed work of art. It's so much more important than just a musical exercise. We all have preconceived notions of pretty much everyone and everything we've ever encountered. The judgments that shape those notions are largely based on the least amount of information possible. We might know a few songs or one era when the band was hugely popular. When commerce coincided with creativity in a big way. We decide if the band was good or worth liking just from that. And hey that's fine if that's all you want to do, because it's just music, right? No. Not right. Why? Because for most people, how you approach one thing that matters is very similar to how you approach everything else. If you are content to settle for your own under-informed judgment on something as relatively simple as music, how likely is it you'd dig deeper when it comes to more complex subjects like politics or social or philosophical issues? Or the sum total of a person's life? ... --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

When Kara Jones’ daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, she sat curled up in the fetal position the entire night, cried and prayed. They had no money to pay for treatment, limited knowledge of what might work, and had no choice but to put their faith in God. Over the 2.5 years, they spent 138 days living at Seattle Children’s Hospital as Hunter Rose went through five rounds of intensive chemo, 12 rounds of radiation, and six rounds of immunotherapy. And while there are still challenges ahead, Hunter Rose has been a ray of hope and is still shining brightly. Prior to moving to Seattle, Kara’s husband Jay worked on several TV shows including Hoarders, Ice Road Truckers, and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and even proposed to Kara on the Tyra Banks Show. Days before their daughters diagnosis, they were working together to create The Experience: a new show that, in their words, was “a cross between Intervention and Survivor.” The show focused on helping people revive, rebuild, connect, and heal - little did they know they would need those same things in the days to follow the final recording. Even on my most positive and excited moments I run about 20% of his baseline of energy.E: One thing I have learned over my years in sales is people who are great at nonprofits are really good to associate with. You will learn really applicable things to do for your business. Realistically sales is fundraising. Give or take a really little bit, we are all asking for money. I would buy basically anything from Patrick. That made this book worth a read. J: Tell me some of the takeaways from the bookE: One of the biggest takeaways is planning. Disgusting planning and routine. As a pretty high energy person myself, I have been saying for the past couple of years now, focus the laser. The book says Mondays are for planning, Tuesdays are for doing, Wednesdays are for documenting, Thursdays are for celebrating, Fridays are for appreciatingThis isn’t 100% of what I have implemented into my week, but I have taken some nuggets and applied them to my week. J: I think it is good to silo your activity around energy levels. I try not to have sales meetings on Friday’s as i’m pretty low energy. Another book I read called Fanatical Prospecting talks about protecting the golden hours. Basically don’t do email or social media during the time that you should be talking to leads.E: For my rule I kept Monday’s are for planning. I don’t schedule anything Monday morning anymore. That gives me a chance to come in look at my week, and prep. My Tuesdays and Wednesdays are for doing. Coffee, lunch, networking events, etc. Thursdays and Fridays are for marketing. I implement gratitude, celebrations, into that. I write actual thank you cards and online reviews of area businesses I like. Friday before I leave. I review and document my week then give myself a grade. J: What was your grade this week? E: I have gotten C’s both weeks this year, mostly due to not going to the gym, and not getting these episodes recorded.Organized action, planning, gratitude, celebrations, and tracking are at the stem of the best nonprofits I know, and at the same time the stem of all the best sales people I know. J: It’s really easy to get busy being busy and not doing something that is most important. By being intentional with your week you have a better shot of getting through all the must do’s for the week. E: One last little tip from the book I wanted to share was the quote, “You can’t ask anyone for a donation before you know the name of their dog.” This is true for asking for business too. J:I think in our world we need to know what is important to the partners we are talking to. Some favor price, some just need to make sure they are heard, and others just want a final product and to tell them when you are done. Not a one sized solution thats for sure. So what was your big overall takeaway on the book from you?E: Salespeople should implement practices used by great nonprofits. If someone is great in that world, they are doing it will less time and money than regular business. Learn from them. J: Thank you for listening to this episode. If you know a startup that could use our random advice and thoughts have them subscribe and leave a review on iTunes.

All you need to do is run on over to Awesomers.com/89 to find out some of today's show notes and details and maybe even a transcript. Sometimes we flow transcripts in for you to make them easy to search. So today is a different kind of episode. We call it story time with Steve. Now what this means is I'm going to tell you kind of a story and experience and then try to give you a couple takeaways or maybe action steps that you can think about as it relates to your own business, your own life, from this story. So this is a story that I'm going to tell you and these stories are not in any particular order. It's just kind of what strikes my fancy at the time and in particular, today I need to record an episode so that we can keep the the publishing train running. As you may know, we've already published 88 episodes. That's a lot and we've done that in 88 days which is destroying my life, frankly. It's a lot of time and definitely is something that although I enjoy it while I'm doing it, the things that are pushing to the side are definitely starting to add up. So my point is, it's story time, I'm going to just kind of take you through an experience that I had tell you why I thought it was important and then of course you'll be able to investigate yourself whether or not you find that to be interesting. So first of all, this story is back in probably about the 2009 range. I had helped a Chinese company buy some assets of a bankrupt company and they were moving those assets from an old lease to a new lease. So just in terms of context, they had to get out of the old lease in a relatively fast order and when you do that

And later I asked, “What does NLP means?” And she points out it means a neural linguistic processing or something like that I don't want to say it wrong but she clued me in and gets me educated. So not only does she work on that in NLP and few sales copy, she helps on the business mindset shifting strategies. When she's not cranking out high converting copy or implementing business growth strategies, you'll find her walking on the ocean with her husband and four kids running the community PTSA, supporting philanthropic events - as if I've never heard of that word - and guiding her School District and the Washington State Legislature on education policy as an elected Orcas Island School Board director. So this episode, we dive in with Diana. We just talked about a little bit of her origin story and I would get right to the heart of what makes you know her business and what makes her tick as well.
