Harry & Natalie. Natalie Cilurzo brings the 2023 Pliny the Younger from Russian River Brewing Co. to Brew Ha Ha with Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras today. This is the 19th presentation of the new Pliny the Younger. This version is a little bit different than the one that premiered in February. The Pliny the Younger base recipe is fairly stable, at about 10.25% ABV, but there is a tweak to the hops and this year that is a new hop from New Zealand called Nectaron. Vinny decided to put a little more bittering hops into the second mix. The hop aroma is brilliant and beautiful and the flavors really shine through. The New Release Schedule In February they did a limited release. The first Friday in February used to be the launch date. Last year they had to postpone distribution due to a Covid outbreak, and what they found out was that their accounts appreciated the rollout this way, so they will continue to release for wholesale, draft only, in February and then in person, on draft and in bottles, for their brewpubs only, in late March. Natalie describes about a four-month process they have to manage for the release event. There is merchandise galore to design and order, the label, packaging, timing and logistics for all that, wristbands, et cetera. There are 28,000 unique wristbands, marked with date and location, with four pull tabs. The first three tabs are redeemable for one 10-ounce pour. The fourth, or B tab, allows the bearer to purchase two bottles to go. A lot of people enjoy the social event, including meeting people in line. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their Windsor location. Click the logo to visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. There are usually 20 beers on tap at Russian River Brewing Co. in addition to Pliny the Younger. They are releasing Hopfather IPA and a sour peach beer, tomorrow. Visit our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Herlinda and Natalie were at the California Craft Brewers Association conference this week. On the last day, the final talk had Natalie, Vinny and Ken Grossman on stage talking about the beer business and then they served a taste of Pliny for everyone, which was a big hit. There is a cheese tasting too, for people waiting in line. The California Artisan Cheese Festival is at the Fairgrounds, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Cowgirl Creamery, Cypress Grove and others will be there.

Moonlight Brewing co-owners Brian Hunt and Patrick Rue join Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. Brian is the founder of Moonlight Brewing and Patrick Rue is now a co-owner. Patrick is the former owner of “Bruery” in Orange County which he sold. After opening a Moonlight Czech Pils Reality Czech, we hear their stories. Patrick started brewing in 1992 and just kept at it. He started in a barn near the airport then to Graton 10 years later then to Coffey Lane and has been there since then. It's walking distance for lucky residents of Santa Rosa. Lagunitas bought 50% of Moonlight, then Heineken bought Lagunitas. Now Moonlight is back local with Patrick Rue. Brian gets to tell the story of looking for just the right partner for a long time. Patrick has been a fan of Moonlight since drinking Death and Taxes in college. He admires that they have a steady identity and do not have to chase trends. Patrick opened a Brewery in Southern California and he ditched law school to operate it then sold it to some investors. He tried his hand at wine, his winery is called Erosion. They also brew beer and they make ice cream too. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Patrick and Brian served together in the California Craft Brewers Association which is how they got to know each other. Brian had a great reputation that inspired Patrick. For a lot of people, including Harry and Patrick, Death and Taxes was popular when they were students. The Importance of Death and Taxes Death and Taxes is Moonlight Brewing's signature brew. Brian was working for a brewery in Napa and he thought of a beer that he wanted which didn't exist. Today we are used to a lot of choices but back then, he had to make it. It's something that works well in hot weather. It is the epitome of the San Francisco style black lager. He made up that term, because his friends in Europe are used to naming beer styles after cities. Even if that's not a habit in America, it makes sense to him. It is designed for when it's 90 degress outside. “To me a hop is an accent, it's not a reason to exist…” Get tickets for the Freshtival 2022 on eventbrite dot com. The Freshtival is back on June 25, 2022, at Sonoma Mountain Village. Come for 160 different beers from over 80 breweries from Portland to San Diego. All of the beer poured in this event will be less than 7 days old. For details visit Hen house brewing dot com slash freshtival Patrick explains how he likes to try to bring unusual flavors into beer, which is unlike what Moonlight does. He likes to use ingredients, yeast strains and spices that don't usually appear in beer. They have plans to let some Moonlight beer mature in oak barrels for 6 to 12 months. Reality Czech is a style from Pilsen, in western Czechia. They also have Dim Lights, a gently smoked lager. It took some trial and error to get the perfect smoked malts. Patrick's brand Erosion wine takes some Muscat Canelli (a cool climate aromatic wine) and flavors it with hops, three different ways.

Jim Woods, founder of Woods Brewing Company is our guest today. Michelle Marques is sitting in for Steve Jaxon, with Herlinda Heras and Mark Carpenter. They will talk about Woods Beer & Wine Co. and also about SF Beer Week. Jim is a friend of Mark's daughter, they went to school together in San Diego. Years ago, Jim asked Mark about making beer with Yerba Mate and Mark admits he didn't think it would have success. Woods Brewing makes several kinds of unusual beers which do not follow the traditional beer ingredients. Using processes and ingredients like grapefruit zest and bourbon barrel aging, brings people in to tasting craft beer. "We try to take a unique approach to everything we do," says Jim Woods. Jim talks about making a mess at home when he first tried to make beer at home, while he was a high-school student. His mom covered for him and helped him clean up, but his dad discovered it. He was upset at first, but Jim just asked him to taste it, which he did, and then he let him continue. From home brewing to commercial production. Jim believes that home brewing is the life-blood of the craft brewing movement. His first commercial idea was to make a Yerba Mate beer. Eventually they opened a production brewery on Treasure Island, which is open on Saturdays. They have five locations as Woods Beer & Wine. Jim Woods is also on the board of the California Craft Brewers Association. They add the Yerba Mate to the mash, in the brewing process. A new law in California allows for more co-mingling of beer, wine and distilling, where they can have production and storage in the same location now. With real estate at a premium, it's good to be able to concentrate product lines in a single location. They make wines with "natural winemaking" organic principles. When their wine is 80-90% done, they combine beer and wine in the production of Divine Origins ales. The wine has wild yeast, which is not one of the two types of yeast usually in beer. But some Belgian brewers embraced the wild yeasts, including a lot of the lambic breweries. Michelle says it is complex, with little sour notes, and very refreshing. Mark Carpenter tells about how Anchor wanted recognition for beers other than Steam Beer, so their first variety was a Porter. They did a few German styles but not many Belgians. Next they taste another "eno-beer" wine-beer hybrid from the Divine Origins line. But that's not the most unusual beverage they make; there is also a line of beer flavors inspired by Girl Scout Cookies, that they make once a year. SF Beer Week Feb. 7-16, 2020 SF Beer week is coming soon, February 7-16. Visit S F BEER WEEK DOT ORG for more. There are also concurrent events in Sonoma County and Woods Wine & Beer Co. is participating, also at their locations. People travel from all over the country to taste the amazing variety of beer available in the Bay Area. Mark Carpenter says, this golden age of brewing. American brewers used to travel the world to learn brewing, now the rest of the world comes to us.

A similar report shared by the BA in 2012, reported $33.9 billion in economic output. The release of the new analysis comes about a week before the BA’s largest consumer-facing event of the year, the annual Great American Beer Festival in Denver.According to the BA, the craft brewing industry was responsible for creating more than 559,545 total jobs last year, with 150,055 jobs directly at breweries. The craft brewing industry also contributed more than $5 billion in direct wages and benefits to its workers. The BA also broke down the economic impact in each state and released a list of the five states with the greatest economic impact. California — where 1,000 independent breweries are in operation as of August 2019, according to the California Craft Brewers Association — once again led the way with an output of $9 billion. Pennsylvania ($6.3 billion), Texas ($5.1 billion), New York ($4.1 billion) and Florida ($3.6 billion) rounded out the top five.A-B’s Natural Light Hard Seltzer and Big 12 Conference Announce PartnershipAnheuser-Busch and the Big 12 Conference announced a partnership this week to make Natural Light Seltzer the “Official Hard Seltzer of the Big 12 Conference.”The sponsorship will include elements during games, online and social media, as well as advertising during the conference’s baseball, football, and men’s and women’s basketball championships, according to Forbes. The partnership is solely with the athletic conference, not the 10 universities within the league, the outlet noted.Ricardo Marques, vice president of core and value brands at Anheuser-Busch, told Forbes that the sponsorships would help increase Natural Light Hard Seltzer’s market share due to hard seltzer being “still in its early days as awareness.”The deal is the latest is an ongoing trend of hard seltzer brands partnering with sports leagues and teams, including Boston Beer’s Truly Hard Seltzer being named the “official hard seltzer” of the National Hockey League earlier this week.Anheuser-Busch InBev Acquires Markstein Beverage Co. in San MarcosCalifornia’s beer distribution system is being shaken up once again.Anheuser-Busch InBev announced Friday evening the planned acquisition of “key assets” from Markstein Beverage Co. in San Marcos, California. The company will add those assets to its existing wholly owned distributor, Anheuser-Busch Sales of San Diego. The move comes about 15 months after Markstein, under threat of termination, was forced to sell the distribution rights to the Constellation Brands portfolio of Mexican import brands, including Corona Extra, Modelo Especial, and Pacifico, among others, in northern San Diego County to the Reyes Beverage Group.Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close upon closing requirements being met.Beyond A-B products, Markstein’s portfolio in San Marcos includes craft brands such as Sierra Nevada, Hangar 24, Speakeasy and Drake’s Brewing, as well as offerings from Craft Brew Alliance, including Kona Brewing, Redhook, Widmer Brothers and Square Mile Cider. The future of those brands’ distribution appears unclear.White Claw Maker Investing $250 Million to Increase Production and Meet DemandStarbucks, Apple, Tesla … and White Claw? Anthony von Mandl, the founder of White Claw parent company Mark Anthony Brands, told thousands of beer wholesalers Tuesday during the National Beer Wholesalers Association’s Annual Convention that his company is a disruptor in the vein of those iconic brands.According to von Mandl, White Claw’s disruption is “growing beer and unlocking substantial incremental profits and sales growth” for its beer wholesalers and retailers. He expressed confidence that White Claw will be “an enduring brand” that will be “connected to consumers for decades to come” with “the potential to deliver billions of dollars of profit” to its partners.“We are building an iconic global brand just as Starbucks did,” he proclaimed.Despite a flood of new entrants into the hard seltzer category — von Mandl said there are more than 70 hard seltzer brands on the market now — White Claw has maintained 60% of the market share, and combined with Boston Beer Company’s Truly Hard Seltzer, commands about 75% of the market. To meet consumer demand for White Claw, Mark Anthony Brands is investing $250 million to build a pair of production facilities on both coasts, as well as doubling its capacity at the Cold Spring contract brewery in Minnesota. In New Jersey, the company plans to build a brownfield production brewery from the ground up that is capable of producing 50 million cases of White Claw annually. That facility is expected to be operational by April 2020.Meanwhile, the company is still in the process of site selection for a potential West Coast brewery. Those three facilities, along with the company’s co-packer in Tennessee, will give it as much as 200 million cases of capacity in 2020, and 250 million cases in 2021.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com** Check out Upcoming Craft Beer Weekends ** Hampton, NHThe Victoria Inn Bed & Breakfast and PavilionCraft Beer Weekend - Dates: October 25-27, 2019Friday - Food / Beer Pairing at Inn / Q&A Brewer's PanelSaturday - Beer Bus takes you to local Breweries/DinnerSunday - Kegs N Eggs and BeerMosasAvailability: Limited - Book NOW!https://www.eventbrite.com/e/craft-beer-storm-weekend-tickets-74469531373If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Support ACS In NYC Marathon“32K In 64 days” - I signed up for the NYC Marathon through the American Cancer Society and I am aiming to raise $32,000 ($3,200 Minimum X 10X) - please follow link below to donate what you can - $25, $50, $30K! - Onward... - Here is link –http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=94035&pg=personal&px=49477898&fbclid=IwAR2mBEvhF1wMA_BbHPhkavichNSFrE9Y9gi2RVZzfQ_4Da5Sht7gvH9rY_k*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? While I was still under the weather, Esthela and Brandon had the chance to interview several integral members of California Craft Brewers Association at their annual Spring Conference. If you're not aware, The California Craft Brewers Association is a 501(c)6 non-profit trade association representing the craft and specialty brewing industry in California. Formed in 1989, the CCBA is the oldest state trade association representing craft breweries. The CCBA is committed to protecting the growth, quality and variety of California's craft brewing industry. The primary function of the CCBA is to monitor legislative activity at the state Capitol and provide a single and coherent political voice representing the interests of all of California's craft breweries. They also provide a lot of resources and services to the members of the association. They start off with Leia Bailey, the Managing Director of the CCBA and Laurie Navas, the Marketing & Events Manager. They discuss the origin of the association, what their roles are, and some of the important work the organization does on a daily basis. In the middle segment Brandon and Esthela are joined by Chris Cramer: Co-founder/Co-owner of Karl Strauss Brewing and the current Chair of the CCBA. They discuss the importance of protecting the craft beer/indie beer friendly regulations that we currently have in California and how the association fortifies the strength of the craft industry here in CA.In the final segment they are joined by Tom McCormick, the Executive Director of the CCBA. Tom mentions several bills they are addressing currently, specifically A.B. 1713, and A.B. 205; you can follow those links to get updates and more information. There is a link to a video below about another bill they are opposed to, if you'd like to help, contact your representative to voice your opposition for A.B. 860.https://www.facebook.com/CACraftBrewers/videos/351973215523053/Want to get a good feel for the CCBA and the events they offer? Attend the CA Craft Beer Summit in Long Beach, happening Sept 12th and 13th. Want to have a blast at a tremendous beer festival, join us at Summit Beer Festival on September 15th!As Chris Cramer said, grab a California craft beer and hit the play button! Host Ben Rice sits down in the middle of a massive beer conference to talk to whoever sits down! In Part One of Three of his adventures at the Craft Beer Summit. At 5:25, Ben sits down with Kevin Rhodes of Groundswell Brewing in San Diego and Ty Stevenson of Carneros Brewing in Sonoma. With a combined 25.25 years of commercial brewing experience (Rhodes 25, Stevenson 0.25), they delve into the importance of water in our beers. Then, at 15:20, Elliot Hoffman of Camino Brewing in San Jose sits across from beer blogger Eric Gibson of Brew Hoppin' to delve into being a small-timer at a massive statewide beer conference and Camino's plans to move from contract brewing to full-time, self-focused brewing, expansion, and canning. After that, at 31:30, we have a Barley & Me first! No brewers! We'll chat with Joshua Cody of Colorado Malting Company and Daniel Hicks of TTB Tamer. Joshua's job seems self-explanatory, but he's one of the few who grows, harvests, germinates, kilns, AND distributes his own malted grains, while Daniel is the creator of TTB Tamer, a computer program that makes it easier for brewers to keep tabs on what taxes may be owed each day, week, month, and year, depending on their brewing and sales quantities. And then, at 48:25, our final interview of this portion contains beer heavyweights "Big Mike" Moore (beer judge, world traveler, food pairing expert, and friend of brewers everywhere) and Rob Fullmer, Executive Director of the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild. They'll get into their job duties before delving delicately into the positives, negatives, wishes, hopes, and fears of the growing trend of craft beer buy-outs, in particular that of Bosteels, makers of the popular Tripel Karmeliet. It's a lot to digest, so clear your calendar and dig in. Visit our guests online!
