Such issues addressed were legislative updates, the growing rise of low ABV beer, food pairings and an opening address from Rob Todd from Allagash Brewing Company in Maine. There was also a trade floor that consisted of vendors such as brewing equipment, beer label makers, Hop Farmers and more. The awards ceremony is March 13 during the CCBA Summit. The Competition will be held in the Crest Theater. They will have 197 breweries and 1300 beer entries, which makes it the third largest one of these in the country. Judy Ashworth, the famous publican, was with Herlinda at the competition last year. Judy is a very famous figure in the craft brewing industry and she was on Brew Ha Ha on this episode back on December 19, 2019, along with former co-host Mark Carpenter. Five years into cold IPA, the arguments still aren't settled, but one thing is certain—strategic brewers have embraced the style for the unique counterpoint it can provide to more ester-driven IPAs, and the focus on light body has struck a chord with beer drinkers who increasingly want strong hop notes in ever-paler beers. We thought it was time to revisit the subject with three brewers who are no stranger to the podcast, and who each have contributed to the evolution of the style in their own way. Sam Tierney of the Firestone Walker (https://www.firestonebeer.com) Propagator in Venice, California has helped develop some pioneering cold IPAs for the California brewery, like core brand Hopnosis. Jason Spaulding, cofounder of Brewery Vivant (https://breweryvivant.com) and Broad Leaf Brewery, (https://broadleafbeer.com) has been around the block. He cofounded his first brewery, New Holland, in the mid-90's, and after exiting that brewery and spending time away from the brewing industry, launched Brewery Vivant with his wife Kris about twelve years ago. Operating a brewery with a niche focus comes with benefits as well as challenges, but Vivant has always focused on beer, food, and hospitality with a particular bit of Wallonian-like flair. Their take on Belgian-style beers is a bit more earthy and a touch more subdued than the American norm, but their audience has followed along. There's a temptation in every business to chase growth, no matter the cost, and Brewery Vivant followed the same book that everyone followed through the early 2010's. They put beer into grocery stores through distributors, and when distributors told them which beers to make more of, or make less of, they had no choice but to listen. Rather than dilute the Brewery Vivant brand with styles that didn't feel germane, they launched a second brewpub out in the ‘burbs (Broad Leaf) dedicated to progressive styles like hazy IPA and fruited kettle sours. Then, through COVID, the bottom all but dropped out. They made it through, but the broader conditions were an existence-level threat. Now, the Spauldings are rethinking why, and how, they make beer. The larger 60bbl tanks that required three turns on their 20bbl brewhouse, have gone and are being replaced by a pair of 20bbl tanks. Rather than feeding the distribution beast, they're refocusing on making the beer their customers want in the quantity they want it, and packaging any extra that isn't earmarked for their own locations. It's been a tough to scale back the earlier aspirations, but the health of the business requires it, and the ability to be dynamic and creative at this smaller scale is creating a new excitement. Due to holiday season travel schedules, there is no new Brew Ha Ha show today, so here is a repeat of a favorite show from last August featuring Ramon Tamayo, brewer at Russian River Brewing Co, and Mike Gilmore, Paris-based micro-brew shop owner.  Brew Ha Ha today welcomes Ramon Tamayo and Mike Gilmore. Ramon Tamayo is the brewer at Russian River Brewing, working for Vinny Cilurzo. He used to work for Mark Carpenter at Anchor Brewing. Mike Gilmore is a brewer in Paris, France. He runs Brew Unique Paris, a shop in Paris where customers come for home brew classes and learn to make beer.  He grew up in the American northeast but has lived in Paris for 20 years. Mike says that there are some good new breweries in and around Paris. He has friends who organize guided tours to Belgian and French breweries. He worked for Boulder Brewery in Boulder, Colorado, starting in 1991. Two professors from CU Boulder started it in 1979. Mark Carpenter remembers that Boulder had a hazy beer, back then, called “The Ugly Beer” that they used to serve as a joke in a paper bag. Herlinda just judged at California Craft Beer Summit competition. She judged hazy beers, and double and triple IPAs. Some hazy beers were really good and some really bad, nothing in the middle. Mark tells about when Ramon worked for him at Anchor in San Francisco. Ramon started in the bottling house and worked his way up into the brew house. Anchor has a classic copper brew house from a German brewery. It is all operated by hand. Some people were surprised that they had no computers in the brew process. Mike teaches people how to brew at his shop in Paris, by making 5 gallon batches. His customers do everything by hand. The Beverage People, the home brew shop that has equipment and classes for home brew, wine, cheese and cider, is a new sponsor of Brew Ha Ha. Their work is similar to Mike Gilmore’s work in Paris, catering to home brewers. Some clients are individuals, they also have groups such as corporate team building and weddings. It’s a four-hour course. They also give you a recipe from HenHouse to attempt. Mike says that there are a lot of nanobreweries in Paris and some are making the transition successfully from that to a larger scale functioning business. There aren’t too many in Paris but in the suburbs there are a lot.

Take it from me: Journalism, as a career, is a difficult one to hold in 2019’s socio, political, and economic climate. For some though, like today’s guest, LA-area writer and editor Sarah Bennett, it’s way more than a job. It’s how to support her community and the underrepresented voices within it. It’s a way to elevate those who really keep Los Angeles great. Sarah was formerly a beer and arts contributor to LA Weekly, the premiere Southern California alt weekly publication. But that was before the magazine was purchased by a shadowy, allegedly politically-motivated group of investors who wound up firing most of the weekly’s in-house staff. Since then, the new LA Weekly has invoked the ire of many in the independent journalism world. Quickly, a group of expat writers and editors regrouped, and created their own new home in a quarterly magazine called The LAnd, where Sarah serves as managing editor. But it’s hardly her only hustle. Sarah also works as editor at the Long Beach Post, a city publication chronicling the happenings of the large but relatively insular Long Beach community. Here, Bennett studies local restaurants, and, very importantly, beer, among a few other things. Months ago, Sarah asked me to appear at the California Craft Beer Summit to discuss beer and journalism with other beer writers and gathered brewers. A few hours before the panel was due to begin, I asked her to give me her thoughts on all things community, city life, beer, and journalism. What she said echoed part of The LAnd’s mission statement: “Angelenos deserve vigorous reporting and thoughtful writing.” This is Sarah Bennett, beer and food writer and editor. Listen in.

Mike teaches people how to brew at his shop in Paris, by making 5 gallon batches. His customers do everything by hand. The Beverage People, the home brew shop that has equipment and classes for home brew, wine, cheese and cider, is a new sponsor of Brew Ha Ha. Their work is similar to Mike Gilmore’s work in Paris, catering to home brewers. Some clients are individuals, they also have groups such as corporate team building and weddings. It’s a four-hour course. They also give you a recipe from HenHouse to attempt. Host Ben Rice sits down in the middle of a massive beer conference to talk to whoever sits down! In Part One of Three of his adventures at the Craft Beer Summit. At 5:25, Ben sits down with Kevin Rhodes of Groundswell Brewing in San Diego and Ty Stevenson of Carneros Brewing in Sonoma. With a combined 25.25 years of commercial brewing experience (Rhodes 25, Stevenson 0.25), they delve into the importance of water in our beers. Then, at 15:20, Elliot Hoffman of Camino Brewing in San Jose sits across from beer blogger Eric Gibson of Brew Hoppin' to delve into being a small-timer at a massive statewide beer conference and Camino's plans to move from contract brewing to full-time, self-focused brewing, expansion, and canning. After that, at 31:30, we have a Barley & Me first! No brewers! We'll chat with Joshua Cody of Colorado Malting Company and Daniel Hicks of TTB Tamer. Joshua's job seems self-explanatory, but he's one of the few who grows, harvests, germinates, kilns, AND distributes his own malted grains, while Daniel is the creator of TTB Tamer, a computer program that makes it easier for brewers to keep tabs on what taxes may be owed each day, week, month, and year, depending on their brewing and sales quantities. Season 3, Episode 38 – This week, we’re on the floor of the expo at the California Craft Beer Summit in Sacramento, California, talking to some rad beer industry peeps. This week’s post was written in collaboration with the lovely Yvonne England.  Hey y’all! Guess that we did?! We went to Sacramento! (Have you watched our road trip video yet?) Make Beer Clear Again… This week, we went to the California Craft Beer Summit and had the opportunity to talk to a bunch of amazing beer people on the floor of the event. There were so many great breweries and beer peeps in attendance. We couldn’t talk to them all, but we know you’ll love the folks we did get! First on the list was Miss Franny FullPint, of The Full Pint. She’s also the Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Brewers Guild (Get. It. Girl!). She’s badass. Just know that. Then we dropped acid…knowledge with Jeffers Richardson, of Firestone Walker Barrelworks, and learned what the hell Titratable Acidity is. Yeah, that’s a thing, and Jeffers explains it. We then interviewed Brandon Hernández, Chief Marketing Officer at Societe Brewing Company and Editor at Large of West Coaster Magazine, not to be confused with West Coasters Magazine, the best roller coaster review you’ll ever read! Patrick Rue of The Bruery and Henry Nguyen of Monkish Brewing Company Next you hear us with Patrick Rue, from The Bruery. Our SoCal duders will know this fine gentleman from his tiny little start-up in the OC. Just kidding! It’s one of the fastest growing breweries around…AND our own Matt Becker used to brew there!  Natalie Cilurzo, President of Russian River Brewing Company, also graced us with an interview. It was so dope! She was dope! Get ready for dopeness! (b-t dubs, the Russian River sour pilsner that was on tap at the festival was DOPE. SO. MUCH. DOPENESS.) Finally, we interviewed the wonderfully brilliant and knowledgable Julia Herz, of the Brewers Association. Julia knows her shit when it comes to the brewing industry, and also knows a thing or two about pairing beer with food. She even wrote a book about it! Beer Geeks! We had a blast at the California Craft Beer Summit. Like, for real. The expo was great and the fest on Saturday was well run with many spectacular California breweries pouring their brews. It was also really cool being literally down the street from the California State Capitol, drinking California craft brews! It was a fun road trip, followed by fun times with awesome beer people. Season 3, Episode 37 – This week, we’re heading up to the California Craft Beer Summit and making a few stops along the way. The 2016 California Craft Beer Summit is upon us! But, before get into the nitty gritty of the event, we’re driving up to Sacramento and making some stops along the way to pick up some beers from California breweries that we normally wouldn’t have access to. Erin Peters from The Beer Goddess also joins us in our makeshift hotel room studio in beautiful downtown Sacramento, California. Beers from California California is the largest state in the United States of America, and is home to approximately 600 breweries. According to the Brewers Association, approximately 95% of beer brewed in California in 2015 was sold in California. That’s a lot of beer, and the Brewers Association says there’s still room for more breweries. That’s pretty exciting. The beers on the show this week cover a pretty large swath of California. We made stops in Bakersfield at Lengthwise Brewing Company, Fresno at Tioga-Sequoia Craft Brewery, and Turlock at Dust Bowl Brewery. While these breweries are all geographically in California, the beers they brew are unique to their respective markets, making for a deliciously diverse group of beers for this week’s show. Host Ben Rice returns for the grand opening of Crooked Lane Brewing in Auburn, CA, to catch up with his episode 3 guests, founders Paul Schilling, Kirt Braun, Adrian Psuty, and Teresa Psuty, along with Nu Boonkham of Auburn Thai Garden. When we first spoke with this crew, the building had recently been determined and they were, hopefully, a year away from opening. We sipped on some of their soon-to-be mainstays, made on a small garage kit, and talked of hopes and dreams. And now we're back to discuss the overwhelming reality of that vision, three years in the making. We discuss the trials and tribulations faced in the last year, gathering a local following, forming a work unit, the feeling of selling out a beer on opening night, plus women in the brewing industry (featuring a special guest appearance by bar manager Sierra Smith) and what the future holds after this strong open.
