Episode 268: The Guys enjoy some @hillfarmstead and a collab with @vitaminseabrew and @jwakefieldbeer     LPT from Reddit:   When hired for a new job, copy the list of responsibilities they provide you and save it in a folder with your resume. This will make it easier to complete an application the next time you look for a job when the employer asks what your last job duties were. Don’t be afraid to splurge a little bit on a few luxury items from the grocery store that may dissuade you from eating out, and act as a reward for saving money and (probably) eating healthier. (The cost of a meal purchased at the grocery store is on average far cheaper than a similar meal via fast food, takeout, or (especially) delivery. If you can afford it, splurging a little bit on a good steak, or specialty produce at the grocery store may prevent you from eating out as often, so you’ll save money and experience higher quality food compared with a similarly priced meal from a restaurant.)     Beer news:   Anheuser-Busch Wins the Regulatory Go-Ahead to Acquire Craft Brew Alliance The Department of Justice gave its approval on Friday, Sept. 18 for Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE:BUD) to move ahead with its acquisition of Craft Brew Alliance (NASDAQ:BREW) -- or what Craft Brew calls an "expanded partnership." The deal been in limbo since February, when an antitrust examination began, but has now cleared a major hurdle on the way to closing. The approval is contingent on the two parties' agreement to sell the Hawaiian operations of Kona Brewing to PV Brewing Partners, LLC. Craft Brew Alliance and Anheuser-Busch suggested the divestiture back on June 10 as a way to "expedite the regulatory review process and alleviate potential regulatory concerns." Anheuser-Busch InBev and Craft Brew Alliance will grant PV Brewing Partners a perpetual license to brew and market Kona beer in Hawaii, along with selling it a new brewery with a capacity of 100,000 barrels and other Kona facilities in the state. Anheuser-Busch has owned a 31% stake in Craft Brew since 2016, but the deal will give it 100% ownership, paying $16.50 per share to Craft Brew's shareholders at closing. CBA's shares ended Friday trading up 6% on the news. Anheuser-Busch's Brewers Collective president Marcelo Michaelis said the beverage giant expects the combination "to help fuel the growth of the craft beer category" in the "competitive and dynamic" American beer market.

Many times I would stop into his office to ask something work related and several minutes later I would leave after a great conversation. Chris has a heart and gift for sharing and defending the Christian faith or Apologetics. Apologetics is defined as "reasoned arguments or writings in justification of something, typically a theory or religious doctrine." 1 Peter 3:15 "but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect," Defense in Greek is the word ἀπολογία (apologia) and that is where the word Apologetics comes from. Defend your faith with gentleness and respect!! No apologies needed for that!!We pray that our conversation helps to give you joy in this journey of life! Welcome to the 24th episode of the Nordic Surfers Magazine Conversations Podcast. This episode features none other than Keith Malloy. Keith has been a shaper of surfing culture for quite some time now, through his work with Patagonia as an ambassador and film-maker, but also through his seminal work ‘Come Hell or High Water’. We caught up with Keith in Hawaii following the conclusion of the Pipeline Bodysurfing Competition and discussed the event at Pipeline, his career trajectory as a professional surfer, regenerative agriculture, and what he has in store for his next ‘torpedo people’ film. It’s a beauty of a podcast and it wouldn’t be possible without the support of Kona Brewing. Enjoy! Craft Brew News 10/4/19(courtesy of BrewBound www.brewbound.com)Brewers Association: US Craft Brewing Industry Contributes $79 Billion to US EconomySmall and independent U.S craft brewers generated $79.1 billion in economic impact in 2018, which represented roughly 0.4 percent of the gross domestic product, according to industry trade group the Brewers Association’s (BA) 2018 Economic Impact Report. The Boulder, Colorado-headquartered not-for-profit added that the $79.1 billion amounted to a 4% increase over 2017’s $76.1 billion in output. A similar report shared by the BA in 2012, reported $33.9 billion in economic output. The release of the new analysis comes about a week before the BA’s largest consumer-facing event of the year, the annual Great American Beer Festival in Denver.According to the BA, the craft brewing industry was responsible for creating more than 559,545 total jobs last year, with 150,055 jobs directly at breweries. The craft brewing industry also contributed more than $5 billion in direct wages and benefits to its workers. The BA also broke down the economic impact in each state and released a list of the five states with the greatest economic impact. California — where 1,000 independent breweries are in operation as of August 2019, according to the California Craft Brewers Association — once again led the way with an output of $9 billion. Pennsylvania ($6.3 billion), Texas ($5.1 billion), New York ($4.1 billion) and Florida ($3.6 billion) rounded out the top five.A-B’s Natural Light Hard Seltzer and Big 12 Conference Announce PartnershipAnheuser-Busch and the Big 12 Conference announced a partnership this week to make Natural Light Seltzer the “Official Hard Seltzer of the Big 12 Conference.”The sponsorship will include elements during games, online and social media, as well as advertising during the conference’s baseball, football, and men’s and women’s basketball championships, according to Forbes. The partnership is solely with the athletic conference, not the 10 universities within the league, the outlet noted.Ricardo Marques, vice president of core and value brands at Anheuser-Busch, told Forbes that the sponsorships would help increase Natural Light Hard Seltzer’s market share due to hard seltzer being “still in its early days as awareness.”The deal is the latest is an ongoing trend of hard seltzer brands partnering with sports leagues and teams, including Boston Beer’s Truly Hard Seltzer being named the “official hard seltzer” of the National Hockey League earlier this week.Anheuser-Busch InBev Acquires Markstein Beverage Co. in San MarcosCalifornia’s beer distribution system is being shaken up once again.Anheuser-Busch InBev announced Friday evening the planned acquisition of “key assets” from Markstein Beverage Co. in San Marcos, California. The company will add those assets to its existing wholly owned distributor, Anheuser-Busch Sales of San Diego. The move comes about 15 months after Markstein, under threat of termination, was forced to sell the distribution rights to the Constellation Brands portfolio of Mexican import brands, including Corona Extra, Modelo Especial, and Pacifico, among others, in northern San Diego County to the Reyes Beverage Group.Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close upon closing requirements being met.Beyond A-B products, Markstein’s portfolio in San Marcos includes craft brands such as Sierra Nevada, Hangar 24, Speakeasy and Drake’s Brewing, as well as offerings from Craft Brew Alliance, including Kona Brewing, Redhook, Widmer Brothers and Square Mile Cider. The future of those brands’ distribution appears unclear.White Claw Maker Investing $250 Million to Increase Production and Meet DemandStarbucks, Apple, Tesla … and White Claw? Anthony von Mandl, the founder of White Claw parent company Mark Anthony Brands, told thousands of beer wholesalers Tuesday during the National Beer Wholesalers Association’s Annual Convention that his company is a disruptor in the vein of those iconic brands.According to von Mandl, White Claw’s disruption is “growing beer and unlocking substantial incremental profits and sales growth” for its beer wholesalers and retailers. He expressed confidence that White Claw will be “an enduring brand” that will be “connected to consumers for decades to come” with “the potential to deliver billions of dollars of profit” to its partners.“We are building an iconic global brand just as Starbucks did,” he proclaimed.Despite a flood of new entrants into the hard seltzer category — von Mandl said there are more than 70 hard seltzer brands on the market now — White Claw has maintained 60% of the market share, and combined with Boston Beer Company’s Truly Hard Seltzer, commands about 75% of the market. To meet consumer demand for White Claw, Mark Anthony Brands is investing $250 million to build a pair of production facilities on both coasts, as well as doubling its capacity at the Cold Spring contract brewery in Minnesota. In New Jersey, the company plans to build a brownfield production brewery from the ground up that is capable of producing 50 million cases of White Claw annually. That facility is expected to be operational by April 2020.Meanwhile, the company is still in the process of site selection for a potential West Coast brewery. Those three facilities, along with the company’s co-packer in Tennessee, will give it as much as 200 million cases of capacity in 2020, and 250 million cases in 2021.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com** Check out Upcoming Craft Beer Weekends ** Hampton, NHThe Victoria Inn Bed & Breakfast and PavilionCraft Beer Weekend - Dates: October 25-27, 2019Friday - Food / Beer Pairing at Inn / Q&A Brewer's PanelSaturday - Beer Bus takes you to local Breweries/DinnerSunday - Kegs N Eggs and BeerMosasAvailability: Limited - Book NOW!https://www.eventbrite.com/e/craft-beer-storm-weekend-tickets-74469531373If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Support ACS In NYC Marathon“32K In 64 days” - I signed up for the NYC Marathon through the American Cancer Society and I am aiming to raise $32,000 ($3,200 Minimum X 10X) - please follow link below to donate what you can - $25, $50, $30K! - Onward... - Here is link –http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=94035&pg=personal&px=49477898&fbclid=IwAR2mBEvhF1wMA_BbHPhkavichNSFrE9Y9gi2RVZzfQ_4Da5Sht7gvH9rY_k*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? Craft Brew News 09/06/19(Courtesy of Brewbound.com) https://www.brewbound.com/Night Shift to Open $10 Million Brewery in Philadelphia, Expand Production in Everett, MAEverett, Massachusetts-based Night Shift Brewing announced plans Wednesday to open a $10 million, 130,000 sq. ft. production brewery in Philadelphia.Speaking to Brewbound, Night Shift co-founder Michael Oxton said the company is “committed” to opening the new brewery before the end of 2020.The Philadelphia project is being financed through a combination of cash flow and bank debt, he added.Night Shift’s three founders — Oxton, Rob Burns and Michael O’Mara — collectively own about 80% of the business, with friends and family holding the remaining stake in the company.Oxton said “Since our beginning, we haven’t taken on any more investors and we have no plans to do so,”. “Our runway is fiercely independent for 100-plus years, and we have no plans of raising outside capital and letting another firm sort of dictate our decisions.”Earlier this month, the Philadelphia Board of Zoning Adjustment approved Night Shift’s permit to operate a taproom inside a former Anheuser-Busch wholesaler warehouse, according to the Boston Globe, which first reported the story Wednesday. In Philadelphia, Night Shift will lease the building, which is already equipped with refrigeration space, loading docks and a potential taproom location. The company plans to install a 100-barrel brewhouse in the space, which will immediately unlock 30,000 barrels of initial capacity. Over time, Night Shift could scale production at the facility to 200,000 barrels of capacity, although Oxton stressed that Night Shift remains committed to a philosophy of letting demand dictate growth. In addition to opening the Philadelphia brewery, Night Shift is upgrading its Everett headquarters, replacing its 20-barrel brewhouse with a 60-barrel system. The new brewhouse is expected to be operational next month. All of that demand has Night Shift on pace for 50% volume growth by the end of 2019. Oxton projects the company will produce more than 40,000 barrels, up from around 30,000 barrels in 2018.Craft Brew Alliance Exploring All Options in the Wake of No Offer from A-BCraft Brew Alliance CEO Andy Thomas had a rare off-cycle conference call with investors and analysts today after his company’s largest playmate, Anheuser-Busch InBev, declined its long-held option to purchase the Portland, Oregon-headquartered craft beer maker. The call came two weeks after the August 23 deadline for A-B, which already owns 31.3% of CBA, to make an offer of $24.50 per share (about $328 million) to purchase the remainder of the company or pay a one-time fee of $20 million. A-B opted for the latter, leaving questions about the world’s largest beer manufacturer’s future interest in the smaller beer company known for brands such as Kona Brewing, Widmer Brothers, Redhook and others.Since that time, CBA’s stock (BREW) has declined from $12.96 on August 22, the day before the deadline, to $9.28 at the end of trading today. It has sparked speculation that CBA might look to sell to another suitor or divest its brands, including fast-growing Kona. Another narrative emerged saying CBA and/or Kona were too entangled with A-B to ever be unlinked.Thomas stressed that CBA’s management team is being “exhaustive” in making sure all options are considered before choosing the correct path forward. The company’s leadership team has begun working with independent board members, bankers and external advisors to explore alternatives, “strategic and otherwise,” and the conversations with A-B have continued as CBA tries to understand what a future relationship looks like, he said. “We wouldn’t be in the discussions that we’re in right now if we thought status quo is an acceptable outcome,” he added. “It is not.”The biggest CBA block is that Kona brand, which is pushing 500,000 barrels and growing “high-single to low-double-digits,” Thomas said.Boston Beer Company is Taking Truly Hard Seltzer on Tap to Bars and RestaurantsTruly Hard Seltzer-maker Boston Beer Company announced today the nationwide launch of “Truly on Tap,” a new product that the company is calling ”one of the first hard seltzers available on draft” across the country.Boston Beer CEO Dave Burwick told Brewbound, via email, that Truly on Tap is the Pure offering renamed. He noted that Truly on Tap shares many of the attributes of a vodka soda: “effervescent, clear, finished with a squeeze of fresh fruit” but with a lower ABV.According to the sales sheet, Boston Beer appears to be positioning Truly on Tap as an alternative to light beer and spirits, attempting to capture happy hour and game-day occasions during the upcoming football season.Citing off-premise sales data from market research firm IRI, the sales sheet notes that hard seltzer sales year-to-date have surpassed those of IPAs — the most popular craft beer style — through July 7.Additionally, the company calls out a Radius study, which found that two-thirds of drinkers said they would substitute drinking a beer at a bar with hard seltzer if it were available. If that wasn’t a sobering stat for alcohol producers, Boston Beer cited a Harris Poll that the company commissioned last October that found 70% of 21- to 31-year-old consumers said they’d choose hard seltzer over other alcoholic beverages at bars and restaurants.Truly, along with White Claw, already make up 85 percent the off-premise sales of hard seltzer offerings, according to market research firm Nielsen. The firm also projects the hard seltzer industry to generate $1 billion by the end of 2019.Dogfish Head Nears National Distribution; Adds 45th State, MississippiDogfish Head Craft Brewery is just five states away from completing national distribution. The Milton, Delaware-based craft brewery, which merged with Boston Beer Company earlier this year, announced Monday the addition of its 45th state — Mississippi — via Capital City Beverages.Sales of Dogfish Head products, such as 60 Minute IPA, Slightly Mighty IPA, SeaQuench Ale and 90 Minute IPA, as well as seasonal offerings, will begin in the state starting in early September.Last year, Dogfish Head ranked as the 13th largest domestic craft brewery, with production of 275,000 barrels of beer, according to national trade group the Brewers Association. The company is on pace to grow to around 300,000 barrels by the end of this year, with net sales of $120 million. The $300 million merger of Dogfish Head and Boston Beer — which makes the Samuel Adams, Truly Hard Seltzer, Twisted Tea and Angry Orchard cider brands — was completed in July.Following the transaction, Boston Beer founder Jim Koch said the two brands would work to align into a single wholesaler network.Koch told Brewbound in July, “We think monogamy works a lot better in wholesaler relationships than polygamy,” Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com** Check out Upcoming Craft Beer Weekends ** Hampton, NHThe Victoria Inn Bed & Breakfast and PavilionCraft Beer Weekend - Dates: October 25-27, 2019Friday - Food / Beer Pairing at Inn / Q&A Brewer's PanelSaturday - Beer Bus takes you to local Breweries/DinnerSunday - Kegs N Eggs and BeerMosasAvailability: Limited - Book NOW!http://www.thevictoriainn.com/6th-annual-craft-beer-storm-weekend-2019/If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Support ACS In NYC Marathon“32K In 64 days” - I signed up for the NYC Marathon through the American Cancer Society and I am aiming to raise $32,000 ($3,200 Minimum X 10X) - please follow link below to donate what you can - $25, $50, $30K! This episode features a couple of legendary Norwegian surfers/entrepreneurs who launched the Arctic Coworking Lodge last year up in Lofoten, providing a place for digital nomads to surf and work at the top of the world! In this episode of the podcast Rolf Oftedal and Stian Morel, the cofounders of the Arctic Coworking Lodge, sit down for a cup of tea with podcast host Josh and talk about the Lofoten Islands surfing scene, their entrepreneurial journey, and touch on some of the environmental challenges facing the region. It’s far-reaching and super informative for anyone wishing to head north for some Arctic cold water stoke! This episode is also brought to you by Kona Brewing and their Big Wave Golden Ale. As many of you know, winter is usually the time when swells are more consistent in the Nordics and journeys must be had when the winds blow strong enough. When it all comes together, it can be the stuff of legend. It’s just the same in Hawaii, sort of… During the winter months, the Hawaiian Islands are legendary too, with the islands' north and west coasts seeing waves that often climb up to 40 feet. Now that summer seems to be going (or even gone) it's time to reminisce the days and nights enjoyed with friends and family while steeling ourselves for the opportunities that Fall and Winter will provide. Don’t despair the cold - the Baltics are finally starting to light up and local breaks are delivering the goodies. There’s always liquid aloha to keep the summer spirit alive with Big Wave Golden Ale. It’s available in your local beer shop. www.nordicsurfersmag.se www.instagram.com/nordicsurfersmag https://shop.nordicsurfersmag.se Photo - from our latest issue - by Hallvard Kolltveit

This episode the Brew Chatt crew is discussing Corona’s new strategy on minimizing packaging with their stack-able six pack cans. They’re also getting in to this story about Germans defeating some neo-nazi’s by buying up every drop of their town’s beer. Kona Brewing could potentially buy you a free six pack if you have purchased their beer in the past few years, via a new law suit. Then finally they’re giving their thoughts on Tennessee’s new “mobile device” usage laws, and what it may mean for Tennesseans down the road.

His name is carl. I spoke of him on the Charity Tourist Podcast, as he participated in the ride for tots the marine corp toys for tots program. So we met for lunch in Hawaii Kai at the Kona Brewing company. There we chatted. He is an experience and successful business owner and fan of the Ohio State buckeyes so we had a lot to talk about. I was seeking advise on business and input for moving forward. 1st We talked about my 4 Buckeyes comic strip and side project, told him about a few obstacles in finishing the book. He encouraged me to do a pre-order sale of my 4 Buckeyes Book “The Story of OHIO” reassuring me that its better to try and fail than having not tried at all. Well I plan on doing just that and i will alert you to it when i do.   2rd we discussed the show you are listening to now. Hawaii Posts. He made some suggestions about how to target my audience better and gave a few suggestions that would switch up a few things on the show. For instance he suggested that i focus on the events and put the weather and surf at the tail end.   Shoots I guess i will give it a try.   Now Carl is headed into open heart surgery this week and i ask that we keep Carl in our thoughts and prays as he recovers. Good Luck Carl…God Bless you with a successful surgery and speedy recovery.   Life is not a Rehearsal.  That’s on the Marque outside a theater pictured on The Verve’s Single by the same name. Life is not a Rehearsal. for real. I remind my son of that all the time to embrace life, prepare for tomorrow but live for today. Tell the people you love that you love them.    The Friday after lunch with carl i got a text from my friend David, i went to preschool - college with him and swam on the same team for years with his brother Frank and Doug. Well Davids father passed away. He was a accomplished obstetrician. Think of how many people he helped to bring into this world.  He was always pool side at swim meets. Sunday I got another text message from another friend Kenny. He informed me that his father had font be with the lord. His father was a Good kind hearted man who was active as a coach on soccer teams or an adult leader in the scouts. I Let Kenny know as i did with David that i was there for them if they wanted to call and talk. Being in Hawaii and them 3000 miles from here on the mainland i knew i couldn’t be there for either of them in there time of need.   Monday Morning I am driving a client to the airport when my friend Todd here on the islands sent a text that simply said “Steve Passed Away Man” I dropped off and replied No … Aw man Todd replied “yeah for real like wtf”   Steve Kanemori passed away. 47 years old. It was hard for me to process.  Steve is a local braddah who was larger than life, a friend, a business partner, God father to my Children and Uncle to many many kids.   I moved out here to by encouragement by a good friend, Josh who moved here after leaving Ohio State. He said to me on the phone, “if you wanna surf and make surf films this is the place to be.” referring to Hawaii. When i moved out here I had $400 cash a near maxed credit card, my bike camera equipment and a duffle bag. Thinking was going to market my brand “Trippin Everywear” by shooting movies with surfer skaters and mountain bikers wearing my brand.  Big Dreams small budget, I was broke in a week. I quickly got a videographer job at the wedding emporium where i met Steve and Todd. That was 21 years ago. During that time i lived in Kuliouou Valley with Josh and friends and coincidently that was the valley Steve grew up in so we hung out there and also in kaimuki as i eventually moved closer to work. But then I moved to the North Shore making surf films, Steve stayed in Waikiki and killed it in the wedding video business. He was the best. A mast shot, good with customers and totally dedicated to providing the best possible wedding video. He would shoot 2 maybe 4 in a day and edit most before the next day. In 2004 i moved to Waikiki and set up an office with Steve. He did weddings and Corporate video and i plugged away at sports and adventure videos. When Steve Jobs introduced the Video iPod in 2005 and asked for Video Podcasters. Steve and I came up with the name Hawaii Surf Session Report. He believed in all of my hare-brained ideas and knew how to rib me about my over zealous ambition. After about 7 years together making videos separately and together we eventually closed offices.   We stayed in touch and started meeting at the salt flats in Maunalua bay, its a parking lot for boats and trailers and cars and whatnot. We called it the docks…. there really were no docks…. but there is a boat ramp. Anyhow.    Almost 3 nights a week for the last 10 years we would meet at the docks with Todd, Trevor, Jay, Brian, Shawn M, Shawn P and family and friends and old friends and we welcomed new friends as they traveled through the islands.  W drank beer talk story laugh, rant, encourage, play clash and the kids like Jimmy and Crimson would run around chasing crabs on the beach, light saber wars or gamed the night away under the stars. Steve was alway there. At the dock or even at times of need Steve was there for you. He would be a good uncle to Crim and Jim and talk to them about acting up at home or school and say “boy you better get good grades “ Eventually my youngest Tommy, got to go to the docks. He would give uncle Steve a high five and a big hug when we left . He thought coming out to the docks and seeing tod and uncle Steve was really special.   Jimmy Really loved uncle Steve. First fist bump and local handshake always went to uncle Steve. Jimmy would sit in his lap and as he got bigger uncle Steve would joke that he’s gonna have to settle for the fist bump. But Jimmy always gave him a big hug before we parted ways. As we would drive down the Kalani Steve and Jimmy would exchange shakers through the car windows. It was a big thing. He was a big friend and meant so much to so many people. And now he is gone. That fast. here one day gone the next.   The last night i saw him we talked about this podcast and my book and the chauffeur job. He was going to be working with me as a chauffeur.  we were stoked to be working together again. Even though he still encouraged me to pursue my creative interest. I excitedly told him about an email i got from a website that does travel reviews and they listened to the show and contacted me offering content. I told him i started clearing out my storage unit and found all of my cd from the Surf Session report days, explaining i have rights to all of that music and now i can play that music on the Hawaii Posts. Started dreaming of bringing back Surf Session report for version 2020. Even remarked on how much i wish we could get an office space together…. like the old days.   He said “ I never really saw you happier than when you were in the office after coming back from shooting surf and still had to edit but your were happy and stoked you were following your dream and it was working, you gotta believe in yourself. You gotta focus on one thing. You can do it.” I remember saying “ Shoots brother Steve you always believe in me”   The night of his passing all of his friends gathered at the docks to celebrate his life. As tradition in Hawaii memorials are made with all sorts of flowers and candles. So we lit some candles opened a beer for Steve. The kids made a R.I.P Steve K with white coral on the sand lot. Todd changed it to R.I.L. as in rest in love, 11 days later the memorial still stand at the docks. His mother will spread his ashes there and We plan on placing a plaque and a coconut tree in honor of braddah Steve.   Years ago i made a 3 part series called Fieldtripp Hawaii and Steve was my partner and camera guy. In the episode you will catch a glimpse of Steve. Craft Brew News – 6/7/19(courtesy of Brewbound.com)NFL Allows Players to be Featured in Beer AdsThe National Football League will now allow its players to be featured in beer ads, according to Morning Consult, citing a league email. The news comes months after the NBA and MLB lifted restrictions on active players to be featured in beer ads. However, the NFL has put restrictions on its players’ participation, including:only active players can be featured in the ads;the ads cannot imply players are endorsing the products;if a company wants to feature more than one player in an advertisement, it must use a minimum of six players in the ad.players also must be featured in uniform in action shots using “licensed Associated Press” photos. The NFL also eased restrictions on wine and spirits companies, allowing them to become “official” sponsors of its franchises. Although wine and hard liquor companies will be allowed to use team logos on packaging, they will not be able to use players in their advertisements.Details of CBA’s Kona Lawsuit SettlementA month after Craft Brew Alliance agreed to settle a years-long class action lawsuit over alleged “false and deceptive advertising” of its Kona Brewing beer brand, the Portland, Oregon-based craft beer company has detailed the settlement agreement in a May 23 SEC filing. As part of the agreement, CBA will pay up to $10 to customers without receipts and as much as $20 to those with a proof of purchase. CBA has said it expects to incur costs of $4.7 million to settle the dispute.According to the original complaint, CBA “intentionally” misled consumers ito believing Kona products are made in Hawaii. Although CBA operates a production facility in Hawaii and produces thousands of barrels on the island, a majority of Kona beer sold in the continental U.S. is brewed at facilities in Portland, Oregon; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; and at an Anheuser-Busch brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado.Deschutes Brewery Launches New Brand Campaign(Check out Episode # 42 where we interview Deschutes BrewMaster Brian Faivre)Deschutes Brewery is attempting to position itself as “the beer of choice in the land of recreational cannabis,” the company said in a press release. The Bend, Oregon-headquartered craft brewery released a series of videos and advertisements earlier this week as part of its new “It Comes with the Territory” campaign.According to Deschutes vice president of marketing Neal Stewart, the company is “drawing attention to the healthy tension between craft beer and cannabis.”“People are going to enjoy recreational cannabis, but we want to remind them that this is still one of, if not the best place on Earth to enjoy a beer and Deschutes helped put the craft brewing industry on the map,” he said.No-Li and Goose Island Butt Heads Over ‘Born & Raised’ Name(Check out Episode # 25 where we interview Matt Jimenez, Head Brewer at Goose Island China in Shanghai )The Chicago Tribune chronicled attempts by No-Li Brewhouse founder John Bryant to resolve a dispute with Anheuser-Busch-owned Goose Island, which recently began using the name “Born + Raised” for a new, draft-only ale that is exclusively available in Chicago.Spokane, Washington-based No-Li has used the “Born & Raised” name for its flagship IPA for the last seven years. He claims No-Li has “first-use” rights to the name. However, his efforts to resolve the issue have been rebuffed by Goose Island leaders.“I don’t think we should have to give Anheuser-Busch a brand that’s established since 2012,” he told the Tribune. For his part, Goose Island president Toss Ahsmann said he’s confident the Chicago craft brewery can use the name since No-Li doesn’t own a federal trademark on the name.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. Craft Brew News - 5/3/2019Craft Brew Alliance Agrees to Settle Kona Labeling DisputeCraft Brew Alliance (CBA) has agreed to settle a years-long class action lawsuit over alleged “false and deceptive advertising” of its Kona Brewing beer brand. In an SEC filing, the publicly traded Portland, Oregon-based craft beer company – today said it expects to incur costs of about $4.7 million to settle the dispute, which surfaced in early 2017.That amount is inclusive of all legal and administrative fees but does not represent the total amount CBA will pay to the class, according to Marcus Reed, the company’s general counsel.According to Reed, the nationwide settlement will be open to consumers who purchased Kona-branded beer products dating as far back as 2013.The original complaint alleged that CBA, “intentionally misleads consumers into believing that Kona Brewing Company beer is a local beer made in Hawaii.”Although CBA maintains a production facility in Hawaii and produces thousands of barrels on the island, it produces a majority of the Kona beer sold in the continental U.S. at facilities in Portland, Oregon, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and at an Anheuser-Busch brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado.Speaking to Brewbound, Reed said the company agreed to a settlement after two years of litigation because it was becoming a “distraction” to the company’s day-to-day business.“It got to the point where it was time to reach a settlement,” he said.Canada’s Moosehead Breweries Enters Cannabis Sector in JV with SproutlyCanada’s oldest and largest independent brewery is getting into the cannabis business.Moosehead Breweries Limited and Sproutly Canada, which aims to become the leading supplier of water-soluble cannabis solutions, yesterday announced their intent to form an exclusive joint venture that will develop, produce and market cannabis-infused beverages. In the release, Moosehead CEO Andrew Oland said Sproutly’s proprietary “Infuz2O” process for delivering cannabis effects within five minutes drove the brewery’s interest in entering the cannabis market.Recreational use of cannabis was legalized in Canada last October, however, the sale of edibles and infused beverages are not currently permitted. Legalization of those products is expected to occur on October 17.Moosehead joins a growing list of beer manufacturers that have already invested in the cannabis space. Large beer companies such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (Tilray), Constellation Brands (Canopy Growth) and Molson Coors (Hexo) have each struck partnerships with other Canadian cannabis companies. Hamilton, Ontario-based Collective Arts Brewing has also established a sister company called Collective Project Limited to develop and sell cannabis-infused beverages.Cannabis is not federally legal in the U.S., however 10 states — Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and Washington, D.C. — have established laws permitting the sale and use of recreational cannabis within their borders. Several other states are currently working to decriminalize and legalize cannabis.Meeting of the Malts: Pennsylvania Craft Beer Production Tops in the NationFor the third consecutive year, Pennsylvania produced more craft beer than any other state in the nation, Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson shared during the Brewers of Pennsylvania’s annual Meeting of the Malts gathering in Hershey, Pennsylvania. (Check out Craft Beer Storm – Episode # 41 with Bart Watson!)In 2018, Pennsylvania’s 354 craft breweries combined to produce more than 3.7 million barrels of beer. And, according to Watson, the state ranked second in the number of brewery openings, trailing just California. Most of that growth, Watson said, is coming from the small breweries that sell directly to consumers.Direct-to-consumer sales at Pennsylvania breweries increased by 15,000 barrels last year, Watson said. He added that Pennsylvania brewers have room to grow as national taproom sales accounted for about 12.5 percent of beer sales.Looking at the national landscape, Watson said he believes there will be 10,000 breweries in operation in the U.S. within the next two years. In 2018, a record number 7,346 breweries operated for all or part of the year.As more breweries have opened, the median size of all beer companies has shrunk to 400 barrels, Watson said. He added that half of the breweries in the country produce 400 barrels or fewer. However, Watson said craft brewers have the opportunity to buck those trends and grow over the next decade as millennials “age into beer, rather than aging out of beer like previous generations.”Veteran New Belgium Communications Director to Depart on May 10Longtime New Belgium Brewing spokesman Bryan Simpson will depart the company on May 10, Brewbound has learned. (Founder is Kim Jordan)“It’s been an absolute honor to represent this brewery and everyone’s collective love and talent,” he said via a statement.Leah Pilcer-Pitman, who most recently served as New Belgium’s director of retail development and strategy, will supplant Simpson as director of communications.Simpson, who spent 21-years with the country’s fourth largest craft beer company, said he will launch his own boutique digital media agency this summer.“I’ll be moving on to pursue my long-deferred dream of creative film and media production, and I will always be a passionate and vocal fan of New Belgium Brewing and the entire craft brewing industry,” he said via the statement.Speaking to Brewbound, Simpson said his yet-to-be-named agency would focus on “content generation” and the creation of “digital and web assets.”Simpson, one of New Belgium’s longest-tenured employees, joined the company in July 1997. At the time, New Belgium produced about 80,000 barrels of beer, its offerings were distributed in just five Western states, and the entire craft brewing industry comprised fewer than 1,100 breweries that collectively produced 5 million barrels.Today, more than 7,300 breweries make nearly 26 million barrels of craft beer, according to industry trade group the Brewers Association. For its part, New Belgium, now the fourth-largest U.S. craft brewery according to industry trade group the Brewers Association, produced 846,000 barrels of beer in 2018, down from 955,000 barrels in 2017. The company distributes to 50 states.“I was literally hired on the bottling line, and then I worked in the tasting room for one-to-two years, but at that time everyone was doing a bit of everything,” he said.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel.
