Bud Light, once the nation's most popular beer, is now the No. 3 brand in the country — a stunning fall from grace for the Anheuser-Busch InBev-owned lager following the boycott over its Dylan Mulvaney ad partnership. Modelo Especial, the Mexican import sold by Constellation Brands, is now No. 1, accounting for 9.7% of beer dollar sales in US stores in the four weeks that ended July 6, according to NielsenIQ data that was analyzed by the Bump Williams consulting firm.

On their recent earnings call discussing Constellation Brands' fiscal year '24, leaders illustrated a story of financial stability, strategic innovation, and growth. CEO Bill Newlands kicked off the dialogue with stakeholders, detailing the company's plan for the Wine & Spirits division - "We did not consider divestments as part of our evaluation. We believe in the long-term potential of our portfolio, aiming to improve execution and performance." Based on performance metrics, the company seems on a stable and effective growth path. A major success story for fiscal '24 was the Beer Business's ability to gain market share, increase net sales, and elevate operating income. In the face of market challenges, the Wine & Spirits division displayed significant potential and resilience. A critical component of Constellation Brands' healthy fiscal score and market position is its successful Beer Business. Modelo Especial and Corona Extra's performance highlights the company's premiumization, innovation, and adaptiveness. Modelo Especial leading the U.S. market in dollar sales offers clear evidence of effective market strategy and execution. Constellation Brands has successfully adapted to key consumer trends, favoring premium, curious flavors, and health-conscious products. With products like Modelo Especial and Corona Non-Alcoholic in their lineup, the company continues to meet changing consumer tastes head-on. As we look forward, Constellation Brands plans to fuel its growth, particularly in its Beer Business, with expansion plans, new product launches, and pack size innovations. The Wine & Spirits division isn't far off, with a keen focus on enhancing performance and execution. As Newlands shared in their financial forecast during the earnings call, "We expect non-controlling interest to be around $35 million with approximately 183 million anticipated weighted average diluted shares outstanding for fiscal '25, factoring in share repurchase activity." An insight hinting at their strategic handle on capital allocation, an eye for suitable acquisitions, and shareholder returns. In summary, while Constellation Brands appears to have a well-devised strategy to meet the demands of a volatile market, continuous growth will require diligent attention towards retaining consumers, innovating, and strategic investments. The company's sustainability and profitability are tied to these pivotal factors. Despite their recent successes, substantial challenges lie ahead in maintaining growth amidst dynamic market changes. Modelo Especial continues to absolutely dominate as a lager, but is it so successful that we can call it the new domestic lager of choice? On this episode of The Gist, I'm joined as always by Lead Sightlines reporter Kate Bernot, along with special guest, freelance writer, and Good Beer Hunting contributor Jerard Fagerberg to talk about how Constellation Brands has grown Modelo to a 200 million case brand and what that means for the domestic beer category at large. Plus, we look at the latest c-store numbers—specifically, how cider is performing—and why combining “low” and “no” alcohol options into one group doesn't really make much sense. I'm Beth Demmon, and you're listening to The Gist.
In an effort to reclaim their former glory as the leading beer brand in the nation, Anheuser-Busch InBev has launched an extensive advertising initiative for Bud Light during the Super Bowl festivities of this year. Plagued by a consumer revolt, Bud Light's standing plummeted, causing a significant reshuffling in beer rankings. Their strategy appears to hinge on two Bud Light commercials, one being a minute-long, the other of half the duration, and a third advertisement pushing Michelob Ultra, in a bid to turnaround declining sales. As stated by Kyle Norrington, Anheuser-Busch's Chief Commercial Officer, the company aims to carefully select their star brands for wide-reaching moments like the Super Bowl. The hope is to capitalize on the immense visibility not only on television but also across various platforms that such a grand event, along with the NFL playoffs, provide. He emphasized that Bud Light and Michelob Ultra were the brands deemed to have the most significant opportunity this year. While the exact amount the company is investing into this advertising blitz remains undisclosed, it's reasonable to assume a sizable figure given the market rate for a 30-second slot hovering near seven million dollars. Therefore, it could cost upwards of $25 million to broadcast these three commercials. This year, Bud Light has strategically aligned itself with NFL followers, once a significant customer demographic, on the back foot to improve flagging sales figures. Consulting firm Bump Williams reports a sharp 28.9 percent drop in Bud Light sales compared to the previous year. This contrasts with the steady rise of Modelo Especial that experienced a 15.1 percent surge in the early weeks of 2024, leapfrogging Bud Light to snatch the top spot. Interestingly, outside of the United States, Modelo Especial is under the InBev brand umbrella, yet due to regulatory stipulations, it is distributed by Constellation Brands within the U.S. Bud Light's downward spiral seemingly began in early 2023 when a widespread consumer backlash ensued. The brand's marketing head, Alissa Heinerscheid, cast a negative light on her core customers by labeling them as 'out of touch'. The situation went from bad to worse following an unsuccessful and ill-timed marketing campaign featuring controversial figure Dylan Mulvaney, culminating in Bud Light losing its number one spot as America's preferred beer. This year, the Bud Light team aims to reconnect with its consumers through their minute-long Super Bowl ad, which promises to wield humor as a primary tool. The announcement has stirred much anticipation about a fresh, endearing character's debut, set within their existing 'Easy to Drink, Easy to Enjoy' marketing narrative. Arguably the more nostalgic of the two ads, the 30-second clip is set to spotlight the role of the beer's distributors in bringing Bud Light to its consumers. A surprise appearance by the iconic Clydesdale horses, a beloved Budweiser symbol, is expected to imbue the commercial with a sense of legacy and tradition. The flurry of ad campaigns during the Super Bowl aims to resurrect the previously thriving sales of Bud Light. However, only time will reveal whether these commercials will successfully reignite the brand's popularity and restore its status, or merely serve as an ambitious yet ultimately ineffective strategy to stop the sales decline. Bryan was on Brew Ha Ha last August on this episode, and his partner Tom Edwards was a guest on this other episode from March 31, 2022. The first beer tasted today is called Chismosa Clara, their take on a Mexican Lager. There is an amber ale version. This is a lighter one, made to be like Modelo Especial. They are located in Rohnert Park which is growing and gaining popularity. A hazy IPA is the next tasting, called Early Sunset. This is how they select which beers to produce more of. Old Caz is opening a new location in SOCO Village, right in the middle of the square. It is under construction now and their goal is to use the old taproom only for special events and to move the public tasting to the new place. Constellation Brands is enjoying a strong surge in the beer market, thanks to its Modelo Especial brand, which recently surpassed Anheuser-Busch's 'woke' Bud Light as America's favorite beer last year. While the company's latest quarterly results didn't meet sales projections due to waning interest in wine and spirits, the robust growth of its beer sector has sustained Constellation's confidence in their 2024 profitability prospects. Last year, Modelo Especial, one of Constellation Brands' core beer offerings, ousted Bud Light from the top pedestal, becoming the new favored brew among beer consumers across the United States. This switch was no small feat for Constellation Brands and a blow for Anheuser-Busch, who have long vaunted Bud Light as one of their crowning products. According to CEO Bill Newlands, the success of Modelo Especial isn't just a one-time surge. The brand saw remarkable double-digit sales growth, thereby reinforcing its position as the leading beer in the U.S. in terms of overall sales. But the good news for Constellation didn't end there. The company's other star beers - Corona Extra and Pacifico - also demonstrated impressive performance, forming a strong trio with Modelo Especial, and threatening to redefine the dynamic of the U.S. beer sector. These brands contributed significant gains to the U.S. beer market share, an achievement any true beer connoisseur can appreciate. Buy a Not Bud Light Koozie Much like its contemporaries, including Molson Coors and Brown-Forman, Constellation has responded to escalating production costs by implementing price increases. However, with these costs now receding from their heady peaks, Constellation managed to clock a commendable quarterly profit of $3.19 per share, surpassing the predicted $3 per share. For this quarter, Constellation's total revenue fell short, totaling $2.47 billion and missing the market consensus of $2.54 billion. This disappointment, however, was not mirrored in their beer unit, as brands such as Corona Premier and Modelo Especial posted a positive 4% increase in sales. Despite recent setbacks in the Wine and Spirits Business, which needed a downgrade in guidance due to market headwinds, Constellation remains hardy in its 2024 projections. CEO Newlands reiterated their confidence in their four-year vision, with a comfortable profit estimate ranging between $12 and $12.20 per share. With consumers increasingly showing an affinity for smaller pack sizes, Constellation's suite of beer brands, including Modelo and Corona, have capitalized on this trend. This preference for smaller packaging, coupled with the brands' overall appeal, has significantly boosted Constellation's popularity among beer enthusiasts. In an ironic twist of events, Bud Light's woke marketing strategy ended in Anheuser-Busch inadvertently transferring a notable chunk of its customer base to Constellation. Bud Light's ill-conceived promotion with Mulvaney and controversial comments from its ex-marketing vice president caused a stir, leading to a boycott that redirected customers towards Constellation's brands. Moved by this shift in the beer industry and startled by Bud Light's stumbles, many Americans have taken their loyalty to Constellation Brands. The company's intelligent approach to catering to the beer demographics is something to be respected, showing a clear understanding of their market and the needs of their consumers. This change cast a revealing light on the dynamics of the current beer market, where astute execution of consumer-targeted strategies can achieve results that a giant such as Anheuser-Busch could not. It's a stark reminder to industry leaders that understanding your audience and the shifting societal trends is pivotal. By putting their consumers first and maintaining a steadfast commitment to quality, Constellation Brands has seen the rise of their champions, Modelo Especial, Corona Extra, and Pacifico. And it seems this trend isn't likely to change any time soon, with potential for further growth and reshaping of the beer market dynamics. This story of the beer industry landscape is powerful encouragement for other businesses to stay true to their core values, and to avoid adopting 'woke' tactics for trivial short-term gains that could potentially alienate their existing customer base. Instead, focus on what truly satisfies consumers: high-quality, reliable products delivered faithfully. Despite the volatility and unpredictability of the global markets, Constellation's brands have shown a level of resilience that should be the envy of their peers. The trajectory they have maintained, driven by a solid strategic direction, offers a masterclass in the nuanced art of market dominance. On the whole, the triumphs of Constellation Brands could serve as a beacon for other businesses looking to survive and flourish in the current market landscape. By realizing that the key to success lies in understanding the core values and preferences of the target audience, they have redefined the rules of the game. The brewer of Modelo Especial, Constellation Brands, struck it lucky twice in the past 30 years: first in 1996, when Mexico's Grupo Modelo awarded them an evergreen contract to import Corona Extra into the US; then in 2013 after trustbusters at the US Department of Justice forced a settlement on AB-InBev during its takeover of Grupo Modelo, which turned Constellation into an independent, fully integrated, and economically viable beer industry competitor. In this podcast Ina Verstl and Ernst Faltermeier lift the fog of history and tell an exciting story.

In today's show, Trish Regan reports on the stunning new sales numbers out of Bud Light. Sales plunged nearly 25% in the latest report knocking Bud Light out of its number one spot. Modelo Especial, however, is gaining ground. With the company at risk, the question becomes - will there be a change in management? The same question is plaguing Target. The retailer is under fire for numerous reasons including escalating theft, inventory challenges, a challenging economy and, of course, a PR disaster. On this next episode I have a guest by the name of Frank Rojas his name on Instagram is frank_e_rojas4 give him a follow. We are podcasting at the top of Monserate Mountain trail. We met about 3 years ago on Instagram and then finally hiked together last year on September 11. Holy shit, he made me laugh then and made me laugh even more on this podcast. He caught my attention with some of his hiking photos. He gets up at 2 or 3 am and loves catching the sunrise and being above the clouds. Not only that, but he is just such a funny guy and never forgets to pack his Modelo Especial. Find out how he keeps those suckers so cold. It was hard for me not to laugh every minute. I had no idea what type of work he did and its pretty impressive and such an important job. He describes himself as a very reserved person. But, after a couple beers though, he loosens up a bit. Find out who his inner celebrity is and what his intro song would be @monica_crayolla. Find out how us little people look from way up there @monsterrrtattt. For those of you that know Frank, you know what I'm talking about. Frank definitely has a passion for the outdoors. Find out what ALV means @socal_hillibillies. Listen for shout outs at the end! I hope that one day you get to meet Frank and hike with him, well maybe….Anyways, crack those beers open and relax and enjoy this episode! "It's Modelo time". (I do not own the rights to this quote.) Summer is coming and it's time for some Mexican Lagers Mexican Lagers are so hot right now. The CEO of Constellation brands even goes as far as saying he believes Modelo is about to become America's favorite beer. The data kind of supports that claim, with Consellation's brands (including Modelo, Pacifico, and Corona) seeing 14% growth in the most recent quarter. Craft breweries are cranking out more Mexican Lagers as well. Most are simple drinkin' beers akin to a Pale Lager / Clara. But some are going deeper into the genre with Vienna Lagers and others. To make matters even more confusing, if you look at Modelo Especial on Untappd it calls itself an American Lager, then description says it's a Pilsner. This thing has quite the identity crisis going on. Either way, Brian enjoyed this one but I thought it was a bit too sweet, especially if they are claiming it's a Pilsner. Corona brought by memories of drinking in my younger days and I'd still crush several of these by the pool or on the beach if that's what's available. For some craft representation we sampled Tactical Brewing's collaboration with Cholo Dogs - El Campéon. This elote-inspired lager is brewed with smoked malt, flaked corn, tajin, and limes and was much more enjoyable than I expected. As the temps heat up many of these beers are perfect for cooling down. No matter if they are America's favorite or not they're nice to pack in the cooler. Correction:We mention in this episode that Modelo is poised to take the top spot in American beer sales Although this claim was made by Constellation's CEO, the data reflects sales for all Constellation brands and not just Modelo. We apologize for lying to you like that and we'll do better in the future. This week our story comes out of Mexico. It's an unbelievable story made for the headlines. A single mother who happens to be a professional Luchadora, or Mexican wrestler, who struck fear in the hearts of many of Mexico's abuelitas. We are covering none other than Juana Dayanara Barazza Samperio also known as La Mataviejitas or the little Old Lady Killer. For dinner, we had Mexican Sopes. While these are not your typical Americanized dishes such as tacos or burritos, sopes are just as flavorful and frankly way underappreciated. Cindy took care to knock us out with them. For dessert, she wowed us with a strawberry shortcake tres leches cake that left us weak in the knees. And what else would one wash it all down with, but the official beer of Mexico, Modelo Especial. Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com The one thing about a Super Weekend with the NFL is that we'll have some big arguments about snacks, teams, and beer! Instacart isn't focusing on the teams playing - but they have the beers and snacks people order the most for the Super Bowl. I wasn't surprised at all by many on the list - but the number one beer spot was Modelo Especial! That was definitely the underdog from my personal picks - but it's a beer I'd drink any day of the week! Get the list of top snacks, dips, and more at The Snacktime Report https://www.instacart.com/company/updates/the-snacktime-report-here-for-the-snacks/ Here's a way to say I Love you for Valentine's Day, Birthdays, or really any big day - make ahead freezer cocktails! I haven't done this before, but I can tell you I'm going to start now. Who wouldn't want to reach into the freezer and pull out a perfectly chilled and ready-to-drink Martini, Negroni, Old-Fashioned, or (perhaps appropriately for this weekend and Monday) a Flame of Love? Several recipes, and the proper storage, shared by experts are included that can save your day or make the day. Do it now while you're thinking about it - and surprise your significant other. I'm going to go do it with a Milk and Honey & Kahlua recipe my wife loves. The link is at https://punchdrink.com/articles/make-your-freezer-cocktail-work-harder-death-co/ And this guy might be my hero as I've wanted to do this for a long time, but responsibilities… anyway - Paul MyHill went through the state of Colorado to drink through 467 breweries, brewpubs, taproom, and more. How long did it take him? A decade? 5 years? No - it took him 18 months! It started out, as many of these things do, going out for a round with a friend. Before he knew it he had a challenge of 30 breweries in 30 days, 100 in 100 days, and.. well you get the picture! Not only did he hit all those places in the state, but tracked stops at 150 places outside of the state while on vacations during that time! RUN This week we talk about our training runs in the Florida heat. We also kick off our 30k Gauntlet Challenge from the Medal Chasers website. This is a series of 5k runs for each infinity stone in the “Tony Stark” version of the gantlet medal called the Nano Gantlet. This virtual race series also benefits the Pinky Swear Foundation that supports children and their families fighting childhood cancer, just like the 10k version we completed a few weeks ago. This week was a tough one because we had to combat the Florida heat and humidity as well a forecast full of storms we had to plan our running around, so it became a bit tricky to time it just right and get it done. But we did it! EAT This week, we highlight the return of a local taco food truck called Death By Taco 239. We are so happy to have it back on Mondays at Nice Guys, when the pizzeria is closed. We had the Saigon, Szechuan, and Rockefeller tacos. They came in an order of two tacos each on a corn tortilla. Our favorite? The Rockefeller. It has cornmeal-fried oyster mushrooms, pickled sweet corn, pickled mustard seed, preserved lemon aioli, shallot fennel slaw, and cilantro. So good!! if you want to hear more about this amazing truck, we featured them on Episode #106. We are so glad to see that they will be open again on a regular basis! Meet you anywhere they are, anytime! DRINK While eating the tacos, we got to sample a Mexican Lager that is new to us. Since the food truck was parked at Nice Guys Pizza at the time we ate, we were able to a beer that was on draft there called Pachanga from Sun King Brewery. We find similar flavor to other Mexican Lagers we’ve had in the past like No Nombre from Fort Myers Brewing Company or Modelo Especial. It is a lighter beer that is nice to have on a hot and humid Florida day after a run. THAT’S A WRAP! Special thank you to our newest insider and patron of the show, Rob Nadeau! Craft Brew News 10/4/19(courtesy of BrewBound www.brewbound.com)Brewers Association: US Craft Brewing Industry Contributes $79 Billion to US EconomySmall and independent U.S craft brewers generated $79.1 billion in economic impact in 2018, which represented roughly 0.4 percent of the gross domestic product, according to industry trade group the Brewers Association’s (BA) 2018 Economic Impact Report. The Boulder, Colorado-headquartered not-for-profit added that the $79.1 billion amounted to a 4% increase over 2017’s $76.1 billion in output. A similar report shared by the BA in 2012, reported $33.9 billion in economic output. The release of the new analysis comes about a week before the BA’s largest consumer-facing event of the year, the annual Great American Beer Festival in Denver.According to the BA, the craft brewing industry was responsible for creating more than 559,545 total jobs last year, with 150,055 jobs directly at breweries. The craft brewing industry also contributed more than $5 billion in direct wages and benefits to its workers. The BA also broke down the economic impact in each state and released a list of the five states with the greatest economic impact. California — where 1,000 independent breweries are in operation as of August 2019, according to the California Craft Brewers Association — once again led the way with an output of $9 billion. Pennsylvania ($6.3 billion), Texas ($5.1 billion), New York ($4.1 billion) and Florida ($3.6 billion) rounded out the top five.A-B’s Natural Light Hard Seltzer and Big 12 Conference Announce PartnershipAnheuser-Busch and the Big 12 Conference announced a partnership this week to make Natural Light Seltzer the “Official Hard Seltzer of the Big 12 Conference.”The sponsorship will include elements during games, online and social media, as well as advertising during the conference’s baseball, football, and men’s and women’s basketball championships, according to Forbes. The partnership is solely with the athletic conference, not the 10 universities within the league, the outlet noted.Ricardo Marques, vice president of core and value brands at Anheuser-Busch, told Forbes that the sponsorships would help increase Natural Light Hard Seltzer’s market share due to hard seltzer being “still in its early days as awareness.”The deal is the latest is an ongoing trend of hard seltzer brands partnering with sports leagues and teams, including Boston Beer’s Truly Hard Seltzer being named the “official hard seltzer” of the National Hockey League earlier this week.Anheuser-Busch InBev Acquires Markstein Beverage Co. in San MarcosCalifornia’s beer distribution system is being shaken up once again.Anheuser-Busch InBev announced Friday evening the planned acquisition of “key assets” from Markstein Beverage Co. in San Marcos, California. The company will add those assets to its existing wholly owned distributor, Anheuser-Busch Sales of San Diego. The move comes about 15 months after Markstein, under threat of termination, was forced to sell the distribution rights to the Constellation Brands portfolio of Mexican import brands, including Corona Extra, Modelo Especial, and Pacifico, among others, in northern San Diego County to the Reyes Beverage Group.Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close upon closing requirements being met.Beyond A-B products, Markstein’s portfolio in San Marcos includes craft brands such as Sierra Nevada, Hangar 24, Speakeasy and Drake’s Brewing, as well as offerings from Craft Brew Alliance, including Kona Brewing, Redhook, Widmer Brothers and Square Mile Cider. The future of those brands’ distribution appears unclear.White Claw Maker Investing $250 Million to Increase Production and Meet DemandStarbucks, Apple, Tesla … and White Claw? Anthony von Mandl, the founder of White Claw parent company Mark Anthony Brands, told thousands of beer wholesalers Tuesday during the National Beer Wholesalers Association’s Annual Convention that his company is a disruptor in the vein of those iconic brands.According to von Mandl, White Claw’s disruption is “growing beer and unlocking substantial incremental profits and sales growth” for its beer wholesalers and retailers. He expressed confidence that White Claw will be “an enduring brand” that will be “connected to consumers for decades to come” with “the potential to deliver billions of dollars of profit” to its partners.“We are building an iconic global brand just as Starbucks did,” he proclaimed.Despite a flood of new entrants into the hard seltzer category — von Mandl said there are more than 70 hard seltzer brands on the market now — White Claw has maintained 60% of the market share, and combined with Boston Beer Company’s Truly Hard Seltzer, commands about 75% of the market. To meet consumer demand for White Claw, Mark Anthony Brands is investing $250 million to build a pair of production facilities on both coasts, as well as doubling its capacity at the Cold Spring contract brewery in Minnesota. In New Jersey, the company plans to build a brownfield production brewery from the ground up that is capable of producing 50 million cases of White Claw annually. That facility is expected to be operational by April 2020.Meanwhile, the company is still in the process of site selection for a potential West Coast brewery. Those three facilities, along with the company’s co-packer in Tennessee, will give it as much as 200 million cases of capacity in 2020, and 250 million cases in 2021.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com** Check out Upcoming Craft Beer Weekends ** Hampton, NHThe Victoria Inn Bed & Breakfast and PavilionCraft Beer Weekend - Dates: October 25-27, 2019Friday - Food / Beer Pairing at Inn / Q&A Brewer's PanelSaturday - Beer Bus takes you to local Breweries/DinnerSunday - Kegs N Eggs and BeerMosasAvailability: Limited - Book NOW!https://www.eventbrite.com/e/craft-beer-storm-weekend-tickets-74469531373If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Support ACS In NYC Marathon“32K In 64 days” - I signed up for the NYC Marathon through the American Cancer Society and I am aiming to raise $32,000 ($3,200 Minimum X 10X) - please follow link below to donate what you can - $25, $50, $30K! - Onward... - Here is link –http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=94035&pg=personal&px=49477898&fbclid=IwAR2mBEvhF1wMA_BbHPhkavichNSFrE9Y9gi2RVZzfQ_4Da5Sht7gvH9rY_k*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? Craft Brew News – 04/06/19(courtesy of Brewbound.com)Constellation Brands Sales Top $8.1 Billion in Fiscal Year 2019Constellation Brands reported its fiscal year and second quarter 2019 earnings results today, which were highlighted by a 7 percent increase in net sales, to more than $8.1 billion.During the 2019 fiscal year, Corona brand family shipments reached 150 million cases, while depletions increased 7 percent. Meanwhile, Modelo brand family shipments exceeded 125 million cases, as depletions rose 12 percent.Newlands called Modelo Especial “the leading growth engine in entire U.S. beer market,” adding that it is the “fastest growing brand in the on-premise” and the No. 1 selling beer in 7-Eleven stores.“It is the fastest growing major beer in the industry, accounting for almost 40 percent of total category growth,” he said, adding that the beer is now the top selling brand in California. In 2020 fiscal year, Constellation Brands will make its “biggest marketing investment” behind Modelo, with television advertising during live sporting events as well as the roll out of 32 oz. single-serve bottles.Heineken USA to Pay Record $2.5 Million Fine to Settle Trade Practice ViolationsThe Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) today announced the acceptance of a record $2.5 million offer in compromise from Heineken USA Incorporated for alleged trade practice violations outlined in the Federal Alcohol Administration (FAA) Act.According to the TTB, HUSA supplied alcohol retailers with its proprietary “BrewLock” draft systems at no cost between August 1, 2015, and March 26, 2019.In a press release, the TTB said the BrewLock systems were designed to only dispense products packaged in unique kegs used by HUSA, which subsequently induced retailers into purchasing offerings made by the global brewing entity.Additionally, the TTB accused Heineken’s U.S. importing arm of making “slotting fee payments” to retailers, and disguising those transactions as “permissible activities” such as consumer sampling experiences that never actually occurred.Brewers Association: Craft Growth Outpacing Overall Beer MarketThe BA, which released its 2018 craft industry growth statistics today, reported that 7,346 craft breweries operated in the U.S. in 2018. That’s up from 6,490 in 2017.Those 7,346 craft breweries produced a combined 25.9 million barrels of beer in 2018, up about 800,000 barrels from 2017, the BA said.Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson told members of the media during a teleconference. “We’re still seeing openings outpace closings by almost five-to-one,” Watson added that he expects both numbers to be revised upward next year as additional data is collected. In 2018, craft’s share of total beer dollars grew to 24.1 percent — to an estimated $27.6 billion — which Watson attributed to price inflation and the so-called “long tail” of small brewers commanding higher retail margins. Craft’s volume share of the overall U.S. beer also increased, to 13.2 percent last year, up from 12.6 percent in 2017.Watson also made a case for the smallest breweries finding the most success as they build their businesses through direct-to-consumer taproom sales. The BA estimates that the number of barrels sold directly to consumers via brewery taprooms grew by about 400,000 barrels, to 3.1 million barrels, in 2018 (up from 2.71 million barrels in 2017).Ninkasi Brewing Sells Majority Stake, Establishes National Platform to Acquire Other BreweriesOregon’s Ninkasi Brewing has sold a majority stake to Legacy Breweries Inc., an upstart venture led by former Yakima Chief CEO Don Bryant, that aims to acquire U.S. craft breweries.Similar to Canarchy – which owns Oskar Blues, Cigar City Brewing, Deep Ellum, Utah Brewers Cooperative, Perrin Brewing and Three Weavers – or Artisanal Brewing Ventures – which owns Victory Brewing, Southern Tier and Sixpoint Brewery – Legacy Breweries Inc. hopes to establish “collaborative partnerships” with craft breweries, according Ninkasi co-founder Nikos Ridge.Speaking to Brewbound, Ridge said he, along and co-founder Jamie Floyd and the company’s six investors, would “retain significant ownership” in the brewery.“Ninkasi sold a majority stake to Legacy Breweries in order to create a new platform that can leverage our resources in conjunction with those of the Legacy team,” he said.As those “brewing hubs” are established, the company would also look to acquire 10 to 15 smaller breweries in those geographies. Those companies would be able to access expanded production and packaging capabilities and have better access to raw materials such as hops, malt, and cans. 00:00:00 - Science keeps chugging along, and the media keeps reporting it wrong. This week Patrick and Ryan go toe-to-toe in the friendliest of ways with recurring guest Brian Switek and newly minted guest Derek Mead in a discussion of how the science gets reported based on an article by Derek and a how-to guide by Double X Science. 00:32:27 - Having been told that reporters drinks, the Paleopals decide to do the same. Derek downs a Modelo Especial sin Lima, because apparently cirtrus in "chincy." Don't worry, Ryan asks what it means while he also drinks a Restraining Order cocktail. Patrick isn't sure if he's drinking a Magic Hat #9, and he also isn't sure if he likes it. 00:36:40 - Time travel may not yet be possible, but if it was don't expect a warranty especially if you're responding to the classfied ad which inspired this week's Trailer Trash Talk: Safety Not Guaranteed. 00:42:41 - The Paleopals et al. discuss the recent failures of mainstream science journalism that prompted the discussion part 1 of this very episode! Brian has been hard at work debunking the recently promoted nonsense concerning space dinosaurs, aquatic dinosaurs, and of course, flatulent dinosaurs. 01:15:36 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like bogus science reporting, they happen more often than your might expect. Patrick regales us all with tales from Betsy and her adventures taming a supposedly aquatic brachiolope, which you can judge for yourself in the Brachiolope Gallery. And Ryan has an e-mail from an Aussie in exile, Graeme N., concerning some of our fruit and marsupial based distinctions discussed in episode 131. Thanks for the clarifications, mate! And finally, we didn't have time to talk about them but helps the theme make sense: FOSSIL FLEAS FEEDING ON DINOSAURS Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts!
