Quinn Bartlett, formerly of Belgian focused Buzzsaw Brewing and now at Hoster's Brewing, joins us to talk about brewing Belgian-style beers. Along the way we try some new offerings from Ommegang and revisit an old classic from North Coast Brewing, while discussing the challenges of selling these beers in the American market.
For this episode of Brewstilled, I'll be recapping the Wildcard round for the 2023 NFL season playoffs. For the wildcard round, we saw upsets, emerging stars and 2 epic collapses. The Houston Texans showed they're the new dominant team in the AFC South and maybe even eventually the AFC Conference. The Packers showed they're also a dangerous team while the Dallas Cowboys suffered an epic collapse. For the Detroit Lions, they're also a dangerous team as Jared Goff won his revenge game against the Los Angeles Rams for an historic win for the Lions. Kansas City dominated the Dolphins who will now face the Buffalo Bills. Tampa Bay also dominated the Philadelphia Eagles as the Eagles faced a collapse of their own just like the Dallas Cowboys. It was wildcard round for the ages that may have repercussions for the offseason. I'll be recapping it along with more here on Brewstilled with a Saison from North Coast Brewing as the beer pairing.
Hendrick Verspecht Hendrick Verspecht from cuVer Brewing Co. is our guest on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and with Peter Lopez sitting in for Herlinda Heras today. Hendrick's first time on Brew Ha Ha was this episode of September 16, 2021, just before cuVer opened. He was also on BHH on May 5, 2022. Now they are preparing to celebrate their second anniversary, on October 7, 2023. They begin by tasting the award-winning cuVer signature Pepperwood Saison Ale. Peter is a busy entrepreneur who runs Juncture Taproom and is a partner in Santa Rosa Pizzeria. Today he has brought some sandwiches from Santa Rosa Pizzeria. They are all named after something iconic in Santa Rosa. This panino is called Taylor Mountain. Another is Pierre's French Dip. cuVer is pronounced “koo-VAy.” Cuver is the root of the past participle cuvée, which means Ferment. When the Cushing family and the Verspecht family formed the partnership, they took the first letters of their two names and made cuVer. Hendrick tells that the French expresson “cuver son vin” literally means to ferment one's wine, but idiomatically it means to sleep off a hangover. The Pepperwood Saison Ale was the first recipe that Hendrick ever made. It is a Belgian farmhouse ale flavored with California Bay Laurel and Meyer lemon peel. Those are ingredients are not available in Belgium so this is a real California Belgian version. cuVer Second Anniversary: October 7 cuVer will be celebrating their second anniversary on October 7, 2023. Peter Lopez' restaurant was one of their first customers. The anniversary celebration will feature a food truck, Lila's Streetside Eats, and will go from 12 noon to 8 pm on October 7. They will also have a darts and cornhole tournament. They have a darts league every Tuesday night. The party will feature a competition where you can play to win cuVer merch. They are located in Windsor at 7704 Bell Road. They are down the street from Barley and Bine. They are closed Monday and Wednesday. The other days, Tuesday and Thursday open from 5-8pm, Friday and Saturday 12 noon to 8pm and Sunday from 1-6pm. The next beer they taste is a Belgian quadruple, which is even stronger then the Belgian Tripel. Hendrick tells the story of how his father wanted Belgian beers after they moved to California, and he started home brewing, for themselves as much as for others. Hendrick also gives credit to Anderson Valley Brewing and North Coast Brewing and Russian River Brewing Co., who also make Belgian styles.

Harry Duke, Matt Carpenter and Herlinda Heras have two guests today on Brew Ha Ha, Natalie Cilurzo from Russian River Brewing Co. and Martin Voigt, the leading beer blogger from Austria are both here today. First, we welcome a new sponsor to Brew Ha Ha. Visit Santa Rosa is sponsoring Brew Ha Ha this month with the Santa Rosa Beer Passport initiative. There is a list of participating breweries at their website Visit Santa Rosa dot com. The Santa Rosa Beer Passport is your guide to explore the world-class craft beer scene in Santa Rosa. Natalie Cilurzo from Russian River Brewing Co. joins us in the studio today because normally, today they would be gearing up for their 18th annual Pliny the Younger release. However they have decided to postpone that this year, because of the surge in Omicron cases. The new release dates are March 25 to April 7. Despite the fact that they were conceived to run simultaneously, the Pliny the Younger postponement will not affect the 2022 Santa Rosa Beer Passport program, which will continue as scheduled in the month of FeBREWary. Martin Voigt is visiting again from Austria. He went to northern California to visit some breweries, including North Coast Brewing and Anderson Valley Brewing and there are others still to visit. Martin Voigt began writing about beer when he wrote about being a German who moved to Austria and got to know the beer there. People were interested in his writing, then a friend introduced him to video blogging, which he decided to do. It's the only video blog in Austria about beer. Martin brought a Vienna lager, considered to be the first modern lager, first brewed in 1841. He says that Austria always had small local breweries that served their local communities. It is lightly hopped and has a dry clean finish. Next they open a Russian River Row Two Hill 56 which is hopped with Simcoe hops, which tends to have citrus, pine and resiny flavors. The name is an address where the hops came from. These hops give the beer a fabulous aroma. Then they taste a beer called Falco, from the only brewery in the Vienna city limits. Brew Ha Ha is sponsored by the Santa Rosa branch of Yoga Six located in Coddingtown Center.
This week, Jason and Stephen decide to fulfill a listener's request to complete beer-related BuzzFeed quizzes on the podcast. The release of this episode represents our triumphant return to Thursday night podcasting after more than a one month hiatus. For a variety of reasons, one of them predictable (Thanksgiving), one of them planned well in advance (medical procedure), and one of them an unfortunate reality in our world today (Keith had Covid), we had an extended break during the most wonderful beverage time of the year. Fortunately everyone is now healthy and so far the only lingering effects seem to be centered on Keith's olfactory system. While we wait for his sense of smell to continue its slow journey back to normal we will be relying on Andrew's sensory perceptions even more than we usually do for the foreseeable future. During a recent trip to our neighborhood Tap and Bottle, Keith found a different variation of an old favorite imperial stout and that is what we will be sharing with you this week. For this show we will be trying the Old Rasputin Barrel Aged Russian Imperial stout. They have two versions, one aged in bourbon barrels and one aged in rye whiskey barrels and the latter is the one that we will be trying. Prior to 2010 these were made in limited quantities that were only available locally in California. Fortunately for us they have increased production which allows for a broader yet still limited distribution. What did we think? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch. If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@gmail.com.
Strong ales can pack a punch, but what are they? Why do strong ales change depending where you got your feet? This week, we look at strong ales while sampling North Coast Brewing's Old Stock Ale. Add syrup, bitters, and bourbon. Stir well to combine. Add to rocks glass filled with ice. Express lemon peel over drink and drop ‘er in. Be sure to check out Driftless Drinks on YouTube!
In the final episode while Dad is in Italy, Jords joins Josh to sip on some Belgian strong ale style beers. They first opened the Brother Thelonious from North Coast Brewing and secondly Chimney Grande Reserve from Belgium. They share a single pairing plate this week. It has beef meatballs with garlic mashed potatoes, goat cheese, coastal English cheddar, prosciutto, sopressata, and coffee macarons. They have a great time chatting about a beer they both love and one which they both try for the first time.
Poetry: "When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities" by Chen Chen Beer: Old Stock Ale by North Coast Brewing Company Girl Crush: Robin Wall Kimmerer (author of Braiding Sweetgrass) In Episode 44, Erica gives us the rundown on aging beers, and then she tries the 5-year-aged Old Stock Ale by North Coast Brewing. FINALLY!! Michael and Anthony the same beer this week as they review the Brother Thelonious Abbey Ale from North Coast Brewing. After reviewing the Ale, the study of 1 Peter continues on in Chapter 2. Listen and Enjoy!
The Chronicles of Riddick is the big budget sequel to 2000's more reasonably priced and plotted Pitch Black. Both feature Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel), a wanted ex-con and master of navigating the dark. He's an anti-hero—a man who has done bad things, but who we root for because of his devil may care attitude. It was an archetype that worked perfectly in Pitch Black, as well as the third film in the series Riddick. The problem with The Chronicles of Riddick—problems rather—is the sheer size of the story they are attempting to insert him into. Chronicles is a full-on space opera. There are prophecies, warlords, intrigue, and treachery. It's a lot; and when compared to its predecessor, it doesn't feel at all like a sequel. As one reviewer put it, it's "Space Conan," but that's not a compliment. Where Conan the Barbarian juggles the heft of its story well, Chronicles crumbles beneath it. Hence why it was reviewed so poorly (29% with 167 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes) and failed to recoup its budget. It grossed just $115.8 million on a budget north of $120 million. But, hey, it does boast a handful of classically cheesy Diesel one-liners, some laughable self-seriousness, and a smattering of shoddy CGI. So sit back, crush a can of Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout from North Coast Brewing, and prepare yourself for the Underverse! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, Chumpzilla, and Mayor McCheese are being taken to the threshold! This Week’s Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Is the scale and scope of Chronicles too much for its titular character? Charles Elliott & Eliseo Garcia of Abysmal Dawn & I have a conversation about being one of the last bands on tour before the pandemic, if they have become more of a craft beer enthusiasts, how they have been filling the void, remaining in contact with their fans, when will touring return, the impact of the pandemic on the record industry, their hangover cures, Charles' facial hair & meeting Fred Armisen. Throughout this chat Charles was drinking North Coast Brewing's "Scrimshaw" pilsner, Eliseo was drinking 4 Buds Brewing's "Dinosaur Hair" & Matt was drinking Mellön 's "Ce Soir Lager est dans tes yeux" which was a glorious India Pale Lager that was hopped with Motueka & Nelson Sauvin Hops. This brand-new brewery are basically my neighbors & I was very stoked to be invited to visit them tonight. This brew pours out with a light yellowish veil, smashed a sweet melon nose & slaps a crisp cereal malty finish & 5e Baron 's "Améthyste". North Coast Brewing, makers of Old Rasputin . . . and other beers I’m sure. Actually they make a lot of beer. Like a whole lot, and if the awards are to be believed, a lot of good beer. We’ll see if they live up to their hype and see if this brewery gets a gold from us as we, Have a Drink.
Our 3rd official, and technically 4th, tasting episode! We know its summer but we did lagers on the last block so we went for dark beers. We got our hands on the Black Butte Porter from Deschutes Brewing Co. for obvious reasons and two different versions of Old Rasputin from North Coast Brewing and Culminating Mass from Breakside Brewing. It's a Portland heavy tasting but there's a lot going on in the PDX right now and we for sure talk about that too. Cheers and Enjoy!
This is our first part episode of our music series that focuses on the infamous 27 Club, in which we talk about three music artists that unfortunately died at the age of 27 and the impact they have on us. Join us as we talk about the life and myth surrounding the Bluesman Robert Johnson, the electrifying talent that is Jimi Hendrix, and the free-spirited Jim Morrison of The Doors. This week were are sipping on North Coast Brewing's Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale and Russian River Brewing's Pliny the Elder Double IPA while we also share our thoughts on the reveal of Sony's Playstation 5 on Sip on This! Hope y'all enjoy our report and knowledge on these artists and hope you continue hearing our future installments. Cheers. #blacklivesmatter

In this episode, I talk to Gowan Batist of Fortunate Farm in Caspar, CA off the Mendocino Coast. She manages a compost operation using spent brewing grains from her partnership with North Coast Brewing Company and runs a market garden that includes pumpkins and flowers as well as planned grazing with sheep, cattle, and geese. Gowan spoke about her partnership with North Coast Brewing and how farming is a family affair. You'll also hear: >> How using compost has increased the organic matter in Fortunate Farm's sandy soils >> How she's been mentored by women in agriculture, including her mother and grandmother >> How their irrigation works being beside the ocean >> How list-making helps keep Gowan stay on task throughout the day and manage the complexity that is farming >> Why at 30 years old, Gowan strives to have mentors that are younger than herself >> A discussion about the history and cultivation of dahlias >> Why dogs are Gowan's favorite farming 'tool'! >> Why she encourages young farmers to reach out to green businesses and B corporations to form partnerships as a way of getting their farm off the ground About the Guest: Gowan Batist is the Co-Owner of Fortunate Farm and the Sustainability Manager at North Coast Brewing Company. Gowan studied metal fabrication and sustainable agriculture in college and farmed in Portland, Oregon before returning to Mendocino to manage the Noyo Food Forest, Fort Bragg Unified School District’s farm-to-school program. During her three seasons as manager of the Noyo Food Forest, Gowan began composting spent grain from North Coast Brewing Company as a hobby. The hobby became a mission and a career and evolved into a formal partnership with North Coast Brewing Company.
Episode 8 Recording Date: 11/11/2019 Beers Reviewed Common Beer- Birdsong Brewing – Brown Ale Mike – North Coast – Old Rasputin Big Ray – Shiner – Candied Pecan Porter Craft Beer Bucket List with Mike and Big Ray. We bring "Beers you Need to Try, Before You Die!" Mike and Big Ray have been best friends for over 20 years. Mike, who is a professor at Eastern Kentucky University and part owner of Dreaming Creek Brewery with locations in Richmond and London, Kentucky, brings a professional and well rounded knowledge of beers and how it's brewed. Big Ray who is a PMP certified Project Manager and part time You Tuber residing in Broken Arrow, OK travels frequently for work and enjoys craft beers all across the United States. Big Ray loves to enjoy beer but doesn't have the same knowledge base Mike has. The two vastly different takes on beer bring a well rounded review of the beers that are reviewed on this podcast. Each episode will feature three beers. Mike will have 1 beer to try, Big Ray will have 1 beer to try, and there will be a beer that both Mike and Big Ray try and review together. Mike and Big Ray both travel frequently and have the opportunity to pick up beers along the way and send them to each other to enjoy and review! Episode 65: Happy new week everyone! This week's show is a very important episode but also comes with a warning. Of all of our NSFW shows, this is one of the NSFWiest so please keep that in mind. Rick has a HUGE revelation that leads the discussion down one gigantic rabbit hole. Cheri and Rick discuss and explore some issues dealing with the trans community in their typical irreverent ways, yet still somehow do so with respect. Go figure. We'd love to have your feedback on how they handled it all. The Live Beer Review is PranQster by North Coast Brewing.

In which Meg has her best pairing EVER! Named after the jazz musician, but sharing the same name as the Monk in the opening sequence, we drank Brother Thelonious from North Coast Brewing. This was a delightfully malty brew with the flavors of dried fruit (raisins, prunes, etc). Beyond the pairing (that Quetina did NOT hate!) we got into Moloch the Conqueror, from the Bible. We also talked about cyber predators (that is some scary ass shit, if we're being totally honest). Then we got into the episode- Willow meets a guy Malcolm online (online for what?) and Buffy is concerned... turns out for a good reason, it's a demon in the internet. Cheers beer lovers! We are back with a new review from a classic brewery in the craft beer world. Today's beer is Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale from North Coast Brewing in Northern California. With a floral nose of bananas, cloves, and spices, this lighter beer is meant for hot days with a light banana and fruit flavor. But don't let the lighter drink-ability and color fool you, this Pranqster is not messing around with the ABV. The problem with this beer? One of us is not a fan and this episode is definitely lacking harmony. Find out who doesn't want this and what the other likes so much about it, as well as some substitutions if you don't like this style.Have you had Pranqster? Let us know about it!Make sure to follow the show on all social media outlets @BeerHarmonyShow and check out www.beerharmonyshow.com for even more beer! Please send us your beer suggestions and show feedback to beerharmonyshow@gmail.com. Cheers!

Beats, Beards & Brews heads to the beach for a "fantastic episode" that is also very educational—get ready for some learnin'! Eric, Evan and Dan share their reviews of A Perfect Circle's first studio album in 14 years, Eat the Elephant (poor Billy Howerdel!). The mellow, piano-driven melodies that dominate this album may not be the most suitable music for the beach, but it's still worth a listen. The three amigos then get into some summer beard care tips that will certainly help you out when hitting the beach, lake or pool. Remember to always rinse your beard and watch out for flesh-eating bacteria. Dan and Eric close out the episode by rattling off some of their new-found, extensive knowledge of elephant seals. On this episode you will learn about the different types of elephant seals, what an elephant seal sounds like and the percentage of milkfat in elephant seal milk. Oh, and the gang also reviews the 9.0% abv Beachmaster Imperial IPA from North Coast Brewing. "If you want to get drunk efficiently..."

Hoppy Hanukkah! Beery Christmas! What beer pun can we make about Kwanza?! FRIENDS, BIDDIES, COUNTRYMEN... it's been a year. A year for thinking, a year for drinking, a year for more drinking. On this episode, we send 2017 out with a BANG* (*a beer)! Actually, TWO beers. Guest Joey LePage stops by the studio to bid the year adieu. We review North Coast Brewing Cranberry-Quince Berliner Weisse, which tastes SUSPICIOUSLY like a cider (hmmmm, North Coast, want to fess up to something?) and Joey brings us a BONUS BEER: Mortal Kombat X Scorpion Imperial Stout. The only thing more shocking than the fact that Mortal Kombat has BEERS is that this one is actually really, really good. Biddies - it's been an honor, a pleasure, and a blast! Wow that year went fast! Here we are at last! We will be back in the new year with another full glass! (That last one was a stretch). Be safe, be well, and as always, thanks for drinking! XOXO THE BIDDIES

This week Gabe and Jeff tackle the nerd Mount Everest that is task management. In some Twitter circles, you can't throw a Field Notes book without hitting someone talking about what they did to become productive. The journey into the depths of productivity porn was eased somewhat but the excellent Old Stock Ale by North Coast Brewing. Unlike the last time Jeff and Gabe talked about task management, the word "OmniFocus" has been replaced with the word "Taskpaper" and a lot of the approach to how they manage their busy lives has undergone significant change.
