In this episode Jeremy and Tim are joined by writer, historian, and friend of the show Simon Reynolds to discuss British musical trends of the 1970s and his life as a music journalist. Simon is arguably the most important music critic writing today, having penned seminal books on post-punk, electronic dance music, feminist rock and much more. In this interview he mostly talks about his most recent book, ‘Shock and Awe: Glam Rock and Its Legacy, from the Seventies to the Twenty-First Century', sharing stories from his childhood interest in the decadent world of Glam. The three discuss how so many artists came to aestheticise a rejection of suburbia, the purply gauze of Top of the Pops, and thinking the Situationists were a band. They unpick how Punk is imagined and historicised versus how it was experienced, how Simon came to reappraise the 60s against a hostile critical culture, and consider the role of the music press historically and today. For patrons, our extended edition also includes a discussion around Simon's 2011 book ‘Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to its Own Past'. Tim, Jeremy and Simon recount the particular conjuncture from which the book arose, tease out its key theses, and apply those to contemporary music culture. Simon Reynolds is the author of ‘Blissed Out: The Raptures of Rock', ‘The Sex Revolts: Gender, Rebellion and Rock 'N' Roll' with Joy Press, ‘Energy Flash: A Journey Through Rave Music and Dance Culture', ‘Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978–1984', ‘Bring The Noise: 20 Years of Writing About Hip Rock and Hip-Hop', ‘Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to Its Own Past' and ‘Shock and Awe: Glam Rock and Its Legacy, from the Seventies to the Twenty-First Century'. His next book, ‘Futuromania: Electronic Dreams from Moroder to Migos' is forthcoming. Tracklist: Scott Joplin - The Entertainer Ian Dury & the Blockheads - Plaistow Patricia The Rezillos - Top Of The Pops The Specials - Ghost Town Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love

Aye lads and lasses, results went our way the last few days and we now head into a huge game against Watford tomorrow at the Stadium of Light! Our Gav, Chris and Martin sat down to shake their heads at the insanity of finding ourselves in this position in spite of every obstacle placed in our path. What's the crack? The excitement is building, the stadium is sold out and the scene is set for a crazy finish to the 22/23 EFL Championship season. So how is everyone feeling? Just been a mad couple weeks hasn't it… Should we all calm down? Results elsewhere have put it in our hands now, so will the Lads rise to the challenge in front of what looks to be our highest attendance this season? The lads freak out a bit about how well everything is going… it can't continue can it? This is Sunlun after all. How do Watford look coming into the game? They seem a bit of a wounded animal currently, so how should we approach them? Should we just go for the kill? Gav says something inspirational and doubles down on his bold prediction about finishing in the top six and somehow making it to Wembley for a third consecutive year, but are Chris and Martin as confident? Is someone a little too confident? All this and more! HA'WAY THE LADS! BRING THE NOISE! #SAFC #EFL #EFLChampionship #TilTheEnd Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Most would agree that how we show up in the world can be shaped by our environment, emotions and our feelings of connection. If we showed up as a dimmed, dull version we may react out of sorts, causing harm, doubt and hurt. That's why it's important to take responsibility for any word or deed you put out there and own your shit. Sometimes we have to bring the noise down a bit and chew some humble pie and others call us to bring the noise to our own fioble. Hey, welcome to episode one hundred ninety seven of Above Ground Podcast. The only Nippertown podcast from the peerspective of mental health. This week we talk responsibility and knowing when to say you're wrong. This week Will is given us a peak into a recent text he received from a listener, and must take responsibility for his word. Leaders lead, and leaders acknowledge when they are wrong. In a dire time for legitimate sources of information and not just listening to the mainstream jargon or “expert” influencers, who are busy being the new super family poster children of consumerism. Will believes his integrity depands to provide accurate content and to uphold one of the most important tenants of service, do no harm. Check it out and let us know what you think. You can tell us personally to our faces at Upstate Punk Rock Flea Market, this Sunday March 26,2023 from 11am-5pm at Empire Live Albany. 93 North Pearl Street Albany, NY. Come by and give spring a slightly darker, macabre and underground feel. Channel your inner Joey Ramone or Debbie Harry and rock out to Radio Radio X spun punk music. Thank you for listening and please come back next week for another episode. Please be kind and look out for eachother out there. Get well, be safe and stay ABOVE....

On Sunday, April 24, the independent Amazon Labor Union held a rally outside the JFK8 fulfillment center on Staten Island, New York, where, just one month ago, workers shocked the world by becoming the first Amazon workforce in the US to successfully vote to unionize. With supporters from organized labor and the surrounding community showing up in full force, along with high-profile appearances from Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, worker-organizers with the ALU showed their support for their coworkers at the LDJ5 sorting center, another facility in the same complex that is voting in their own union election this week. If LDJ5 becomes the second Amazon facility to unionize, it will prove that what happened at JFK8 was not a fluke, but the beginning of a historic movement to unionize the second largest private employer in the US and one of the most powerful corporations in the world. In this special episode of Working People, we put together a compilation of speeches from the rally along with interviews TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez conducted on the ground with Amazon workers and other special guests. Speakers/interviewees include: Christian Smalls, president of the Amazon Labor Union; Derrick Palmer, vice president of organizing for the Amazon Labor Union; Jordan Flowers, cofounder of the Congress of Essential Workers and the Amazon Labor Union; Senator Bernie Sanders; Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; Karen Ponce, interim secretary of the Amazon Labor Union; Julian Mitchell-Israel, LDJ5 Amazon worker, field organizer for the Amazon Labor Union; Maddie Wesley, LDJ5 Amazon worker, treasurer of the Amazon Labor Union; Kshama Sawant, (socialist) Seattle City Council Member; Sara Nelson, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO; Charles Jenkins, elected officer of the Transport Worker Union Local 100 and president of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) NY Chapter; Brittany Ramos DeBarros, candidate for Congress in New York's 11th District; Luis Feliz Leon, staff writer and organizer for Labor Notes; Michelle Valentin Nieves, worker-organizer with the Amazon Labor Union.Pre-Production: Maximillian AlvarezPost-Production: Jules TaylorRead the transcript of this podcast and see full show notes here: https://therealnews.com/jeff-bezos-your-time-is-coming-amazon-workers-on-staten-island-bring-the-noise-ahead-of-second-union-voteHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

Today we talk with with meditation teacher James Baraz about the benefits of sitting one hour per day. But how is possible to do that when the world is on fire? Plagues! Insurrections! 90-Day Fiance! But also: being stuck in quarantine with three toddlers jumping around naked and smacking you in the face. Guess what– it doesn't have to make you crazy.
