Chas Smith (@BeachGrit) is a luminous figure in surfing, an adept journalist, and author. Born in San Jose, California in 1976, Smith's family uprooted and landed in Coos Bay, Oregon where he learned to surf. After studying intercultural studies in undergrad, Smith graduated with a master's in linguistics, going on to study in Egypt and at Oxford. Following a story he published in Australia Surfing Life about surfing in Yemen in the wake of 9/11, Smith went on to report in Lebanon, Somalia, Israel-Palestine, and wound up a captive of Hezbollah reporting for Current TV. In the early-aughts, Smith worked for Vice. Soon, he joined Stab magazine at the behest of Derek Rielly, then editor-in-chief, and they set in on an unparalleled era in surf journalism. Some of Stab's more controversial content garnered unsavory public spats that earned Smith some anti-Semitic epithets, and then in 2014, Smith and Reilly began Beach Grit—a deep well of incendiary, tongue-in-cheek honesty drenched in satire, sans filter. He's now a regular contributor to The Surfer's Journal, with bylines at Esquire and Playboy, and the author of Paradise, Now Go to Hell, a cultural vignette of Oahu's North Shore, which was a finalist for the PEN Center USA Award for Nonfiction. If you dig this podcast, will you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts? Dirty Water: The BeachGrit Podcast featuring Chas Smith and Derek Rielly
If you knew Chris Cote like I know Chris Cote, you'd find the sweetest Peewee Herman-esque lover of life, gags, tumbling, surf all day, no-alcohol parties all night, and positivity wherever he can find it. Also a shill for the World Surf League, but we all gotta make a living, the truth be told. The respect is mutual, as you might imagine, with Chris Cote describing Chas Smith as the Tucker Carlson of surf media and BeachGrit as the sport's own Fox News. A heady double compliment!

After a week off (to put all the focus on Songs of Our Lives), The Seltzer Salon returns with a real heavy hitter. Vinny Golia is an all-time great. A composer, multi-instrumentalist, big thinker, teacher, and so much more, all of these facets show up in his project, Even to This Day. The second Movement, Syncretism: For The Draw, is out now and stretches across nearly 12 hours and 110 tracks. Collaborators include Susan Alcorn, Chas Smith, Nels Cline, Alkis Nicholadis, and so many more. It's a sprawing, magnificent document. Golia talks about contributing to the positive vibrations of the universe, a notion that resonates with me, and it's a jumping off point for this conversation (along with so many other things).Even to This Day, Movement Two: Syncretism, For The DrawThe Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. Each episode features a musician, artist, writer, or anyone, really, focusing on a single project or idea. I know we all have limited time each day, so I wanted to do something a little smaller scale with just as much impact, so episodes will be 25-45 minutes in length. Music artist Chas Smith aka COLICCHIE joins Dr. Terry Sellers & counselor Jared Miller to share his story of recovery. Chas starts off by sharing what his life looks like today. A little over a year ago, he started the Pittsburgh Recovery Center. In September, he got engaged to his fiancé Hannah & explains how the bond he feels with his daughter fills the void he previously felt. Chas answered a question from Anthony (a listener) about his why for staying clean & how he deals with the monotony of life. Chas briefly touched on what led up to his time in active addiction. He spends most of the time in part two sharing about how he started making music as a form of therapy for himself. This was an incredibly powerful episode! We hope you like it & will share it with friends and family.

This was a series of albums intended as background mood music for couples. The subtitle on the cover of One Stormy Night is “Whoever you are, you hold in your heart the memory of…One Stormy Night.” On the back cover, it says, “A spectacular thunderstorm, the sound of rain and romantic music combine to create One Stormy Night. The Mystic Moods Orchestra has many releases in to the early 1970s, at least two of which utilized the Moog Modular synthesizer. This album, however, is pure field recordings creatively combined with music. 4:16 Sanford Ponder, “Frontier” from Etosha - Private Music In The Land Of Dry Water (1985 Private Music). Arranged, produced, written, Fairlight CMI Synthesizer, Yamaha DX-7 Synthesizer, Roland GR-707 Synthesizer, Sanford Ponder; piano, Clyde Criner. 9:37 D. A German electronic composer and member of Cluster in this first solo album transitions to a period of acoustic music, but there are synths being used on this track. 6:36 Thom Holmes, rolling, distant thunder, field recording. 0:59 Yavomag, Rubikdice & Chilx, “Tokyo Rain” from The Ronin EP (2022 Yavomag, Rubikdice & Chilx). House music with a rainy vibe. 2:23 Thom Holmes, crack of thunder field recording.0:52 Dean Elliott And His Orchestra, “Rain” from Zounds! What Sounds! (1962 Capitol). A funny relic from the days when mixing sounds effects into music was a fresh idea. Very cleverly edited by Phil Kaye; Producer, John Palladino. 2:49 Thom Holmes, “Rain Drone” an alternate version and test for a track I later released called Requiem for the Rain (2016 not released). In this piece, I started with the sound of rainfall that I recorded and then processed it using the synthesizer component of MetaSynth to transform the raindrops and downpour into drones and harmonic points. All of the sounds in this work are derived from processing the sound of rain. 12:29 Thom Holmes, thunder, field recording. 1:15 Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch, “Rain” from Blade Runner 2049 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)(2017 Epic). It's the walk up to the teller with a note asking for bills from the top two drawers, no dye-packs or GPS, that had me hooked. Chas Smith's latest work is a biography of his cousin, Daniel Courson, who robbed over 40 banks in two intense runs, one with a long period on the lam. Back it all up to a celebrity status evangelical childhood, and you've got a page-turner. Tyler Bruer guest hosts with Kevin Miller. Enjoy.

It must be "Bob's" will that we were forced by events beyond our control to do a rerun yet again, because this is an especially good one we'd have totally forgotten about otherwise. The ESO Swamp Radio spouting this show was done in early 2003, a few days after the tragic Columbia space shuttle explosion... and yet the space collage by Chas Smith which is also in the show predates it, from around 1998.Special thanks to all the arteests who contributed the collages, especially Fernandinande LeMur.

Rerun of #868 from 2002 -- so it's an old and very different war, but some things never change. A little bit of everything: ESO Swamp Radio, Puzzling Evidence, Zoogz Rift, a lotta LeMur, Heart Ignition, The Swinging Love Corpses, Heart Ignition, Drexel and so much more. This was when Prof. Chas Smith, Zoogz, and frequent caller Dr. Dark were all still on this earthly plane, and Lonesome Cowboy Dave wasn't really lonesome at all. We couldn't do a new show this week because our old guard dog Buddy got in a civil war with other dogs, and lost, so Stang was busy nursing the battered mutt. Buddy is okay though.

We've all experienced moments where we've reacted negatively to criticism. Maybe it was because we didn't like or respect the individual giving the criticism, the criticism wasn't asked for, or the message felt hypocritical. The truth is, it's easy to take criticism the wrong way. So how can we take criticism in an open way that will allow us to grow? Can we get over being offended long enough to find value in what we're hearing? And what about giving criticism? That's a whole other ball of wax. On this episode Neight, Willy and Cameron discuss what they've learned about criticism. Neight talks about how criticism is allowing him to shape into the man he wants to be. Willy talks about learning how to give criticism. And Cameron goes into getting over being offended enough to apply the information given to us. This week, we have a WarStory for the books. Chas Smith, AKA Colicchie is a Hip Hop artist and well known voice in the recovery movement. He shares with us just how deep the hole got for him before he put down the shovel. Hear how he finally was able to tap into a power greater than himself to stay clean and how being a father has become the most important role in his life. We're truly blessed and grateful to be able to share his story with you. You can follow Colicchie on Instagram at @colicchie and twitter at @colicchie412. You can also find him on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/colicchie Check out his videos on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFODwqBogxHFegseFsVHh5A Thank you to everyone who supports the show. I remember the first time I heard the Daniel Lanois tunes From Eno's Apollo album, I didn't really care for them. I didn't like the pedal steel guitar. I absolutely hated country music back then and I associated the sound of pedal steel with country and nothing else. Eventually, the tunes grew on me and I've come to love the sound of pedal steel guitar. I also came around on country-tinged music as I fell in love with indie-folk which can make great use of traditional instrumentation minus the pickups trucks, girls & booze of crappy country. This brings me back around to pedal steel in ambient. There's not a ton of it out there but definitely enough for a good mix. There are four main practitioners of ambient twang - Daniel Lanois, Chuck Johnson, Bruce Kaphan and Chas Smith. I think they all have appeared in earlier Low Light Mixes. All four are in this mix as well as Eno/Lanois tunes, some oddball selections, and some YouTube recordings. Many of the tracks here use an actual pedal steel guitar and some use lap steel. Up next - synth sequencer heaven. Cheers!
