Also a shill for the World Surf League, but we all gotta make a living, the truth be told. The respect is mutual, as you might imagine, with Chris Cote describing Chas Smith as the Tucker Carlson of surf media and BeachGrit as the sport's own Fox News. A heady double compliment!

The second Movement, Syncretism: For The Draw, is out now and stretches across nearly 12 hours and 110 tracks. Collaborators include Susan Alcorn, Chas Smith, Nels Cline, Alkis Nicholadis, and so many more. It's a sprawing, magnificent document. Golia talks about contributing to the positive vibrations of the universe, a notion that resonates with me, and it's a jumping off point for this conversation (along with so many other things).Even to This Day, Movement Two: Syncretism, For The DrawThe Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. Each episode features a musician, artist, writer, or anyone, really, focusing on a single project or idea. I know we all have limited time each day, so I wanted to do something a little smaller scale with just as much impact, so episodes will be 25-45 minutes in length. Music artist Chas Smith aka COLICCHIE joins Dr. Terry Sellers & counselor Jared Miller to share his story of recovery. Chas starts off by sharing what his life looks like today. A little over a year ago, he started the Pittsburgh Recovery Center. In September, he got engaged to his fiancé Hannah & explains how the bond he feels with his daughter fills the void he previously felt. Chas answered a question from Anthony (a listener) about his why for staying clean & how he deals with the monotony of life. Chas briefly touched on what led up to his time in active addiction. He spends most of the time in part two sharing about how he started making music as a form of therapy for himself. This was an incredibly powerful episode! We hope you like it & will share it with friends and family.

Episode 85 Rain Music   Playlist Dean Evenson, “Thunder Intro” from Forest Rain (1993 Soundings of the Planet). 0:28 Ulrich Schnauss, “Molfsee” from Far Away Trains Passing By (2002 City Centre Offices). Written and produced by German artists Ulrich Schnauss. Schnauss is also a current member of Tangerine Dream, joining in 2014 and working with a renewed lineup since the death of original TG member Edgar Frose in 2015. 8:07 Ana Roxanne, “It's A Rainy Day On The Cosmic Shore” from ~ ~ ~ (2019 Leaving Records). Limited edition cassette release. Ana Roxanne is an intersex Southeast Asian musician born and raised in the Bay area. Some low-fi and hi-fi rain sounds and synthesis. 5:03 Paul Beaver and Bernard Krause, “Ragnarök” from Ragnarök (1969 Limelight). The duo's first album of electronic music following the release of their Nonesuch Guide to Electronic Music (1968). They feature the Moog Modular synthesizer throughout and use it to synthesize the sounds of rain and thunder on this track. 3:22 Dean Evenson, “Thunder Streams” from Forest Rain (1993 Soundings of the Planet). Everson has been producing soothing electronic and flute sounds for many years, this example is from 1993 and includes rain and thunder effects. Native and silver flutes, keyboards, Dean Evenson; harp, Dudley Evenson; cello, Jonathan Kramer; guitar, Tim McHugh; percussion, Stuart Glasser. 6:20 Mystic Moods Orchestra, introductory sounds of the storm and the sea from One Stormy Night (1966 Phillips). 0:52 Steve Birchall, “Summer Memories” from Reality Gates (1973 Poseidon Electronic Music Studio). An obscure and interesting album of privately produced electronic music from the early 1970s. Billed as "electronic meditations by Steve Birchall." Equipment used was a potpourri of systems, effects, and an EMS VCS-3 synthesizer: Ampex mm 1000 16 track recorder; DBX noise reduction; Spectrasonics console; Studer A-80 recorder; Eventide Clockworks Instant Phaser; Cooper Time Cube; EMT reverb; Neumann VMS 70-SX68 computerized lathe; EMS VCS-3 (Putney) synthesizer. 10:49 Agostino Nirodh Fortini (Nirodh), “Aquatic Round” from Suoni Immaginari (2020 Black Sweat Records). Italian artist and release. Composed, recorded, and produced by Agostino Nirodh Fortini. 2:52 Mystic Moods Orchestra, “A Dream" from One Stormy Night (1966 Phillips). In the mid-sixties, recording engineer and sound recordist Brad Miller had the brilliant idea of combining the recorded sounds of nature with sweeping, orchestral renditions of popular music. This was a series of albums intended as background mood music for couples. The subtitle on the cover of One Stormy Night is “Whoever you are, you hold in your heart the memory of…One Stormy Night.” On the back cover, it says, “A spectacular thunderstorm, the sound of rain and romantic music combine to create One Stormy Night. The Mystic Moods Orchestra has many releases in to the early 1970s, at least two of which utilized the Moog Modular synthesizer. This album, however, is pure field recordings creatively combined with music. 4:16 Sanford Ponder, “Frontier” from Etosha - Private Music In The Land Of Dry Water (1985 Private Music). Arranged, produced, written, Fairlight CMI Synthesizer, Yamaha DX-7 Synthesizer, Roland GR-707 Synthesizer, Sanford Ponder; piano, Clyde Criner. 9:37 D. It's the walk up to the teller with a note asking for bills from the top two drawers, no dye-packs or GPS, that had me hooked.  Chas Smith's latest work is a biography of his cousin, Daniel Courson, who robbed over 40 banks in two intense runs, one with a long period on the lam.  Back it all up to a celebrity status evangelical childhood, and you've got a page-turner.  Tyler Bruer guest hosts with Kevin Miller.  Enjoy.

It must be "Bob's" will that we were forced by events beyond our control to do a rerun yet again, because this is an especially good one we'd have totally forgotten about otherwise.  The ESO Swamp Radio spouting this show was done in early 2003, a few days after the tragic Columbia space shuttle explosion... and yet the space collage by Chas Smith which is also in the show predates it, from around 1998.Special thanks to all the arteests who contributed the collages, especially Fernandinande LeMur.

A little bit of everything: ESO Swamp Radio, Puzzling Evidence, Zoogz Rift, a lotta LeMur, Heart Ignition, The Swinging Love Corpses, Heart Ignition, Drexel and so much more. This was when Prof. Chas Smith, Zoogz, and frequent caller Dr. Dark were all still on this earthly plane, and Lonesome Cowboy Dave wasn't really lonesome at all. We couldn't do a new show this week because our old guard dog Buddy got in a civil war with other dogs, and lost, so Stang was busy nursing the battered mutt. Buddy is okay though.

"It would, when you're caught up, when you're actually caught up in the grips of addiction and all that, it's not like I could just stop, I needed to go to treatment. I needed to go to jail. I needed like something to happen in order for me to really hit that bottom." Pittsburgh rapper Colicchie rose up from years of struggling with addiction to find success and hope in his music. A rapid decline into drug addiction in his teenage years led to troubles with the law and multiple stints in rehab in his early twenties. After getting clean at age 23, Colicchie began writing raps, turning stories from his tumultuous life into confessional, unflinchingly honest songs. Themes of addiction, depravity, and recovery came up time and time again in songs like "Drug Addiction," "Recover or Die," and "To Whom It May Concern." A video for "Drug Addiction" went viral in 2017, reaching millions of listeners, many of whom were struggling with addiction themselves and took inspiration from Colicchie's story. Colicchie was born Chas Smith in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up without a father, raised by grandparents who picked up the slack for Smith's mother, who dealt with addiction herself. He began experimenting with drugs in his early teens and was fully immersed in heroin and crack addiction by the end of high school. Years of substance abuse led Smith to a dangerous life on the streets and multiple overdoses, all bracketed by short-lived attempts to give drugs up. In 2005 he began rapping, using the creative outlet to support his efforts to stay clean. Performing around Pittsburgh and working toward recording music, Smith drew content for his songs from his own harrowing experiences with addiction and recovery. (CLEAN FOR RADIO) This one gets REALLY WEIRD. It's a new arrangement of fairly old stuff, all from late year 2000 and early 2001, all from Chas Smith's ESO Swamp Radio at WCSB Cleveland. Every month back then Stang used to compile the clips from that show that he had used on Hour of Slack, just in case he might need ways to reduce show production time in his old age. This is the first of those compilations,. Stang did go to the trouble of taking the random parts and organizing them so that they sound less random and more like we MEANT it to be that way. “We” being the late Professor Chas Smith, who was the host, producer, mixboard operator, and guiding star; Lonesome Cowboy Dave, who had been doing radio and music with Chas for many years, and Stang, the new guy to their show. The Other Side of Hell Podcast

We've all experienced moments where we've reacted negatively to criticism. Maybe it was because we didn't like or respect the individual giving the criticism, the criticism wasn't asked for, or the message felt hypocritical. The truth is, it's easy to take criticism the wrong way. So how can we take criticism in an open way that will allow us to grow? Can we get over being offended long enough to find value in what we're hearing? And what about giving criticism? That's a whole other ball of wax. On this episode Neight, Willy and Cameron discuss what they've learned about criticism. Neight talks about how criticism is allowing him to shape into the man he wants to be. Willy talks about learning how to give criticism. And Cameron goes into getting over being offended enough to apply the information given to us. This week, we have a WarStory for the books. Chas Smith, AKA Colicchie is a Hip Hop artist and well known voice in the recovery movement. He shares with us just how deep the hole got for him before he put down the shovel. Hear how he finally was able to tap into a power greater than himself to stay clean and how being a father has become the most important role in his life. We're truly blessed and grateful to be able to share his story with you. You can follow Colicchie on Instagram at @colicchie and twitter at @colicchie412.   I remember the first time I heard the Daniel Lanois tunes From Eno's Apollo album, I didn't really care for them. I didn't like the pedal steel guitar. I absolutely hated country music back then and I associated the sound of pedal steel with country and nothing else.    Eventually, the tunes grew on me and I've come to love the sound of pedal steel guitar. I also came around on country-tinged music as I fell in love with indie-folk which can make great use of traditional instrumentation minus the pickups trucks, girls & booze of crappy country.   This brings me back around to pedal steel in ambient. There's not a ton of it out there but definitely enough for a good mix. There are four main practitioners of ambient twang - Daniel Lanois, Chuck Johnson, Bruce Kaphan and Chas Smith. I think they all have appeared in earlier Low Light Mixes. All four are in this mix as well as Eno/Lanois tunes, some oddball selections, and some YouTube recordings. Many of the tracks here use an actual pedal steel guitar and some use lap steel.   Up next - synth sequencer heaven.   Cheers!     T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Brian Eno - Weightless 04:15    Bruce Kaphan - Outpost 11:55    Chas Smith - Santa Fe 14:00    Chuck Johnson - Balm of Gilead 21:05    Daniel Lanois - In Crystal 24:22    Will Van Horn - Aphex Twin - Avril 14 on pedal steel 26:18    Joe Carolino - Ambient drone with lap steel & guitar 32:53    Youth - Lotus Rhubarb(Colliding Sky Whale Dub) 34:18    The National Pool - Solace 36:15    Ryan Lutton - Ambient Improv XXIII 39:03    Brian Eno - Deep Blue Day 42:28    Xploding Plastix - Ritalin For Four Pedal Steel Guitars 49:05    Chuck Johnson - Eye on the Sparrow 55:42    Brian Eno - Last Step from the Surface 59:31    end
