This week, we're sharing an interview with 2 contributors an amazing history of anti-racist organizing in the late 1980's through the mid 1990's in Portland, Oregon, and with ripples across the so-called USA & beyond. In 2020 KBOO radio released a serialized podcast which became the basis for the book. A brief intro to the book can be found below... Crenshaw is an independent hip hop artist, respected emcee, poet, educator, and activist. Crenshaw is the lead US organizer for the Afrikan Hiphop Caravan and uses cultural activism as a means to develop international solidarity related to human rights and justice through hip hop and popular education. Crenshaw was a founding member of the Minneapolis Baldies and Anti Racist Action. He was a coproducer and narrator of the podcast version of It Did Happen Here. Moe Bowstern is a alum of the anarchist space in Chiacgo known as the @-zone that lasted from 1993 to 2003. She's also a writer, laborer, Fisher Poet, and DIY social practice artist. For the hour, we talk about the book and podcast, the reach, the resonance to anti-racist struggle today in Portland and beyond. We also talk about the toll of the violence faced and engaged by folks pushing back the organized white supremacy of the day, police and institutional violence and other, related topics. If you would like people featured in this book to come and speak at your institution, you can reach them at ItDidHappenHerePodcast at gmail dot com, through PM Press, or via the IDHH instagram. This book was published by PM Press as a part of the Working Class History series. Another featured title in that series that was recently released was a similar documentary history with a really good narrative on the history of Anti-Racist Action in the 1990's and early 2000's throughout the midwest of Turtle Island, both in so-called Canada and the USA, and bits of other areas. Hopefully we'll feature a chat with one of the contributors to that book entitled We Go Where They Go: The Story of Anti-Racist Action soon on this show. . ... . .. Week 1 of the NFL is now in the books, and what a weekend it was, despite starting with a drab affair in Philadelphia. The guys talk all the latest news and all the weekends talking points. On Sunday, Ryan Fitzpatrick started the season with a career game, Alvin Kamara is still brilliant, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs looks a lot of fun, and when can a draw feel like a loss. On Monday night, Khalil Mack makes an instant impact for Chiacgo, Los Angeles make a solid start, whilst Oakland don't and Green Bay Packers really need Aaron Rodgers don't they, so it's lucky he's the best, even on one leg. Along with this, there is also an NFL Fantasy round up, and 4th and Inches has his customary Cleveland Frowns.
At just before 3pm on May 25th, 1979. American Airlines Flight 191 begins to push back from gate K5 at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The airport is busy, It is the Friday before the Memorial Day long weekend and many are travelling to be with their families or going on holiday. The aircraft chosen to fly the route. a McDonnel Douglas DC-10 is at capacity, carrying 258 passengers and 13 crew members. American 191’s destination is Los Angeles, California. In command of the aircraft is Captain Walter Lux, aged 53. A veteran pilot, with more than 22,000 hours flying experience. Supporting him is First Officer James Dillard, aged 49 who has more than 9,000 hours flight time. He will be piloting the aircraft this afternoon Finally, completing the crew is Flight Engineer Alfred Udovich, aged 56. Before the introduction of advanced electronics, a flight engineer was the third member of an airliner’s flight crew, tasked with monitoring, operating and fixing an aircraft’s systems while in flight. The DC-10 is a complex aircraft, with three engines. Two are mounted on the wings, while one is mounted on the tail of the aircraft. This configuration of aircraft, known as tri-jet was very popular with US airlines during the 1970s and 1980s, offering a compromise in size and range between larger four engine aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and smaller twin-engine aircraft such as the Airbus A300 After pushing back from Gate K5, the pilots begin their taxi to Runway 32 Right. As the crew travel across the busy airport the crew complete their final pre-flight checks on the move so they can take-off as soon as they arrive at the runway. This is known as a rolling takeoff. It is Flight Engineer Udovich who reads through the aircraft’s checklist while Captain Lux and First Officer Dillard perform the necessary checks.. At 2 minutes past 3 the aircraft is approaching the runway and Chiacgo’s Air Traffic Control gives American 191 clearance for takeoff. Captain Lux acknowledges the tower’s instruction. It is the last time anybody will hear from American Airlines 191. This is the story of American Airlines 191 and you are listening to Inside The Black Box. Soulful, heartfelt ballads and remedies of old school R&B sounds fashioned a unique style of music for upcoming singer and songwriter, Cedrina. Raised in the North Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, Cedrina began singing at the age of six, crediting powerhouse legends such as Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston and Toni Braxton as her earliest musical influences. She would go on to perform at various venues in surrounding cities and perform in various musical productions during her teen years. Cedrina attended the University of Wisconsin systems, where she became heavily involved in its theatre program. Also during her tenure there, she volunteered endlessly at local Boys & Girls Clubs, implementing music programs for teen youth. Upon graduation, she surfaced onto the Atlanta scene in 2014, where she began working with teen youth once again for one of the local Atlanta Boys & Girls Club centers. After implementing more music programs for all youth, Cedrina would go on to pursue other ventures and started working on background vocal work for other local artist before creating music of her own. It wasn’t until her first released single on Soundcloud, “Never Had” that Cedrina began to gain recognition for her powerful, sultry vocals. Her widened vocal range creates an amplified effect as Cedrina graces her latest released single, “Pieces” with her mezzo soprano twist and vibrato. Currently, working on her debut EP, “All For Nothing”, set to debut late Fall 2017, Cedrina is definitely an artist to be on the watch for!

The 2016 NRA Show in Chiacgo was attended by over 45,000 people. We spent 3 packed days looking for the best products, ideas and inspiration to help you grow your business. There was so much to see - but here are some of the edited highlights. We visit 2 great Chicago restaurants - Nick's Pizza and Pub and Au Cheval with Eric Cacciatore from Restaurant Unstoppable. We finally get to experience the amazing In n Out Burger - the iconic Burger business. What was the surprising thing about Bubba Gump? We discuss some of the reason YOU should go to the NRA show and how it will help you grow your business. There are a lot of suppliers who have a great story - that story can and should become part of your story. It helps create the experience and where there is experience there's margin! We discuss Kimbal Musk from The Kitchen and the way he creates a great story about his suppliers, Denny Post and the importance of a Signature meal- even if it isn't that popular, as well as a great discussion between Jon Taffer from Bar Rescue and Robert Irvine from Restaurant Impossible. Are you doing coffee in your Restaurant? Is it great coffee? What impact would making your restaurant someone's regular coffee spot make to revenue? We talked to the team from Vittoria coffee. (It was easily the best coffee at the show!) The Urban Cultivators look great and if you are creating a fresh and green brand, these are perfect for really highlighting what it is that you are doing for your customers (and how much of a difference would cheap, fresh herbs make?) Why was it we visited the Aussie Pie Kitchen in LA? We also look at Torta Bianca - a great ingredient for your cocktail list. We finish of with esoteric wine varietals and how they can help you with your wine list and profits and lastly a warning about spending the wrong way with your social media marketing. These are ujust some of the examples of what we picked up from the show. If you have an idea for a restaurant in mind, or already have a concept, there are hundreds of ideas and products there that you can find to help to tell a better story, find productivity gains or increase margin with better and more interesting menu items. I have focused too much on productivity, because I am not very good in the kitchen, but I think there was just as many interesting products for HOW you do in the kitchen as there was for WHAT you do in the kitchen. Hope to see you at #NRA 2017 and hope you have a busy night tonight!
Two Supporters's Shield in three years. Facing D.C. United again in the playoffs. Jessie Marsch has some interesting comments. It's a good time to be a fan of the New York Red Bulls. Oh, we also broke the curse in Chiacgo, so there's that as well! Wait, the New England Revolution are out of the playoffs?! Toronto FC got bounced in a blowout?! Well, things are just happening all over the place aren't they? Oh, we should probably talk about it, right?
