Episode 61: Dee AllumDee Allum brings her debut show ‘Deadname' to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, performing at 4:30pm at Pleasance Courtyard Below from 31st July to 25th Aug (excluding Tuesday 13th). Tickets here. https://www.instagram.com/dee_allum/BBC New Comedy Awards finalist Dee Allum (Comedy Central Live) is set to bring her highly-anticipated debut stand-up comedy hour ‘Deadname' to the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe, performing at Pleasance Courtyard at 4.30pm throughout the festival. She's here! She's queer! Her parents are sort of used to it! In her debut stand-up show, Dee Allum, the greatest (and only) transgender comedian her small village has ever produced, is determined to move on with her life. Questions will be asked and answered like: What is a woman? Shut up! But you've kept your Watford FC season ticket? It's allowed! And at what point is it morally acceptable to return a puppy if they misgender you? The jury is out!But most importantly, Dee is on a mission to fully embrace who she used to be. From being a little theatre kid who was too chubby to play Oliver Twist, to a love-sick teen who learnt a new language to impress his crush, to discovering that she was transgender whilst at an all boys school. All to have to go through two puberties (frankly, two too many). Will Dee come to terms with her past selves, and become the perfect, flawless, 34DD woman that she always imagined herself to be? After all, didn't every boy dream of this from time to time?Dee Allum is an award-winning stand-up comedian and writer. Dee started her comedy career performing sketches with the Cambridge Footlights and wrote the prestigious Footlights Pantomime in 2018. Dee was part of the Pleasance Comedy Reserve 2022 line-up, has written and performed a 45-minute solo stand-up show, and started to become a regular fixture on the UK comedy circuit, as well as performing at cultural events such as Latitude Festival. In the last two years Dee has been nominated for Best Newcomer at the Chortle Awards, placed as runner up in the Leicester Square Theatre New Comedian of the Year award 2021, won the 2Northdown New Act Competition 2021 and was a finalist in the 2022 BBC New Comedy Award competition. Dee has appeared on Comedy Central Live, as part of Comedy Central's digital series, and is also set to make her debut on The Stand Up Sketch Show on ITV this summer.#HYGYSTPOD #haveyougotyoursh*ttogether #HYGYST #caitlinoryan #deeallumHave You Got Your Sh*t Together? with Caitlin O'Ryan, is a podcast that celebrates not having your sh*t together! In each episode, Caitlin interviews guests who seemingly “have their sh*t together” - be that in life/love/work/hobbies. Throughout the conversation, the questions unveil whether they actually do, or whether the whole concept is a lie! With a mix of guests from various backgrounds, the podcast is sure to be relatable, honest, and an antidote to Instagram culture. Robin Ince is many things. A comedian, an author, a broadcaster and a populariser of scientific ideas. The Guardian once declared him a ‘becardiganed polymath’ which seems about right. He is probably best known as the co-host of the Sony Gold Award winning BBC Radio 4 series The Infinite Monkey Cage with Professor Brian Cox. He also co-hosts the podcast Robin and Josie’s Book Shambles, which gains over 100,000 listeners a month, which is part of The Cosmic Shambles Network, which he also co-created. His most recent book, I’m a Joke and So Are You, was described by Chortle as ‘one of the best books ever written about what it means to be a comedian’. He also wrote the book, The Bad Book Club, and has edited and written short stories for two volumes of Dead Funny: Horror Stories by Comedians, as well as writing and presenting documentaries about the history of self-help, comedians and melancholy, Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds, Richard Feynman, General Relativity and Dr Seuss. And interview the blind comedian David Eagle who has just been named best newcomer in the influential Chortle Awards.
On the show this week Helen and Rosie are joined by the wonderful Suzi Ruffell! Regarded as one of the best up-and-coming acts, Suzi won best club comic at the 2019 Chortle Awards. It has been a busy few years for Suzi, with three sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival resulting in her recording her show Keeping It Classy for Live from the BBC – released last summer – and a clip racking up over 16 million views on Facebook. Her shows receive critical acclaim, and have nabbed her the working-class comedy crown of her generation. It takes a certain type of person to work in showbiz, and often it was clear from the start that they were destined to end up on stage. Daddy Look At Me takes the time to explore these scenarios with a guest every week.Helen Bauer and Rosie Jones will probe the guest on the pivotal moments in their early life; from childhood, to romance, and everywhere in between, we want the highs and lows that make it so obvious that this craving for attention ensured our guest was a born entertainer. You can follow our Instagram and like us on Facebook! And you can follow Rosie and Helen on Twitter! This is a Studio71 production. We're BACK with another Trek TV Revisited episode. This time we endure our return to Star Trek: The Animated Series, with special guest, Eliot J Fallows, of Chortle Awards nominated Podcast, ‘Heal Your Wounds’ and the fantastic ‘Sean & Eliot Read the Bible’, joining us to dissect the episodes: 1.02 Yesteryear 1.04 The Lorelei Signal 1.12 The Time Trap Liam applauds the series (occasionally) using animation to it's advantage by adding more imaginative, gonzo characters, but blasts the emotionless line delivery of the majority of the main cast. Paul can't believe the audacity of including a 45 second sequence of Scotty singing, laughs at director Hal Sutherland's overly flashy signature credit and generally thinks the show has all the animated prowess of a pop-up book. Matt manages to appreciate some profound moments and wonders why this wasn't just a radio series thanks to the lack of actual 'animation' in this 'animated' show, while Eliot struggles to comprehend some (admittedly flawed) time travel logic, gets distracted by a jarringly overused piece of score and blames the character’s “shifty eyes” on why he thinks everyone is a secret villain. All this and even a strange tangent about Pinocchio of all things will materialise into your podcast feeds if you just download now! We're ready to rumble and we've prepared our loser speech for the 2018 Chortle Awards. This episode is all about the build-up and hype for the biggest award ceremony of the season. The glitz! The glamour! The garlic! Also Sean is going on an inexplicable holiday and Eliot has been to Toys R Us for the last time.
“Radio is the new Rock n’ Roll”. Ain’t that the truth, with Elis and his football friends in Dublin the night before, John captained the show for the first hour and awaited the arrival of his colleague who was feeling the full force of last night’s shunting. Normal service was quickly resumed though and attention was turned to the elephant in the room…. Just the small matter of a very shiny award and the title of “Best Radio” at the Chortle Awards!! No biggie. A huge serving of shame in the well, some horrendous humble brags and a Beta-Bet that nobody could have predicted…. Also, have you got a mate called Eggy? Are you pounding the P, or sitting on your B? Either way…. You’ll be unsurprised to learn that Elis & John spent valentine’s evening together eating too much cheese on toast. This week, Elis talks about the calories you can expect to incur whilst larging it and John offers sanctuary to those who have shamed and need a visit down the well. Can Elis start to make some ground on John’s 4-0 lead in Beta Bet? Will the show win at the Chortle Awards this time? What would you do with a dodeca-month subscription to Apple music? It’s frankly academic as long as you moisturise. Remember, you can get in touch on Saturday@radiox.co.uk (if you’re on e-mail. You’ve got to be on e-mail), and you can tune in across the UK every Saturday from 1pm til 4pm! Keep it session. Keep it Radio X.
http://thecomedycast.com Today you'll be hearing from Bilal Zafar. We started off the interview talking about Bilal already preparing new material for this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, we spoke as well a bit about Bilal family history, his mother and father moving from Pakistan to Britain. Bilal's family had just celebrated a wedding in the family so I was curious to ask him some questions about that as I know next to nothing about Muslim religious ceremonies. We spoke about how and why Bilal got into comedy and he got straight into his comedic influences growing up, Vic & Bob, Alan Partridge and in particular Chris Morris with Brass Eye, The Day Today and Blue Jam. Bilal also spoke about him going to university to study script writing and deciding that the best way to get noticed and get things done was to get a name for himself on the stand-up comedy scene so he took the plunge. We talked about his first gig, going blank and using it to his advantage and how he had to battle a bit with shyness before getting used to being on stage. Bilal won the 2016 NATYS (New Act of the Year Show) award so we had to speak about that and all the doors that it has helped open for him, we spoke about him getting signed by an agency thanks to it and how they came in handy during his Edinburgh Fringe Show. We had a chat then about Bilal getting into some acting roles and he revealed he'll be appearing on Rob Delaney & Sharon Horgan's show Catastrophe in the future, we spoke too about comedy panel shows, their popularity and a little about how people are auditioned for them. We spoke then about last year's show Cakes and how it was all kicked off by his brother joking around with some racism he'd seen on Twitter one day. That got us talking about social media and the power that it has and how people give it more weight that it probably deserves. Finally then we chat about how Bilal likes to work on his act and his writing process and how the writing is the real work compared to what we see on stage.
Well they came close, but the boys couldn’t quite win at the Chortle Awards. Actually, that’s not strictly true, as John will explain. Regardless, pints were drunk, rum was quaffed, and Elis was recorded inebriated in a taxi. Plus Elis and John have got a special Email of the Species for you, alongside more A Robins Amongst The Pigeons and of course Winner Plays On. Remember, tune in next Saturday to catch the boys from 10am tip 1pm, get in touch on Saturday@xfm.co.uk (if you’re on e-mail. You’ve got to be on e-mail), and keep it Xfm.
This week saw the start of John's diet, in order to rid himself of a "repulsive belly", so the boys wanted to hear about your odd body parts too. They also went all Tomorrow's World with a look at futuristic life-changer "e-mail" (it means Electronic Mail). All this plus an absolute belter of an A Robins Amongst The Pigeons, Winner Plays On and Textual Healing. Tune in next Saturday to catch the boys from 10am tip 1pm, get in touch on Saturday@xfm.co.uk and remember you can vote for Elis and John in the Chortle Awards through www.chortle.co.uk
