With Tony Gilroy's hit Star Wars series returning with a massive 3-episode premiere for its second season, Greg & John give their Andor Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review!! Covering Episode 1 "One Year Later," Episode 2 "Sagrona Teema," & Episode 3 "Harvest," Andor Season 2 picks up 1 Year after the events of the first season with Cassion now deep inside the heart of the rebellion; as he attempts to bring back a stolen TIE Fighter, Andor is stranded, setting off a chain reaction that leads to even greater tensions as Bix, Brasso, & the other allies are subject, first hand, to imperial tyranny.. Elsewhere in the galaxy, Mon Mothma struggles with her crumbling alliances & mental state as her daughter's wedding day (to the son of a powerful & dubious man) fast approaches... Season 2 assembles a powerhouse cast as Cassian Andor (Diego Luna, known for Rogue One and Narcos) deepens his role in the Rebel Alliance. Standing by his side is Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona, celebrated for Triple Frontier and Good Omens) and the ever‑determined Syril Karn (Kyle Soller, from Poldark and Doll & Em). Denise Gough returns as the uncompromising Dedra Meero (Seven Seconds, How to Get Away with Murder), while Genevieve O'Reilly reprises Mon Mothma (Rogue One, Obi‑Wan Kenobi) with her trademark resolve. Guiding the clandestine network is Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård, acclaimed for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Chernobyl), and the irrepressible droid K‑2SO is back under the voice of Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Rogue One). Ben Mendelsohn makes a dramatic return as Director Krennic (Rogue One, Bloodline), and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes) is also rumored to return as Kino Loy. Rounding out the ensemble are Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay, known for Game of Thrones and Black Mirror), Brasso (Joplin Sibtain, of Troy: Fall of the City and Spooks), and the quietly powerful Wilmon (Muhannad Bhaier, from Mariah: The Diva, the Demons, the Drama) as the rebellion's unsung heroes. General Witchfinders
55 - The Hands of the Ripper

General Witchfinders

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 22, 2025 101:34

Join us for Hammer's Hands of the Ripper, a 1971 British horror film released as the second half of a double feature with Twins of Evil. Directed by Peter Sasdy, produced by Aida Young, and written by L.W. Davidson from a story by Edward Spencer Shew. Making good use of the large Baker Street set at Pinewood Studios—left over from The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes—the production was denied permission to film its final scenes at St. Paul's Cathedral, so a replica was constructed instead. If the Pritchards' home and staircase look familiar, it's because Hammer's ever-resourceful set designers reused elements from The Curse of Frankenstein years earlier (see episode 2 of our podcast for more on that classic). Director Peter Sasdy, who cited Hands of the Ripper as his favourite film, also directed the original Adrian Mole TV series (both The Secret Diary and The Growing Pains), three episodes of Hammer House of Horror, and two other Hammer features: Countess Dracula and Taste the Blood of Dracula (the latter coming to the podcast later this year, hopefully). Most monumentally, he directed the legendary BBC sci-fi thriller The Stone Tape (definitely check General Witchfinders number 5—our third most popular episode to date!). Eric Porter stars as Doctor Pritchard. Renowned for his work in film, television, and theatre, he famously played Professor Moriarty opposite Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes and Soames Forsyte in The Forsyte Saga. Angharad Rees plays Anna, the daughter of the Ripper. She appeared in Boon (take a drink), starred as Demelza in 28 episodes of Poldark, and, the year after Hands of the Ripper, featured in Under Milk Wood alongside Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, and Elizabeth Taylor. She was made a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, had a pub named after her in Pontypridd (sadly now a card shop), and founded a Knightsbridge jewellery company, Angharad. Pieces she designed were featured in Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Wikipedia also notes she was once in a relationship with Alan Bates, which we mention only to plug episode 35, where we talked about The Shout.Lynda "Nurse Gladys Emmanuel" Baron appears as Long Liz—a curious name choice considering Long Liz was an actual canonical Ripper victim. Here, she's depicted alive and well (at least initially), years after Saucy Jack's supposed demise. Baron appeared as a recurring character in both Coronation Street and EastEnders, and played three different characters in Doctor Who across three Doctors.Dora Bryan turns up as Mrs Golding, one of two clairvoyants in the film. You may know her from 50 episodes of Last of the Summer Wine, Boon (drink), or as Helen in A Taste of Honey (written by Jon's mum's mate Shelagh Delaney). She (Dora, not Shelagh) also appeared in both a Carry On and a St Trinian's.Lastly, Norman Bird pops up as the Police Inspector. If he looks familiar, it's because he had over 200 TV and 60 film roles. He was in Spywatch (as Mr Jenkins), Boon (drink), Woof!, Whack-O!, and Help! (with Stephen Mangan). He also did a stint in Jim Davidson's Up the Elephant and Round the Castle—only mentioned because Ross was convinced it was alongside Marina Sirtis, but IMDb says she was in just one episode?Anyway, back to Norman Bird. He appeared in The Adventure Game, Whistle Down the Wind, Steptoe and Son, Fawlty Towers, Please Sir!, and The Medusa Touch (on our long list since day one). He was Mr Braithwaite, the farmer, in Worzel Gummidge and voiced Bilbo in the 1978 Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings. Blair Jollands: Kiwi musician on his career, recent album 'Little Comet'

Kiwi musician Blair Jollands has made a name for himself overseas. He works as a sound designer and composer in the film industry, as well as creating and releasing his own music. Jollands has a wide range of film credits, but some of the most popular he left his mark on are Poldark, Shackleton, Midas Man, and Alien vs Predator. He's worked with a wide range of stars, including Madonna and Rhianna, and won praise from the late David Bowie and Boy George. ‘Little Comet' is his fourth album, which he recently released under his own name after performing under the pseudonym ‘El Hula'. Jollands left New Zealand in 1995, spending awhile in the United States before winding up in the UK, where he's remained since. He told Mike Hosking that getting a job in sound design at the time was very much a right time, right place situation. “I was a coffee barista, and I thought y'know, I really need to get something that pays a little bit more to help my music along.” “So I actually walked in and gave them my CV, and a week later they said ‘will you come in because we had three people just, they've been headhunted and they've gone to another studio.'” Although sound design and music production may seem like different areas, Jolland says these days the line between them is really fine. “For example, the late Jóhann Jóhannsson, for say, his movie ‘Sicario', it's, I find it very hard to establish what is music and what is sound design – it's very tonal, it's not as harmonic, less melodic.” “But generally speaking, sound design is more organic, and we capture sounds and manipulate them.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Challenged by Babs to find a single person he's never wronged, Brighty's search leads them to Cornwall and to best friend Russ Blackshark. Whilst Brighty and Babs re-run Russ's stag do, Churlington gets into a spot of bother auditing the family tin mine.Lord Christian Brighty is the talk of the Regency 'Ton' - a celebrated libertine, a heartthrob and a hero to many. But close-up, he is a spoilt, impetuous, life-ruining bastard… Or at least he was. Because his carefree life of infinite privilege has been upended by an encounter with his new chambermaid - the uneducated but forthright Babigail - who became the first person to tell him the unvarnished truth about his selfish behaviour. Overnight, his lifelong trust that everyone loved him had been replaced with a gnawing fear that Babs was right. So now, with his narcissism collapsing and a need to prove to Babs he is actually a good person, Lord Brighty is determined to fix all his past wrongs. And by extension all the ills of Regency society. Accompanying him in his quest are Babs (elevated beyond her station to a chambermaid-cum-adviser role), and his butler, Mr Churlington. Although Churley would prefer everything to stay exactly as it used to be (as would all Brighty's friends, family and the entirety of high society).Written by Christian Brighty & Amy GreavesCast: Lord Christian Brighty ….. Creativity is the ability to create, produce, or develop original work theories, techniques, thoughts and ways of seeing. You are creative, whether you tap into it or not, and you take your creativity wherever you go, and I think it's often overlooked how valuable creativity is as a transferable skill: the abilities you take from job to job. Here to discuss is BAFTA-nominated television director, Ed Bazalgette, who exemplifies creativity as a transferable skill, having first found success as a musician, then editor, and now director and producer. I first met Ed when he was the lead guitarist for The Vapors, supporting their global hit, Turning Japanese, and I've been a super fan ever since. Please do yourself a favor and check out the power-pop majesty of their full albums, New Clear Days and Magnets. Ed's directing credits include Dr. Who, Poldark, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, and The Witcher.  Ed opened my eyes in so many ways: stay humble there's room for more than one person's creativity on a project creating an environment that fosters sharing creative ideas serves the project leadership, communications and soft skills are essential never stop learning and questioning what's in service of the story combine a let's try it! mentality with discipline the ripple effect of creativity as a transferable skill because the more you put out there, the more everybody working with you takes with them to the next thing they do Ed's currently in post-production on Marie Antoinette for PBS. For this episode, we had the pleasure of speaking to Alexander Jeremy. AJ is a filmmaker, actor and member of the comedy improv group, "Shoot from the Hip."He's recently wrapped post production on a film called The Spaceman, starring none other than Woody Norman (C'mon C'mon, Poldark), Colin Farrell (Banshees of Inesherrin, The Lobster), and Amanda Abbington (Sherlock, Mr Selfridge). Our conversation has two main themes to it: first, how he made The Spaceman and specifically, how he amassed such a star studded cast for the project. Secondly, his comedy improv group, Shoot from the Hip, and how they've built an audience for themselves. As of writing this, they have 186,000 followers on instagram and 1.2 million followers on TikTok. We have a great conversation about how we, as filmmakers, can apply the lessons AJ's learnt, and as a consequence, gain more power as creatives. AJ is incredibly candid about the life of a filmmaker- we massively appreciated this and feel like there's so much to learn from what he has to say.You can find out more about him via the links below:YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@atjeremyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/atjeremy/?hl=enShoot from the Hip's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shootimpro/?hl=enAJ's favourite short films: https://www.nowness.asia/picks/red-feng-yu-chaohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs1xPBIfOS4

Kirsty and Roy are invited round for dinner at Willow Cottage, cooked by Brian and overseen by Alice. Brian apologises for falling asleep at Roy and Kirsty's and explains the meal is his way of saying thank you. When Brian's out of earshot, Kirsty admits to Roy how bad she feels about having found Brian an imposition. Particularly since Roy had told her about his conversation with Adil who'd revealed he'd lost someone close. Roy asks Kirsty to keep his conversation with Adil to herself. They agree that Brian will be welcome at theirs any time. They chat about Grey Gables and how well it's coming along, with designs for the new part of the building really complimenting the old part. Kirsty's really supportive when, after a few minor cooking errors, Brian says that Jennifer would be mortified if she could see him. Brian tells Kirsty that it's been really lovely having them over and emotionally admits to missing Jennifer terribly.
